great addition to a surgical library
By Dustin
Awesome book for general surgeons, surgery residents, and overzealous medical students wanting to go into surgery. Some of the older versions have very detailed info on forget surgery that we don't routinely perform anymore (ulcer surgery, duodenal surgery with tips on the difficult duodenum, etc)

The Hourglass Solution: A Boomer's Guide to the Rest of Your Life, by Jeff Johnson, Paula Forman

Seventy-five million baby boomers are finding themselves bound by habits and pursuits instigated many years ago—and for a large percentage of those boomers, significant aspects of their lives no longer satisfy. But by joining revolutionary insight to highly proprietary prescriptive advice, The Hourglass Solution provides a proactive and pragmatic way to lead a better life after 50.

Johnson and Forman evaluate the life narrative through the lens of an hourglass—proposing that those in early adulthood are at the top of the hourglass, able to select from many options, while those in middle age are in the hourglass’s neck, constrained by the choices they made earlier in their lives. The Hourglass Solution explains how those approaching their fifties (and beyond) can still find a wealth of opportunity by recognizing and pursuing new directions, free from the restrictions imposed by an earlier choice. Like Gail Sheehy’s Passages before it, The Hourglass Solution will enlighten and inspire a generation of readers to regain control over their lives and well-being.

About the Author
Jeff Johnson, Ph.D., is a trained psychologist and advertising professional frequently quoted in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

Paula Forman, Ph.D., became an adjunct sociology professor after her 25-year advertising career.

They both live in the New York City area.

From AudioFile
Actor Gary Collins's natural optimism and gee-whiz phrasing work well for some segments of this guide to aging. But his tone becomes narrow and predictable as the audio unfolds. Though his voice is enjoyable, he doesn't convey the ebb and flow of the audio's deeper themes. Maybe it's because the authors, even when they're trying to look on the bright side, dwell on the darker aspects of growing older--a message that clashes with Collins's upbeat energy. They say that mid- and late-life choices are narrowed by early-life decisions but can open up with directed effort. The audio's flow is also cluttered by comments that are attributed to the authors individually. The structural device of alternating speakers in the text doesn't work well with the audio's solo narrator. T.W. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

Not really a solution...
By Dr. Cathy Goodwin
I keep looking for a really good book about this book's topic: how boomers can plan for the rest of their lives. And I'm beginning to wonder if it's possible to write helpfully on this topic. Authors typically begin by promising "life after midlife" and "opportunities for starting over." But when it comes to identifying genuine possibilities, they warn us to make trade-offs, grit our teeth and learn to live with a diminished life. As a reader, I feel cheated.

Hourglass Solution does get some things right. For example, on page 73 they quote statistics suggesting that 25% of boomers live alone and 30% never had children. But they don't discuss the unique challenges of living alone and being childless as one grows older. They acknowledge - rightly - that friendships can be problematic. This topic deserves at least a chapter.

Secondly, the authors point out that changing one's life without the support of friends and family can be challenging. Not exactly new and novel, but very real.

What bothered me most about the book was the authors' call for flexibility and openness to change and their own acknowledgment that the rewards of openness can be less than spectacular.

And while encouraging flexibility, they also warn that, "By age 50 the votes are in..."

Similarly, on page 189, they quote an interviewee who advises everyone to move in their fifties because "by age 60 you'll be too tired or too comfortable." Now that's cheery and not necessarily accurate. I've known 60-somethings who ran marathons and others, the same age, who could barely walk around the block.

For example, the authors advise boomers to be willing to move. "Moving enables other choices," they say. You limit options when you're attached to a house or city (p. 74).

But they don't discuss the downside of moving. Location has an enormous impact on our ability to get the things that are most meaningful to us. If you don't fit into your location, it's very difficult to enjoy your life.

Two points in the book led me to drop the review to 3 stars.

First, the authors report that many boomers hope to turn to teaching as a second career. They write (p. 153): "You're probably more likely to get a job as a greeter at Wal-Mart than you are to get a great job as a teacher...a bitter pill for many."

My jaw dropped. I'm not sure what we're supposed to do with this insight. I would ask, "Why get a job at all? Why not start a business on the Internet or become a cat sitter?"

Second, the authors toe the party line on medical care. See your doctor, they urge, and get all the usual tests. While I suspect most doctors would agree with this advice, I've reviewed books suggesting alternative opinions. But what stopped me cold was the notion that we are the "lucky beneficiaries of an immense pharmaceutical output intended to provide symptomatic relief for our decrepitude" (p. 99). Unless I missed something, they seem to be serious. Rather than take a pill to deal with symptoms, I would rather find out the underlying cause, which might require lifestyle changes rather than drugs.

