Good introduction

I'm no Nietzsche scholar, but I found this book to be remarkably helpful. I came to it looking for a concise introduction to Nietzsche and his work, and that's precisely what I got. Wicks' approach is roughly chronological, but this is not a biography. He takes the major themes of Nietzsche's thought and follows their development from the abandonment of God through to the embracing of "life" or "existence" (similar notions for Nietzsche, but as Wicks points out they are quite different things). Wicks is very good at exploring the influences on Nietzsche's thought, at situating it in nineteenth-century Europe, and at making fine conceptual distinctions. Refreshingly, he doesn't shy away from Nietzsche's many contradictions. Rather, he acknowledges them and then gives them a generous reading. This is helpful for students, as it allows them to see one possible conclusion but recognises that there may be others. All of Nietzsche's major concepts are explored - the will-to-power, slave morality, the ubermensch - but Wicks smoothly contextualises them so the reader comes to understand them as nuanced evolutions in Nietzsche's thought, and not just notions that can be transplanted into other traditions. Speaking of which, Wicks includes a very insightful chapter on the enduring influence of Nietzsche's work, especially its misunderstood connection with Nazism. As Wicks points out, Hitler clearly admired Nietzsche's idea of the "superman" and there is an unmistakably Nietzschean echo in Hitler's overblown rhetoric and "us vs. them" mentality. But these connections are superficial, and actually shared by many schools of social thought. Nietzsche was no Nazi. He was more often anti-German and anti-nationalist, and would probably have diagnosed Nazism as a violently defensive expression of weak and sickly society. The connection with Nazism is more the fault of Nietzsche's sister who ingratiated herself with European fascists in an attempt to extend the influence of her late brother's work. Wicks caps it all with a helpful glossary of key Nietzschean concepts and terms, detailed footnotes, a thorough index, and a categorized bibliography. The only things missing are a chronology/timeline of Nietzsche's life and publications, and a short statement on the major themes of each.

An ideal introductionary text

This is an excellent text for those who know very little about Nietzsche's philosophy and who want to find out if he is interesting at all. My academic background if from biological psychology, so I knew little about Nietzsche and philosophy in general before reading this text. This book is short ( about 180 pages) and with only 7 chapters. I think this is a good thing. One can pretty quickly get prepared to read the Niezsche's own works witout spending a long time reading secondary literature. Wicks clearly explains central topics and concepts of Nietzsche without neither trying to impress with complicated words and sentences nor insulting the reader's intelligence. Many introductionary texts about Nietzsche spend too many pages talking about OTHER philosophers (specially Schopenhauer and Kant), and one ends up thinking "well, this is all interesting, but I thought the book was about Nietzsche". This book avoids this fallacy. Wicks only briefly writes about other philosophers and only when this is necessary for understanding Nietzsche, so one doesn't end up completely demotivated. Wicks finishes off with a chapter about the destiny of Nietzsche's philosophy through the century following his death. The author's suggestion for further reading is also useful.

Nietzsche- sometimes nutty, but always fascinating and provocative.

Never took a course which treated Nietzsche's work, but I read a little philosophy in desultory fashion. This short book is far more understandable than the usual, and the points of view are so iconoclastic and well-argued that I enjoy it thoroughly.
I was surprised to find the existential side of Nietzsche - previously I had thought his "God is dead" ideas were all just pessimism.

About the Author
Vance Martin is Professor of Econometrics at the University of Melbourne, Australia, a position he has held since 2000. He graduated with a PhD from Monash University in 1990. He was appointed Lecturer at the University of Melbourne in 1985 and became a Senior Lecturer in 1990.

Stan Hurn is Professor of Economics and Finance at Queensland University of Technology, Australia, a position he has held since 1998. He graduated with a DPhil in Economics from St Edmund Hall, Oxford, in 1992. He was appointed Lecturer at the University of Glasgow in 1988 and became a Senior Lecturer in 1993 before being named Official Fellow in Economics at Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1996.

David Harris is Professor of Econometrics at Monash University, Australia. He was awarded his PhD in Econometrics from Monash University in 1995. He was lecturer in econometrics from 1995 to 1997 at Monash University and from 1998 to 2010 at the University of Melbourne.

