Great Russian Short Stories (Dover Thrift Editions)From Dover Publications

Among the country's greatest artistic contributions, 20th-century Russian literature was revolutionary in its approach to realism, injecting characters with human weaknesses familiar to all. It also provided fodder for other such important concepts as existentialism and even passive resistance, which was rooted in the works of Tolstoy, and practiced resistance, which was rooted in the works of Tolstoy and practiced successfully by Gandhi and Martin Luther King. The 12 powerful short stories in this collection are excellent examples of writing by the foremost authors from Russia's Golden Age of Literature.
Included are "The Queen of Spades" by Alexander Pushkin; "The Overcoat" by Nikolai Gogol; "The District Doctor" by Ivan S. Turgenev; "White Nights" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky; "How Much Land Does a Man Need?" by Leo Tolstoy; "The Clothesmender" by Nicholay Leskov; "The Signal" by Vsevolod M. Garshin; "The Lady with the Toy Dog" by Anton Chekhov; "The White Mother" by Theodor Sologub"; "Twenty-Six Men and a Girl" by Maxim Gorky; "The Outrage — A True Story" by Alexander Kuprin; and "Lazarus" by Laonid Andreyev.
Ideal for students of Russian literature, this magnificent collection will appeal to a wide audience.

Who are the translators?
By David R. Scott
This is a nice, cheap collection of Russian stories by a wide range of authors from the 19th and early 20th century, including some very nice tales by authors who are less famous (Garshin, Andreyev, Kuprin), in addition to gems by the well-known masters (Pushkin, Gogol, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov.) I would especially recommend "The Queen of Spades", a Pushkin ghost story that was turned into the great opera "Pique Dame" by Tchaikovsky, but one I've seldom seen anthologized.

One problem: I found no information in the book about who translated the stories. There are some pretty bad translations in the public domain, especially by Constance Garnett, which were written long ago (under madly intense deadlines in Garnett's case) with stiff, Victorian dialogue and known to contain inaccuracies. So one should not get this book unless one needs a copy -- any copy -- of the stories in the list, many of which can be obtained for free from Project Gutenberg (Gutenberg.org), where the translator is at least usually listed (again, avoid translations by Garnett, and stick with Maude if possible.) And if money is no object up to $10-$15, then one should seek out more modern translations, which tend to be not only more readable, but also more accurate.

Still, any differences in various translations will be slight, so this is a pretty good buy as a small gift for a casual fan of Russian Literature.

Stories by great masters, and stories of Incident primarily
By Shalom Freedman
'Dover Editions' do not provide the frills. We do not get a real introduction to the stories, to the Russian story in particular. We do not get notes on the stories. And we do not even get the names of the translators.
But we do get some of the finest of all Russian stories. These include those by the great masters Pushkin, Gogol, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Gorky. I did not compare translations of the stories with those by well- known translators of Russian Literature.
I focused on reading and enjoying stories by writers whose work I do not know Vsevolod M. Garshin, Theodor Sologub, Alexander I. Kuprin, Leonid Andreyev. Each of these stories has a narrative and characters which held my attention. They were story- stories whose focus seemed to be on incident and outcome- and not in revealing as in Gogol's 'Overcoat' or Chekhov's " Lady with a Dog" complex character and relationships.
I enjoyed most of these stories and believe most readers will also.

A nice no-frills collection of Russian short stories
By Z Hayes
The Dover Thrift Editions are great affordable collections of some of the world's literary masterpieces. Here we are treated to 12 Russian short stories by some renowned Russian masters and less familiar authors. The stories featured are:
"The Queen of Spades" - Alexander Pushkin
"The Overcoat" - Nikolai Gogol
"The District Doctor" - Ivan S Turgenev
"White Nights" - Fyodor Dostoyevsky
"How Much Land Does a Man Need?" - Leo Tolstoy
"The Clothesmender" - Nicholay Leskov
"The Signal" - Vsevolod M Garshin
"The Lady with the Toy Dog" - Anton Chekhov
"The White Mother" - Theodor Sologub
"Twenty-Six Men and a Girl" - Maxim Gorky
"The Outrage - A True Story" - Alexander Kuprin
"Lazarus" - Leonid Andreyev

This is a nice volume for not only students of Russian literature, but also anyone interested in the genre. The only major flaw in this collection is that the names of the translators are not included.

