"Out there on black asphalt ribbons, deep in the heart of nowhere, I watch the images of towns and people grow smaller in my rearview mirror and finally fade to nothing. I feel at one with the speeding tires and the motion of the Jeep.... The movement seems strange yet vaguely familiar, as though it possesses a soul I once met but can't quite remember.... Those slowly disappearing images...and the blurry objects on the side of the highway were not solely optical events. They were fragments of time rushing past me, quickly and almost imperceptibly. I do not know where they went."

What a great read!

You can't buy a more entertaining history book. There are stories of lost towns, forgotten people and real events that simply bring Ohio to life. If you like Ohio, if you consider yourself a true blue Buckeye or knows somebody who fancies themselves an Ohian through and through, you will not be disappointed with this wonderful collection of stories.

Roaming Through Ohio History

I love this type of history. It details some the quirky sites found across the state. As an untrained historian, I have often asked myself what happened here or who began this community. This book and its earlier cousin answer those questions and many more about Ohio locales. Randy McNutt always peaks my desire to visit where he has already been and to seek out similar sites on my own. That is why my cameras and I roam Ohio preserving history one photo at a time.

About the Author
John A. Rapp is Professor of Political Science at Beloit College, USA where he founded the Asian Studies program and served as chair of the Political Science department. His teaching interests include Chinese politics, Communist and post-Communist systems, comparative democracies, and Chinese and comparative political thought. He coauthored Autocracy and China's Rebel Founding Emperors (with Anita Andrew) and has published in many journals, including Anarchist Studies and the Journal of Comparative Asian Development.

Her plays, which also include Ida's Havin' a Yard Sale and A Very Ida Christmas, have won numerous awards and have delighted audiences for decades. Selected by Portland Magazine as one of the Ten Most Intriguing People in Maine, she has been creating and touring her original theatrical productions since 1992. She has been a featured performer in The Mirth of Venus and The Mirth Canal at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston; The Maine Festival; the Minneapolis Fringe Theater Festival; and Portland, Maine's Cassandra Project. Her work has been supported by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, the Maine Arts Commission, and the Maine Humanities Council. She is a popular keynote speaker. She lives in Eliot, Maine, with her husband, Gordon Carlisle and they both run Poolyle Productions, a theatrical performance company.

A treasure-- funny and insightful

I loved this book. It's an advice book written in the voice of Ida LeClair, a Maine-iac extraordinaire. Ida is a Certified Maine Life Guide, offering her thoughts on attitude, dieting, being kind to your spouse, "molded cuisine," and napping. In Chapter Two she says, "The most important thing in life is: Have a positive attitude." And she tells readers specifically how to do that, all while chatting about her husband Charlie, her Grampy Gilbert, and her friends, the "Women Who Run With the Moose."

Many parts are hilarious, like the chapter called "How Many Points in Cabbage Soup?" Ida describes the fragrant after-effects of this dieting concoction: "So I'm laying there, listening to Charlie's emissions, and I start wondering if it is possible to get asphyxiated in that bedroom. I could just picture the headlines: CABBAGE SOUP DIET CLAIMS LIFE OF MAINE COUPLE IN TRAGIC BEDROOM FINALE."

In "Feng Shui-ing the Double-Wide," Ida describes a consultation with her new-agey, "woo woo" niece: "Next Caitlin got out this energy map. It was fascinating. Apparently, different sections of the house represent different areas of your life: relationships, health, family, travel. We were doing pretty good, too, until we go to the wealth area, which, in my house, is located in the bathroom. Swear to God, our wealth is in the toilet."

The advice sections are entertaining, too. Charlie gives his view from the barcalounger. Caitlin leads exercises on breathing right and connecting with your inner moose, and Ida tweaks them to fit her own time frame. If all you do is read the tips, they're interesting--but if you do them, they work! They will help you get a positive attitude. I laughed at the idea of washing your cares away in the car wash, but I felt lighter when I tried it. Finding Your Inner Moose is a self-help book that actually works, led by a charming character who immediately feels like a friend.

Ida is wicked funny, but there's a serious undertone, too, like here: "If world leaders did their own housecleaning, this would be a more peaceful planet. It's hard to wage war while you're cleaning the toilet."

