I suppose this book is good if you're just starting out. But there's little detail and its very short.

Better off with google if you are already familiar with spring-data, JPA or Hibernate.

The church is not only the central place of Christian worship but also a place of faith-filled education. Christly Gestures reframes the very meaning of religious education, exploring what the form and content of Christian learning would look like if local churches truly saw themselves as the body of Christ. / Author Brett Webb-Mitchell begins with the writings of Paul, using them to clarify the biblical image of Christ's body as the community of believers. Taking this powerful analogy to heart, he suggests that Christian education must not only nurture the minds and spiritual lives of church members but also educate their bodies into the "Christly gestures" - performing acts of faith that imitate Jesus and embody the gospel in daily life. In the quest for a richer, more relevant understanding of Christian education, Webb-Mitchell provides meaningful answers to questions concerning the purpose, context, ways, and means of educating Christians today.

Learning and teaching with head, hands, and heart
By Amazon Customer
In Christly Gestures, Brett Webb-Mitchell moves from being an advocate for disabled persons within the church to being an advocate for a disabled church. With insight and grace, he diagnoses the disconnect between head, heart, and hands that plagues much of modern Christian education. Then, blending excellent scholarship with stories drawn from his own rich experience, Webb-Mitchell proposes an alternative (but age-old) practice of education that returns the church to its roots in relational, experiential, scriptural, and spiritually-grounded formation of mind, body, and soul. Christly Gestures gives an exciting way forward for those seeking to discover what it truly means to learn, live, and teach together as members of the body of Christ.

A recommended book about Christian education
By Lu Gan
The author first challenges today's Christian education methods, conventional Sunday school and catechetical instruction, which in his eyes have almost failed its purposes for three reasons: 1) content is irrelevant to people's real lives. 2) Students are not engaged in true dialogue and learning. 3) Individualistic pedagogy fails to embrace community learning. Church life in its entirety should be formational instead of informational. The author argues that Christians should learn to perform Christly gestures rather than simply gain historical facts and other people's theological ideas. When Christians value Christly gestures, practice them in the church community, and learn to live them out in the real life with the help of Holy Spirit, transformation happens. Christly Gestures reshapes the very meaning of Christian education, exploring what the form and content of Christian learning would look like if local churches truly saw themselves as the body of Christ.

Another point I like about his book is that it equally emphasizes on the formation of spirit, mind, and body, and contends for a deep unity of body and mind, of thought and action. In fact, as Brett discovers, the formation of human body receives the least attention in the fields of religious education and theology. The cons: this book claims to write for lay leaders and local Christian educators, but its writing style, complex theological discussion, and short of practical examples make it more suitable for students and teachers of religious institutions than for Sunday school teachers.

This is the first handbook devoted to the understanding of the nature of environments in child development. Utilizing Urie Bronfenbrenner's idea of embedded environments, this volume looks at environments from the immediate environment of the family (including fathers, siblings, grandparents and day-care personnel) to the larger environment including schools, neighborhoods, geographic regions, countries and cultures. Understanding these embedded environments and the ways in which they interact is necessary to understand development.

The Last Line of Defense: The New Fight for American Liberty, by Ken Cuccinelli

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli leads the historic fight against the unprecedented overreach of the federal government.

With Obamacare and agencies like the EPA, the FCC, and the National Labor Relations Board attempting to exercise unprecedented control over the American people, the Obama Administration was breaking federal laws, ignoring federal courts, and violating the Constitution to achieve its goals of redistributing wealth, concentrating power in Washington, and rewarding its supporters.

Without enough lawmakers in Washington devoted to protecting the rule of law to stop the federal government's liberty-stealing power grab, the battle had to be waged in an unprecedented way: from the states -- just as our Founding Fathers intended.

The man who led the charge was Ken Cuccinelli, the first state attorney general to argue in federal court against Obamacare, an unapologetic defender of the Constitution, and a man admirers and detractors alike said "was tea party long before there was a Tea Party."  The Last Line of Defense provides a behind-the-scenes account of the myriad of legal battles in which our states were the only instruments of resistance to federal abuses of power.  It is a must-read for every patriot.