The Poetic Edda: The Mythological PoemsFrom Dover Publications

The vibrant Old Norse poems in this collection, which may have been brought together as early as the thirteenth century, authentically capture the ancient oral traditions of the Norsemen. In addition, their images of a mythical world profoundly influenced latter-day storytellers as Richard Wagner and J. R. R. Tolkien.
Known as the "Lays of the Gods," these mythological poems include the Voluspo, one of the broadest conceptions of the world's creation and ultimate destruction ever crystallized in literary form; the Hovamol, a compilation of sagacious counsels reminiscent of the biblical book of Proverbs; the Lokasenna, a comedy bursting with vivid characterizations; and the Thrymskvitha, a ballad of enduring loveliness.
The Poetic Edda is not only of the highest interest to students of antiquity; in the exceptionally detailed and complete translations included here, it offers lovers of poetry and myth some of the most remarkable surviving specimens from a distant age of poet-singers and oral traditions.

Impressive, enjoyable, and informative
By J. W. Kennedy
A Dover reprint of the Mythological section (The Lays of the Gods) from the poetic Edda, a collection of Old Norse poems compiled in the 1200s from older oral traditions. First published by the American-Scandinavian Foundation in 1923. It's a slow read, primarily because almost every page is crammed with footnotes. The translation seems pretty good - it attempts to imitate the form of the Old Norse poetry, and the language at times is very moving with vivid imagery and sonic resonance. The abundant footnotes bog down the reading, but they are necessary since the Eddic poems were originally composed for an audience already familiar with Norse mythology. I went into this book knowing nothing about the subject, and by the time I had finished, with the help of Mr. Bellows' notes along the way, I had developed a real thirst for more. Somewhat difficult reading, but for somebody with a literary bent this is an excellent introduction to the world of Norse legendry. It certainly begs a second reading, ignoring the footnotes and just enjoying the poetry.

the best translation
By samael775
the poetic edda is one of the greatest collections of poetry of all times. it contains the beautifully vivid "volupso", the norse apocalypse poem, the comedic ballads, the "wrangling of Loki" and "Lay of Thrmy", the proverbial wisdom of the "sayings of har" and the mournful lays of the larger-than-heroes, the volsungs and niflungs. the edda is better written than Beowulf, the more popular northern epic, and the rhythmic verse gives it more aesthetic appeal than most epic poems. the meter, based on alliteration and caesura, whether rhythmic fornyrdislag or lilting ljodahattr, is much more pleasing to the ear than classical blank verse, which has sticter syllable stress patterns. unfortunately, the edda is not in very good condition. their are gaps in the manuscripts, and there are numerous places where it appears a scribe covered up a gap with extraneous material. the poems vary greatly in quality, and you need a good understanting of norse myths to understand what is going on (i recommend Norse Stories: Retold from the Eddas by Hamilton Mabie). none the less, the edda is a wonderful read for fans of poetry, epics, or norse mythology.

Bellows translation does a very good job at preserving the metric rhythm of the norse poems, and a fairly good job of preserving the alliteration, while avoiding the archaism of Hollander. his grammer and word choice is a little "olde", but it is still far more aesthetically pleasing the Larrington's translation, and much more accessible than Hollander's. Dronke's translation is also excellent, but only one of five parts of it is currently in print, and it is absurdly priced, but see if you can find it at your library. unfortunately, thus far Dover has only reprinted half of Bellows' translation, this volume contains only the "mythological" lays, so we can only hope they will publish the heroic poems soon, but anyone serious about reading the edda will want to get more than one translation anyway.

By Dee
There are different opinion about different authors' translation of these books. My view is that anything translated from a foreign tongue into your own native tongue will almost always lose something in translation. The general idea is there.

Debtors' Prison: The Politics of Austerity Versus Possibility, by Robert Kuttner

One of our foremost economic thinkers challenges a cherished tenet of today’s financial orthodoxy: that spending less, refusing to forgive debt, and shrinking government—“austerity”—is the solution to a persisting economic crisis like ours or Europe’s, now in its fifth year.

Since the collapse of September 2008, the conversation about economic recovery has centered on the question of debt: whether we have too much of it, whose debt to forgive, and how to cut the deficit. These questions dominated the sound bites of the 2012 U.S. presidential election, the fiscal-cliff debates, and the perverse policies of the European Union.