All About Italian Wines

My daughter wanted an Italian Wine Tour for her 50th birthday. I Googled Italian Wine Tour and found a half-dozen that would cost between $4,500 to $6,500 per person for 8-day tours, no airfare included. I bought the Bastianich book and dove in to the vast wine world of Italy. I was able to narrow down the size of 35 major wine growing regions, including more than 3,000 grape varietals, four levels of grading and centered on one grape - Sagiovese - in 3 zones of Tuscany: chianti clasico, brunello, and vino nobile. Our 8-day wine tour cost $1,250 per person, not counting airfare, and we enjoyed 3 ***Michelin ristorantes. If you want to get serious about Italian wines, this is your book.

Coal Use Relieves Negative Feedbacks

Apparently written to bring his work and thought before a broad public, this book is a concise and interesting summary of a large body of work and thought from this distinguished economic and demographic historian. The use of coal in industrializing Britain is core of this book. The importance of coal use in the Industrial Revolution is known well and has been commented upon by virtually every historian or economist who has dealt with this topic. Wrigley has a novel and interesting view of this crucial phenomenon. Wrigley contrasts the limited growth potential of an "organic" economy where productivity will be eventually constrained by negative feedbacks due to the limited resource of wood as an energy source with an "inorganic" economy where this energy bottleneck is absent.

In contrast to many other scholars who have focused on how the Industrial Revolution started, Wrigley examines why it didn't sputter out. Wrigley covers a number of interesting aspects of this concept. He points out the significant growth potential of pre-industrial, "Smithian", capitalist growth and discusses interesting ways in which this occurred in England. There are nice dicussions of improvements in agricultural productivity, urbanization, the velocity and volume of trade, and rising consumer demand. All of these interacted in interesting ways to enhance economic growth. But, negative feedbacks due to limited land and limited wood production would eventually have curtailed many of the processes. The employment of coal, both for domestic heating and industrial production, prevented these negative feedbacks from operating. His counter-example is the 17th century Netherlands, where considerable economic modernization occurred but ultimately stagnated.

Simultaneously, coal use stimulated some positive feedbacks of its own. Increasing use of and demand for coal, for example, stimulated improvements in transportation and provided considerable impetus for the development of the great technological innnovation of steam power.

This short book contains quite a bit of interesting analysis. There is good discussion of the relatively long prelude to the Industrial Revolution, English demography, the pessimism of classic economists like Smith and Ricardo, and quite a few other topics.

Magisterial

When people use the term "magisterial", this is the kind of book they mean. It is an education in how to use data and statistical analysis to evaluate a variety of simultaneously shifting social dynamics. But what makes this book important is not the rethinking of the Industrial Revolution it provokes, but the profound question it forces on the reader about whether it is possible for a society like ours to live "organically" again in the aftermath of the fossil fuel explosion this book narrates. I came away from reading this book more pessimistic about our prospects than from 50 books I have read on climate change, etc.

This is an incredibly eloquent and well organized view of the demographic changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution in the United Kingdom. In many ways it is the "missing link" that economists - who hand-wave shamelessly about the demographic transition - need to read. As do environmental and climate scientists who are concerned about energy and climate change.

A masterly piece of scholarship that needs to be read by a broader scientific audience.

Excellent Resource for those Just Starting Out

I have several of Sue Weaver's books, and I have grown to trust her on most subjects pertaining to animal care. This is another example of her work, which I have always found to be clearly and simply written, factual, and nicely toned (there are few things more offensive than reading a 'how to' guide in which the author clearly feels his audience is beneath him; Ms. Weaver, as always, comes across in a friendly and instructive manner without being condescending)

This book is split into two sections: Raising Miniature Livestock and The Species. Each section is then divided into chapters. The first second is, as it is aptly titled, about raising minis. The chapters in the first section are as follows:

1 Before You Begin (basically about whether you are really ready and able to have livestock, mini or otherwise)

2 Which Species? (the title is self-evident, but, basically, the chapter compares the different miniatures available, and helps you choose which you are interested in learning more about--Section 2 of the book covers the individual species more throughly)

3 Getting Started: Education, Vets, and Where to Buy (information everyone needs to consider in preperation for any animal)

4 Selecting Miniature Livestock (This chapter helps you learn what to look for as far as healthy minis go. It also delves into the genetic issue of Dwarfism.)