Hourglass Solution includes some portions of text, with sidebars featuring dialogue between the two authors. The book also quotes from boomers they interviewed. As a result, the book comes across as a collection of eclectic ideas - like a series of brief conversations you'd hold at a party of networking event.

Ultimately, the book is well designed and entertaining to read. It might work as a conversation starter for a group discussing boomer challenges. For myself, I would have hoped for a stronger focus and clearer message.

A Book For All Boomers!
By W.H. McDonald Jr.
Authors Jeff johnson and Paula Forman have continued the progress of advising and chronicling the times and trials of the Boomer Generation. In their timely book, "The Hourglass Solution: A Boomer's Guide to the Rest of Your Life" they have managed to touch on many facets of modern day life and the perils and pitfalls that have befallen this generation as they age.

I believe this book can be even more of a help to younger generations. Much wisdom could be gleamed from what some "Boomers" did, or did not do, to help their own situations now in these economical times. This is a smart and practical guide - even if reading it for some "Boomers" may become a painful refection of some of their own bad choices they have already made - and the realization that there are continually less good choices that they can still make that will impact them in the future.

The book is written well, and keeps the reader engaged. I liked the format with the "conversations" between the authors. I think that enhances the presentation of the facts and ideas. I found this book reminding me of a long ago written book called "Passages" in a positive and supportive way. I think this would be a thoughtful gift for anyone with "Boomer" parents, or friends, or for themselves. There is something of value here for all readers even much younger ones.

Right for right now and beyond
By Leon Graham
When I started reading "Hourglass Solution" (after a friend recommended it)I expected a dry discourse on what I should have done when younger and what it's too late to do now. Not so: this is a book for 40's and 50's and 60's and even beyond. The authors recount situations faced by "boomers" around the country (from personal interviews) and offer comments and insights in a lively, even charming author-to-author dialog. They don't often give answers; rather they nudge the reader to find answers on his/her own. I was particularly taken with sections on the "baggage"--real and emotional-- we carry into middle and later years. What a relief to let some/all of that go they suggest.

Flawed but sufficient
By Alexi
I read through this entire book in preparation for the chemistry SAT II. The book was relatively easy to read and understand. Yet, I do remember finding numerous mistakes in the answer key. Besides that, it did it's job - on the SAT II, I finished with 20 minutes left to check answers.. and got an 800.

Get it early and use it as a supplement
By RAfflo
This book is fine as a supplement, but by itself is impossible to understand. It was so frustrating to read because it didn't explain things well at all, and there were a lot of distracting typos and inconsistencies. I'm a good student and a great test taker (I got a 770 on the math level I test, an 800 on math level II, and a 750 on the US history), but I got a 480 on this one. I'm pretty disappointed.

Excellent preparation for SAT II chemistry.
By Xusheng Zhao
Very in-depth and covered everything you need to know about the SAT II chemistry. If you are not in AP Chemistry when you are taking the SAT II chemistry, then this book is a must because it is by far the most in-depth. Generally speaking, Barron's is the best for self-study because it is so in-depth.

Heaven's Lessons: Ten Things I Learned About God When I Died, by Steve Sjogren

“If you’d asked me who God is on December 9, the year of my accident, I would have been able to give you a fairly cohesive but theoretical answer. A day later all of that changed.”

A simple surgery went horribly wrong. Steve Sjogren died on the operating table. He encountered a heavenly world where he felt infinite peace. And then he had to come back—back to a physical reality filled with pain and disability and an endless line of tests.

The drama of dying suddenly paled in comparison to the trauma of living. Sjogren could not face this new existence with his same old comfortable understanding of God.

“I had minimized God,” Sjogren says. “Somehow, over time, he had become fairly predictable—like he could be outlined, fully grasped, and contained in a neat set of mere ideas. Now I saw that he apparently wasn’t all that impressed with my cool little notebooks.”

One day in heaven followed by hundreds in agony forged a deeper and stronger faith than Sjogren could have crafted on his own. In Heaven’s Lessons, Sjogren shares his experiences and the life-changing ways they have affected his perspective on success, suffering, and the mysteries of God.

A brush with death leads to a renewed life.
By Randy Bohlender
Many books promise to tell the whole story, but few tell the true story.

Steve Sjogren suffered a terrible medical accident that left him dead on the operating table for a significant amount of time. During that time and the recovery that ensued, life turned upside down for the author.

