I would have given it just one star, however the stack of mini-books was at least (and at most) useful as a paper weight. With digital dictionaries, spell-check and thesauruses available with a click or key stroke, why would anyone want these little books cluttering up your desk???

About the Author

Rabbi Yisrael N. Levitz, PhD, is a clinical psychologist, former pulpit rabbi and professor emeritus of Yeshiva University's Wurzweiler School of Social Work, where he held the Bennett chair in pastoral counseling. He was director of the Bella and Harry Wexner Kollel Elyon Program at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary and developed its pioneering rabbinic training curriculum. He is currently dean of the Center for Foreign Studies in Jerusalem, and director of the Family Institute of Neve Yerushalayim. He continues to teach rabbinic counseling to semichah students at the Gruss Institute in Jerusalem.

Rabbi Abraham J. Pastoral Care from a Jewish perspective

There are many books out there on counseling and pastoral care for clergy. Unfortunately, most of them are written by Christian clergy for Christians. The problems one encounters with congregants might be similar but the specific language and examples given are often difficult to relate to by a Jewish reader. That is why this book is so good. It also addresses halachic issues that obviously are missing in other books. The author comes from an orthodox background but even for conservative or reform clergy this is a great reference book to have on your shelf.

Nearly nine decades after his death, Mark Twain remains an international icon. His white-maned, mustachioed image is instantly identifiable throughout the world, the very picture of probity and high spirits (which explains why he's become the poster boy for products as diverse as beer, billiard tables, sewing machines, pizza, and real estate). Perhaps more importantly, Twain's books have retained all their power to amuse and enrage. How is it possible for the creator of a 19th-century "boy's holiday book" (Twain's own description of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer) to raise so many contemporary hackles? The answer is that Twain is a contemporary writer. Not, of course, from a chronological point of view--he was born in Missouri in 1835 and died in 1910 (having insisted that "annihilation has no terrors for me"). But Twain was the first writer to elevate the American vernacular to a high art. Sidestepping the starched-shirt diction of his peers, he created an idiom that resembled (but did not precisely duplicate) the wayward, slangy, ungrammatical music of American conversation. In "A Tramp Abroad, Mark Twain's unofficial sequel to "The Innocents Abroad, the author records his hilarious and diverse observations and insights while on a fifteen-month walking trip through Central Europe and the Alps. An underrated book that at times is absolutely hilarious

"A Tramp Abroad" is a humorous account of Mark Twain's travels in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. It is part travel guide, part commentary on European culture, and part tall tale. Like many of Twain's less-known works, "A Tramp Abroad" is rather uneven -- the chapters in the book range from rather boring to laugh-out-loud funny. Yet on balance, the humorous moments make up for the dull moments, and the majority of the less humorous chapters are still interesting. Apart from a few slow chapters, it provides a good read from beginning to end.

Some of the highlights of "A Tramp Abroad" are Twain's exaggerated account of his ascent of the Riffelberg (a mountain in the Swiss Alps), his comments on the peculiarities of the German language, and a hilarious episode in which Twain spends half an hour pretending to know a woman who remembers him though he doesn't remember her.

I have read most of Twain's works, and in my opinion "A Tramp Abroad" is not his best work, but it is definitely one of his most underrated books. It is not as good as his most popular works of fiction (i.e., Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn), nor is it as good as "Life on the Mississippi." But I found it to be the most entertaining of his purely travel-oriented books (the other books in that category being "The Innocents Abroad" and "Following the Equator"). The bottom line is that if you are a fan of Mark Twain's style, then you should find this book to be well worth reading.

Finally, if you are going to read "A Tramp Abroad," I highly recommend obtaining a version that contains all 328 of the original illustrations. While I normally would make this recommendation for any of Twain's works, it is especially important for this book since the text makes several references to the illustrations, and since some of the jokes in the text would not make sense without the illustrations. The only current edition I know of that definitely contains *all* of the original illustrations is the Oxford Mark Twain edition (ISBN 0195101375). Also, the Modern Library Classics edition (ISBN 0812970039) apparently has retained some of the original illustrations, since it contains a note stating that "... some illustrations have been omitted" (thus implying that some have not been omitted). I would assume that this edition has retained those illustrations which are essential to the humor, but I can't say for sure since I don't actually have it.

