In this gripping historical thriller, the search for a mysterious and powerful object hidden in the heart of Barcelona leads to ambition, desire, love—and murder
An intriguing letter from his adoptive father, Artur, turns novelist Enrique Alonso’s world upside down. Artur, a well-known antiquarian in Barcelona, reveals that he has discovered an ancient manuscript, but he feels uneasy, as though he’s in over his head. But before Artur can piece together the final part of the puzzle, he is attacked and murdered. Enrique rushes to Barcelona to investigate his father’s death and retrieve the book. His ex-wife, Bety, a philologist, comes to his aid and the two set about translating and deciphering the encrypted text. Written in Latin and Old Catalan, the manuscript holds the key to the location of a priceless object dating back to the Middle Ages, and a secret closely guarded by the Jewish community living in the city’s Gothic Quarter. When Enrique and Bety realize they are not the only ones following the trail, it becomes a race against time to find the mythical object that has the power to transform lives.

Interesting but not great
By Swimmer
This book is hard to review because there were sections I did enjoy quite a bit and lots of sections where I was bored and frustrated. It took well over 1/2 of the book before things started to connect and I found many passages that were long winded and un-necessary. One example is that the author explains there 3 ways to walk to the cathedral - there seemed to be no reason why the character selected one route over the other - just seemed like extra detail that did not add value to the story. I also found the main character hard to enjoy - he gave up far too easily and seemed like a child who follows his whims without a lot of rhyme or reason. I liked the plot and the history was usually quite interesting except for the Inquisition torture (TMI for me).
Overall 3 stars.

Only books have the answers
By kcos
truly excellent read. i was intrigued from the beginning. as a self proclaimed bookworm, i love mysteries that center around the discovery of a book, to give but one example 'the name of the rose'. 'the antiquarian' surprised me with its ease of read and continuity. this book will intrigue not only scholars and researchers, but book lovers in general. the mystery spans generations and involves some quirky, but very clever characters. even though i'd guessed who the killer was by the first few chapters, it still managed to keep me enthralled. much like the characters themselves, i needed to solve the real mystery.... what was the hidden object, what was its significance in the lives of so many different people, and why had it been hidden for centuries. as the author himself says, the importance of the discovery is in the journey, not the end. well done mr sanchez, i hope more of your books will be translated into english and published on kindle very soon. i'm looking forward to more of your compelling, much researched and intelligent story-telling.

Very good..
By Mycaza
I liked very much, the plot, the mistery and also the historical knowledge. I am not so sure about the main character, Enrique, for me he lacked force and determination, but maybe, that is what the author wants. Also, sometimes I found the progression of the action a little slow for my taste. But is a good book and you want to read to know who the killer is...