Heaven's Lessons by Steve Sjogren is many things - easy to read, insightful, fascinating - but above all it is refreshingly honest. Most writers will do everything they can to show you their best side when telling their own story. Sjogren tells a balanced story in which the things he was most committed to changing involved his own heart and life.

A book that honest must be read. Highly recommended. Entertaining, easy to read and challenging to think about.

Yes We Live In A Spiritual World
By Denise M. DiFalco
Author Steve Sjogren's HEAVEN'S LESSONS- Ten Lessons I Learnt About God When I Died is a fascinating read. Rarely do I read a book twice, let alone twice in a row but Sjogren's journey was so exciting I just had to reread to ensure not missing one thing. I thank Booksneeze for the ability to read his story in exchange for my thoughts. This book will convince the reader that miracles were not done away with years ago and that God still speaks to his people today. He is a real God wanting to get closer to his children. Imagine going into the hospital for a very simple procedure like having your gall bladder removed only to find out you don't have a gall bladder. The surgeons accidently cut into a main artery which leaks blood into the back of Steve's body and it's nearly an hour later before they discover their error. By now Sjogren is flat-lining. Having coded for close to seven minutes can cause enormous damage to the body. Although Steve suffers with some necrosis he is protected by major difficulties because of the Grace of God. The Book describes in depth the glory of Heaven that he witnessed and the meeting with Angels. Not to take from the author's testimony, it is up to you to read. There is shocking revelations about Bob Dylan and Robert (Bob) Kardashian who was an Elder in the church at one time. Yes, Kim's dad. I found great comfort and joy in this book and hope that everyone gets a chance to read it. Don't shortchange yourself!

Heaven's Lessons: Ten Things I Learned About God When I Died
By Kennedy
By Steve Sjogren (Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2013)

Lying down on the operating table for what was to be a routine gallbladder removal surgery, the author's long, question-provoking, and mysterious journey began. Engaging words strung along the lines of the pages tell a captivating and life-changing story that the reader will not soon forget.

As the tale unravels with each clenching sentence, insightful beacons are shed into the author's life and out of the pages of the book, available for the reader to apply into his or her own life. "The overriding truth we must focus on mentally and hide in our hearts is this: God is at work doing something great with you right in the midst of struggles," (Sjogren, 2013, p. 75). The beautiful melodic alterations that occurred in the author's life in the midst of his struggles present waves of fresh hope, carefully packaged for the recipient, the reader.

This book is no ordinary memoir, for the author boldly inspires the reader to step up and take heed to the knowledge he gained from his traumatic and blessed experiences of having died and come back to life. Bound in a dark blue paperback with cloud designs encircling the title on the front cover, this book is one that will transform your perceptions about God, life, and the afterlife, and would make an excellent addition to your personal library and a great gift idea.

Grant: A Novel, by Max Byrd

Max Byrd, the renowned author of Jackson and Jefferson, brings history to life in this stunning novel set in America’s Gilded Age. Grant is an unforgettable portrait of a colorful era—and the flawed, iron-willed, mysterious giant at its center.

Ulysses S. Grant pursued a tragic war to its very end. But his final battle starts in 1880, when he loses his race to become the first U.S. President to serve three terms, goes bankrupt, and begins a fight against cancer that will prove to be his greatest challenge. Through journalist Nicholas Trist, readers follow Grant’s journey—and along the way meet Grant’s sworn enemy Henry Adams and Adams’s doomed wife, Clover, the old soldiers Sherman and Sheridan, and the always clever, always scheming Mark Twain. Revealed here are not only the penetrating secrets of our eighteenth president, but the intimate power-brokering that led to the end of Grant’s career, setting the stage for a new era in American history—one defined by politics, not warfare.

Amazon.com Review
Devotees of the historical novel will find much to admire in Max Byrd's tightly written and consistently entertaining glance backward at General U.S. Grant's failed attempt to win a third presidential term. In life, Grant was an inscrutable character. He spoke little, wrote little, remained faithful to his wife, and seems to have devoted all the extravagance in his nature to alcohol. He had been an indifferent student at West Point and a conscientious but undistinguished young officer. The years just before the Civil War were the lowest for him--all his business enterprises had soured. Grant had the opposite of the Midas touch: everything he put his hands on turned to mud, and his chronic drunkenness had led to his forced retirement from the army.