Robert Kuttner makes the most powerful argument to date that these are the wrong questions and that austerity is the wrong answer. Blending economics with historical contrasts of effective debt relief and punitive debt enforcement, he makes clear that universal belt-tightening, as a prescription for recession, defies economic logic. And while the public debt gets most of the attention, it is private debts that crashed the economy and are sandbagging the recovery—mortgages, student loans, consumer borrowing to make up for lagging wages, speculative shortfalls incurred by banks. As Kuttner observes, corporations get to use bankruptcy to walk away from debts. Homeowners and small nations don’t. Thus, we need more public borrowing and investment to revive a depressed economy, and more forgiveness and reform of the overhang of past debts.

In making his case, Kuttner uncovers the double standards in the politics of debt, from Robinson Crusoe author Daniel Defoe’s campaign for debt forgiveness in the seventeenth century to the two world wars and Bretton Woods. Just as debtors’ prisons once prevented individuals from surmounting their debts and resuming productive life, austerity measures shackle, rather than restore, economic growth—as the weight of past debt crushes the economy’s future potential. Above all, Kuttner shows how austerity serves only the interest of creditors—the very bankers and financial elites whose actions precipitated the collapse. Lucid, authoritative, provocative—a book that will shape the economic conversation and the search for new solutions.

Kuttner, entrepreneur, editor, and columnist, declares, “Today, in the aftermath of collapse, we need . . . more public borrowing to jump-start a depressed private economy.” Yet our current public debate has been about less public investment, not more, and the author laments the widely held view that “in a deep slump the main goal of fiscal policy should be austerity.” The author sets out to address the current crisis and the history of debt and debt relief, hoping to bring clarity to the dynamics of austerity and the debates about historical debt relief and to consider alternatives. To move forward, Kuttner offers his basic principles, including, in the U.S., reducing principal and refinancing underwater mortgages, restoring the Glass-Steagall Act, and breaking up the largest banks. In Europe, he recommends moving from austerity to debt relief and new investment by giving the European Central Bank the U.S. Federal Reserve’s powers and then acting on them. This timely, thought-provoking book will add valuable insight to ongoing fiscal-policy debates. --Mary Whaley

Review
"A highly readable, thought provoking analysis of America's—and the world's—situation, a unique blend of history, economics, and politics that shows a clear way out of our morass, if only our politics would 'allow us to get from here to there.' Kuttner explains why we don't have to be doomed to a generation of depression, but that current debt, finance, and austerity policies make that a likely prospect. Even those who disagree with his conclusions will find his wealth of historical insights invaluable."

—Joseph Stiglitz, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics and author of The Price of Inequality

“Robert Kuttner has a gift for clear and forceful explanations of the complex dealings that brought the economy to its knees. Debtors’ Prison takes an innovative approach to economic history, using the lens of credit and debt to explore past boom-and-bust cycles and to illuminate the central issues in current economic debates. Kuttner’s impressive history also catapults the reader into the future, providing critical insight on strengthening the financial system. A must-read for anyone interested in our economic future.”

—Senator Elizabeth Warren

“[T]imely . . . take[s] readers on a historical tour of indebtedness, starting in 1692 with Daniel Defoe and ending with the recent recession and according to Kuttner, the misguided austerity regimes that sprang up in response . . . Kuttner draws thorough comparisons among the Depression, World War II, and present day fiscal engineering . . . An insightful and relevant look at the topic of debt in the United States and abroad.”

—Susan Hurst, Library Journal

“[C]ontributes a much-needed historical perspective that explores, as Kuttner puts it, ‘how the bad economic advice of the austerity lobby became the prevailing view.’ . . . arrive[s] at an opportune time . . . [Kuttner] hold[s] out the possibility of a different future.”
—Meg Jacobs, Democracy

“This timely, thought-provoking book will add valuable insight to ongoing fiscal policy debates.”

—Mary Whaley, Booklist

“Kuttner (The Squandering of America), cofounder and co-editor of the American Prospect, pulls no punches in his latest full-throated defense of Keynesian economics and repudiation of the modern neoliberal system . . . Kuttner’s deft overview of economic history—most notably his coverage of the Marshall Plan—demonstrates that economic stimulus can be very effective at ending recessions.”

—Publishers Weekly

“Debtors’ Prison is more than a devastating brief against the trans-Atlantic pursuit of austerity. It is a magisterial retelling of our history through the prism of the struggle over credit and debt. Navigating between countries and eras with the authority of a scholar and the narrative skill of a journalist, Robert Kuttner has written the authoritative guide to economic recovery and financial reform.”