Review
“Ken Cuccinelli will stand up for our freedoms….Ken is leading the fight for those of us who are frustrated and angry with the unprecedented expansion of the federal government into our private lives.”  - Mike Huckabee

"Ken has been a key leader nationally in the fight against unconstitutional overreaches of the federal government. He has been a true and consistent champion of liberty." - Rand Paul

“One of our rock star heroes and a real leader of the conservative movement – not just today, but in the future.” - Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center

"He is a man who has never turned his back on his values, has never turned his back on his beliefs, and has never refused to stand up when principle demanded him to do so." -David Keene, NRA President

"Cuccinelli will tell you to your face, repeatedly, what he is going to do and why. And then he does it — without regard to how it will affect his political career. That simple formula is behind every page of “The Last Line of Defense.”  In the eyes of the trimming, scheming and surprisingly lazy political class, this is controversial.  The rest of the world calls it honesty." - Norm Leahy

“The Last Line of Defense is a must read for conservatives, Tea Partiers, libertarians, students of government, students of law, and anyone who cares about the future of America.  Even Democrats will learn that Cuccinelli’s brand of conservatism is grounded in the most basic, thoughtful and positive American principles, their demagoguery notwithstanding.  In fact every voter and candidate for office would do well to read it.  It is the present and the future based on timeless principles.”
-Mark Fitzgibbons, American Thinker

“Cuccinelli picks fights over principle, and the lodestar guiding his actions is his belief in a strict constructionist interpretation of the Constitution of the United States.”
-James Bacon, Bacon’s Rebellion

Chapter 1

The Biggest Set of Lawbreakers in America

There is but one element of government, and that is the people . . . For a nation to be free, it is only necessary that she wills it. For a nation to be slave, it is only necessary that she wills it.

—John Adams, 1814, Founding Father and second president of the United States

In March 2010, President Barack Obama and the Democrat-controlled 111th Congress did to the American people what the tyrant we rebelled against in 1775 couldn’t even do when we were merely subjects: they declared that they suddenly had the unprecedented power to force Americans to purchase private products in the name of whatever “public good” the federal government deemed appropriate.

In March 2010, that product was private health insurance, and the mandate to buy it was the centerpiece of the new federal health care law, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also dubbed Obamacare.

But this new power Congress and the president claimed for themselves had the potential to go far beyond the ability to force Americans to purchase just health insurance. The power could be used to force them to buy cars to prop up the ailing automobile industry, to buy gym memberships and vegetables to promote healthy lifestyles, or to buy virtually anything for whatever Congress and the president declared was the public good.

By passing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) with this individual insurance mandate, Congress and the president had violated the United States Constitution, as no such power to mandate private purchases had ever been given to the federal government. Unfortunately, without enough lawmakers in Congress willing to uphold their oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States” and vote against the unconstitutional act, it became law, and it fell to people like me and my fellow state attorneys general to take the federal government to court to attempt to stop its overreach. In other words, the states had to sue the federal government to protect the U.S. Constitution and our citizens from the federal government.

Though a mandate was unconstitutional, many Americans would embrace this newfound federal power to seemingly solve yet one more of our society’s challenges: health insurance that was too expensive and out of the reach of too many people. Fortunately, the majority of Americans saw this new mandate power for what it was: a diminishing of our liberty that would be difficult to undo, and a power that could just as easily be used for not-so-altruistic purposes down the road.

This book attempts to chronicle the courtroom and the behind-the-scenes fight against one of the greatest assaults on American liberty in our lifetimes—the federal health insurance mandate. I’ll also cover other lawless acts of what I call the biggest set of lawbreakers of our lifetimes—the Obama administration. No other president, no other administration has had such a willful disregard for the law.

The administration used its temporary majority in Congress as well as executive branch agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and others to exercise control over the American people that it didn’t have the authority to exercise, and in the process, it trampled the sovereignty of the states, violated federal law, ignored federal courts, and violated the Constitution to achieve its goals of redistributing wealth, concentrating power in Washington, and rewarding its political allies.

Although I had many policy disagreements with the health care law and the other federal actions I’ll describe throughout this book, I won’t get into many policy discussions here, because that’s already been done elsewhere and because—as the attorney general of Virginia—I couldn’t sue the federal government just because I didn’t like its policies.

We Americans had seen our share of bad laws from Washington that punished achievers, harmed one class of people to advantage another, or ravaged the economy to put more power in the hands of government. But just because laws were bad policy and went against the principles of small government, that didn’t necessarily mean they were unconstitutional. For instance, I had said all along during Virginia’s lawsuit against Obamacare that if the federal health care law had been passed in a constitutional way—funded with a legal tax on citizens instead of as an unconstitutional mandate to buy a private product—I would have had no authority to sue. Fighting back on bad policy is the role of Congress and the people. If laws are onerous but constitutional, the only remedy is at the ballot box—by electing new members of Congress and a new president.