A matchless eye with an acidic pen

America's post-Civil War years brought a renewed interest in the European scene. Journeys
known as Grand Tours led tourists to take ship to the Continent. They fanned out across the
landscape with the intent to "know Europe." Their return home resulted in a flurry of
published accounts. Twain satirizes both the tourists and their writings with delicious
wit. Ever a man to play with words, his "tramp" refers to both himself and the walking tour
of Europe he purports to have made. By the time you've reached the end of the account of the
"walking tour" incorporating trains, carriages and barges, you realize that the longest "walk"
Twain took occurred in dark hotel room while trying to find his bed. He claims to have
covered 47 miles wandering around the room.
Twain was interested in everything, probing into both well-known and obscure topics. His
judgments are vividly conveyed in this book, standing in marked contrast to his more
reserved approach in Innocents Abroad. A delightful overview of mid-19th Century Europe,
Tramp is also interlaced with entertaining asides. Twain was deeply interested in people, and
various "types" are drawn from his piercing gaze, rendered with acerbic wit. Some of these
are contemporary, while others are dredged from his memories of the California mines and
other journeys. He also relished Nature's marvels, recounting his observations. A favourite
essay is "What Stumped the Blue-jays." A nearly universal bird in North America, Twain's
description of the jay's curiosity and expressive ability stands unmatched. He observes such
humble creatures as ants, Alpine chamois, and the American tourist. Few escape his
perception or his scathing wit. This book remains valuable for its timeless rendering of
characters and the universality of its view. It can be read repeatedly for education or
entertainment.

I have not read Twain since High School twenty five plus years ago but a friend on a newspapers book forums got me to read him again and A Tramp Abroad is the first book I picked. For the current generation this book may drag but for those of us who grew up reading books instead of playing computer games this is Twain at his best. One has to actually read into his writing to appreciate a lot of the irony but when this book is really on like the mountain climbing near the Matterhorn ,Twain makes Seinfeld seem like he's talking about something. A brilliant travel essay and by the way the Penguin Classics edition of this book in paperback is 411 pages long, not 670 pages .

Uncommon prayers...

It is an oft-quoted joke that if you ask an Anglican to pray, the Anglican will first reach for a book. Reality is, as it often is, twice as true and half as funny, but for a particular reason. The Anglican liturgical style is very rooted in tradition, and while innovation is acceptable, it must be done in full recognition and appreciation of the past. The primary book used during worship services is the Book of Common Prayer, a book that has remained the centre of Anglican worship in various formats since the 1600s. Each national church has the option of modifying the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) for itself; some nations opt to leave services that are less common, Occasional Services if you will, to a separate book.

This book, the Book of Occasional Services (BOS), is that book for Episcopalians, the American branch of the official Anglican communion. It is updated every three years for the most part, in response to developments at the triennial General Convention. Many Episcopalians can go through most of their church lives never realising this book exists -- many of the services here are performed so infrequently that the typical Sunday attender who doesn't go to much more than Sundays will likely never encounter them. However, this puts forth the real richness of Anglican worship possibilities. In this book one finds some more 'catholic' services -- Maundy Thursday, Stations of the Cross, Tenebrae, as well as other services.

The book is divided into three broad sections: The Church Year, Pastoral Services, and Episcopal Services. The Church Year deals with those services that come round once a year outside of typical Sunday or major holiday observances (those are contained in the BCP proper). This includes small liturgies that can be used even for home and family use, such as blessings of food at Easter time. Most Episcopalians don't practice the tradition of inviting the parish priest to their homes during the fifty days of Easter for a house blessing, but if they should, the pattern for worship is presented here.

The Pastoral Services include services of welcome and departure for congregation members, a vigil for the evening before baptism, regular house blessings, marriage anniversary celebrations, dedication of church properties, furnishings and ornaments, as well as restoring a church or consecrated property to secular use.

