A Treasure

What I like about it:

1. Keucher puts all the financial stuff in the context of the larger horizon of total care of the parish.

2. It eschews financial jargon and uses normal English to explain the issues very simply and understandably.

3. It explains the issues simply and straightforward so that the reader gets an understanding of the issues and their implications - that is, why the church councilperson should care.

4. It is fun to read.

5. There are not a lot of numbers that might be off-putting.

6. It clearly explains why the lay leadership of the parish should care about the finances and provides them the way of understanding the issues.

7. Church council members will have sufficient knowledge and understanding to ask thoughtful and important questions of the Treasurer and Investment Managers.

I highly recommend the book for clergy, members of church councils and interested members of churches. Keucher uses not-for-profit organizations as examples of what he is explaining so it could be read with great benefit by members of advisory committees of not-for-profits also.

Remember the Future!

This excellent work by Rev. Keucher is very helpful in enabling church leaders get "on the same page" regarding their fiduciary duties to both the current chuch members and to those who come after. The author's easy-to-read style persuaded me to provide copies of the book to every member of our Vestry, Finance Committee and Foundation. The response from several of these church leaders was a profound "thank you, this was a wonderful learning experience in stewardship and church leadership."

Understanding the financial side of a church parish - the dark side that no one wants to talk about

A very quick and easy read on church finance. Yes, that part of church parish administration that no one wants to talk about. This is a must read for the parish treasurer as well as members of the parish council and the priest/minister. Today many churches are struggling financially and this book spells out how to start managing the money of the church parish so that buildings can be maintained, endowments are not squandered nor property sold in a fire sale.

The two most helpful chapters of the book were the first and last chapters. If the church lay leadership and clergy were to read only two chapters of this book, it should be these. The first chapter requires you to ask a very hard question about your church, namely does it have a vision of the future. Depending on how the lay leadership and clergy answer that question will have a great deal of impact on how that particular church manages its finances. The last chapter is very insightful because it spells out how to ask those who fill the pews each Sunday to give to support their church. Most churches do not know how to ask its members to give nor how to motivate them to give.

If there was one drawback to this book it would be the types of financial statements and records that should be produced as well as maintained by the treasurer.

An Eighth Grader reviews A Tale of Two Cities

This book is incredible. I read it last year (in eighth grade), and I love it. I love Charles Dickens' language and style. Whoever is reading this may have little or no respect for my opinions, thinking that I am to young to comprehend the greatness of the plot and language, and I admit that I probably do not completely appreciate this classic piece of literature. I do read above a 12th grade level, although that doesn't count for a whole lot. It took me a while to get into this book. In fact, I dreaded reading it for a long time. But nearer to the end, I was drawn in by the poignant figure of a jackal, Sydney Carton. In his story I became enthralled with this book, especially his pitiful life. After I read and cried at Carton's transformation from an ignoble jackal to the noblest of persons, I was able to look back over the parts of the book that I had not appreciated, and realize how truly awesome they are. I learned to appreciate all of the characters, from Lucy Manette to Madame Defarge. I also was affected by all of the symbolism involved with both the French Revolution, and the nature of sinful man, no matter what the time or place. My pitiful review could never do justice to this great book, please don't be discouraged by my inability.

The more Dickens I read, the more impressed I become at his skill as a writer. No matter the form, be it short, long, or a monolith like some of his best works, Dickens excels at changing his style of characterization and plot to fit whatever mode he writes in. "A Tale of Two Cities" is one of his shorter novels, and he manages to make the most of out of the allotted space. The compression of the narrative sacrifices Dickens's accustomed character development for plot and overall effect, but what we get is still phenomenal.
"A Tale of Two Cities" begins in 1775, with Mr. Lorry, a respectable London banker, meeting Lucie Manette in Paris, where they recover Lucie's father, a doctor, and mentally enfeebled by an unjust and prolonged imprisonment in the Bastille. This assemblage, on their journey back to England, meets Charles Darnay, an immigrant to England from France who makes frequent trips between London and Paris. Upon their return to England, Darnay finds himself on trial for spying for France and in league with American revolutionaries. His attorney, Stryver, and Stryver's obviously intelligent, if morally corrupt and debauched, assistant, Sydney Carton, manage to get Darnay exonerated of the charges against him. Darnay, a self-exiled former French aristocrat, finds himself compelled to return to France in the wake of the French Revolution, drawing all those around him into a dangerous scene.
Dickens portrays the French Revolution simplistically, but powerfully, as a case of downtrodden peasants exacting a harsh revenge against an uncaring aristocratic, even feudal, system. The Defarge's, a wine merchant and his wife, represent the interests of the lower classes, clouded by hatred after generations of misuse. Darnay, affiliated by birth with the French aristocracy, is torn between sympathy for his native country in its suffering, and his desire to be free of his past.
"A Tale of Two Cities" is a novel driven by historical circumstance and plot, much like the works of Sir Walter Scott, wherein the characters themselves assert less agency, finding themselves forced to deal with the tide of epic events. Richard Maxwell's introduction to this newest Penguin edition does a good job outlining the themes of doubling and literary influence that Dickens works with. One specific influence I discerned in reading "A Tale" that Maxwell doesn't metion is Edmund Burke's "Reflections on the Revolution in France," which if nothing else, gives the feeling that the rampant violence of the early revolution and the later Reign of Terror has brought about an irreversible change in human nature. While Dickens remains cautiously optimistic throughout the novel that France can recover, the tone of the novel speaks to the regression of humanity into a more feral, primal state, rather than advertise any real hope for its enlightened progress.
Despite the supposed dichotomy between England and France in the novel, Dickens seems to suggest throughout that there are no real differences, due to the way that human nature is consistently portrayed. With England in between two revolutions, American and French, Lucie's sensitivity early in the novel to hearing the "echoing" footsteps of unseen multitudes indicates a palpable fear that the "idyllic" or "pastoral" England he tries to portray is not exempt from the social discontent of America or France. In this light, stolid English characters like Miss Pross, Jerry Cruncher, and Jarvis Lorry appear to almost overcompensate in their loyalty to British royalty. In a novel that deals with death, religion, mental illness, I could go on and on for a week, but I won't. One of those novels whose famous first and last lines are fixed in the minds of people who've never even read it, "A Tale of Two Cities" demands to be read and admired.