However, when the president is willing to ignore the law repeatedly or disregard the Constitution to force his radical policies on the American people and the states, state attorneys general like me are able to step up and push back in the court.

How did this fight with the federal government come about? To best answer this question, we need to refer back to the history of the United States—starting all the way back with the country’s founding.

In 1775, American colonists began to fight what initially seemed like a futile revolution to throw off the shackles of a powerful tyrant and struggle for their independence. Against the odds, they freed themselves from Great Britain and created a government of their own—one that would exist to secure and protect their newly won liberty.

The framers of the Constitution started with the premise that the government would derive its powers from the people and ultimately would answer to them. They painstakingly designed the Constitution—the document that created the federal government—to grant the government only limited powers, because they understood that a strong central government would be a constant threat to the cherished liberty they had recently won. Regrettably, in the centuries since the Constitution was adopted, we as a people have demanded that government do more to “fix” society’s problems—from poverty to high food costs to transportation issues—and to accommodate those demands, government has willingly grown beyond its original mandate.

We have ended up relying more on government and less on ourselves, our families, our churches, our friends, and our communities. With every new societal problem, enterprising politicians—backed by a cavalcade of cronies and special interests—have identified a new government program or agency to solve it. In the process, the principles of limited government have been pushed aside for what some deem “the greater good.” If the new program was unconstitutional or violated the law, well, then, they declared, that just meant the Constitution or the law wasn’t able to keep up with the times.

Few seemed to notice the cost of these solutions—not just in dollars, but in liberty. Every time we asked government to do something new, we had to transfer some of our authority to it to allow the government to carry out those solutions. Every transfer of our authority came at the expense of just a little more of our liberty. Bit by bit, our federal government gained more and more power, while the people retained less and less.

We had long forgotten Thomas Jefferson’s admonition that “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” We weren’t very vigilant, and we let people like President Obama’s former chief of staff, Rahm “you never want a serious crisis to go to waste” Emanuel, use real and perceived crises to convince people to let government grow its power at every opportunity.

Of course, President Obama wasn’t the only one who was to blame for accumulating so much power to the federal government to so thoroughly trample our liberty. That process had been a steady bipartisan march for more than the last one hundred years of American government.

The government’s growth of power over those years ultimately set the stage for 2009: Under the Obama administration, with a willing president, the government shifted from deriving its authority from the people to seizing authority from the people. The administration circumvented Congress to unilaterally change immigration law, defied a federal court order to regulate the Internet, bypassed the authority of the states to try to put the coal industry out of business, and worked with Congress to violate the Constitution to push mandatory health insurance on all its citizens.

We were finally confronting head-on the big-government leviathan President Gerald Ford had warned us about when he said, “A government big enough to give you everything you need, is a government big enough to take away everything that you have.”

This was exactly what our founders had feared. As a result of massive government growth, we had a government that existed to plan and control virtually every aspect of our lives and our economy, from energy to automobiles to banking, insurance, and health care. We had a government so large, powerful, and costly that not only was our liberty at stake, but so were our financial freedom and our very way of life.

But something remarkable also started happening in 2009 to counter all that. As our founders once did against a tyrant king, citizens and states began to push back against the federal government in an attempt to stop its out-of-control growth. As the government borrowed hundreds of billions of dollars from the Communist Chinese to bail out failed U.S. financial institutions, car companies, and American homeowners who were encouraged to buy houses they couldn’t afford, taxpayers started to get angry. And as talk of putting the American health care industry under government control became actual legislation working its way through Congress, citizens started to protest. Many organized, and the Tea Party movement—named in honor of the 1773 Boston Tea Party rebellion against the British Crown—emerged.

In February 2009, just weeks before the national Tea Party movement started to take shape, Newsweek ran an editorial by then-editor Jon Meacham titled “We Are All Socialists Now.” The editorial captured the American people’s frustration that government spending was growing at an unsustainable pace and government control of the American economy was unparalleled compared with any other time in our history. It also spoke to their frustration that it wasn’t only President Obama and a Democrat-controlled Congress that had caused it all, but that the previous Republican administration and Republican Congress—those whom they had expected to put the brakes on government expansion—had actually had their feet on the big-government accelerator, too:

In many ways our economy already resembles a European one. As boomers age and spending grows, we will become even more French. . . . The U.S. government has already—under a conservative Republican [President George W. Bush’s] administration—effectively nationalized the banking and mortgage industries [with hundreds of billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded industry bailouts]. . . .

