The Madman: His Parables and Poems, by Kahlil Gibran

Widely known in America as author of The Prophet, which sold more copies in the 20th century than any other book but the Bible, the great Lebanese-American poet and artist Kahlil Gibran (1883–1931) first became known to Americans in 1918 with the publication of The Madman.
Thought-provoking and inspiring, the book is a collection of memorable, life-affirming parables and poems, many of them casting an ironic light on the beliefs, aspirations, and vanities of humankind — and many reminiscent of the work of Tagore and Nietzsche, both of whom were strong influences on Gibran.
Among the 35 poems and parables in this volume are "How I Became a Madman," "The Two Hermits," "The Wise Dog," "The Good God and the Evil God," "Night and the Madman," "The Three Ants," "When My Sorrow Was Born," "And When My Joy Was Born," and many more.
The book includes several illustrations by the author, whose exquisite drawings are reminiscent of Rodin and the best of Blake. ". . . the greatest of Arab Romantics and father of a 20th-century Romantic tradition whose impact on Arab writers has been at least as strong as that of 19th-century figures such as Wordsworth and Keats on their English-speaking counterparts." — Dr. Suheil Bushrui, Director of the Kahlil Gibran Chair on Values and Peace, University of Maryland

About the Author
Kahlil Gibran was a Lebanese artist, poet, and author. Born in Bsharri, Lebanon, Gibran immigrated with his parents to Boston in 1895 before settling in New York City where he studied art and began his literary career, writing in both English and Arabic. His best-known work is The Prophet, published in 1923, which has become one of the best-selling books of all time. Like the majority of Gibran s works, The Prophet dealt with spiritual love and religion. Gibran passed away in 1931.

Gilbran's first masterpiece
By Steve Marson
Kahlil Gilbran's masterpiece has always been considered THE PROPHET. In addition to writing this profound and inspiring poetry, he composed 12 other books of verses. However, none of these are as renown as THE PROPHET. In fact, many Americans who love THE PROPHET don't realize the existence of his other work. This is too bad.
THE MADMAN was first published in 1918. Although written nearly 100 years ago, it remains timely. In addition, it was Gibran's first published verse. It went out of print several years ago, but has recently been made available. This book of verse is a real treasure. Of all Gilbran's writing, THE MADMAN is my favorite. In fact, I like it more than THE PROPHET. I found it thoughtful, insightful and most importantly self reflecting.

Perfect
By Puff
This is a collection of short parables ranging in length from a single paragraph to a few pages. They are individualist in nature and center around a single soul's dealings with the world around it. Notions of truth and being are communicated in that soul's interactions with God, friends, neighbors, strangers, animals and itself. It is quite possibly the most perfect writing I have ever read.
Fans of prose should enjoy Gibran's style immensely. I prefer it to the general colloquial style of writing and it is more expressive than similar styles of essay and short story writing. Gibran also has several other books, in addition to "The Prophet," that are worthy of reading. I own "The Madman,
"The Voice of the Master," and "Sand and Foam." This one is my favorite. It is an astoundingly eloquent, but still clear and expressive collection of writing on the most fundamentally important of all topics.
There are very few human beings capable of rivaling scripture in the emotions that their writings invoke. Kahlil Gibran was one of them.

Calming and Peaceful Reading
By Jam
Like all Gibran's writings, The Madman puts the mind in a peaceful and tranquil state.
The Madman is a collection of 35 short moral stories and poetry that tell the tale of an individual who had all his self-imposed illusions and artificial faces stripped from him, leaving him just with the truth of his life, his observations and his surroundings. It shows the irony of sanity and it's status as a social construct.

This book is very short (only around 71 pages, depending on your edition) and can be read very quickly. This is useful, because I've found I wanted to read it several times over. It's especially great for plane rides or any other situation in which you might find yourself harried or stressed with things beyond your control.

Everyday Reading: Poetry and Popular Culture in Modern America, by Mike Chasar

Everyday Reading is the first full-length critical study of the culture surrounding American popular and commercial poetry in the twentieth century. Exploring poetry scrapbooks, old-time radio show recordings, advertising verse, corporate archives, and Hallmark greeting cards, among other unconventional sources, Mike Chasar casts American poetry as an everyday phenomenon consumed and created by a vast range of readers in different and complex ways. Capturing American poetry’s truly diverse forms and appeal, Chasar shows how the genre helped set the stage—before television, rock music, video games, and the Internet—for the dynamics of popular culture and mass media today.