It is the best of books, it is the worst of books....

I was first introduced to this book when I was 14 years old in my 8th grade English class. I found it utterly overwhelming; in its cast, its plotlines, its settings, its themes and most of all, in the intricate web the various relationships create. I only understood three things about this book. First, the two cities are London and Paris. Second, France was convulsing itself with the French Revolution while England was undergoing changes that would prepare it to enter the Industrial Revolution. Third, English in Dickens' time did not resemble English at the end of the 20th century, but somehow seemed similar to the English used in Hollywood epic movies from the 1950s and 1960s like Spartacus, Ben-hur, the Ten Commandments, Cleopatra, etc...

Years later, I picked up this book and reread it. I considered this a labor, not of love, but of duty. This book is so famous and used so often in English literature classes that I felt I had to read it again for a deeper understanding. What I got from this book a 2nd time around is a profoundly subtle yet accurate sociological and psychological study of what happens to a society and a community that is built on shaky foundations. Specifically, France was an aristocracy where a tiny minority owned all the land. The rest of society was organized into tiers that varied in their opportunities of becoming landowners. Because of this pyramid structure, most of the people hewed to the social order knowing that yes they get crapped on by those above them, but there's always somebody below them to take advantage of.

Eventually this social Ponzi scheme comes to a screeching halt with the French Revolution. Enough people have had enough that they decide to start over. In the process a lot of people get killed and a lot of property changes hands. So woven into this story of a society's collapse are individual tales of woe, revenge, sacrifice, retribution, love and lust. Some are wrongly imprisoned or executed, while others willingly trade places to free those who have been marked for punishment. Families are torn asunder, and friendships are made and betrayed.

Overall, this book is a classic; though not appropriate for anyone not in their mid-teens yet. Its careful depiction of a society warrants its reading for those interested in 18th century Western history. But it should be read with notes and study guides for its depth and complexity can easily lose the interest and focus of many readers.

A very well written group of fine stories. Mr. Lucy has been there done that in the outdoor world that is easy to see. He reminds you of the classic authors who strived for perfection in their writing. A sucker for any books that dwell in the world of upland hunting. I was very happy to add this one to my collection.

IT WILL LIFT YOU UP

Motivation pumps people up, but is often temporary and leaves when the "pumper" leaves. Inspiration lifts you up and remains when you leave. More than just show and explain how these great leaders motivate, this terrific book demonstrates how these leaders inspired their people to be all that they could be... and then some.

If you want to infuse energy in your people at work or in your personal life, you will be lifted up and pumped up by Baldoni's book and want to pass the energy on.

You remember stories long after concepts have left your mind. The stories that GREAT MOTIVATION SECRETS tells will stay with you long enough to emulate the "best practices" of these great leaders so that one day you, too, will have great stories of your own.

A must read for anyone who wants to energize the people around them.

Good examples of motivation

I've always seen motivation as more than what most do. It isn't something that is short lived if we don't want it to be. Like anything motivation can be kept alive through the use of logical steps.

You won't just stay on a feverish plateau as you have following an inspiring speech, you have to internalize it. You do this with discipline. You continue to use what you're motivated toward until it is a part of you. When that has happened, you get to a higher appreciation of what your goal is and then you give it to others. When they receive it and act on it, the originator receives feedback that re-energizes him as well. This cycle can continue as long as the cycle continues.

This latter part of motivation seems to be what Mr. Baldoni has captured very nicely. Motivation is almost like a skill, the more you use and refine it, the stronger it becomes.

Long ago I concluded that one person cannot motivate another person but it is possible to inspire another person to be self-motivated. This is not a matter of semantics; rather, of ownership. John Baldoni seems to be among those who agree. I read this book when it was first published (2005) and recently re-read it, curious to know how well John Baldoni's insights have held up since then. In my opinion, they are more valuable now than they were then, given the much greater importance that effective communication now has in a multi-cultural as well as multi-dimensional global marketplace.