[B]ut it was, again, under a conservative GOP administration that we enacted the largest expansion of the welfare state in 30 years: prescription drugs for the elderly . . . And it is unlikely that even the reddest of states will decline federal money for infrastructural improvements. . . .

Whether we like it or not—or even whether many people have thought much about it or not—the numbers clearly suggest that we are headed in a more European direction. A decade ago U.S. government spending was 34.3 percent of GDP, compared with 48.2 percent in the euro zone—a roughly 14-point gap, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. In 2010 U.S. spending is expected to be 39.9 percent of GDP, compared with 47.1 percent in the euro zone—a gap of less than 8 points. As entitlement spending rises over the next decade, we will become even more French.

It was this sense of America’s inevitable slide toward socialism that finally moved average citizens to organize into the Tea Party movement and become skeptical of both Republican and Democrat politicians. They started to take more of an interest in their government, educate themselves about politics, and even study the history of our Founding Fathers.

In all my years in politics, I had never seen such an interest in the Constitution and our founding principles as I saw emerge in 2009 with the Tea Party movement. I used to think I was one of only a small group of people who even read the Constitution and tried to abide by it, but it’s now commonplace to hear average citizens talk about the Constitution and limited-government principles in political discussions.

The American people had been asleep, letting their power go and their government grow. The Tea Party movement reawakened them to the fact that they could no longer take their freedom for granted. It also warned of what was to come if they didn’t do something to change course soon.

As a result, citizens started to take notice of what their elected officials were voting for. People began to study the Constitution to learn the legal limits of government authority. Protests in Washington and at congressional district offices and town halls across the country became the order of the day.

In the so-called summer of discontent in 2009, politicians were forced to start paying attention to their constituents a lot more. And the states started to realize that they weren’t wholly owned subsidiaries of U.S. Congress, Inc., ready and willing to carry out the orders of a Congress and a president whose actions were unconstitutional or contrary to the law.

It was in that tumult of 2009 that I was elected Virginia’s attorney general. While I took on the typical duties of a state attorney general, on the day I was sworn into office, like every other state and federal elected official, I also swore an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States. That’s an oath I took very seriously, even if others thought such an attitude was passé.

So when the federal government went so far as to disregard the law or overstep the bounds of its constitutional authority in such a way as to harm the Commonwealth of Virginia in the process, I had the legal authority to push back in court. And I did.

In fact, this was precisely the system that the framers of the Constitution had set up to keep the federal government in check. Just as the framers divided the power of the federal government among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches in a system of checks and balances to ensure each branch served as a watchdog over the others, so too did they divide authority for governing between the federal government and the state governments—a concept called federalism. Federalism is another level of checks and balances that allows the states to serve as a fail-safe to prevent the federal government from becoming so powerful that it becomes destructive of the very liberty it was instituted to protect. Remember “[to] secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity” in the Preamble of the Constitution?

It was in this spirit of federalism—the idea of the states standing up to the federal government when it overstepped its legal or constitutional bounds—that Virginia and eventually twenty-seven other states decided to file suit over the 2010 health care act. I’m not aware of any other time in American history when so many states were plaintiffs against the federal government, attempting to rein in its power. It was a truly historical and critical test for our constitutional republic.

A level headed book on Liberty, past and present
By Melenzan
Though he is a lawyer and a politician, Ken Cuccinelli started his professional life as a mechanical engineer and it shows. Cuccinelli communicates clearly and efficiently throughout the entire book. The presentation and content are suitable for a wide range of readers both in terms of political affiliation as well as current level of knowledge of American politics. Refreshingly, the book is not weighed down with emotional rants or much focus on personal opinions. It is really much more a historical and factual presentation on the origins of American liberty and the authors involvement in recent legal challenges. If you want to understand why Libertarians think the way they do, this book will be insightful. Though it is concise and factual, I finished the book in one day. I couldn't put it down.

I bought this book after seeing Cuccinelli give an interview on PBS. He came across as a very intelligent, very reasonable man who values finding objective truth over pushing any one particular political agenda.