Chasar investigates twentieth-century American poetry’s audience of millions and maps its range of aesthetics, cultural uses, relationship to canonical verse, and unexpected presence in many parts of modern life. Far from being a marginal art form read by a select group of educated individuals, poetry was part and parcel of American popular culture, spreading rapidly as the consumer economy expanded and companies such as Burma-Shave exploited the form’s profit-making potential. Poetry also offered ordinary Americans a wealth of opportunities for creative, emotional, political, and intellectual expression, whether through scrapbooking, participation in radio programs, or poetry contests. By reenvisioning the uses of twentieth-century poetry, Chasar enables a richer understanding of the innovations of modernist and avant-garde poets and the American reading public’s sophisticated powers of feeling and perception.

Review

Mike Chasar's brilliant, witty book is the definitive guide to the growing field of American popular poetry. Empowered by prodigious research and informed by thorough knowledge of the traditional poetry canon, Chasar's five chapters take us deep into the way poetry functioned in the lives of ordinary people.

(Cary Nelson, Editor of The Oxford Handbook of Modern and Contemporary American Poetry )

An ambitious, serious claim on present-day literary studies, and a surprise and a delight. Mike Chasar combines the painstaking, arduous archival methods of real historians with the close analyses that we expect from literary critics, applied to verse, images, and informative prose ephemera. He persuasively links William Carlos Williams's innovations to roadside signs, the Iowa Writers' Workshop to the Hallmark card, and he may change how you see eminent writers' work. More than that, Chasar gets twenty-first-century readers to notice the uses that so many Americans, only a couple of generations ago, found for the poetry they enjoyed. Or, to take up a mode Chasar appears to be the first to analyze: THIS OLD-TIME VERSE/HAS LOTS TO SAY/IF YOU CAN READ IT/CHASAR'S WAY.

(Stephen Burt, Harvard University)

Chasar shows us that if we can rethink our ideas about poets and poetry, we will find that poems have always been part and parcel of modern life. This is an important―really, a necessary―book for anyone interested in modern poetics, the history of reading, and the many appearances of poetry in the era of its supposed disappearance.

(Virginia Jackson, University of California, Irvine)

A brilliantly written book, startling the reader with his thorough research and analysis of the evolution of poetry through the 20th and 21 centuries.

(Sheila Erwin Portland Book Review)

Highly recommended.

(Choice)

The originality of Chasar's close readings, the sheer amount of research informing each chapter, and the speculations on what can be learned from such careful analyses of popular cultural practices make Everyday Reading not so everyday and well worth reading.

(Lisa M. Steinman The Journal of American History)

... Well-documented, thoughtful... The publication of Chasar's book fits our times and provokes futuristic ponderings.

(Reception)

Innovative, important, and constantly successful.

(David Levine College Literature)

The lyric spring will never cease creating an emotional pressure, sought after by every searching consciousness--this is what Mike Chasar... has shown in his book Everyday Reading.

(Novoe literaturnoe obozrenie)

Review

Chasar's innovative and engaging study provocatively expands the archive for twentieth-century American poetry. His original research provides important documentary evidence of how poetry was shaped for use in everyday practice and how experimental writing effectively drew on that energy. He convincingly shows that American poetry in the opening decades of the twentieth century circulated among a number of different readers to a remarkable degree and left its traces in surprising areas.

(Edward Brunner, author of Cold War Poetry)