Riveting Tale of Musical Genius

Joel Sachs quotes Henry Cowell as feeling that as a composer, he was most concerned with the future of music. But in this beautifully-written biography, there is much to inspire and inform us about the past: information about not only the unusual life and career of this composer of over 1,000 concert works, but also about challenges faced by artists as they lived through wartime, Depression, and more positively, efforts to promote peaceful exchanges in the climate of a Cold War.

This account of Cowell's life and work provides succinct overviews of his activities as creator, performing pianist, educator, cultural representative, and promoter of his colleagues' works as well. Multitudes of details lead the reader to be in awe at the accomplishments, networking, bravery, and generosity of this gifted artist--who flourished despite a highly impoverished childhood with little schooling, and despite four years in prison (on a charge that today would probably never be prosecuted at all). One also comes away with admiration for the role of his wife, Sidney Robertson Cowell.

A riveting book to be read and treasured not only by musicians and music students, but also by anyone interested in knowing more about how serious creative artists functioned and survived in America during the earlier half of the 20th century. The notes and bibliography provide welcome information about sources for further exploration. Hopefully this excellent and long-awaited book will spur further performances and recordings of Cowell's music. Bravo!

The definitive biography of a great American composer

This is a thorough, sympathetic and detailed (over 500 pp.) biography of one of America's most important musicians and composers. It is purely biographical -- the author notes that he wanted to write two volumes, with the second covering the music, but his publisher demurred. It is simultaneously heart-warming and heart-breaking; Cowell was an unusually generous, helpful person, who took some unusually harsh hard knocks in his life. It is unusual among composer biographies in openly discussing financial details, and part of the heart-break is learning how difficult it was, even for someone at the very peak of the profession, to earn anything like a secure living.

One of the hard knocks Cowell faced was a famous morals charge. Sachs necessarily treats that in considerable detail, objectively and without unnecessary prurience. One hopes that particular issue can now be laid to rest and all future writing about Cowell can get beyond it.

A natural result of reading this book will be to motivate you to listen to more of Cowell's music, and if the book accomplishes only that, reading it will have been time very well spent indeed. Cowell's music has largely dropped out of the regular repertoire, which is another ground for heart-break, because so much of his music is beautiful and wonderful. His later music often reminds me of Schubert, in being at once immediately enjoyable and seemingly simple, but growing more and more interesting on every repeated hearing.

an extraordinary life story, vividly told

A good biography can be as engrossing as any fiction and now I add Joel Sachs's "Henry Cowell: A Man Made of Music" to my short list of those that in and of themselves make for a great "read." Henri Troyat's "Tolstoy", and Robert Massie's recent "Catherine the Great" come to mind as I write. True, much like those subjects (curiously both Russian), Cowell was both a complex and a truly noble human being and his inspiring life story quite boggles the mind. But how easily its telling could have ended up as little more than fodder for academia had it not been rendered by such expert, imaginative, caring and balanced hands as Sachs, who in an unusually natural and fluid writing style, brilliantly gives palpable life not only to the composer and the wonderful cast of colorful and often historic characters (e.g. Ives, Gershwin, Percy Grainger) who figure in his exciting life, but as well to the fast-moving period in twentieth century music to which he so exuberantly and generously gave himself. In fact, I thank you Joel Sachs for not only telling this reader how much things cost and how much Cowell was paid in 1920, '40, or '60 but for taking the trouble to translate the amounts into 2010 figures that I can truly grasp their meaning ....a rare bonus that more biographers should consider, and just one of a myriad details, that, while not intruding into its flow, add authenticity and immediacy to Cowell's already extraordinary story.

My first Italian cookbook

My great grandfather was born in Italy. For a long time, I disliked Italian food because I can't stand pasta with tomato sauce. I said to myself, "Italians probably eat other things besides pasta with tomato sauce." My ancestors are from Lombardy, and this book specifically mentions that there are no recipes that include tomato sauce. I was SO excited when I read this line.
The downside of this book is that it requires expensive ingredients, but I'm happy to have bought it anyways, because of it's distinctly Lombardian approach.

I got this book so that I had the whole 'the food of series' now I am culling it and this one is one that has to go.

Some of the recipes are quite nice, mainly traditional recipes such as Risotto alla Milanese, Pepperonata, Bagna Cauda turn out well. The rest of the recipes are pretty bad, things I would not even consider trying because they either sound bad or are a waste of ingrediants.

Some of these include the Frogs Leg Ravioli, Horse Steak or Mixed Organ Meats. There is even a recipe for English Triffle in a north italy book? Another gripe were the contrived photos, instead of a nice risotto they present what looks like hardened spoonfuls of rice lumped in the center of the plate, or their Vitello Tonatto where in the recipe the sauce poured over, but in the picutre it looks thickened so it can be whipped and piped out in a swirl on top of the tuna. Awful presentation not representative at all of the final product.

Overall there are better books out there for the traditional recipes (like the Silver Spoon, Culinaria Italy) making this book redunant. 2 stars for a few nice tasting recipes.