Defining Liberty
By KRUIZ
Ken has given Americans an opportunity to understand how some Federal mandates are restricting his rights and the rights of millions of Americans. . .granted, it is his personal point of view but it is shared by millions. Visit the book's index and you'll see his arguments are well documented. But this book allows readers to at least understand his arguments as he shares examples and personal stories of the pain caused to many. By getting to know his point of view readers will learn that he is fighting for an American Liberty that protects a person's right to live according to their beliefs and not restricted by law. This is the same right all Americans want, regardless of their belief.

At the start of the book he introduces the concept that many states are replacing societal values with provably destructive politically correct government values. He states that he wants to make citizens aware of the threat federal overreach can pose to my and your personal and economic freedom. We need to preserve liberty by keeping civil controls separate from societal practices.

Note: If Henry VIII had simply changed a law and not simply instituted a new church so he could make a new "law" allowing divorce, many things would be different today.

For example, historically the sacrament of Marriage is a religious notion of a man and a woman. This union later became a civil action as well. If a different religion institutes a "sacrament" for same sex holy unions. . .let them call it a different name (say, "love bond") and go on their merry way without destroying the sanctity of what the God of Abraham refers to as Marriage. A civil union should be a separate act from what one religion instituted as "marriage" or another may call "love bond". Why can't "civil union" certificates be issued without interfence with our right to practice religion as we wish?

Good Reading
By Marilyn DeLuna
Too bad Ken Cuccinelli is not Governor. We lost an opportunity for another good Republican Governor. But, the book is good and informative and lets you know how the fight is continuing for our liberty and freedom.

The School and Society & The Child and the Curriculum, by John Dewey

These two short, influential books represent the earliest authoritative statement of Dewey's revolutionary emphasis on education as an experimental, child-centered process. He declares that we must make schools an embryonic community life and stresses the importance of the curriculum as a means of determining the environment of the child. 4 halftones and 4 charts.

What to teach
By Anita Ritz
Dewey, a profound contributor to the field of education, displays some of his beliefs of the best methods to teach children in The Child and the Curriculum. To begin Dewey's discussion, the child's world is examined. In this examining, a sense of how the child's world operates is formed. Children learn through the process of experiencing things, life. In this book Dewey, finds that the schools in which children are educated contradict their very learning style by nature. "The child's life is an integral, a total one," (p.183, 1902). The way the school disseminates the curriculum is not the most optimal method for students to learn.
A child's life collects all the experiences, thus the child learns. Dewey postulates a change in the formula for teaching children, the curriculum. Why change the curriculum? As Dewey states, children need to be intertwined in the process of doing. Children will learn by doing, making clothes to wear, furniture to sit on, and growing food to eat. The idea of the separate subject area is a key area Dewey analyzes because of how children learn. When a child wants to build a chair to sit on, they examine disciplines across the realm of mathematics, science, and language skills while building the chair. Instead of separating this activity into different disciplines, it is woven throughout the activity. Throughout this book, it is stated that their needs to be a link to what the child is learning and what the child sees as a benefit to themselves.
As an educator, it is important to be exposed to varying ideas as to how the school systems have functioned and are functioning today. There are ideas in this book that a pre-service or current educator should consider during their teaching career. Are Dewey's ideas relevant for today's society? I believe this is a question one has to answer for themselves, construct your own meaning.

Another Dewey classic - wait, two classics in one!
By J. Stoner
This great book contains two Dewey classics: (1) The School and Society; and, (2) The Child and the Curriculum. This text is like most Dewey works: concise and to the point. This text focuses on the effects and the power that teachers should have in affecting student lives. There is much discussion on Dewey's classic "educative" experiences and how education should be hands-on learning. Dewey also asserts that curriculum should emulate real life challenges and "occupations" of everyday life. Learning occurs in doing and not in repeating facts and figures on multiple-choice tests.

We wonder why the greatest young minds are thrown into math and science courses instead of being encouraged to explore the arts and music. This book continues to show why coursework should not be limited to multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and other methods of factoid memorization but rather coursework should include the exploration of skill-sets and also how the curriculum should provide a catalyst for knowledge and skill exploration.

Like most Dewey books, this should be required reading for all education programs and for all educators. Considered by many to be the only true American philosopher, Dewey once again provides a clear look at why education in America is sub-par in quality and effectiveness.