Everyday Thinking
By DJ Paul
I have to say that I am conflicted about this review and this book, and ultimately, I am very disappointed in the book.To be let down is twice as hard when your expectations have been raised. That is the situation I found myself in. I would appreciate your patience as I explain my two main points.
First, the book succumbs to typical, post-modernist "discourse" that ultimately "constructs" a book that functions as a "power" of the institution of the university. Forgive my satire and allow me to explain. This author is on to something original and strikingly interesting. He has a many interesting thesis and a truly impressive and remarkable amount of research to back him up. So as a researcher, this man is extraordinary. However, he is a very weak, unoriginal, uninspired and predictable thinker. The fact that this is the case is ironic to me. I will point to the exact moment that he lost me. When he wrote about the scrapbooks function as a sort of symbolic "home" that was evidenced in his case of the actual house that was turned into a sort of poetry scrapbook with poems pasted to the actual walls of the home. His point concerns how poetry became associated with the sphere of the domestic through "discources" and other post-modern jargon. The larger point was that scrapbook was a function of ideology that "served as a site of a particlar discipline in private property accumulation..." (58). I am so disappointed he has to become so radical and irrational in what could have been an amazing book. He actually suggests that the scrapbook trained or taught people to view accumulation of private property as the key to existential happiness. Everything is reduced to some function of capitalism. I am sorry this writer could not be a clear historian, but is to indoctrinated by modern University systems views of radical politics. Why did he have to ruin his own great research?
Final point, this man needs help with his writing style. Here I offer one anecdote as I was reading through the beginning of the second chapter about there was a transcript of the radio show, and I felt a sense of joy and relief to have clear, powerful and beautiful language. The contrast with the rest of the book was startling- more so than even of the juxtapositions of Pound and Guest poems in the book.
Overall, I am left feeling saddened by these errors that ruined the amazing historical research he achieved. However, I am happy I learned of some interesting practices (scrapbooking) and facts about poetry's wide-reach at the beginning of the last century.
Thank you.

Presence and Thought (A Communio Book), by Hans Urs von Balthsar

Von Balthasar presents one of the few serious studies available on the thought of one of the most important, and yet most neglected Fathers of the Church, Gregory of Nyssa. He was the most profound Greek philosopher of the Christian era, a mystic and an incomparable poet whom St. Maximus designated as the "Universal Doctor" and the Second Council of Nicaea declared him "Father of Fathers."

Less prolific than Origen, less cultivated than Gregory Nazianzen, less practical than Basil, Gregory of Nyssa nonetheless outstrips them all in the profundity of his thought, for he knew better than anyone how to transpose ideas inwardly from the spiritual heritage of ancient Greece into a Christian mode.

A theological beauty of a book
By Vincent Rossi
The outstanding quality of Hans Urs von Balthasar's thought stems, I believe, from his early, pioneering work in Patristics. He wrote three seminal studies of three of the greatest and most influential of the patristic writers, Origen, Gregory of Nyssa and Maximus the Confessor, and he drew the core principles of his own systematic thinking from the writing of these giants of Christian metaphysics and spirituality. This book is the second of these studies, and it simply is one of the best and most perceptive analyses of St. Gregory in print. Everything Balthasar says about beauty as a key to theology and spirituality, for example, can be found in the writings of St. Gregory of Nyssa, the patristic apostle of beauty as a Divine attribute and gift. This book is a must for both those interested in St. Gregory and for those looking for an insight into von Balthasar.

Excellent monograph on Gregory of Nyssa
By Greg
St Gregory was a very subtle thinker, one unfortunately fairly poorly studied until fairly recently by scholars.

Hans urs Von Balthasar's studies, as with several of his works which explore Patristic thought, illumines for the first time many aspects of this great Eastern Father's philosophical and theological thought.

Gregory of Nyssa is revealed by Balthasar as both an outstanding theologian and philosopher, who applies Greek metaphysical ideas of Being and Infinity to the God of Christian belief. For Gregory what is central is God's infinitely transcendant Being, which by virtue of its metaphysical infinity is entirely incomprehensible in every way to the human mind. Nevertheless, the human mind is drawn to participate in the mystery of infinite Being, both by its beauty and by its infinite fullness and richness, but is always defied as the finite can never rest in the infinite. Somewhat contrary to Thomas Aquinas or Augustine, Gregory has a very dynamic view of God and the soul's relation to it, having the view the soul is always ever drawn further into the mystery of Being, or else ever further descending into nothingness if it falls away from Being.

Gregory also offers a deeply subtle philosophical and theological idea of time and temporality and change, and weaves a rich metaphysical tapestry into which the life and existence of each being is a mysterious paradox standing on the bridge between the fullness of God's unfathomable being and the emptiness of non-being. Man is by nature a temporal creature, also ever gravitating towards death and nothingness, but at the same time called to immortality by participating in God's being.

This monograph brings out many of the more subtle and interesting ideas in Gregory of Nyssa's thought, which has a depth which matches that of a Descartes, Hegel, Kant or Husserl in our own modern era. For any philosopher of religion or theologian, this book is well worth reading carefully.

