Behind every great success story
is a great motivation to succeed.
It drives us, inspires us, and compels us to reach for the most impossible of dreams. It is that indefinable ingredient we call motivation--and it is the key factor that separates ordinary people from the truly great leaders of our world. Motivation, however, can't be forced or faked. It is the responsibility of every great leader to create conditions that will empower individuals and teams to get things done in ways that they find enriching and fulfilling. Once motivated, they become transformed; they want to achieve, they want to do well. Why? Because their work matters--to their boss, to their teams, and to themselves.
This remarkable new book by John Bondoni explores the many ways that motivation has worked for others--and how it can work for you. Through the incredible life stories of highly successful men and women, Great Motivation Secrets of Great Leaders draws its action-ready principles from real-world examples. These leaders are an eclectic mix from different walks of life and different moments in time. There is a unifying theme; each knew, or knows, how to create conditions for people to motivate themselves. Some like Ernest Shackleton and Magic Johnson are outgoing men of action; others like Crazy Horse are soft-spoken role models. Thich Nhat Hanh, Frances Hesselbein and David Hackworth are eloquent communicators and outstanding manager-leaders. Pat Summitt and Colleen Barrett are coaches, one of college basketball, the other of Southwest Airlines. Mary Kay Ash and Sam Walton are successful entrepreneurs, as are Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig. Each possesses a unique style that draws people in. People want to participate in whatever the leader is doing, whether it's playing a sport, running a business, or exploring uncharted territory. And each of these leaders has an inspirational story to tell--a story with important lessons for us all.
This unique combination of leadership principles and real-life stories can easily be applied to your own career and your own dreams, linking personal actions to organizational results. Each chapter is filled with practical and proven techniques that can bring people together, raise enthusiasm for any endeavor, and focus individual energies on mutual goals. As an added bonus, the book's key messages and leadership lessons are highlighted in a handy section in the back for easy reference and special motivation.
Great Motivation Secrets of Great Leaders is truly a book of inspiration, one that will motivate you to motivate others--and make your dreams come true.

IT WILL LIFT YOU UP
By Mark Goulston
Motivation pumps people up, but is often temporary and leaves when the "pumper" leaves. Inspiration lifts you up and remains when you leave. More than just show and explain how these great leaders motivate, this terrific book demonstrates how these leaders inspired their people to be all that they could be... and then some.
If you want to infuse energy in your people at work or in your personal life, you will be lifted up and pumped up by Baldoni's book and want to pass the energy on.
You remember stories long after concepts have left your mind. The stories that GREAT MOTIVATION SECRETS tells will stay with you long enough to emulate the "best practices" of these great leaders so that one day you, too, will have great stories of your own.
A must read for anyone who wants to energize the people around them.

Good examples of motivation
By John Blakely
I've always seen motivation as more than what most do. It isn't something that is short lived if we don't want it to be. Like anything motivation can be kept alive through the use of logical steps.
You won't just stay on a feverish plateau as you have following an inspiring speech, you have to internalize it. You do this with discipline. You continue to use what you're motivated toward until it is a part of you. When that has happened, you get to a higher appreciation of what your goal is and then you give it to others. When they receive it and act on it, the originator receives feedback that re-energizes him as well. This cycle can continue as long as the cycle continues.
This latter part of motivation seems to be what Mr. Baldoni has captured very nicely. Motivation is almost like a skill, the more you use and refine it, the stronger it becomes.

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." John Quincy Adams
By Robert Morris
Long ago I concluded that one person cannot motivate another person but it is possible to inspire another person to be self-motivated. This is not a matter of semantics; rather, of ownership. John Baldoni seems to be among those who agree. I read this book when it was first published (2005) and recently re-read it, curious to know how well John Baldoni's insights have held up since then. In my opinion, they are more valuable now than they were then, given the much greater importance that effective communication now has in a multi-cultural as well as multi-dimensional global marketplace.
These are the great leaders on whom Baldoni focuses, listed in alpha order:
Mary Kay Ash
Colleen Barrett
Crazy Horse
Colonel David Hackworth
Frances Hesselbein
Bob Hope
Earvin ("Magic") Johnson
Ronald Reagan
Paul Saginaw
Sir Ernest Shackleton
Pat Summit
Thich Nthat Hanh
Sam Walton
Ari Weinzweig
He shares a remarkably substantial amount of information about each. These are mini-profiles of exceptional substance. He matches each with an appropriate dimension of leadership (e.g. communication, innovation, inspiration, mindfulness, motivation) as its role model. In fact, most exemplify several. Hesselbein as a communicator, for example, or Johnson and Walton as an entrepreneur whose achievements can encourage others.
Clarification: If I understand Baldoni correctly (and I may not), the greatness of a leader is primarily based on what that person has inspired others to accomplish. That is precisely what Lao-tse has in mind in this passage from the Tao Te Ching:
"Learn from the people
Plan with the people
Begin with what they have
Build on what they know
Of the best leaders
When the task is accomplished
The people will remark
We have done it ourselves."
I have always admired John Baldoni's approach to the most important business challenges. He seems to possess what Ernest Hemingway once characterized as "a built-in-shock-proof crap detector." He has an insatiable curiosity to understand what works, what doesn't, and why. He is also determined (driven? obsessed?) to share what he learns with as many people as possible.