—Jacob S. Hacker, co-Author of Winner-Take-All Politics: How Washington Made the Rich Richer—And Turned Its Back on the Middle Class

“Robert Kuttner nails the missing piece in Barack Obama’s presidency—the reason the American economy is still stalled and sickly. Read this book, then send it to the White House. Kuttner has the plan. The president needs to see it.”

—William Greider, author of Come Home, America

“No topics in modern political life have spawned more confusion, misdirected effort, and overall malarkey than ‘deficits’ and ‘debt.’ Robert Kuttner does us the enormous service of explaining which kinds of debt we should worry more about, and which kinds less—and how to manage public and private debt so as to sustain an age of broadly shared prosperity rather than of austere decline.”

—James Fallows, author of China Airborne

“[I]nformed, passionate, at times angry . . . The breadth of Kuttner’s review of the politics of credit and debt through American history is impressive.”

—Mark Levinson, Dissent

Good Background, Objectively Derived
By Loyd Eskildson
Author Kuttner contends that our overall perspectives on debt have now become impediments to economic revival. The alleged benefits of fiscal discipline to business confidence will not materialize because businesses will hesitate to invest in the resulting depressed economy. Moral claims keep getting conflated with practical economic questions, and our debates focus obsessively on the wrong debts - public, instead of private (student debt, underwater mortgages). Further, he points out that rising public deficits did not cause the recent financial collapse, rather the collapse caused the higher deficits. Reality - private debt caused the crash and prolongs its aftermath. Our children's prospects depend on whether the economy can product better job opportunities and less private debt in the immediate future, not on eg. projected finances for Social Security a decade from now.

Kuttner also sees double standards in our attitudes towards debt relief - corporations are allowed to shed pension plans, bankers get bailed out in their role as debtors while protected as creditors, and bankers usually are also in line ahead of pensioners in a bankruptcy. After 9/11 we increased military spending by over $3 trillion in the space of a decade - that was OK, but not spending a similar amount reviving our infrastructure. Meanwhile, today's retirees can't get decent returns on their savings because central banks have cut interest rates to historic lows to prevent the crisis from deepening. (Banks want cheap money for themselves, draconian terms for everyone else.)

The last great financial collapse was ended not by belt-tightening but rather by public investments post WWII like the GI Bill and the Marshall Plan, coupled with pent-up demand caused by rationing. Banks were well-regulated, and parasitic profits from financial manipulation was insignificant. Some exotic financial devices hadn't been invented yet, and most that had been devised were prohibited by New Deal reforms. Salaries in finance were relatively modest, except in investment banking where partners put their own capital at risk and did not expect to be bailed out. Chastened by the catastrophe of reparations extracted from Germany after WWI, nearly all Nazi-Germany debt was written off. The U.S. debt ratio rose between 2001 and 2008 because of two wars and gratuitous tax cuts for the wealthy, not an excess of social generosity. The deficit then spiked mainly because of a falloff in government revenues as a result of the recession. At the same time, declining real wages and inflated asset prices led the middle class to use debt as a substitute for income.

Prior to the Great Depression, 'Finance Capitalism' was predominant in an era characterized by small government, little regulation of banking and finance, and growing income and wealth inequalities. The consequence - an economy much more financially unstable that recorded numerous and prolonged economic contractions.

Beginning in the 1980s, the IMF and World Bank promoted what has become known as the Washington Consensus - developing nations needed to have tight fiscal policies, keep their exchange rates and labor costs competitive, privatize state ventures, reduce or eliminate subsidies, and open their financial markets to foreign capital flows. Two decades of intermittent crises brought the IMF to admit that this one-size-fits-all guidance often worsened recessions. Simultaneously, several major developing nations (Japan, South Korea, Brazil, China) attained very high levels of growth by rejecting key tenets of the Washington Consensus. They incubated and protected their industries, relied on government-business cartels, limited speculative money flows, and negotiated advantageous terms on which foreign suppliers and investors could participate. Taiwan built its dominance in microelectronics exports with a government industrial policy and subsidies. Beijing manipulates its currency to keep it undervalued to promote exports, and the U.S.-China Trade Commission estimates that half of China's industry is still owned by the state, directly or indirectly, and most of the rest is subject to mercantilist rules favoring Chinese-owned companies.