Must Read Devotionals
By Beth Milinski
Guideposts Spirit Lifter Series is a wonderful series for e-readers. 101 Moments of Prayers and 101 Moments of Trust are short e-book devotionals that really uplift readers and offer thought provoking verses and stories for readers. The authors: Elizabeth Sherrill and Marion Bond West are new authors to me and I am so glad I had the opportunity to read their writing. As I read these devotionals, it was apparent the sharing and transparency each of these authors offer their readers. These devotionals truly help you feel like you are not alone in where you are in life. These books are a wonderful addition to my library and I am so glad to have them to reread whenever I need my Spirit lifted! I highly recommend these two books to women who are looking for a devotional, you will truly be blessed.

Review
“Talk about an imagination!…all in all it turned out wonderfully…though I’ve read other novels with a circus theme, this one certainly comes off as unique…we are just scraping the surface for what the future will bring.” -yoururbanfantasy.com

About the Author
True to his Sagittarian nature, A.R. Kahler has been on the move since he could walk. In the past three years alone, he's toured with circus troupes across America, taught trapeze in Madrid and Amsterdam, received his Masters in Creative Writing at Glasgow University and even served as an assistant to authors Holly Black and Cassandra Clare. He's also a weekly Vlogger with the YARebels Youtube group. The first two books in his post-apocalyptic YA fantasy—Martyr and Mender—are set to be published by Spencer Hill Press starting 2014, and his short story "A Child of Wight" was recently featured in Ambush Books' October anthology, Magical Mayhem. The Immortal Circus is his first adult novel.

Something different
By Heatherbug
Wow! I loved this book. I am an avid reader, but an infrequent review writer. This book inspired me to write a review in hopes that other people would give it a try. I originally borrowed this book through the Kindle Owner's Lending Library. While this is far from the first book I have read this way, it is the first book that I have gone back to purchase (pre-order) the next book in the series. (I am now anxiously awaiting its release!) I also purchased this book as I look forward to reading it again. It has enough twists and turns to make it worth a re-read.
I have at times been disappointed by the highly rated books available to borrow for free. (I suppose most of us have a tendency to be more critical of things we had to pay for.) Let me assure you that this book fully deserves the ratings it is accumulating, even if it had been in the price range of a current best seller!
This book has a wonderful mix of mystery, fantasy and unusual characters. The ending hits the perfect mark of leaving you satisfied that you finished the book, but wanting the story to go on. The story line is unique and the plot fast paced. All in all a great read! Enjoy!

A quality, but flat book
By Daniel Bogle
The Immortal Circus combines a unique premise and fast paced style to capture the reader in a story of mystery. While worth reading, it unfortunately leaves something to be desired in its character development and plot devices.

The main character's personality is stagnant, as it never develops and is trapped in a few simple emotions (infatuation, anger, and fear). She never deviates beyond those feelings or comes to a stronger understanding of her life or what kind of person she is. The plot devices also are incredibly lacking, as new elements of the plot simply happen and are accepted. Mysterious backstory elements are stated and easily accepted in the story line. There is no foreshadowing, questioning of dubious information, or explanation into why things happen the way they do.

Ultimately I encourage reading this book, but do not expect a work of literary genius.

Read to my Heart's Content Reviews
By Amy@Read to My Heart's Content
This is a fast paced, sexy as hell, romantic supernatural mystery that combines so many magical elements it creates this thrill ride that you hope will never end!

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the circuses we grew up on had this type of allure to them? Magicians that capture our minds with spells, while the fey like performers capture our eyes with their graceful moves. Oh what a wonderful world indeed that would be!

Lucky for us, Mr. Kahler created a world with these very powerful beings who can transform everything around us with just a blink of the eyelid. From the very first page, we are thrust right into the dark world of the Cirques de Immortales where a performer has been murdered. Right away, we get a glimpse of the dangerous side to this profound group of circus performers.
It is told from Vivienne's standpoint, so we are kept in the dark, only learning things as she learns them. There are a few times we are privy to certain conversations between other characters that help us see a little bit more into everyone's parts that they are destined to play.
I liked Vivienne for the most part. There were times she seemed a little naive concerning the background info on the other members of the circus, but in her defense she had a lot on her plate so I guess that could be understandable.
Besides our main character, the others are an interesting lot too. Kingston is a heartthrob indeed! Every time I hear his name, I imagine this tall gorgeous man wearing a top hat (magicians have to have their top hats) and an overcoat with no shirt open. Oh goodness me!
I, personally, love our leader of the Immortal Circus, Mab of the Winter Court. She is sexy incarnate. She is dark, deceptive, and yet I feel drawn to her like a magnet. Mab has this pull which is probably why everyone found their way to her; she knew their weakness and this is how she is able to get the "contracts" from them.

