Of all Jane Austen's heroines, Emma Woodhouse is the most flawed, the most infuriating, and, in the end, the most endearing. Pride and Prejudice's Lizzie Bennet has more wit and sparkle; Catherine Morland in Northanger Abbey more imagination; and Sense and Sensibility's Elinor Dashwood certainly more sense--but Emma is lovable precisely because she is so imperfect. Austen only completed six novels in her lifetime, of which five feature young women whose chances for making a good marriage depend greatly on financial issues, and whose prospects if they fail are rather grim. Emma is the exception: "Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her." One may be tempted to wonder what Austen could possibly find to say about so fortunate a character. The answer is, quite a lot.

For Emma, raised to think well of herself, has such a high opinion of her own worth that it blinds her to the opinions of others. The story revolves around a comedy of errors: Emma befriends Harriet Smith, a young woman of unknown parentage, and attempts to remake her in her own image. Ignoring the gaping difference in their respective fortunes and stations in life, Emma convinces herself and her friend that Harriet should look as high as Emma herself might for a husband--and she zeroes in on an ambitious vicar as the perfect match. At the same time, she reads too much into a flirtation with Frank Churchill, the newly arrived son of family friends, and thoughtlessly starts a rumor about poor but beautiful Jane Fairfax, the beloved niece of two genteelly impoverished elderly ladies in the village. As Emma's fantastically misguided schemes threaten to surge out of control, the voice of reason is provided by Mr. Knightly, the Woodhouse's longtime friend and neighbor. Though Austen herself described Emma as "a heroine whom no one but myself will much like," she endowed her creation with enough charm to see her through her most egregious behavior, and the saving grace of being able to learn from her mistakes. By the end of the novel Harriet, Frank, and Jane are all properly accounted for, Emma is wiser (though certainly not sadder), and the reader has had the satisfaction of enjoying Jane Austen at the height of her powers. --Alix Wilber

ONE LEGGED DANCER

Finally, this morning, I had the chance to sit down and finish reading ONE-LEGGED DANCER. It's a book that deserves cover-to-cover reading: the poems lean together so well, truly a book of a unified sensibility. I loved it, felt myself taken in more and more as I progressed. They are poems of rich awareness, rooted in the body, generous in their embrace of the world, neither denying the self in that world but always ready to love the NOT-ME. Even with the many first-person accountings, not once did I feel a verging toward solopsism. Instead, I always felt an honest engagement, one of accepting oneself in the environment rather than celebrating oneself at the world's expense. When I look back for poems that were special highlights for me, I find myself rereading ones like "Adobadora," which are so much of the body, so particular of felt experience,
that my male sensibility joins you in your human experience. It's a wonderful book.

Not what I expected, but still very useful

The book introduces the basic types of tessellations and presents many examples. Note that the book title say "32 plates _to_ color" and not "32 color plates". The "look inside" feature shows already colored tessellations, but they are not in the book. It's not a problem, but don't expect to get color plates. This book is more geometric in its approach than "Principles of Pattern Design" by Proctor (isbn 0-486-26349-5) and may complement it nicely.

Explains the uses of tessellations and manipulations of shapes and perception. The coloring pages are also very cool. They start off easier and progress to quite elaborate. Great for colorists of geometric shapes/patterns and you can learn to draw some as well.

Awesome story

The mysterious story about the two wolve girls. Fantastic book. Had a lovely time reading this book. Comes in mint condition. The book was required for one of my college courses and it was fantastic. Professors never really assign a good book to write an essay about. However I loved reading this book and writing about it. The first time through I was kind of confused at what was going on because the text was so difficult. But as I began writing my paper, I fell in love with the story more. Highly suggested!

Wow- This book was different. Told in a perspective that left me a little confused at times- yet I still wanted to finish every page.
The story is one of a kind and will really make you thankful for your life. Such a different culture than any that I have ever experienced- gave me an eye opening look at life and how different it can be from one human to the next.

Ellis O. Briggs (1899-1976) entered the Foreign Service of the United States in 1925. During the next 37 years he was ambassador to seven countries; the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Czechoslovakia, Korea, Peru, Brazil, and Greece. An eighth appointment, to Spain, was cancelled when he retired due to illness. He also served in Cuba, Chile, Liberia, and China. His memoirs are an exuberant record of a gifted diplomat. Briggs reached the highest rank attainable in the Foreign ServiceCareer Ambassadorand received the Medal of Freedom from President Eisenhower for his service in wartime Korea. He gained a reputation for successfully handling large diplomatic missions and dealing with difficult situations. But his greatest virtue was his honesty, his passion to report things just as he saw them and make policy recommendations regardless of conventional wisdom in Washington. He employed high sense of humor, often to devastating effect, on bureaucrats at home as well as adversaries abroad. His strong views about policy sometimes placed him in conflict with others; fellow Dartmouth graduate Nelson Rockefeller had him fired from the Foreign Service because of disagreements (Briggs soon returned to the Service). A down-to-earth New Englander with an abiding love of the outdoors, Briggs was devoted to his wife and family as well as to his country. Proud Servant is full of insights about the practice of diplomacy in this century and provides a fascinating account of the modern Foreign Service.

Life as an Ambassador

This book is brimming with facts that although sometimes aren't necessary, but all in good standards. What I enjoyed most about this book was the road he took in order to become an ambassador. It is one of the more detailed journies of this type that is written in a book. Some of the parts in this book that deal with his diplomatic policy are hard to understand, but for the most part i was able to understand somewhat what he was trying to convey. This book did lag in a few parts, it is less entertaining and more informative...it did take me a while to finish reading the book. I woudl recommend it because it seems to give a true heart felt perspective on what life is like to be a career ambassador.

Great gardening and cooking

This is a great book for home gardeners. Suggestions can be modified depending on geographical location. Then there is the personal commentary and great cooking suggestions. I have had this book since it's original printing in 1970 and treasure it immensly. I've just ordered it for my daughter who lives in the Seattle area.

And then what happened?

I bought this movie adaptation for my son since he really enjoyed the Captain America movie and it looked like a good book we could read together. The story more or less covers what happened in the film, with considerations for the younger age group. You never actually see the Red Skull's exposed face, for example. It features a full size image from the movie on every other page, which is a major plus.

So why only a three-star rating for this otherwise impressive storybook? It has NO ending. You know that battle at the end were...well, I'm not going to give away the details in case you haven't seen the movie yet, but the book abruptly ends with some cheesy line about how Captain America has to win this fight. That's it. No final conflict, no resolution at all. I understand the ending might have been hard to soft-pedal for younger readers, but they didn't even try.

I don't regret buying the book, if for no other reason than the nice illustrations. I wish they could have delivered a complete story though.

The book profiles Johann Schmidt (who is also Red Skull), Colonel Chester Phillips, Agent Peggy Carter, Dr. Abraham Erskine, Steve Rogers (who becomes Captain America), and a few other characters. What makes this book unique is that it is written in the form of several letters of correspondence and top secret files. Though a picture book designed for younger readers, adults will learn a great deal about all of the major characters of the Captain America movie. In short, this book is a great supplement to a great movie. Highly recommended.