Washington promotes free-market capitalism through the IMF, WTO, OECD, and its own diplomacy, but indulges China's lapses. Why? You don't mess with your largest creditor - China held $1.16 trillion in U.S. Treasuries as of 6/2012, and almost half our foreign debt is owed China. Borrowing from abroad allowed the U.S. to outspend its national income between 2000 and 2008 by $4.3 trillion - most financed chronic trade deficits. Our chronic trade deficits are a mark of our falling economic performance and will eventually translate into reduced living standards, especially when interest rates rise to more normal levels.

'Countries don't go out of business' observed Citibank chairman Walter Wriston in 1982. But they frequently default - at least 250 times since 1800 according to one compilation. Often these were caused by adherence to the Washington Consensus, then those losing money in such loans bailed out by the Federal Reserve.

Hope for tomorrow
By R. Golen
This is a very hopeful book. It rightly points out that we were able to recover quickly from WWII. By we I mean everybody. Germany, for God's sake, recovered nicely in the 50's. Who would have thought? So if we can recover from the great depression/ WWII, the future is not hopeless. Here's a quote from the book that boils it all down:

Sooner or later (later unless we drastically revise prevailing assumptions and policies), recovery will occur. And at that point, the Fed will indeed allow rates to rise. Investors locked into low-rate long-term bonds of the Bernanke era will share the same fate as their counterparts in the 1950s and 1960s: they will have negative real rates of return. But there are worse things than a period of negative real interest rates. One is a prolonged depression. A key question today is whether gradual liquidation of government debt using the several strategies of repressing finance is better than the alternative of prolonged economic suffering. Though the rentier class paid a hidden tax in the decades after World War II, the real economy thrived: and, on balance, the rising tide soon lifted even the yachts.

I find this outlook very refreshing. We cannot forget that just 60 years ago we solved the economic/debt mess left by the depression/WWII. If we could handle that, we surely can emulate what happened in the late 40's, 50's and early 60's (the heydays of equitable prosperity) and take actions to bring wide-spread prosperity to the twenty-first century.

Debtors' Prison is the Perfect Metaphor for Current Rightous Fiscal Policy
By jem
Debtors' Prison is a perfect metaphor for morally righteous financial policy that imposes punitive fiscal actions. This is a courageous book from an economist who is able to explain causes and results of the recent US and European fiscal crises. It is divided into three major parts: the US economic crises that developed in 2007, the current European euro crisis, and a history of US fiscal policy from the Revolutionary War to the present day.

Modern day individuals, financial institutions, and governments are generally united in recognizing the futility of debtors' prisons as a means of forcing persons without access to employment to repay their debts. This book's comparison of the harsh reparation terms imposed after World War I which led to the rise of the Nazi party with the benevolence of the Marshall plan after World War II which led to European renewal is ample evidence that assistance in recovery trumps vengeance. But the US and Europe are both currently choosing morally righteous fiscal policies that are impeding economic recovery.

Kuttner is an economist in the Keyesianism tradition who does not hesitate to identify those he considers the villains. He lauds the FHA and FNMA established during the Great Depression for creating the long-term, fixed rate, self-amortizing mortgage system we now take for granted. But in 1968 FNMA (Federal National Mortgage Association) was privatized as the for-profit Fannie Mae and we all know how that turned out. It began a series of legal actions benefiting speculators over consumers. In his words, "What killed a highly effective home loan systems was a combination of random circumstance, bad economic theory, shifts in the distribution of political power, and financial innovations from hell."

This is the clearest, most straightforward description of our government's past and present failure to create and regulate a secure and fair national financial system. It is definitely a must read.

Numerical Methods in Finance with C++ (Mastering Mathematical Finance), by M. J. Capiski, Tomasz Zastawniak

Driven by concrete computational problems in quantitative finance, this book provides aspiring quant developers with the numerical techniques and programming skills they need. The authors start from scratch, so the reader does not need any previous experience of C++. Beginning with straightforward option pricing on binomial trees, the book gradually progresses towards more advanced topics, including nonlinear solvers, Monte Carlo techniques for path-dependent derivative securities, finite difference methods for partial differential equations, and American option pricing by solving a linear complementarity problem. Further material, including solutions to all exercises and C++ code, is available online. The book is ideal preparation for work as an entry-level quant programmer and it gives readers the confidence to progress to more advanced skill sets involving C++ design patterns as applied in finance.