The plot threads in the story are addictive. Everyone knows that The Winter Court despises the Summer Court and yet things are not as they seem. I wouldn't label Mab as good in the book; but I could not give the Summer Court Fey this title either. Both courts are devious and only interested in their own means. After reading the book, though, I found it hard to root for the Summer court. The winter court had some very amazing creatures helping them, even though they could have been terrifying, it still was enjoyable to see them working together helping the circus.

There is so much more to come in these books I am going to be biting my nails waiting on the next book to come out. Mab has many dark secrets up her sleeves and I am terrified for what Vivienne has to play in the future of the Immortal Circus.

I highly suggest you come to the circus, where your inhibitions can be released as you experience a magically induced sensual journey into one of the most secretive and dark fantasies to come to the pages of a book.

I wholeheartedly give The Immortal Circus five hearts!

The Hero And the Blues, by Albert Murray

In this visionary book, Murray takes an audacious new look at black music and, in the process, succeeds in changing the way one reads literature. Murray's subject is the previously unacknowledged kinship between fiction and the blues. Both, he argues, are virtuoso performances that impart information, wisdom, and moral guidance to their audiences; both place a high value on improvisation; and both fiction and the blues create a delicate balance between the holy and the obscene, essential human values and cosmic absurdity.
Encompassing artists from Ernest Hemingway to Duke Ellington, and from Thomas Mann to Richard Wright, The Hero and the Blues pays homage to a new black aesthetic.

Review
"[Albert Murray] is possessed of the poet's language, the novelist's sensibility, the essayist's clarity, the jazzman's Imagination, the gospel singer's depth of feeling."

-- The New Yorker

In this visionary book, the author of the legendary Stomping the Blues takes an audacious new look at black music and, in the process, succeeds in changing the way we read all literature. Albert Murray's subject is the previously unacknowledged kinship between fiction and the blues. Both, he argues, are virtuoso performances that impart information, wisdom, and moral guidance to their audiences. Both place a high value on improvisation. And both fiction and the blues create a delicate balance between the holy and the obscene, essential human values and cosmic absurdity.

Encompassing artists from Ernest Hemingway to Duke Ellington, and from Thomas Mann to Richard Wright, The Hero and the Blues is at once an homage and a manifesto for a new black aesthetic. Erudite, eloquent, appreciative, and iconoclastic, it is further evidence of Murray's ability to turn the essay into a kind of poetry -- as enchanting as it is instructive.

"The size of his reputation is incommensurate with his quality .... Murray is as close to a classic nineteenth-century man of letters as one might find in this country today."

Put on your time-annhialating hats, kids
By A Customer
This is a complicated essay; like the previous reviewer mentioned it might be a good idea to have some Thomas Mann and Hemingway under your belt.
That being said, this is the most witty, insightful, coherent and thought-provoking essays I have ever read. Not only is Murray's style pure thrilling joy to absorb, but his examinations into aesthetics, the blues, tragedy, and improvisation are masterful. This book entirely changed the way I view the role of literature and art in life.
That is about all I can say. Murray knits a view of confrontation with life in art that nimbly leaps between Hemingway and Duke Ellington. I found his conclusions about the role of the blues and books in life endlessly compelling. I consider this book to be a treasure, from one of the unsquarest cats I've ever read.

A must read to understand the human condition
By Ken Mask
Albert Murray places into a clear and precise perspective what it means to be a human. In this philosophical piece, which reads like a college lecture, he gives us the tools to learn and grow and read and feel the essence of living. He provides a succinct template for educating ourselves and those around us.
Please make this a part of your library. And, share and like.....

a classic
By Randolph Severson
Albert Murray is one of the seminal figures in American intellectual history. In these lectures his understanding of the nature of the Hero and the "Cooperative Antagonist" and of the inseparability of adversity and opposition from enduring human accomplishment is unsurpassed. As he poetically expresses it, "the firedrake is an evocation to the hero" In many ways Murray is the 20th Century Emerson, though he writes with a more deliberate scholarship, a more thorough and sophisticated comprehension of the nexus between individual and community, a greater elegance and fluency in style, and a life affirming syncopated beat. Highly recommended.

