About the Author
DOROTHY BOTTRELL is Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney, Australia. She worked in secondary teaching, juvenile justice, youth and community work before taking up an academic post in 2007. Dorothy is Convenor of the University of Sydney Network on Childhood and Youth Research and co-editor of Schools, Communities and Social Inclusion (Palgrave, 2011) and Communities and Change (2008).
DERRICK ARMSTRONG is Professor of Education and is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the University of Sydney, Australia. His research has focussed on issues of social inclusion and exclusion in education and the ways in which disadvantage and 'deviance' are identified and managed by professionals, social agencies and institutions working with children and young people. He is author, co-author and editor of eight books and monographs. His most recent publication is Inclusive Education: International Policy and Practice (2010) with A.C. Armstrong and I. Spandagou.
ALAN FRANCE is Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. He has, over the past 20 years, been researching and writing on youth related issues. He set up and established the International Centre for the Study of Childhood and Youth (CSCY) at the University of Sheffield in 2002 and was Director of the Centre for Social Policy Research (CRSP) at Loughborough University (2006 – 2010). He has written extensively on youth policy, risk, citizenship, and youth crime and has a number of publications including Understanding Youth in Late Modernity (2007) and Pathways and Crime Prevention (2007).

It shows how to attain optimal growth in young stock, so that as cows, they can calve at an appropriate early age at the lowest cost and promptly substitute for any cows culled from the milking herd. This provides continuing returns on the investments of feed, labour and other farm resources.
Low reproductive rates and high calf mortality are the major causes of reproductive wastage. This has a direct bearing on culling and replacement strategies and on genetic improvement. In many tropical countries, calf mortality can be as high as 50%. In some areas this can be due to climatic stress on temperate or crossbred stock. While climatic stress compounds the other hazards of calf life, high calf mortality is usually due to diseases and poor feeding management.
Rearing Young Stock on Tropical Dairy Farms in Asia encourages the small holder dairy farmer to maintain their investment in replacement heifers and gives them the tools necessary to achieve realistic targets for mortalities, live weight gain, mating age, and age and live weight at first calving. About the Author
John Moran is a consultant with Profitable Dairy Systems, located in Kyabram, Victoria. His specialist fields include dairy production, ruminant nutrition, calf and heifer rearing, forage conservation and whole farm business management. In 2013, he was appointed as the Coordinator of the Asia Dairy Network, an international agency position to facilitate communication and collaboration of dairy industries from 15 countries throughout South and East Asia. Since 1999, he has initiated and conducted training programs on small holder dairy production to farmers, advisers and policy makers in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and East Timor. His books include Tropical Dairy Farming, Calf Rearing, Heifer Rearing and Forage Conservation, and he has also published more than 200 research and extension articles and written several farmer manuals on cattle nutrition.

In The Greek Concept of Nature, Gerard Naddaf utilizes historical, mythological, and linguistic perspectives to reconstruct the origin and evolution of the Greek concept of phusis. Usually translated as nature, phusis has been decisive both for the early history of philosophy and for its subsequent development. However, there is a considerable amount of controversy on what the earliest philosophers—Anaximander, Xenophanes, Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocles, Anaxagoras, Leucippus, and Democritus—actually had in mind when they spoke of phusis or nature. Naddaf demonstrates that the fundamental and etymological meaning of the word refers to the whole process of birth to maturity. He argues that the use of phusis in the famous expression Peri phuseos or historia peri phuseos refers to the origin and the growth of the universe from beginning to end. Naddaf’s bold and original theory for the genesis of Greek philosophy demonstrates that archaic and mythological schemes were at the origin of the philosophical representations, but also that cosmogony, anthropogony, and politogony were never totally separated in early Greek philosophy.

Gerard Naddaf is Professor of Philosophy at York University in Toronto. He is the coauthor (with Dirk L. Couprie and Robert Hahn) of Anaximander in Context: New Studies in the Origins of Greek Philosophy, also published by SUNY Press, and the translator and editor of Plato the Myth Maker by Luc Brisson.