Also recommended: "Experience and Education," by John Dewey.

Why going to school ?
By A Customer
From a high school student's point of view, reading Dewey couldn't provide something else than hope for educational systems, most of which, despite the efforts of making a school a more living atmosphere, organizations still remain too mechanical in learning procedures and detached from social applications regarding the capabilities they serve.
Originally from Cameroon, I've had the opportunity to explore three educational systems from different cultural influence each. It was an advantage that surely opened my mind to different perspectives by interacting with different cultures in different social contexts, but especially carried me out to realize how the so called "education" - in general, but in high school in particular - shortly addresses fundamental needs as much individually as socialy, since people tend to ignore its essential functions or misunderstand the concepts it involves, precisely because their implications are so general that they shouldn't be analyzed in separated contexts, school and society, as far as they are, with respect, one a component of the other but the other being the expression of the first one in a long term.
By observing both components as a whole, Dewey proposes a model that doesn't necessarily apply to actual issues or give factual solutions, but at least redefines "education" by integrating inherent aspects to human nature in its double acception - as a group as much as an individual -, which reveals the values traditional education still mostly hides.
I delibarately took the initiative of question what high school didn't explained to me, and probably often forget to ask itself. In what ways education serves people in the aim of blooming personally and socially ? which role schools are therefore supposed to play and in which patterns ? The questions are so simple that the answers appear obvious. In fact, they should be when the problematic is carefully put. this is the reason most people can get it wrong and sometimes don't even try to question what is already established. Dewey was an excellent starting point for my research and I recommend it to EVERYONE, not especially those concerned with education because it shouldn't be a matter of a restricted segment of people. Education is everywhere. Sorry for my english :)

From Booklist
This work is an introduction to the geography of the biblical world and an extension of the maps and other geographical information found in the ESV Study Bible (Crossway, 2008). The first of four parts provides an overview of the land in which the Israelites settled and a description of the relationship between archaeology and biblical studies. The second addresses the places and events mentioned in the books of the Bible. In this part, for example, the story of the exodus of the Hebrews from Egypt is not only described but also illustrated with a map showing the traditional route scholars believe they took as well as three alternatives and photographs of Mt. Sinai, where it is traditionally located. Part 3 is a collection of maps that spans the whole of Bible history and ranges geographically from Anatolia to North Africa. Part 4 provides various appendixes and indexes, such as a time line of biblical history, a general index, a scripture index, and an index of known biblical sites. Finally, a CD-ROM accompanies the atlas, providing digital versions of the historical maps. The ESV in the title refers to the English Standard Version of the Bible. First published in 2001, it strives to be an essentially literal translation from a team committed to historic Christian orthodoxy. It would be safe to assume the conservative-Evangelical stance of that translation will also be found in the information presented in this atlas. Recommended for theological and research libraries as well as libraries with strong collections in biblical archaeology. --Christopher McConnell

Review

“A remarkably beautiful and rich resource for historical, geographical, and archaeological background material that will deepen our understanding of each section of the Bible and increase our appreciation of the Bible's amazing historical accuracy.”
—Wayne Grudem, Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies, Phoenix Seminary

“This Atlas is a wonderfully illustrated tool to aid the layperson, student of the Scripture, or pastor who wants to dig deeper and gain new insights and appreciation of the setting, context, and message of the Bible. The text is easy to follow, pictures are brilliant, and maps are incredibly useful as the reader moves through the related narratives. I highly recommend this marvelous resource.”
—James K. Hoffmeier, Professor of Old Testament & Near Eastern Archaeology, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

“During the 44 years I served as a college professor I used many good atlases. However, I have never seen one comparable to this in the breadth of material, the depth of coverage, and the outstanding quality of its impressive and abundantly illustrated maps and photos of Bible lands.”
—John McRay, Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Archaeology, Wheaton College Graduate School, Wheaton, IL

“I had the privilege of being involved in the production of drawings based on the latest research for the ESV Study Bible. It is a joy to see these drawings plus the original ESV Study Bible maps, woven together with numerous new maps, brilliantly evocative photographs and useful indexes to make up the new Crossway Bible Atlas. This volume will become an indispensable companion for Bible students, fulfilling every expectation you might have of such a tool. Particularly innovative is the use of terrain imagery to facilitate the reader’s understanding of such Biblical viewpoints as that of Abraham from Hebron over the cities of the plain or Moses from Mt. Nebo.”
—Leen Ritmeyer, Archaeological Consultant

Quick Comparative Review of a marvelous Bible Atlas: ESV
By DR-J-J
Having seen the detailed reviews of several others, I wanted to focus on some things that teachers/pastors/or strong lay leaders might be interested in. How does the ESV Bible Atlas compare to other wonderful Bible Atlases? How usable is it?