Amid poverty and tight rules and regulations, women especially must sacrifice dignity and safety in order to find work and peace. Tolani Ajao is a secretary working at Federal Community Bank. A succession of unfortunate events leads Tolani's roommate and volatile friend Rose to persuade her to consider drug trafficking as an alternative means of making a living. From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In Atta's spirited and largehearted second novel (after the collection, News from Home), two young woman office workers navigate the rapids of the urban jungle of Lagos. Rose, and the narrator, Tolani, live and work together, making the long, arduous daily commute by bus and sharing "seats, sweat, and gossip." They often don't agree: Rose, at 30, flits from man to man to avoid falling into what she calls "the black hole" of dependency and inertia, and disapproves of Tolani's longtime boyfriend, Sanwo, who won't propose. However, Rose's irrepressible temper gets her fired, leaving her vulnerable to the manipulation of a new boyfriend, OC, who convinces her to mule drugs to England. Tolani has her own woes: she breaks up with Sanwo after he loses her savings; she has to work with a new, lecherous boss; her aging mother is ever more fragile; and she learns her father, now dead, may not have actually been her father. But will she take OC up on his offer of quick money? Tolani's tale encompasses towns and villages, corruption and superstition, deceit and loyalty, all beautifully layered and building toward a wallop you never see coming. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Nigerian-born Atta, now living in the U.S., excels at telling stories of her native land, this time centering on bank clerk Tolani Ajao and Rose, her friend, roommate, and colleague at Federal Community Bank in Lagos, with interspersed accounts by Tolani’s mother, Arike, in her native village of Makoku. After Rose is fired for slapping her boss, Tolani gets her job and puts the man on notice when he sexually harasses her, displaying the same strength her mother showed as a young woman who shocked townspeople by riding a Vespa in her village. With Rose out of work and Tolani suspended, they consider drug running to make ends meet. As Tolani struggles with the morality of being a mule and the difficulty in swallowing the contraband, she must also deal with her boyfriend, who has lost her savings, while being haunted by questions of her own parentage. Atta captures the sights, sounds, and smells of her native land in the 1980s, with its War against Indiscipline in effect, as it straddles Western ways and native customs. A meandering novel with a painful punch. --Michele Leber

Review
"In this unique novel, outstanding new literary talent Sefi Atta takes great strides in style and form, to bring wit and passion to the heartbreaking story of Tolani and Rose, two young women struggling, not always successfully, to make an honest living in contemporary Nigeria... Atta tells in an eminently readable voice the irreconcilable nature of the two friends' fates." --Tsitsi Dangarembga, author of Nervous Conditions

"Tender, fierce, vivid and memorable -- a bold, distinctive novel from a writer who doesn't compromise her integrity." --Leila Aboulela, author of Minaret

"Sefi Atta has woven a quietly intricate powerful tale that pulls from problems of gender, class, and Lagosian life. It's a novel whose many colorful characters, compelling story, distinct place and turbulent time will stay with you long after you've read the last word." --Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu, author of Zahrah the Windseeker

"No contemporary Nigerian writer is better than Sefi Atta at evoking the smells, sounds and the sheer madness of this sprawling cosmopolitan city of Lagos." --Toni Kan Onwordi, author of Nights of the Creaking Bed

"The bustle, chaos and fast rhythm of Lagos jump from the pages of Swallow, Sefi Atta's new book. It is fiction steeped in life." --Veronique Tadjo, author of As the Crow Flies

Sefi Atta's novel is a literary gem.
By Joy Cagil
Tolani is a single woman living with a roommate, Rose, in Lagos, Nigeria. In the beginning of the story, both women work in the same office where red tape, biases, and corruption abound. Rose is fired and Tolani is made to take her place with Rose's immoral boss, Mr. Salako. Besides the relationship of these two women, Tolani's mother's story seeps intermittently into the plot, giving it even more depth.

Later, while Rose takes up with a drug dealer, Tolani loses her boyfriend. What happens to these two women at the end of the story, and more so, what happens internally to Tolani is a powerful tale. It addresses women's psychological struggles and their fights to find their rightful place in a corrupt society.

This book was an eye-opener for me. I knew little if nothing about Nigeria, about its tribal prejudices, city and country life, civil war, and corruption in government and society, but I was especially impressed by the uniquely strong women in the story, strong despite superstition, social prejudice, and difficult everyday life, and also, I thought their camaraderie despite everything was truly awesome.