In short, in 1860 no one would have predicted that Ulysses S. Grant would become "the most famous man in the world," as one of the many incidental characters in Grant describes him. Shyness and a gift for profound silences began to work to his benefit later, during his political career. In a rare glimpse into his subject's inner world, Byrd follows the general's meandering train of thought as his advisors plot his third presidential campaign. Outwardly, he was sure, nobody could have told that his mind was elsewhere, lazily turning over thoughts, memories, making similes. His mental process, he believed, resembled an old Missouri farmer digging at a stump, slowly prying it up from the dirt, excavating his idea.... He knew he seemed silent, impassive; he knew other people mistook that for strength. It is a mark of the General's elusiveness that Byrd chooses not Grant himself but two reporters as his main characters. Sylvanus Cadwallader is a seasoned and cynical Chicago news hound. Much of what we learn comes from his no-holds-barred biography of the great commander, marked "not for publication" on the cover. His fellow journalist, a younger man named Nicholas Trist, was injured at Cold Harbor during the war, losing an arm to Grant's insistence on pushing through the rebel lines at any cost. Trist takes the opportunity of Grant's renewed presidential ambitions to return to Washington from Paris as a foreign correspondent. Within a few hours of his arrival in the capital, he falls in love with Elizabeth Cameron, the wife of a senator. Days later, he is granted an interview with Mark Twain. Soon he is acquainted with Clover and Henry Adams, and receiving the cherished confidences (for print, of course) of the general's closest advisors.

Trist's story is as interesting as Grant's, though on a smaller scale. The most vivid touches in this novel, however, are Byrd's incidental depictions of our continuity and discontinuity with the past. Although Nicholas Trist can read a sign advertising "Ivory Soap--99 and 44/100ths percent pure," he can also glance up at the wall of the Baltimore and Ohio Railway Station in Washington and see seven clocks to which travelers adjust their watches, since each railroad company operated on its own time. Byrd's sense of fun pervades the novel and recalls his distinguished antecedent, Gore Vidal. He may not offer Vidal's magisterial sweep, nor his corrosive wit, but Byrd shows a similar infectious pleasure in bringing history to life. --Regina Marler

From Publishers Weekly
The third installment in Byrd's series of political/historical novels (Jefferson; Jackson) is informative and entertaining historical fiction. Although it's touted as similar to Gore Vidal's sensational American chronicle series, Byrd's literary mentor is more like Henry James, as the book features dense prose, a mannerly plot and psychologically real characterizations. A fictional character, journalist and author Nicholas Trist, is the center of this loosely constructed churn through the politics and society of the 1880s. Trist is a one-armed and embittered veteran of Cold Harbor who has spent his years since the Civil War in self-imposed exile. Sent home to America by a French magazine to cover Ulysses S. Grant's bid for an unprecedented third term in 1879, Trist is initially bulldozed by Sen. Don Cameron, Grant's campaign manager, who vows to give the reporter access to Grant only if he'll write laudatory accounts. Elizabeth, Cameron's young and lovely wife, instantly attracts Trist's interest, and the first half of the novel is paced by their parries as the pair seek the courage to consummate their passion. A storm of Washington politics swirls in the background, and the cast of characters is fleshed out by credible portraits of Samuel Clemens, Sylvanus Cadwaller, William T. Sherman, Clover Adams and, of course, Grant himself. In the second half of the book, the action jumps ahead to the next election year and traces Grant's decline into bankruptcy and fatal disease as he frantically tries to complete his memoirs in order to save his family from penury. Trist and Elizabeth get together, but here Byrd makes a tactical mistake (the same one Vidal commits in Empire), by trying to shift the focus to Henry AdamsAwho, as a character, remains a caricature of a conceited and often cruel cynic. Byrd's research and literary knowledge are impressive, but while his re-creation of period detail, including product placement (Ivory Soap, E.C. Booze whiskey and Heinz Pickles), is excellent, there are a few anachronisms. Even so, this is a fascinating read for any serious student of period when modern politics and society were being mapped out of the smoky shadows of a devastating war. Agent, Virginia Barber. (Aug.)