I think this would be a terrific book for book clubs or self-help groups (12 chapters, doing one a month). It would make a good present for a woman or man who's sliding into middle age, or someone of any age with a working funny bone. Treat yourself to a copy and be prepared to guffaw your way through it.

The only drawback to the print version of this book is that you can't hear Ida's voice. I recommend listening to a podcast of Ida before reading, so you can hear her unique voice when you read the book.

If you're a Maine woman, you'll like this book

My parents gave me this book recently and as a transplant from Maine in the Rocky Mountains, it reminded me of home. You can hear Ida's good ol' fashioned New England common sense coming through a Maine accent. This book is hilarious and insightful, and it called to mind all the wonderful women back home I know that truly "run with the moose"! The book is geared to women in middle age, but as a younger woman, I still got a lot out of it and a lot of laughs. It would make a great gift for Mainers away from home. Thank you Ida LeClair!

This was the world inhabited by Richard Latham during his service with the Royal Ulster Constabulary – a force that remains an institution of contradictions and intrigue to many outside observers. Considered by some to be one of the finest police forces in the world, its officers are looked upon by others as the evil storm-troopers of Unionism and the British Goverment. The RUC is now a force undergoing sweeping change in response to Republican demands, yet for 30 years it stood alongside the British Army in a war with Republicans that killed over 300 policemen and injured thousands more.

For 14 years Latham, an Englishman, served as a police officer, both in England and in Ulster, transferring from the English Special Branch to the RUC in 1991. Deadly Beat is his raw and hard-hitting story, giving a unique insight into the grim reality of policing Ulster.

Latham charts the dedication and restraint of officers who witnessed their colleagues die, yet were obliged to play within the rules of the law - rules so loaded in favour of the killers that comparatively few were brought to justice.

This book exposes incidents of racism and religious bias experienced by the author himself. It looks behind the scenes to reveal the extremes of behaviour, alcohol abuse, womanising and petty corruption that the heady cocktail of stress, big pay packets and a sense of 'living for the day' bring to many of the men who don the RUC uniform. Deadly Beat is an open, warts-and-all view of the RUC by a man who makes intuitive comparisons between policing on the mainland and serving in Ulster.

Richard Latham spent over 25 years as a police officer and detective, including five years with the now disbanded Royal Ulster Constabulary. He is the author of Deadly Beat: Inside the Royal Ulster Constabulary, his memoir. He now teaches within the adult education sector.

An Interesting Perspective

Richard Latham's story about his time as a member inside the Royal Ulster Constabulary is a balanced narrative about the much maligned force, some of its characters (Latham's fellow policemen) both good and not so. Often considered an extension of militant Loyalism, this book makes it clear that the majority of RUC men, were just average Joe policeman from both the Catholic and Protestant communities who were doing their best to service their communities amidst squalid sectarianism and the long dirty war between the IRA, Loyalists and the Security Forces. Certainly there were bad apples in the RUC (as there no doubt are in any police force) who colluded with Loyalist Paramilitaries and Crown Forces, but I imagine the real RUC of that time to be just as Richard Latham describes it. I suppose only those who were members of the RUC know whether that is the truth or not.

best book this decade

This book.
THIS. BOOK.

I don't really even know what to say.
I don't know where to begin, or how to begin.
Or anything really. Not anymore.

This book challenges. It changes. It makes you look.
No, more than look. It makes you hear, think, learn.

So I'm a fan. Officially.

Wilson has a way with words. He's a poet, a storyteller, a spinner of wild tales and far-flung dreams.
He's got a fresh voice. I haven't enjoyed a Christian book so much since I last read C.S. Lewis.

This book took me a long time to read.
Not because I didn't like it, but because every other paragraph I was putting the book down and thinking through what I had just read. Then I was re-reading it and thinking some more. No matter how much I tried, I couldn't just READ. I was forced to think and learn and question and change and grow. Most importantly grow.

Things you will learn:

1. We are all stories.
2. We are not the Author.
3. We are just characters.
4. Not even the main character, just supporting roles.
5. We were chosen, shaped, crafted into exactly who we are supposed to be and who we are supposed to become.
6. We are breathed.
7. We are created.
8. Life is a story.
9. Listen to the stories.
10. We are welcome and wanted in this story.