The Crossway ESV Bible Atlas is a marvelous resource. I would be shocked that anyone would ever rate it lower than a 4 star resource. I gave it 5. But I noticed that if you read the reviews for the other major Bible atlases, that you see similar reviews. They all tout how marvelous this and that atlas is and how it is the one to buy. So, how does the ESV Bible Atlas stack up? What are strength and weaknesses? How about teaching resources?

As a teacher, let me point out two key things that make this Bible Atlas stand out: the ESV includes a CD with digital maps and searchable indexes, and, in addition, a removable, 17 x 22-inch map of Palestine. The wall map is very nice, but probably too small to be considered a "wall map." Still, very nice. (It is inside the back cover). The CD-ROM is worth the price of the book by itself. It is highly useful, and unlike one other reviewer, I thought the resolutions are wonderful. No, you don't get the high-def brilliant images that are in part 4 of the book, but you can easily print (note: I am not saying you should) an 8x10 or larger copy and you will not notice any poor image quality.

The CD-ROM:
As a teacher, I can imagine using these images in a PowerPoint presentation or on a hand-out. They are wonderful. So, the question becomes, is that permissible? I couldn't find a direct answer, but many reviewers have said that this can be done. Several bloggers mention, "These maps can be easily added to Powerpoint for use in the classroom." I will update this, if I find out differently. Obviously, if the user has permission to use these maps in PowerPoints or hand-outs for a class, this makes this Atlas top choice for teachers and other leaders.

The CD-ROM comes with 127 maps that are taken from the Bible Atlas (and a couple from the ESV Study Bible?). How big? One is a 1575×2298 pixel map of Palestine and the ANE in the late Bronze Age. Another is a map of the Roman Empire that is an amazing 2240×1463 pixels. Most of the others are smaller, but they fit nicely on a page, and look very good and readable. The CD-ROM indexes these maps by chapter and number. A HTML starter page gives brief descriptions. For me, the easiest way to use the maps is 1) use the book as a guide to what I want, or 2) just pull up my Windows Picture Preview pane and scroll through the maps that way.

As far as I know, the only other Atlas that gives digital maps is "Biblica: The Bible Atlas" (and only certain editions of that) and that is a big plus to have such usable Bible Maps in a handy CD-ROM format. Much like the ESV Bible Atlas, I recommend Biblica for the CD-ROM of Maps, just be sure you get the edition that has the CD-ROM Biblica: The Bible Atlas: The Story of the Greatest Story Ever Told (with CD-ROM and in Slipcase). Biblica's maps are the same (or nearly so) as the maps you see in New Moody Bible Atlas. Doh! I am failing to mention Rose Publications maps. They now have CD-ROM's of their maps. Rose maps are known for clarity, color, and usability. You are certain to have rights to use the Rose Publication maps, just purchase the right format for you. Rose Publication maps are much "simpler" and cleaner looking, but if you teach kids or lay people, they are great. There is also an online set of maps form BibleMapper.

How about the Atlas itself?

Crossway's ESV Bible Atlas is amazing. I recommend it whole heartedly. Throw in the CD-ROM and it is a no-brainer. :) If I could only buy one Bible Atlas, the ESV Bible Atlas would be top on my list. The detail of the text (and yes, this is a "study atlas") is outstanding. The only other recent atlas that comes close is the New Moody Atlas of the Bible(2009) which was just recently updated. Some will prefer the New Moody Atlas of the Bible to the Crossway ESV Bible Atlas. That is understandable. They are both so solid and have so many maps and so much good historical and societal information that it is very hard to place one above the other. And if that isn't tough enough, I put Zondervan's Atlas of the Bible (rev. ed.) right there in the mix. All three are outstanding. *(I love Rasmussen's first hand experience and his clear text which supports some of the most beautiful maps I have seen in an Atlas...be sure to get latest edition).