From Library Journal
Ulysses S. Grant, an undistinguished president who owed his office to a nation grateful for the long-awaited victory in the Civil War, is a historical novelist's dream subject. Living during a tumultuous time and marked by both honor and humiliation, he projected an ambiguous persona. Ehrlich takes this paradoxical man for a wild ride through history. Casting Grant as the evil twin of the real Ulysses S. Grant, an upright neighbor whose identity he stole, Ehrlich hits all the factual highlights, and his inventions have a satirical, gut-busting effect. Like his earlier Big Government (LJ 9/15/98), the new novel humorously dissects the nature of political power and its odd coincidences. In contrast, Byrd's book, though slower to excite the reader, is a serious exploration of the life and times of Grant. Its strong suit is the description of key battles and postwar events through the eyes of a one-armed veteran of the war. For Byrd, the period is a vast canvas on which he limns not only the central figure of Grant but also the lives affected by his habitual fecklessness, wartime hardness, and peacetime obtuseness. Of the two books, Ehrlich's book is a winner for larger fiction collections, while military fiction collections will be enhanced by the Byrd title. A Fine Book with a Strange Twist
By Robert Rosen
A surprising and fascinating book. Author Max Byrd follows the same basic structure as in his previous historical novels Jefferson and Jackson: youngish writer with one foot in Europe and the other in America tries to penetrate the essential mystery of the title character by researching the collected and conflicting observations of well-placed contemporaries. In Grant's case of course, the essential mystery is how Sam Grant, an alcoholic and utter failure approaching 40 years of age, could become U. S. Grant, the man who took command of the oft-beaten Union Army and saved his country, becoming in the process a future two-term president and "the most famous man in the world". Our protagonist, the fictional writer Nicholas Trist, was maimed in the war under Grant's command and thus has every reason to hate his former commander. As he works through his feelings about Grant and more details of various parts of Grant's life are revealed, we draw our own conclusions as well. The events of the novel take place after Grant's military and presidential careers are concluded and concern his attempt to obtain a third term and the well-known (and here well-told) efforts of the bankrupt and dying Grant to complete his memoirs in order to provide for his family. As expected in a book of this nature various real-life personages appear throughout (e.g. Mark Twain, William Tecumseh Sherman). Unexpectedly, one of these characters emerges as the subject of the novel just as much as Grant is. In real-life, famed 19th-century historian Henry Adams expressed his contemptuous dismissal of Grant's abilities and so Adams' prominent role in the book is no surprise, especially given his irresistibly (for a writer) vexatious personality . Where the novel takes its strange turn is the role Adams' wife Marion Hooper Adams (or his"doomed wife Clover" as the jacket blurb would have it) plays. Though hating her husband, Trist becomes friends with the witty, talented, unattractive, and unappreciated Clover and it is their conversations which become the most moving part of the book. I believe the author came to find Mrs. Adams' sad story even more interesting than Grant's and so powerful is Byrd's writing in these passages that I did as well. The book gains strength as we watch and she watches her own life slowly unravel. The most unusual thing of all is that her story and Grant's story are for the most part unconnected and the Trist character in effect shuttles back and forth between Grant's and Clover's lives. Since the novel is called Grant I was very curious to see how Byrd would in the end link the two stories. He does so masterfully but almost imperceptibly, in one seemingly off-hand comment Clover makes near the end of the book, contrasting Grant's actions in his final days to an act of her husband who was motivated by something quite different. I most strongly recommend this wonderfully written book to anyone who enjoyed Byrd's previous books. I hesitate to recommend this to anyone looking for a historical novel in a military vein such as Michael and Jeffrey Shaara's Civil War novels. The book contains no battle reconstructions and Grant's strategic and tactical decisions are only discussed cursorily in the larger context of his character. Anyone who likes Gore Vidal's historical novels should like this book and I suspect Byrd is very familiar with those novels as well.

A Novel Centered on the Last Five Years of Grant's Life
By H. Lee Dixon
A historical fiction about Grant beginning in the fall of 1879 and ending with his death in 1885. It begins when the Country and specifically the Republican party is looking for a Presidential candidate. Grant is not actively campaigned for the nomination which, if elected, would make him President for a third term. The author, Max Byrd, uses an interesting technique of describing Grant's persona by telling stories, some well known and some not, about people who touched his life. Some of the people are friends and some frankly, are enemies. Byrd uses a fictitious newspaper reporter as the forcing function to tie the many stories together into an enjoyable and informative novel. Somewhat distracting for me was his technique of hyphenation--that carry substantial and granted informative amplification but in some cases goes on for several lines--to make his point. I enjoyed very much the detailed pictures that Byrd paints of the life and times of Washington D.C. The Republican convention was held in Chicago in 1880. Byrd does a nice job of describing the activities of that gathering where Grant had over 300 votes, but insufficient for nomination. Garfield was continuing to advocate John Sherman and then on the thirty-sixth vote the convention rolled-over and nominated Garfield himself. While the words, or course, are Byrd's creation, most of the characters are real. I found it interesting to take the book and walk around the area near Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C. and see the houses where Grant and the other characters came and went. Many interesting facts...for example, I was surprised to learn that Mark Twain convinced Grant to let the publisher that he owned publish the Memoirs of Grant. Twain paid him in advance because Grant's investment partner, Ward, had embezzled all their money. Byrd also has written similar fictionalized novels about Jefferson and Andrew Jackson. I plan to read both of those as well.