The story of life.You can almost feel the strain in his fingers as he tries hard to impress upon you how fully your life was meant to be lived.

This book covers so many things. But mostly it's about us not being about us.
We are meant to live our lives for others.
This book is an incredible glimpse into what life is and what it's meant to be.
As Wilson says, "Life isn't complicated, (just hard)."

So "run faithfully to the end, and like all good men, you will die of having lived."

"This is my body. May it be broken for you"

Only "The Lord of the Rings" has made me laugh and cry at the same time, but "Death by Living" came close. It certainly made me do both, even if at separate moments. By the time I finished, I was so full of sehnsucht (that "overwhelming bittersweet yearning that bleeds into joy"), I felt ready to detonate--like Agent Smith in "The Matrix," split by the light-spear, but in a good way. I wanted to live. I wanted to die.

I was glad that I could do both, right now.

You've heard it said that from the minute you're born, you're dying--as if that's a bad thing. N. D. Wilson shows that death is not just the last enemy, it is the calling to which we are called, a calling which we can fear and lament and ignore and refuse (for a while), but only to our harm. You are a pitcher, and you will be poured out. You can be vinegar or you can be wine, but you will poured regardless. You can be dumped out and wasted in the cracks on the sidewalk, or you can be poured into goblets and drunk by others, for others. The choice is yours. Age well. Mellow. Do not despise the Hand that tips you. Do not begrudge the mouths that drink you dry. You follow the Man who shed His blood like wine for you.

"A grim morn, and a glad day, and a golden sunset," wrote Tolkien as Theoden lay dying. "Death by Living" is Wilson's sketch of man's golden sunset as intended by God, captured by words to make your blood pound, ready to be shed. It made me want to grab life around the middle and squeeze, but not forever. I will let go. My life for yours, every day, until I have nothing left, and then I will let go one last time.

"This is my body," Nate says to his children. "May it be broken for you."

The morning is only grim for those who do not know the story.

Life is too short to waste on rambling

N. D. Wilson wrote Death by Living to remind each of us that to truly live we must recognize that we are dying. The subtitle is “Life is meant to be spent,” and the tagline describes this as a “poetic portrait of faith, futility, and the joy of this mortal life.” (Poetic indeed.)

The crux of his message comes buried in Chapter 2: “If you think it, live it. If you don’t live it, you don’t really think it. You are not what you think (or what you think you think). You are not what you say you are. You are what you do.” Talk is cheap, and actions speak louder than words.

I struggled to get through this book: I prefer books to be linear and organized, and Mr. Wilson seems to prefer the exact opposite. I enjoyed some of his phrasing as he recalled the tales of his grandparents, and for me his choice of stories seemed to match his intended goal. (He wrote in Chapter 2 that “stories are soul food” and nourish us as much as the physical food we eat.) But in the end I was left confused and had to struggle to make sense of the work as a whole. Were I to edit a digest of this I could easily reduce the book to a fraction of its size and still communicate his message.

If you’re interested in spending time indulging in a poetic, very non-linear book encouraging you to make the most of your life, this is the book for you. Otherwise, skip this book for something better. After all life is too short to waste on rambling, incoherent treatises.

Fast, fun, delicious recipes give me a new appreciation for TJ's

I have always been a fan of Trader Joe's. So many fun, interesting things to try, and such a friendly staff. However, I started getting into a cycle and buying the same things. After looking through The I Love Trader Joe's Cookbook, I was excited to make my next trip to Trader Joe's. Recipes such as: Quick Kheer using frozen basmati rice, Thai Lentil Simmer using TJ's Thai Green Curry Simmer Sauce, and the delicious No-nonsense gnocchi introduced me to new items at Trader Joe's that I buy regularly and love. There are also some amazing sandwich recipes that are creative, delicious, and so fast to make. The Figgy Bleu is a personal favorite. There are entire sections on salads and casseroles. Anyone who has books by Kris Holechek also knows that there will be a dessert section that is no less amazing than the rest of the book. Cookies loaded with everything, chocolate cherry ice cream cake, and cheesecake to name a few. Every recipe can be made vegan and has very simple directions to convert the recipe. The photos are beautifully done and the directions are clear and concise. This book is a bargain and I am happy to add these great recipes to my cooking repertoire.