Review
"This book leads the reader directly into the heart of C++ programming technique without too much fuss. And in so doing, the reader also learns some very important and fundamental methods in options pricing. I highly recommend this little gem of a book."
Professor Michael K. Ong, IIT Stuart School of Business

"I find the monograph to be an excellent integration of the object-oriented concepts of C++ and the classical numerical techniques used in quantitative finance. Throughout the book, there is an introduction to the numerical technique to be used, along with the need for such a method from the prospective of financial mathematics. After this discussion, the C++ source code that implements the technique is not only given but also annotated to highlight or to clarify reasons for the use of certain object-oriented constructs. As the authors comment, there are some source files which are not listed but are available from the publisher's web site.

The monograph is an exceptional book for demonstrating the implementation of the various aspects of C++ in a very concrete fashion. There is substance given to C++ concepts that are introduced in basic programming courses but seldom framed in a realistic setting. The reader, however, should have some familiarity with C++ and mathematical finance, prior to reading the monograph. The book is not intended to be an introduction to either object-oriented C++ or mathematical finance. With such a background, the style and the content of the book make for an informative experience."
Professor Sherman Wong, City University of New York

Focus on this book is mediocre
By E. Lau
As a disclosure before starting my review, I have worked with C++ in the area for years. While I had expected this book to cover more on financial mathematics, I am not giving this book 3 stars for any of that since it was mentioned in the Preface that it's a focus on connecting financial mathematics with C++. However, since the entire first half of the book is about C++, I will review it as more of a beginner's C++ book.

To begin, the author seems follow some of the worst C++ practices I've seen. I have worked with (and currently work with) developing strategies with C++, and I can say that if you are using single letter variables everywhere without comments pointing out what they mean in a complex model, someone is bound to make a wrong assumption and make a mistake. It certainly makes sense using single letter variables in numerical programming in many cases, but at the least, it should be commented.

The above is probably not too bad since it can easily be refactored, and bugs are probably not too terribly difficult to fix. What does really bring up my attention is his liberal use of non-const references. Sending in and modifying random variables in the parameter (with some not being modified) is extremely poor practice, and it makes development very difficult. Debugging may become very time consuming, and algorithms could easily have unexpected errors from "Get" functions modifying their data.

This also brings up the point that he copies far too many variables into functions. I would normally not be this critical with authors, but the fact that he has brought templating in the book (which I personally consider somewhat advanced), he should have at least included some mention of encapsulating options data as a struct/class and passing it into functions as a const reference to avoid copying (which he does mention in the book, by the way).

I can go on much longer with other poor practices in the book, but I'd also like to mention some positive points. As someone new in derivatives, the author provides a very simple to understand format for mathematical equations. I have only studied up to and including multi-variate calculus, discrete math, basic probability/statistics, and linear algebra, and I can easily understand all the math in this book. The examples, while following poor C++ practice, are not too difficult to follow provided you know what each variable means. Additionally, the format of the book (mostly bulleted points) makes it a pretty easy read - even for a subject that can get unbearably complicated and verbose.

Overall, while the book isn't horrible, I would not recommend it to people without C++ knowledge simply due to the poor practices it may teach in linking financial math and C++. If you already know C++ and would simply like some ideas for your code, it could definitely be helpful. In this case, I would jump straight to chapter 4 (Non-linear solvers) and start from there since the first three chapters are all C++ basics.

I would recommend a reader to simply read the original Stroustrup book for C++: http://www.amazon.com/The-Programming-Language-4th-Edition/dp/0321563840
He covers best practices and topics ranging all over C++ with detail. As a supplement to Stroustrup's book, I feel that Effective C++ is one of the best C++ books out there in terms of practice:
http://www.amazon.com/Effective-Specific-Improve-Programs-Designs/dp/0321334876

For those like me and already know C++ to the very low-level intricacies, I'd recommend reading Dan Stephanica's financial engineering book: http://www.amazon.com/Primer-Mathematics-Financial-Engineering-Edition/dp/0979757622
I personally found it to be very easily understandable with a wealth of information. It covers practically all the topics in this book other than Monte Carlo (if I recall correctly).