The ESV Bible Atlas is such a solid buy, I don't see how you would be disappointed. If you don't need/want the CD-ROM and want good technical details and history, Beitzel's New Moody Atlas of the BibleThe New Moody Atlas of the Bible is every bit as solid. Dr. Beitzel has many years of experience both in the classroom and in the Middle East. Where he shines is that he presents alternatives to a biblical question and then provides his possible solution. Rasmussen's text is that of a first hand historian and archeologist; he knows the land so well, and that comes out in his Atlas Zondervan Atlas of the Bible. The beauty of the maps are unsurpassed. The other Bible atlases (IVP) may also be excellent, but I think that most would agree that the level of detail and information, the clarity and beauty of the maps, and the cultural and historical information within are best with Crossway's ESV, the New Moody, and Rasmussen's Atlas from Zondervan.

Enjoy!

Great Product for Study
By Brendan Knox
I've always enjoyed maps. This is most clearly evident in my early childhood and pre-teen years. It began with drawing maps of fantasy lands and the drawing of battles upon maps of the world collected free from the library. I fondly remember asking my Grandma for a Webster's Geographical Dictionary and promptly receiving the volume for my birthday which sits on my shelf to this day. For a time, I even contemplated putting up "map-of-the-world" wallpaper on the walls of my bedroom and bathroom. Though I have moved on to other subjects of interest I still enjoy looking at maps and putting historical events in their geographical context. It was therefore with great excitement that I opened up the newly released ESV Bible Atlas from Crossway. I am a user of the ESV translation and I have greatly appreciated the work Crossway has done with this translation, especially with last years ESV Study Bible which is a very helpful (and hefty!) volume.

Geography is a very important area of study but takes on a special importance when geography is intimately involved with the events that took place in the Word of God. It is in time and place in which the revelation of God took place through history. The Biblical interpreter should have an intimate understanding of the geographical and historical conditions surrounding the events of Scripture. In this regard, the ESV Bible Atlas is an indispensable tool for doing historical and geographical research. The atlas has four sections:

Part 1: This section is an introduction and overview of the Biblical world providing historical information in the text regarding the surrounding lands and customs of these ancient peoples.

Part 2: This is the majority of the atlas taking about 200 pages and serves as a chronological guide to the whole of Scripture beginning in Genesis and concluding with the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. There is a helpful section on the inter-testamental period covering geographical and historical information that is crucial to understanding the context of the New Testament.

Part 3: This section is about 40 pages of beautiful, highly-detailed full color maps on glossy paper. There are maps throughout the text on almost every other page but this section contains the largest maps and the most detail for these various areas.

Part 4: This section has a number of helpful charts providing chronologies of Biblical history, kings of Israel, and the Herodian Dynasty. The index is contained in this section as well.

The text is engaging and very well written and could serve as a basic Old and New Testament survey covering the major events and providing geographical and archeological information. There are photos on almost every page of both archeological artifacts and sites as well as modern photography of the Biblical lands. Throughout the text there are a number of "excursus" sections providing information on such subjects as The Garden of Eden, The Golden Calves, The Lachish Letters, and Alexandria among others. There are also a large variety of illustrations, many taken from the ESV Study Bible but there appears to be new ones as well. If you are in the market for a Bible atlas (and you should be if you don't have one) I would highly recommend this volume for any student of Scripture which provides a comprehensive view of the lands of the Bible and makes a valuable reference tool.

Thank you to Crossway for providing me with a review copy!

Great Bible Atlas: Bonus CD Was Disappointing
By Daniel M. Wright
The ESV BIBLE ATLAS is an exquisite, well-crafted and accessible volume. The level of detail and the quality of the maps make this a very useful tool for "getting it right" when attempting to place biblical events in their proper location and context. This hard cover edition has significant weight and size, while not being too cumbersome.

There is a pull-out, physical map of the land of "Palestine" in full color that is nice, but a little small.

Along with the usual writings and maps one would expect, this atlas contains a number of historic illustrations of ancient architecture and particularly a series that shows Jerusalem's growth over time; with the development of the subsequent Holy Temples there. Archaeologist and temple mount historian, Leen Ritmeyer, was an adviser on this atlas project and his team had a significant hand in the development of these scholarly illustrations. They look exquisite!

For me, the only disappointment with this atlas was the promised CD inside the back cover. The disc contained a simple HTML file with links to low-resolution maps in chronological/biblical order. Pretty good for quick study, but I was hoping for a little more bang for the buck!

Four Stars! All-in-all a refreshing and accurate book that will assist many in learning more about the Bible.