5 Livestock Guardians

6 Facilities and Fences (goes over what kind of housing your livestock will need)

7 Feeding ( I did not realize before I picked up this book that miniature goats, sheep, and the rest of them have different food needs than their full-sized cousins (other than the obvious difference in porportion). But Ms. Weaver explains the different needs that Minis have)

8 Health (a very, very basic primer on healthcare, things you must know, such as worming and taking care of wounds)

9 Identification (about permanent/temporary tagging)

10 Transportation (helps you get your stock from point A to B with minimal stress and danger to all concerned)

11 Breeding (basically, how to get baby minis and a little on how to care for baby)

12 Got Milk? (fairly self-evident, but a start on dairying your minis...but you'll need more than this book if you really want to get started in that)

13 The Business End (How to market your minis so they at least pay their way)

Section Two covers each of the livestock included (Mini Cattle, Horses, Donkeys, Mules, Goats, Llamas, and Sheep). This includes a section of photographs (though all the pictures are together, not spread out through the book)

I found most of the information to be reliable and fair. Sue Weaver loves most animals (especially donkeys) and you can tell when reading her work.

There is one little issue, though I do not hold this againist Ms. Weaver, as she is not the photographer, is that there is a photo of a goat in this book that is also in Storey's Guide to Livestock Breeds, and which the books each classify differently. I don't know how this came about, but since it is not the author's fault, one can hardly hold her accountable.

All in all, I suggest this book if you are new to the miniature world. Some of the information is something that someone with a little experience wouldn't need, but it is great for beginners,and even the experienced can learn something useful!

Excellent guide

If you are looking for the joy of animals with a lower feeding cost and space requirements, here is your guide. And what is cuter than a mini? This book is packed with useful and interesting information about miniature sheep, horses, donkeys, cows, goats, and pigs. You will know everything you need to about selecting, feeding, housing, vetting, and enjoying your small livestock. In addition, this book presents the sometimes harsh realities of livestock ownership and addresses the ethical issues of over-breeding and preservation of rare breeds.

For Me the book was a waste of time and money

For Me the book was a waste of time and money. For others it could be just what they wanted. The book was very general covering many farm animals but gives no more information that a basic website would about an animal. Was expecting something more specialized about miniatures.
Would suggest some books like raising beef cattle, dairy cattle, meat goats etc. which are Storey's Guide to. These will give more specifics.
General information it's Okay.

A partir de 1938, ayant rompu avec le Parti communiste, il combattra sans relache le regime stalinien, notamment a travers son roman majeur, Le Zero et l'Infini. A partir de 1940, il vit en Angleterre, ou il se suicidera avec sa femme en mars 1983. Son oeuvre de romancier, philosophe, historien et essayiste lui vaut une renommee mondiale.

...and it works as a memoir, too!

Arthur Koestler's memoir about his experiences during the beginning of the Second World War is interesting from a historical standpoint. Koestler finds himself all over Europe, in and out of internment camps, encountering people from all over of all classes. Koestler's experience is interesting because the way he was treated was not the norm, it was the product of his unique background and situation, but it still represents the wide range of possible experiences during this historically uncertain time. The level that it succeeds on most, however, is a personal one. Koestler is a damn witty, talented author, who knows how to tell a story. Despite the subject matter he finds much work with. One can't help but smile at he way he describes the inbreed locals of a small village or the way he personifies his car. As interesting as the historical and stylistic elements is his description of himself (clearly a flawed man with a drinking problem) and his unlikely relationship with a younger woman he wasn't meant to end up with. It may be a comparatively obscure piece of literature, but it's certainly one worth reading.

The France-1940 as a true image of the World-2013.