Rembrandt with a pen
By desefinado
This book is a terrific evocation of an era, largely ignored in American history. By painting the shadows around Grant, I thought Byrd gave us "The Gilded Age" replete with the co-author (Twain) himself. Byrd has a rare gift for historical portraiture and wonderful storytelling. For those looking for more biographical facts on Grants life, see Jean Smith's excellent one volume biography.

Two Generals, by Scott Chantler

A beautifully illustrated and poignant graphic memoir that tells the story of World War II from an Everyman's perspective.

In March of 1943, Scott Chantler's grandfather, Law Chantler, shipped out across the Atlantic for active service with the Highland Light Infantry of Canada, along with his best friend, Jack, a fellow officer. Not long afterward, they would find themselves making a rocky crossing of the English Channel, about to take part in one of the most pivotal and treacherous military operations of World War II: the Allied invasion of Normandy. Two Generals tells the story of what happened there through the eyes of these two young men -- not the celebrated military commanders or politicians we often hear about, but everyday heroes who risked their lives for the Allied cause. Meticulously researched and gorgeously illustrated, Two Generals is a harrowing story of battle and a touching story of friendship -- and a vital and vibrant record of unsung heroism.

Two Thumbs Up for Two Generals
By Patrick_Adams
My wife bought me a copy of the World War 2 graphic novel "Two Generals" for Christmas, the story of two Canadian officers who take part in the battle for Normandy following the D-Day landings. For half an hour I was oblivious to the screams and shouts of my two kids as I read this book, choking back the tears. I had no family at Normandy and am not prone to emotional outbursts so I can only conclude that this is simply an excellent story, heart-breakingly well told.

My wife was cross with me for leaving her to look after two screaming children, so I just passed the book to her and watched her react in the same way that I had.

The author's impressive research is noticeable on every page. The front cover for example shows St Giles Church, Stokes Poges, with the ivy and bushes as they were in the 1940s not as they are now. It stands up well to a re-read, with subtleties noticed that I missed the first time.

If Herge had written for adults, he would have come up with something like this!

A moving story, beautifully drawn and artfully told
By GraphicNovelReporter.com
War stories are complicated and difficult to tell, which makes comics the perfect medium for telling them: The creator can show not only the characters and their actions but also their surroundings, the details of military life, maps of battles and strategy, and the carnage that comes with war, all without breaking the narrative with blocks of description. Scott Chantler uses the medium to its fullest in an unusual sort of war story: His grandfather's experiences in the D-Day invasion as a lieutenant in the Canadian Highland Light Infantry. The story is drawn largely from the diary of Chantler's grandfather, Law Chantler, and the letters of his best friend, Jack Chrysler. In keeping with the source material, the book itself is designed to look like a diary, complete with elastic-loop bookmark.

The book is divided into two parts. The first is mostly taken up with the period before the invasion, when Law Chantler and Jack Chrysler were going through training in England. This part of the book is mostly light-hearted, chronicling the two men's experiences in a new country and the trials they face in their training, but there a few moments that foreshadow what is to come, as when Chantler and Chrysler witness a bus accident in which a woman is killed. As the day draws near, the unit begins training with live ammunition (which means real casualties), and they are issued collapsible bicycles for use in the invasion. Important dignitaries, including the King of England, come to wish them well, and then--after a false start--they board ships and learn that they are indeed going to be part of the invasion of Normandy.

Part Two is the story of the invasion itself. Chantler's unit hits the beach but then stalls and can move no further. The Canadians were up against one of the elite units of the German army, commanded by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel himself, and they were both outnumbered and outgunned. There are periods of waiting--even a few more light-hearted moments, as when Chantler captures a German soldier who is relieving himself in the woods--before the story culminates in a final, bloody assault on the town of Buron, which was key to the capture of Caen. Here the palette shifts from gray-green to red as the characters engage in hand-to-hand combat and press forward even as their comrades and commanders are killed on either side of them. After all that, though, the book ends on a quiet note, with Law Chantler standing quietly among the scattered bodies, his mind in another time and place.

The art and storytelling in this book are nothing short of superb. Scott Chantler has a clear, crisp style that suits this type of story well. He uses muted colors in a thoughtful way--gray-green for most of the story, red to accent a moment of blood or violence and, later, as the dominant color in the battle scenes. This is never overdone, and in fact the art has a coolness to it that makes the sometimes disturbing subject matter easy to take. We are, after all, looking at this story from a distance.