What most pleases me about this novel is its skillful portrayal of fully developed characters. It is those characters that carry the plot through the minute details of everyday life. In the hands of a lesser writer, this story could have been a bore, but Sefi Atta's pen has made it a literary winner.

Swallow Review
By Erinwp
In her novel Swallow, Sefi Atta gives us the story of Tolani Ajao and her obstinate friend and roommate Rose. Tolani and Rose are two women living in Lagos, Nigeria during the eighties, and the story follows their struggles to survive in an urban world that is adverse to women and hostile towards all.
From its very beginning the novel impresses us with the dangers of transportation, both public and private, in Lagos. The bus carrying the narrator, Tolani, and Rose nearly overturns, flinging its screaming passengers and conductor about before righting itself and carrying on with its journey as if nothing ever happened. This is only one of many stories illuminating the perils of the road in Lagos, and the characters are quick to turn their attention back to more important matters. Unpleasant bus rides and the stench, danger, and discomfort of public transport is evident throughout the novel, as it is in much of Nigerian fiction, but this particular incident sets the tone for the novel as a whole and seems to reflect more than the various incidents of public transport. The novel is filled with sudden shocks of danger and distress, and Tolani is in a constant struggle to regain her balance and to find satisfaction in a life that seems consistently willing to crush her.
The daughter of a famous drummer, Tolani comes from the small town of Makoku. Once a predominant farming community ruled by a royal family, the Makoku of Tolani's youth -- and especially that of her mother's youth -- has transformed into a place filled with service businesses, shrinking farms, and diminished forests. The main story narrated by Tolani is interspersed with pieces of Tolani's mother's story and the Makoku she grew up in with Tolani's father. Arike (Tolani's mother) narrates these fragments of her past which serve to illuminate the transition of Makoku towards the present and make sense of both her and Tolani's past and present circumstances.
Both Tolani and Arike's stories involve their separate efforts towards bettering themselves and their possible futures in a place and time where independent women are met with suspicion and malice -- especially for Arike. In Lagos, Tolani attempts to deal with her relationship issues with Sanwo, her boyfriend of over two years who continues to evade marrying her despite his own promises and her pressures. Tolani's boss, Mr. Salako, has recently fired Rose and forced Tolani into her old position. Mr. Salako is basically your typical scumbag-boss type -- perverted, overtly pretentious and self-centered , and completely ignorant -- and he has taken it upon himself to make Tolani's job as difficult as possible. All the while Rose is at home, now unemployed and spending her days on the couch, much to Tolani's uneasiness and aggravation.
Poverty and disappointment eventually drive both women towards the offers of a wealthy drug trafficker, leaving Tolani questioning the direction her life is taking and striving to find a moral footing in a place where honor is reserved for the rich and morality requires payment in Naira. The bulk of the novel is devoted towards Tolani's journey to find herself and a path towards future happiness and contentment with the past.
Although much of the novel is unique to the experiences of Nigeria and centers around the sights, smells, dangers, and details of Lagos, its themes also speak to the universal. The struggle to find oneself as a woman in a male dominated world is something I think most women can relate to -- albeit on different levels -- and the difficulty of coming to terms with the skeletons of ones past and finding a path towards the future is equally relatable. Sefi Atta makes the tensions between the traditional and the contemporary, between the city and the village, and between the individual and the crushing pressures of life are both universally relatable and uniquely Nigerian.
Some might find the plot of the novel boring -- many things happen and yet it seems that nothing really happens. The story is focused much more on character development than compelling plot-line, and the lack of identifiable chapter breaks can be quite exhausting. However, Atta's style and prose are excellent and the way she has sutured together the drama-filled stories of her characters keeps the novel flowing and readable.

Tells the story of two Nigerian women facing a world that seems to hate them and treat them as second class citizens
By Midwest Book Review
With the weight of the world on one's shoulders, enduring it can be quite the endeavor. "Swallow" tells the story of two Nigerian women facing a world that seems to hate them and treat them as second class citizens. Tolani and Rose provide the protagonists of Sefi Atta's story, as they both face their own unique paths in their life to deal with their bad lot. Engaging and thoughtful, Atta's "Swallow" is sure to receive the same acclaim as her previous novel and short story collection, granting it a very high recommendation.