An excellent book – I can recommend it as probably the most frightful one among other honest mirrors of the XX century. No doubts, Orwell is quite frightful too, but, at least, his world is just a would-be fantasy, while "Scum of the Earth" is reality itself. And it wouldn't be that hopeless reality if it would be limited to France-1940 only (though a loathsome picture of even one ex-great nation's total final corruption is tragic enough, of course). Unfortunately, the reality-2013 is much more sinister, because the past seven decades show that the same cancer of moral degradation is eagerly devouring now all the Western world, from the USA to Australia. Koestler's quote from Maeterlinck’s "Life of the Termites" is so eloquent in showing the present-day utter luck of freedom's support (to tell nothing about the elementary human dignity's support) anywhere, be it state institutes, media, church or family bonds: "…A planter enters his house after an absence of five or six days; everything is apparently as he left it, nothing seems changed. He sits down on a chair, it collapses. He grabs the table to regain his balance, it falls to pieces under his hands. He leans against the central pillar, which gives way and brings down the roof in a cloud of dust". Exactly so – there is no more firm support around us, indeed! The termites have turned into dust all the former defenses of the free society, and (that's probably the worst thing of them all) it's we, it's we ourselves and nobody else, who permitted this overwhelming rot, generously inviting all kinds of termites for a free lunch. Mr. Koestler's book was ridiculed or silenced by termites-friends when his honest narrative of France's collapse could still be fruitfully used as a wise lesson. Now it's only the 100%-true prophecy - but, naturally, it doesn't make "Scum of the Earth" less precious even a tiny bit. The book is really magnificent! Rostislav, Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

What I said for the paperback!

ONE of the greatest books to come out of the second world war now carries a tragic irony. The reverberations of its author's suicide in 1983 spill over into one's reading of it.

In 1939, Koestler was living in the South of France working on Darkness At Noon. Moving to Paris to enlist with the Allies he was, along with thousands of others who had fought Fascism around Europe, imprisoned as an undesirable alien. Life in the camp, which German emigres testified to being comparable with Dachau, is illuminated by a writer whose humanity, optimism and intelligence shine on every page.

PreSchool-Grade 1—Little Blue Truck rides in rhyme again, this time carrying crates of lettuce to a metropolitan market. His bug-eyed headlights show appreciation for the city views, as well as discomfort when the faster-paced vehicles harass him. From a double-decker bus to the mayor's limousine, traffic irritably jams into a crunch intensified by the limo engine's demise. The portly, gray-haired mayor uses Little Blue as a podium, instructing citizens to follow the truck's advice to travel "one at a time." The resulting courtesy creates a smooth flow, even when a marching band joins the line. Everyone cheers for the little truck, who leads the way with the mayor as his passenger. McElmurry's gouache scenes are spot-on. Simple compositions in calming indigo and cream in the country starkly contrast with the jam-packed city scenes where a crush of buildings barely shows the sky. The urbanites are a rich mix of ethnicity and purpose: coffee drinkers, construction workers, dog walkers, briefcase carriers, they all pound the pavement. Just OK

I bought this book for my son as soon as it came out because we have the first Little Blue Truck book and love it. I think this one falls short. It is not half as charming as the first and really a little boring to read. After we read the first book my son was reading along with us (as best he could at 2 1/2) and doing all the animal sounds. This one he doesn't even want to pick up a 2nd time. The illustrations are still nice and the moral is OK, but overall it's about grumpy city cars and doesn't have the same cute flow as the first. I'd pass.

My son loves it!

A lot of the reviews here say the same thing: "not as good as the first book". In a sense, I agree-- the moral's not as profound and the words aren't quite as fun to read without animal sounds. That said, my son (a young toddler) adores this book. He's the sort of boy who waves at buses and trucks, loves to see heavy machinery at work, and constantly spins the wheels on his toys. Once we got this book, with its gorgeous pictures of skyscrapers (reminiscent of New York City) and different kinds of vehicles, my son literally threw the first book aside. His favorite page shows a traffic jam--go figure. In sum, my son and I like this book, but how much your child enjoys it will depend on his interests.

Not as good as the original "Little Blue Truck" Little Blue Truck Board Book but our child still really enjoys this story.