Chantler composes his pages carefully, starting with a nine-panel grid but often breaking it to introduce horizontal and vertical shapes. The small panels mean we are often looking at the story in a series of small details--a face, an object, a gesture--and sometimes objects or shapes mirror those on the opposite page. When he widens the view, as he does for a two-page spread of the ships on D-Day, the effect is truly stunning.

The book winds up with a description of the significance of the battle of Buron and some more personal reflections. This is a war story that never glamorizes war; Chantler not only shows the injuries men receive on the battlefield, he hints at the longer-lasting consequences for those who survive, and there is a profound personal loss at the heart of it. Two Generals is a moving story, beautifully drawn and artfully told, and all the more important because it is true.

Chantler has posted some of his research and the original photos and documents he drew on to create Two Generals at the Two Generals Research Blog.

A Genuinely Moving Historial Account
By Jamie S. Rich
Very few comics have made me cry. This is one of them. The last handful of pages are masterful, as Scott Chantler reframes a scene we've visited several times before in the book, giving it new resonance and tying the whole narrative together in a way that packs real power. It's a brilliant example of thoughtful storytelling, emotional without being manipulative. But then, there isn't a pen stroke in this comic that isn't perfectly planned. TWO GENERALS should be given to all prospective cartoonists as a tutorial on how to visually tell tales. Adhering to a strict layout based on a nine-panel grid, Chantler frequently relies on silence and small details to relate change, movement, and outward expression of inner thought and feeling. His pin-point eyes tell more about a character's internal conflict than most other comics artists manage when rendering a complete face. Also, his sparse use of color avoids gimmickry and instead conveys an added layer of meaning. The portentous use of the dark wine color that also adorns the cover of this handsomely designed graphic novel alerts us to deaths to come, like a more serious employment of the Star Trek red shirt. Except here, under the grim specter of war, any man is as expendable as any other.

TWO GENERALS is based in large part on the diaries of the author's grandfather, a lieutenant in the Canadian army in World War II. Chantler's approach is, in some ways, "just the facts, ma'am," avoiding mawkish sentimentality; yet, he is not scared of nostalgia, humor, or genuine human connection. The comic also manages to honor the brave fighters without cheerleading or propaganda, in much the same way another visual medium, television, payed tribute to the soldiers in the miniseries BAND OF BROTHERS and THE PACIFIC. I'm considering putting TWO GENERALS on the same shelf as those DVD sets, even if it would fly in the face of my compulsive filing system. Someone get this novel in the hands of Tom Hanks, stat.

Tokyo On Foot: Travels in the City's Most Colorful Neighborhoods, by Florent Chavouet

This prize-winning book is both an illustrated tour of a Tokyo rarely seen in Japan travel guides and an artist's warm, funny, visually rich, and always entertaining graphic memoir.

Florent Chavouet, a young graphic artist, spent six months exploring Tokyo while his girlfriend interned at a company there. Each day he would set forth with a pouch full of color pencils and a sketchpad, and visit different neighborhoods. This stunning book records the city that he got to know during his adventures. It isn't the Tokyo of packaged tours and glossy guidebooks, but a grittier, vibrant place, full of ordinary people going about their daily lives and the scenes and activities that unfold on the streets of a bustling metropolis.

Here you find business men and women, hipsters, students, grandmothers, shopkeepers, policemen, and other urban types and tribes in all manner of dress and hairstyles. A temple nestles among skyscrapers; the corner grocery anchors a diverse assortment of dwellings, cafes, and shops—often tangled in electric lines.

The artist mixes styles and tags his pictures with wry comments and observations. Realistically rendered advertisements or posters of pop stars contrast with cartoon sketches of iconic objects or droll vignettes.

Review
"…hand-drawn maps…provide information about the various neighborhoods in the city — hence; it can prove to be very helpful for your trip planning." —I Am Aileen blog

"This stunning book records the city that [Florent Chavouet] got to know during his adventures, a gritty, vibrant place, full of ordinary people going about their daily lives. Realistically rendered city views or posters of pop stars contrast with cartoon sketches of iconic objects or droll vignettes…With wit, a playful sense of humor, and the colored pencils of his kit, Chavouet sets aside the question of urban ugliness or beauty and captures the Japanese essence of a great city." —Japan Today

"His drawings are so wonderfully idiosyncratic and so beautifully detailed that what must have been a labor of love for him is no less a labor of delightful artistic genius." —Publishers Weekly starred review