caution on ingredient availability

I took this book out of the library and was so happy with the promise it held that I immediately ordered one for my own from amazon.. The caution is that when I went to trader joes for the 17 bean barley mix and the cream of wheat I was told both items had been discontinued. Not just at the store but in the entire area I'm in. I guess I can be creative by using bobs red mill for the bean barley and again for the cream of wheat..but it is disappointing .this book just came out in ll/12

Delicious, easy recipes for everyone!

As a fellow avowed TJ's-lover, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this cookbook. I have Kris' book The 100 Best Vegan Baking Recipes: Amazing Cookies, Cakes, Muffins, Pies, Brownies and Breads, and it has become my go-to book for all things yummy and sweet. So I knew that Kris' take on TJ's would be delicious.

Even knowing that I was in for a treat, I was still pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of these recipes. I've already made three--the hearty Wild Rice Porridge, the tangy Orange Creamsicle Cake, and the perfect Quick Calzones. Each one was spot-on.

I'm a vegan who sometimes cheats and eats vegetarian stuff, and my fiancé is a chicken-a-tarian, and both of us are really excited about these recipes. They're clearly spelled out, and many have beautiful full-color photos accompanying them.

I've recommended this book to several sometimes-veg friends, and I think it would be great for folks who are just going vegetarian (or vegan), or who want to introduce a few more veg meals a week into their diets. Kris' recipes are no-fuss, hearty, tasty, and will make you popular with anyone who tries them. Do yourself a favor, and buy a copy now.

Andrew Sluyter is an associate professor in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Louisiana State University and a fellow at the American Council of Learned Societies (2012–2013). He is the author of Colonialism and Landscape: Postcolonial Theory and Applications, which won the James M. Blaut Award in Recognition of Innovative Scholarship in 2004.

Chicano novelist Anaya pens an impassioned poem about the legendary labor leader (1927-1993) that gets bogged down in flowery metaphors. Anaya depicts Ch vez as "a wind of change" whose name is "a soft breeze to cool the campesino's sweat," and describes Ch vez's opponents as "arrogant hounds of hate" living in "a land grown fat with greed." The verses move from grief to hope to a rousing call to action, honoring Ch vez's words in a refrain ("Rise, mi gente, rise!"), and are most effective when rooted in the specific (references to the San Joaqu!n Valley and Sacramento where he organized members of the National Farm Workers Assoc., etc.). The abstract imagery unfortunately detracts from the poem's main thrust ("The future opens itself like the blossom/ That is his soul, the fruit of his labor./ He calls for us to share in the fruit"), and most of the facts are relegated to a note from the author and a chronology at the end. Threaded through with Christ imagery and references to Shakespeare and Shelley, this challenging workAdespite its picture-book formatAmay be best suited for middle and high school-age students. Enriquez's surreal collage illustrations, presented as a series of old snapshots, convey interesting details but lack subtlety: Ch vez marches through oversize heads of lettuce, followed by a crowd of boycotters; the tendrils from a cluster of grapes twine around a policeman's gun as well as his handcuffed captive's wrists. Gr 4-7-This poetic expression of mourning and hope is a heartfelt commentary on history and greatness. Anaya tells about the life of this crusader for justice and how his ideals shaped his life's work. Ch vez's impact on both the Hispanic community and American society is made manifest by repeated expressions of grief and loss, and by the final conclusion that, despite his death, his work goes on. Skillful use of meter and repetition give the text a mesmerizing formality that imparts the gravity of Ch vez's labor and magnitude of his loss. It is perfectly matched by Enriquez's accomplished mixed-media collages. Photographs and watercolor paintings are skillfully combined with handmade-paper backgrounds to produce arresting images. A page of text faces each illustration; each of these pages is ornamented with a small insert from the facing collage along with one line of the text in enlarged typeface, creating a poem within a poem. Comparable to Alma Flor Ada's Gathering the Sun (Lothrop, 1997) in poetic and artistic power, this fine example of elegiac verse serves both poetry and biography well, while elucidating the struggles of migrant workers in this country.-Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA

Gaspar Enriquez's murallike collages juxtapose significant images, including portraits of adults and children, banners, guns, and grapes, for a running nonverbal commentary on the symbols and events that marked Chavez's struggle for justice. Using Chavez's words, "Rise, mi gente, rise!" Anaya exhorts readers to carry on that struggle, then closes with an uplifting biographical afterword and a detailed chronology. Many books chronicle Chavez's achievements, but this vividly evokes the powerful feelings of love and outrage that he was able to raise in his admirers. John Peters

The spirit of Cesar Chavez

Cesar Chavez was a champion of the people and Rodolfo Anaya tries to convey that with his use of language. Publishers Weekly claims Anaya is "bogged down in flowery metaphors." I would disagree. Rather I see this tribute and the choice of words to describe Chavez and his times as an eloquent use of language. The target audience is young children who have no concept of Chavez and his struggles; if anything the pictures painted with words or concepts might be too difficult to grasp for a young mind. Enter the teacher or parent to supplement the information and simplify. Each page has a theme with Anaya's poetry capturing and puntuating the point. Of particualr interest are the illustrations which are excellent and quite powerful. Each illustration corresponds with the poetry and theme of the page. The book is one that calls for young people to remember the struggles of the civil rights era for Chicanos and to continue the fight for equality and justice. The lessons of Chavez's life are given and a plea for people not to fight each other but rather for each other. At the end of the book there is chronolgy of the life of Cesar Chavez that can be useful for the teacher. Ths book would be a nice addition to the classroom or school library for children of the middle school ages. Recommended for children who are learning English in the primary grades.

Wonderful elegy

I ordered two of these by mistake, but was glad I did, as I gave one as a Christmas gift. A moving
elegy for a great American leader who should be remembered for generations to come.

Claws Bared by Sheryl Nantus

Claws Bared was a really good read, that kept me guessing till the end. I loved the romance between Rebecca and Brandon, especially after he meets up with her to lend a hand in her investigation. The pacing was good and I really enjoyed the ending.

My only real problem with the book is mostly my fault, since I haven't read the first book. With Rebecca going on the case at the very beginning I didn't feel very attached to Brandon throughout the first part of the book, and if I'd read the first book I think I would have felt differently about him. By the end it didn't matter too much because I grew to love him. I'd recommend reading the first book, Blood of the Pride, first, to get the full effect.

Overall really good read. Loved the mystery and figuring out who the murderer was, the author did an excellent job of keeping me wondering. I'd love to go back and read the first book because I feel like I've missed out on another good story! I'd recommend it, especially if you like a good mystery and enjoy a good shifter PNR.

Rebecca Desjardin has a problem. She's a Canadian private eye, she's a Felis, an ex-member of the local (Montreal?) cat shape-shifting Pride who still can't make the complete change to her inner Cat, and she's in love with Brandon Hanover, a human, and an investigative reporter.

Rebecca is an ex-member of the local Pride, because, not being able to totally change, she was brutally expelled, and now twenty years later Rebecca has been dragged back into the Pride's politics, first with a murder of a local Felis member in "Blood Of The Pride", and now with "Claws Bared", a human who may have been killed by a Feris member.

Jess, the tough leader of the local Pride, is now contacting Rebecca for another job. It seems that a male stripper for the Penscatta, near Pittsburgh, PA, exotic bar "Cat's Meow" (!) has been murdered. And it was a pretty nasty death, he was mauled and torn. It's obvious that a Felis, not a human, has done the deed, and an outsider, with insider skills, is needed to investigate.

And how can Rebecca to say no to Jess when she asked Jess asks politely for a favor? Not Rebecca, and besides, Jess never asks politely, and arm twisting can only be by the most liberal measures be considered asking for a favor, and so, reluctantly, Rebecca is off to Penscotta to investigate another murder, and to get involved, in a foreign Pride's sticky politics.

The murdered man is Michael Hansa, and he was a favorite of both human and Felis females alike, although oddly enough, he didn't seem to be seeing anybody, either in the biblical or social, manner.

