Eskrima: Filipino Martial Art, by Krishna Godhania

Eskrima, which is also known as Arnis (De Mano) or Kali, is the indigenous martial art of the Philippine Islands. Dynamic and flexible, with a wide range of training methods it can be practised by students of all ages and levels of fitness. Well known and respected as a highly practical weapons-based system, Eskrima is practised worldwide by civilians, law enforcement personnel and special units within the military. Eskrima uses training weapons (rattan sticks and daggers) from the earliest stages, alongside purely unarmed techniques. These training methods have been found particularly effective at increasing co-ordination and reflexes, providing a fast track to developing the qualities needed for practical self-defence. This fascinating book traces the history and evolution of this art form. It highlights Eskrima's essential principles and concepts. The instructional section illustrates how the Eskrimador is able to succeed in a wide range of combat situations involving fighting with both weapons and open-hands. Techniques, two-person flow drills, self-defence applications, training with specialized equipment, the philosophy of the art and 'self-defence and the law' are all covered in depth.

Excellent book by an Excellent Guro!
By Phillytown
Guro Godhania has outdone himself in writing this book. It covers everything you'd learn in an actual Eskrima class or at least the one that I took before redeploying from Iraq. Still, reading a book will not help with becoming an Expert or will it provide a sparring partner. It will cover what you need to know, ie, stances, stick, knife and empty hand positions. It mentions how you can attack, defend, and counter-attack with a variety of different weapons or items that can be used as weapons. It covers a little about simply dodging projectiles by getting out of the way (thats common sense) and also using your stick. It covers solo training and training equipment you can build yourself. It even has a description on where to strike the human body to inflict max pain. It covers areas where to strike with single stick, staff, knife or empty hands. It also covers some throws and locks but the book mainly covers weapons. This book also has a section on double sticking fighting and defense. In my opinion this is the best of the best out of all other fighting systems books out there. Still, dont think you will be an armchair expert only by reading the material. You need to get up off your couch and find a school and use this as a tool for practice with a partner or with solo sparring equipment.

OK for UK, Odd if you're in the US
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
First, for $15 US, this is an excellent value, given that the photos are crisp and clear, in color, and much more understandable than most of the other books in this genre.

In 168 pages, Godhania does a good job of covering each aspect briefly, from hand to hand to stick, knife, double stick, long stick, knife and sword, etc.

The problem is in the knife section. The author bends over backwards to justify the idiotic UK laws against carrying even a small knife for self defense, using the logic: "of course if you did carry one, you might be tempted to use it in self defense..." this, after reverently extolling the "masters" who historically hacked folks to pieces! The history is fine if you have some cultural attachment to the Phillipines, but a lot of time and space is wasted on history that has little relevance to technique.

The author goes on to describe why, due to the UK laws and the fear that someone might misuse a knife with "offensive" technique, he won't show anything but DEFENSIVE moves against another knife attacker. To show how nutty this gets, he then gives a few knife to knife techniques with the logic (I'm not joking here): "If you manage, after being attacked by multiple attackers with knives, to disarm one, and then use his knife against the others, you may want to... (few offensive techniques are given). Then (again not kidding) he says the UK jury MIGHT let you off since you didn't have your own knife, and there WERE multiple knife attackers. This from the culture that spawned Fairbairn-- probably the best combat knife fighting instructor in history!

But wait... it gets better. After all those disclaimers and warnings, Godhania goes on to give detailed anatomy and pictures of knives vs. the brachial, carotid, femoral, subclavain and other major arterial targets, with beautifully illustrated anatomy drawings! I'd give this 5 stars if not for the bend over backwards hypocrisy dancing around a proud old culture (UK, not Phillipines) that's now gone so stagnant that they not only have forgotten Fairbairn, but don't even let their citizens defend themselves with a "small knife" against multiple attackers with machetes according to this author's logic! For a "brave" fighter, he seems awfully scared of the British authorities if he can't even be straight in a book. If double speak doesn't bother you, definitely get this for the price/illustration ratio, it's a good buy. If you're into honesty, pass.

A great book as an overview on the art
By J. O'Hara
A great book as an overview on the art. There is a lack details when it comes to the 'How to' of eskrima. Often the author would state "due to lack of space I will not be covering _______ here. If you want to know more contact a certified teacher" (I am paraphrasing) and then go ahead and fill half a chapter with history and personal stories, that are great, but that was not how the book was described to be. I will say that I enjoyed the history and the photo in the 'how to' sections were clear and easy to understand and that is why I am giving it 3 stars.