"[Tokyo on Foot] will make readers with wanderlust wish to drop their everyday responsibilities and trek through a foreign city. It will appeal to the armchair traveler who yearns for a bit of the exotic, the wanderer who wants to someday visit the Land of the Rising Sun, and, indeed, anyone who appreciates the marriage of grit and beauty, self-deprecating wit, and losing oneself in good pictures for a while." —ForeWord Reviews

"From what Chavouet saw, did, ate—bugs, festivals, storefronts, a fake French mansion, random drinks and snacks—his illustrations catch perfect little details you'll never find in any guide book. His myriad of people caught in the midst of their everyday lives are undoubtedly the book's highlight. […] By the time he's back in his native France, he's got an award-winning, fascinating book that surely makes for ideal reading for both armchair tourists and peripatetic travelers alike." —Book Dragon (Smithsonian Institute)

"The book captures the feel and spirit of the Japanese metropolis in comical sketches, sparse writings and whimsical, hand-drawn city maps. The book is a diary of Chavouet's six months in Tokyo. And, it's worth the money, at least for people who can appreciate Chavouet's observations on life in Japan and who can enjoy his artwork, which is intriguing, if somewhat reminiscent of classic Mad Magazine drawings. Chavouet depicts the everyday sights of Tokyo—much of which are universal sights in homogeneous Japan—in a way that's so detailed that you feel as if you can walk into the pages. It's almost like the feeling you get when you see one of those picture-perfect towns made of Legos. "—About.com

"…as for Chavouet—colorful, farcical, artistically superior Chavouet—his way of seeing Japan is insightful and entertaining for over two hundred pages. The execution is confident—a positive side-effect of it having no agenda but to represent his individual experience." —Axiom Magazine

"This is the first book by Mr. Chavouet in which he chronicled his adventures in Japan with his gorgeous hand-drawn pictures and in writing. […] This book can be enjoyed by anyone who is interested in Japan, especially Tokyo. As well as those who like quality drawings of people in their daily lives." —Tokyo Five blog

[[VIDEOID:mo2DGPA6SCDP8YK]]This isn't the usual travel guide book that tells you where to go, it's one that Florent Chavouet drew to show you where he went. He's a French guy who's in Japan to accompany his girlfriend because she's working there.

It's a 208-page paperback filled with colour pencil drawn observations on the places he went. There are interesting notes on the people and culture and his many little adventures.

His beautiful colour pencil illustrations give Tokyo a very different look and feel. It's a light-hearted look at Tokyo as a tourist. I don't know if Tokyo is this colourful, but in the book it is.

The hand drawn maps are nicely drawn with icons and places of interest. On some pages, there are collages from things he collect, like cutout of manga panels and the bicycle parking tickets he got for parking in restricted areas.

It's an amusing book to check out.

Kindle Version is not really an e-book; the paperback is fantastic

I wish I could write two reviews - one for the Kindle version and one for the hard copy.

I initially purchased the kindle version of the book, and right off the bat I had difficulty reading it. This isn't really an e-book where you can control the size of the text to make words more legible. The kindle version is simply scanned images of the book's pages that have been sequenced together.

The scans themselves are small - the "native" scan size occupies half my iPad screen. So in order to read just about everything other than the intro (which is in a typewriter-style font), you have to pinch and zoom. Unfortunately, when you zoom in, you discover that the resolution of the scanned page is not very high, and therefore the text is pixilated. The text/notes within the sketches are hand-written (in some cases, cursive),and therefore the notes are quite difficult to read (and in a of couple cases for me, impossible to read. I don't understand why the scan resolution is so low - the hard copy is larger than the screen of my iPad.

In addition, since you need to zoom in, reading through the book is cumbersome: Zoom in, swipe page around the screen to see everything, zoom out, then move to the next page.

So I returned the kindle version and ordered a hard copy. As always, Amazon was outstanding with handling this.

The hard copy is FANTASTIC - I would give it five stars. It is something I would bring back from Japan as a souvenir if I found it in a Tokyo bookstore.

But I have to give the kindle version a one-star rating because of the low scan resolution and the cumbersome nature of reading the book.

Wonderful!

I am an American that has lived in Tokyo for over 25 years now. And I have to say that I think this is possibly one of the best books ever written about my favourite city! Whether you are a wide-eyed tourist visiting for the first-time or a long term resident, you will be able to find in this book many of the things that make us all wonder at this city of contradictions. Indescribable, this book is part travel-log/part picture-book, and all fun. This is NOT a guidebook, but for the person who loves to just get lost in a city, it could be a wonderful guide. In any case, if you have ever been to Tokyo or desire to go, this is one book to have. Clever, funny, cute, and meaningful, I can't recommend Chavouet's first book enough! Bravo! Fantastic!!!