Again, Nantus doesn't skip on the mandatory urban fantasy examination of the local Felis society, unfortunately, Rebecca's still an outsider, and has to prove herself all over again. Oh yes, and she's single. So, young Felis stud and widower Trace Carson is appointed her shadow, to see that she tows the line, and eventually, and he has ideas about where he, and what he considers an available female Feris, should go in their relationship, even if the relationship is more in his mind than Rebecca's. Eventually, loneliness gets the better of Rebecca, and the situation between Trace and Rebecca will get a bit sticky, as with this second novel in the Rebecca Desjardin series, Rebecca is forced to make the decision, her life on the outside, or a life with a Pride. This decision is the one decision that will change Rebecca's life, and which will also be the fulcrum to an eventual clash between Trace, Brandon, and the local Pride, as Brandon makes the decision to fly down to Penscotta to help Rebecca. Making a sticky situation that much more sticky, as it is Felis custom to eliminate any, and all, of those who suspect who they are.

And once again, Sheryl Nantus takes a different tactic than most writers of urban fantasy, and, besides doing shape-shifting felines and their Pride politics proper; she also doesn't skip on the mystery and suspense elements of her novels. And while, we all tune in for the urban fantasy angle, and, let's be honest, for the strong female lead character, what keeps readers like me coming back for seconds and thirds is what is the backbone of this story. That is, the murder investigation, and the socio-political elements of what powers the plot; which involves one serious culture clash, as the murder brings to a head the clash that will occur when an outside situation comes into contact with an intentionally secretive society, or group, that runs itself by its own rules and laws, and how such a society would go to any length keep its own identity and secrets.

Thankfully, Nantus doesn't rush things, she takes her time to develop her story and she paces it well, but she doesn't overstay here welcome either with a four hundred, or more, page tome, she tells her story, develops her characters, ties up all the loose ends, and then she goes home to plan the next adventure of Rebecca. And the print is also nice sized, making Nantus' book easy to read.

On the positive side, I liked Nantus' examination of these micro-societies, and her look at this local Pride, and how different it was than Rebecca's, and how it tries to continue its seclusionary habits, while still continuing to be active in local government and politics.

Rebecca Desjardin is a hell of a strong character, although she comes across as a bit confused here, even though that doesn't stop her from letting loose with her inner snark. Not surprising, as for twenty years she's been ignored and ostracized by others like her, and now suddenly she is getting some grudging respect and attention; but will this go away if she decides to do what she considers what is right, instead of what would be considered politically expedite?

And this is what I liked about Rebecca, she's bullheaded enough to do what she considers right, even to her own detriment. With this, she's definitely in the classic pulp gumshoe mold. She's the symbolic hero fighting the establishment for justice for the underdog or the would-be-forgotten victim. I haven't read them, but based on what I've seen on the telly, Nantus' novels seem to be influenced by Kelly Armstrong's novels, and the television show "Grimm", and none of this is a bad thing.

On the negative side, I can believe in shape-shifters, and all that goes with this, for the sake of the novel's story, but that these hard-bodies can eat a steady stream of carbs and fat and never gain a pound? Yeah, I just don't believe it.

Also, just what cartoons have Nantus been watching? After about the three-quarter mark this novel starts developing some serious testosterone poisoning. After a while it seems that the primary men of this novel all seem to be acting like out-of-control horny bunnies while channeling rabid wolves. And while it may seem romantic for women to have men fight over them, wouldn't they be rolling their eyes if men constantly wanted women to have catfights over them? On the other hand, those of us that were disappointed by the failed soufflé that was the action of the last novel will get certainly get some more robust fare this time.

Oh, and if this were a male stripper bar, instead of being called the "Cat's Meow", shouldn't it have been called "The Barking Dog"?

These books, if you are interested, are now being reprinted in inexpensive paperback by Harlequin through their Carina Press imprint, and while it certainly helps, you don't necessarily have to read the first book in this series to enjoy this one.

Urban fantasy + mystery

Book two, urban fantasy. Rebecca is an outcast Felis who can't shift. When she's called out of town to solve a murder, she quickly finds herself in murky water with a large Felis clan that has permeated both the police and town council. A good mystery, but it was the developments in Rebecca and Bran's relationship that I really enjoyed.