If you are fairly well-versed in math, the more challenging book would be the Springer book to Stochastic Calculus. It's very informative, but it may take some time for those without familiarity in probability/mathematical language to read:
http://www.amazon.com/Stochastic-Calculus-Finance-Binomial-Textbooks/dp/0387249680

Contents too little and too simple
By aTrader
If this book was published 10+ years ago where quantitative finance has not been flooded with tons of books, then I may give it a 4 star. But as of today, people just wrote too many books. I literally finished the book within 2 hours of reading. All the material are just too simple. It doesn't offer anything new to the reader. In math, it has no math, no proof no modelling, in numerical methods, it is thin and light and provides no insight into numerical stability, in C++, it is like an "abc" for C++. I wonder what is the target audience for this book? I then looked at the series of new books "Mastering Mathematical Finance" from Cambridge Univ press, all claim to be "short books". Come on, we have enough books! bring something new and meaningful to the table please.

Good Introduction to C++ in Finance
By Shawn Pope
A good introduction to C++ programming especially relating to numerical methods in pricing options. Topics covered include Binomial Pricing Theory and Monte Carlo pricing methods. For a new student like myself it has been a welcome introduction into the material.

Review
'"There is no author whose books I look forward to more than Vaclav Smil" -- Bill Gates "This book is about physical rather than social sciences. It explores important topics around how energy works, how our production and use might evolve, and how this affects climate change." -- Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook "A breath of fresh air and a gem in the bookshop. Rich in thoughtful insights and written in sparkling prose" -- Professor David G. Victor - School of Global Policy and Strategy, UC San Diego

Delightful for nonbeginners
By Brian H. Fiedler
This is not truly a Beginner's Guide. The book is more like an Executive Summary of the many writings by the prolific author, up to 2005. No references are given. There is no appendix with useful tables of values. However, there are many useful tables, lists and values dispersed throughout the book. The book has a few flubs: confusing ultra-violet radiation with infrared, missing a "per year" in a sentence, and draft animals pulling with kg of force.

Some more serious problems occur on page 152, where the parenthetical definition of "net energy ratio" is actually the the definition of EROI, energy return on investment (of energy). The numbers discussed in the remainder of the paragraph are actually values of 1- 1/EROI . A true beginner would be flummoxed.

Another grievance is that the difference between installed capacity of wind power and the actual production of electrical power is not emphasized forcefully enough. A wind production number is given on page 169 (as a percent of world electrical power), but you are on your own to figure out the important capacity factor, and then to put wind power in a fair comparison with nuclear power and coal power. The summary of wind energy is otherwise excellent, as is the summary of photosynthesis and biofuels. All ethanol fans should read it.

The focus of the book in not renewable energy policy. The scope is much more grand, all done wonderfully in consistent S.I. Units, with respect for the intelligence of the reader. The author gets to the point. Energetics is the most concise way to organize knowledge of your universe. The brilliant author summarizes nearly all of it in 176 pages: your cells, your home economics, your technology, your planet. For larger scale solar and galactic - you may need to shop elsewhere. Presentation of energetics leads to implications in the sociology of jet travel, urban planning, and history of science and technology. For example, on page 93 we learn how the celebrated inventor James Watt delayed progressive development of the steam engine.

The book would be a great investment of time and money if a better book was not available: "Energy in Nature and Society", published by Smil in 2008. That book has more figures, of better quality, appendices and approximately 3 times the amount of text. The overlap in not complete, though. You won't find that tidbit about Watt in the 2008 work, or the fact that swarms of insects soiling the leading edge of wind turbine blades can cause a nearly instant drop in power production by up to 20%.

five stars for both content and clarity of presentation
By chaitanya pullela
This is an outstanding introduction to the concept of energy. The contents are organized very well. The first chapter starts with the basic concepts of energy and its measurement, and then proceeds in an "evolutionary sequence" with a discussion of energy in -- nature, human history, present society, and future. The chapters are as follows:

1. Energy in our minds: concepts and measures
2. Energy in the biosphere: how nature works
3. Energy in human history: muscles, tools and machines
4. Energy in the modern world: fossil-fueled civilization
5. Energy in everyday life: from eating to emailing
6. Energy in the future: trends and unknowns

I highly recommend this book to all. In fact, i think this book should be a required reading for every citizen because energy is such an important factor in human life and economy, and assumes more importance in current times because of its relevance to sustainability. Added bonus that its an entertaining read.

Excellent
By Graybeard
This is an excellent primer on energy for people who want to be energy-literate. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach, discussing energy from historical, scientific, industrial, economic, end-use, social, environmental, political, legal, regulatory, and global perspectives. This 181-page book (176 pages of narrative) contains 33 helpful charts and diagrams, plus many excellent sidebar essays. Highly recommended.