Based on the Authors Translations

Because it is considered the foundations for most of our current culture and philosophy, we have been studying Greek philosophy for literally centuries. It is therefore to see this book come out with a somewhat different view of what the earlier Greek philosophers meant by the word phusis means.

Usually translated as nature, the author has come to the concusiion that the ancient philosophes used the word to mean 'origin, process and result.'

The author is clearly an expert on the ancient or classical Greek language, including some very obscure details of the grammer. He has used these to make his own translations of some of the earliest philosophical works. The differences in his translations are subtle, but they impact the meanings some of the earliest philosphers : Anazimander, Zenophanes, Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Empedocies, Anaxagoras, Leucippus and Democritus when they were using the word. The meaning of the word, obviously, can change the meaning of the entire work.

This is not an introductory text on Greek philosophical, but provides an interesting insight into some of these points.

This book provides realistic examples and solutions regarding professional responsibility for young professionals as they begin their careers in the real-world. It is well written, straightforward, and easy to understand. There are applicable solutions that readers can use immediately and preventative ways for young professionals avoid getting involved in unethical situations. This book is a key tool that every young professional should use to start their career with professional responsibility. C.K. Gunsalus' insight and experience in this matter is outstanding, unique, and relevant. Highly recommended for any student and/or young professional.

Useful guide for navigating ethical pitfalls

Almost no-one sets out to do something embarrassing, wrong or illegal, but external forces and internal choices, alone or in combination, can lead there, according to C K Gunsalus in this book. The book is a useful guide to ethics for its target audience of young professionals, but it is also useful for a professional at any stage of his or her career.

So how do you decide what to do when faced with an awkward ethical dilemma? You can do what most people do and make it up as you go along, but once you start to compromise and other people find out that you are willing to bend a bit, the pressure on you to make further compromises increases. The alternative approach is to decide beforehand how you will react, and what things you are and are not prepared to do.

Some of the wisdom contained in the book:

* Ethics, like life, consists of small acts done consistently over time.
* Ethics is not a luxury you can defer early in life and add on when you can afford to.
* However much you value integrity in the abstract, daily life will test it in ways you might not predict.
* Thinking deeply about your values and being able to articulate them will help you identify potential missteps that could trap you.
* Financial savings can give you the emotional and practical wherewithal to resist doing something that violates your standards, giving you an option to walk away without going hungry or homeless.
* Habits save your mental energy for making more important judgments.

The book provides advice on cultivating your reputation, creating energy, presenting a positive emotional attitude, sharing the glory, managing work relationships, dealing with toxic people, setting boundaries, different types of career pitfalls, avoiding temptation, facing up to difficult challenges, recognising and dealing with conflicts of interest, asking appropriate questions, creating scripts for dealing with awkward conversations, negotiation tactics, how to have a dispute professionally, and many similar subjects.

In my opinion this is a very useful book. While it does not force any particular set of ethical values on the reader, it does recommend a higher road than most professionals will be accustomed to taking. Most professionals will gain a great deal of benefit from reading the book carefully and devising a personal set of guidelines for responding to future ethical encounters.

A Must For Young Professionals Entering The Professional Workplace

Dr. Gunsalus' book is a must read for young professionals. Whether graduating from high school or college, this book provides a high quality, story based look at professional cultures, decision making, and development.

Many young professionals entering the workforce, I believe at record numbers, have never held a job. This was so that they could focus on academics, athletics, clubs, and other extraciricular activities. Today's high schools demand 24/7 student/athletes where training is year round. Hampering efforts for these teens to get jobs. Professor Gulsalus' book is an valuable way for such individuals to close the gap, understand the workplace, and understand the moral snares that do persist through one's career. Especially at the entry level.

Even as a 25 year executive, I found the book a wonderful read and review for my own development. And I am already using the book as a tool for individuals I manager, coach, or mentor. It is a great starting point for getting accross basic ideas of professional self management.