The final section on Episcopal Services includes consecration of chrism, reaffirmation of ordination vows, the ending of pastoral relationship, and the more ancient services of installing and seating a bishop. It also includes a service I feel should be used far more often, that is the Setting Apart for a Special Vocation. This tends to be used in monastic settings and the like, but I believe it could be used for so many more parish-based ministries, and could help reinforce the sense of the priesthood of all believers by showing the church is liturgically serious about lay ministers just as it is about the ordained clergy.

This book should be more widely known -- it is a history lesson in liturgy in many ways, and shows the greater richness of liturgical worship. Often, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Old Catholics, Roman Catholics, and others will use the liturgies contained in here; there are few things that are specific to the Anglican church proper, and the Anglican church has a history of permitting its liturgical resources to become the shared inspiration of Christendom as a whole.

Essential for Anglican Clergy, Possibly useful for others

There is no doubt that if you are Anglican (Episcopal) clergy, this book is a must have. It contains rubrics and services not in the Book of Common Prayer but still fairly common. It would also be highly useful for those involved in planning Anglican liturgies, whether they do so from the perspective of the ordained or not. Others will find much less use for it but it could still be useful or even interesting if that is where your interests lie.

Speaking as a member of the United Methodist clergy, I find it useful as a guide for planning some things which our refferences do not directly address. I also find it useful to come up with variations on things our books do address. The healing service it contains has been of particular use. We have a similar rite but are very free to adapt. This book helped in that adaptation.

I also like this book just for the simple fact that I am interested in liturgy. As such, the subject matter is of interest to me.

People from a non-liturgical background will find very little in this book to recommend it. The people who will find use for it are probably aware of it already.

The 2003 Book of Occasional Services

I decided to update. The BOOS that I had been using was the 1991 edition. The 2003 BOOS has a few more services for commissioning of ministries, but what I was pleasantly surprised to see was a new section with services in French and Spanish!

Destined to be a classic

When I was growing up in south Louisiana, there was a classic cookbook called "First You Make a Roux" that was in everybody's kitchen. This cookbook, by veteran cookbook and children's book author, Todd-Michael St. Pierre is destined to be this generation's classic. It pays homage to it's predecessor by offering up the basics...."And First You Make a Roux" (with 3 options, including the traditional plus two healthier. fat-free options), "The Holy Trinity, Wit or Wit-out Da Pope" (I won't explain...buy the book) several spice mixes...so, it's perfect for the novice aspiring Cajun/Creole chef. The cookbook is "peppered" with history, anecdotes and explanations of cultural expressions and traditions that draw you deep into the beauty, uniqueness and richness that defines New Orleans and south Louisiana. Todd-Michael's deep love of his native land and his heritage is evident, making it not just a superior cookbook, but an engaging read. The illustrations are top notch, especially the beautiful artwork by Diane Milsap that bookmarks each section. But in the end, it's all about the recipes. The classics are all there, and believe me they are classic....just like my MawMaw used to make....but they are embellished with whimsical new names that he uses to introduce the reader to different aspects of the culture (including honoring some of our literary greats). But it doesn't stop there...there are what I'll call the "nouveaux" classics like "Clotile's Crawfish and Brussel Sprouts" and "Lambreaux's Strawberry-Asparagus Salad" and "Storyville Creole Macaroni and Cheese"...and so many more that I haven't tried yet! And don't worry, he didn't leave out the classic New Orleans cocktails!! This is a treasure and I am buying copies for my family and everyone else I know for Christmas.

You can taste New Orleans as you read

As a displaced New Orleanian, The Taste of Treme delivers exactly what I needed. It replaced many old family recipes lost in Katrina, while documenting some of my fondest memories; makin' groceries, suckin da heads and pinchin da tails, beignets, Jazz Fest, `Holy Trinity wit' Da Pope'. I've read it cover to cover and have already prepared three delicious dishes. T-M has not only supplied great recipes, but also gives a taste of the `real' New Orleans in his inserts and photos. You will cherish this book. I also recommend it as a gift; share `the real thing', not only authentic recipes, but also facts about New Orleans in a fun and easy reading manner. You too will say Merci Beaucoup!