A Biblical and Balanced Approach to the Topic
By Cameron B. Clark
This book provides a biblical and balanced approach to an otherwise misunderstood and controversial topic: the healing power of the human mind. Dr. Backus is aware of the misunderstandings, especially among Christians, that cloud the issue so he renders due cautions and clarifications during his exposition. Although he believes that miracles and instant healings through prayer do happen today, he distinguishes between a supernatural healing (a miracle) which is entirely an act of God and the natural process of healing which involves our cooperating with God to create a healthy inner life based upon truth, especially and ultimately God's truth revealed in the Bible. He disagrees with those Christians who think that God always wills the healing of our bodies here on earth and think that healing always happens if the person praying has "enough faith" (pg. 110). These same Christians usually "see God's promise to preserve the health of his people, as recorded in Exodus and Deuteronomy, as a pledge to perform miracles routinely" and "think that by 'claiming' these promises they can unleash miracle-power as if by magic from heaven" (pg. 51). Instead, Dr. Backus believes that "the Exodus and Deuteronomy promises assume that God's people will live in a relaxed state of trust - a state of inner peace and rest and obedience" (pgs. 51 - 52).

Dr. Backus also distinguishes between spiritually unhealthy false religions (including New Age and Mind Science cults) and the scientific (and Biblical!) fact that "your health and your healing can be made better or worse by what you do with your mind" (pg. 63). Regarding "positive thinking," he asserts: "If you must choose between a positive thought and a true thought, always choose what is true." He adds: "Sometimes truth has a negative effect - angering us, causing grief, frightening us. But the whole truth transforms those negatives into positives, because God turns evil into good. When you tell yourself the whole truth you don't deny pain or illness, you defeat it" (pg. 129). He gives examples of "illicit positive thinking" that deny reality and also gives examples of confronting negative reality with positive culmination (the "whole" biblical truth) that brings hope and can contribute to one's physical healing. Dr. Backus clearly points out that "most diseases do not result from a single causal factor" and that "even so-called 'terminal' illnesses are not, in themselves, sufficient to cause death. Nutrition, exercise, and rest make a significant difference, as does a sense of belonging to a group of other people" (pg. 53). Also, renewing our minds with Christian truth as taught in the Bible promotes healing; hence, the (revised) title of the book: The Healing Power of a CHRISTIAN Mind.

Although many of the health principles expounded in this book are natural and supported by scripture, Dr. Backus also promotes prayer and the possibility of supernatural healing from God. I highly recommend this book. It is practical, easy to read, and lifts one's spirit with the biblical hope that grounds the Christian gospel.

The Healing Power of a Christian Mind
By Suzanne P. Turner
I am currently fighting cancer. Someone handed me this book and it has been great in helping me keep my focus on Jesus Christ the one who has my life in His hands and the one who is calling me to LIVE LIFE, even as I battle with this cancer. The book has been a tremendous help to me and I have been passing it on to other fellow cancer strugglers. Praise God for he shows us life and the miracles in them each day that He gives us! Thanks so much for writting this book Dr. Backus!

Heaven's Healing
By logosapiens
This book is a companion to Tell Yourself the Truth also by the same author. Many examples of improbable healing are used to show the reader the positive power of prayer along with good health habits. The Healing Power of the Christian Mind is to be distinguished from New Age healing in that God and the believer are partners with faith and godly principled health habits taking precedence over the self in the healing process.

Like Telling Yourself The Truth the patient is urged to keep self talk diaries but with the Bible and examine the basis of disbelief which is always a lie or, in this book, a departure form the Word. Much scripture and good reasoning underlies this book as the author adeptly uses the Bible as a guide for healing. There is much focus here on the Bible which contrasts with Telling Yourself the Truth.

The book cites some amazing cases lacking footnotes which is frustrating. Scripture also gets misquoted when illness and health are meted out to the Egyptians and the Jews respectively during the Exodus. Neither party was partnered with God but it was God alone who decided who would get health or sickness p 52.

George Orwell often commented on how novellas were harder to sell for publishers than novels because of the high cost per page of smaller books. Books that should be tracts get expanded for economic reasons. In this case, the material deserves two treatments: a tract for those needing quick information after a bad diagnosis and a text book edition for a more detailed look at this important subject. This well written and concise book deserves to be read.

The shortcomings here can be overlooked though when you add this book to your library next to your Bible and pills as your health inevitably fades away with the passage of time.