T~M delivers Taste of Treme to your Kitchen~

I am a longtime visitor to NOLA whose cobblestone streets and courtyards are embedded in my soul. I also have many of T-M's books. He pours his heart, soul and verse into each and everyone. Taste of Treme is yet another brilliant offering to all from T~M. Filled with photography, history, culture, celebrations you get to travel within your own kitchen for he has incorporated all you need to create these delicious dishes. Come serving time I guarantee approval from all and the conversation of Treme will, for sure, come up as you enlighten your guests with the tales and history of NOLA which is so close to his heart and mine as well. Being a fan of the HBO Treme I am loving this books connection it makes me feel like I am there when I am preparing a meal. I own and operate a Bed and Breakfast in NE Pennsylvania and use many of the recipes from all of T~M's books which my guests love. His books make New Orleans always feels close. This is a big, comprehensive book! I am in to the second chapter and am very impressed. I've read hundreds of books dealing with healing. While the subject matter is broad, Douglas Morrison does a fantastic job holding my interest and writing at a level easy to understand and move through. He covers subjects that I have not read in other books so I am looking forward to making my way through the book to those subjects. I highly recommend this book to those of us that are familiar with lots of healing modalities and understand healing comes from within. Good job Douglas!

Absolutely Amazing!

This book has blown my mind. It's simply amazing about how much we don't know about our own bodies and how our minds, bodies and souls are so intricately intertwined. Anyone who is trying to heal from any disease needs to read this book! I admit I am still not 100% sold on point holding. Seems completely out there and it's hard to believe it can really happen without trying to actually do it myself. I have looked online for some specialist who could help with point holding and am struggling to get my eating under control but I'm still working on it. But even without point holding this book has a lot of valuable info that can help anyone on their journey to wellness.

An Hour Length Read Tale of Survival in the Remote Scottish Wilderness

There weren't many books released as part of the Quick Reads series in 2013, so you've got to give it to Simon Kernick for contributing to what may be a dying (maybe due to due to the vast amount of cheap short stories on Kindle) but worthy initiative. The Quick Reads series of books aim is to increase literacy levels by encouraging those who don't like to read beyond magazines and comic books to try fiction through cheap priced short story length fiction and nonfiction. Kernick has successfully written a number of full length novels over a variety of genres and this one is different to all them. This time round a captive escapes her prison and flees naked into the Scottish wilderness where she stumbles upon a group of four English hikers. She can't speak a word of English but the hikers know she is in trouble. Whether they all want to help her is a different matter. The consequences of doing so may do more than ruin their holiday. If you liked the movie A Lonely Place to Die this Quick Read follows a similar plot, but obviously at such a short length it doesn't quite get into the complexities of that film.

Wrong Time, Wrong Place is only 92 pages long at a pretty decent sized font. It will take you less than an hour to read but I think easily achieves the objectives of the Quick Reads series and would encourage those who don't read much, to pick up another book. One of the better books of the entire series over the years. If you are after another short story by Kernick you should also check out The Debt. If you haven't checked out Kernick's full length novels, you should definitely do so, he's a great writer!

Heart Pounding !!!

An utterly chilling story. I could feel my heart pounding as I read it. At night I had nightmares. Not for the faint hearted. An excellent read and highly recommended. This was my first Simon Kernick book and I have already bought his first novel 'The Business of Dying'. I am planning to read all his novels as I really like his fast paced way of writing which keeps your adrenaline levels high. Well done Simon, keep on writing.

Kernick is a surprising wirter

I happend upon Simon Kernick's writing by accident, based on a jacket blurb by Lee Child. I entered Kernick's world with great interest as a huge fan of procedurals and looking to see how the Brits do it. Kernick is always very entertaining and I wish he had written a dozen more books - as I am running out of his work to read.

Great ideas - easy to create & fun to play

I really like this book. It has so many great ideas that my son (2 yrs old) loves. We have used them in baby play dates, and the activities were hits. Good book to have on hand.
