Traditional yet unique, delicate yet heroic, Thérèse taught a shining spirituality that could easily be adapted into everyday life. Her divine words of acceptance and love are universal, and have gently led many people — both within the Catholic Church and outside of Christianity — back to their faith.
Saint Thérèse was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1925. In 1997, she was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II.

About the Author
Michael Day completed his doctorate degree at Stanford University and has taught middle and high-school art in California. A widely published author and researcher, Dr. Day is a recipient of the Manuel Barkan Award for published research from NAEA. He has served on national panels, editorial boards for national scholarly publications, and art museum boards. He was invited to the former Soviet Union in a scholarly exchange sponsored by the International Research and Exchanges Board, and in 1998 he was one of five scholars invited to Beijing in a delegation sponsored by the Getty Education Institute and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. Dr. Day served as President of the NAEA from 1997 to 1999.

VERNON JOHNSON has wide experience as an author, theater director, and professor of world literature. He is co-author of "Understanding The Crucible". He now resides in Berkeley, California, where he continues to write and teach.

Quick As A Wink, Easy As 1-2-3

I must confess that I was not particularly enthused about Jessica Segarra's Mini Donuts: 100 Bite-Sized Donut Recipes to Sweeten Your "Hole" Day when I ordered it. While I love donuts, the idea of baked donuts instead of the traditional fried version hasn't been something that particularly attracted me. And then it arrived on my doorstep just about 3 hours before I was to leave for a couple of weeks visiting my daughter and granddaughter in the UK. Having nothing much better to do, I spent a good hour reading through all of the recipes instead of twiddling my thumbs while waiting to leave and I must say, I changed my mind in a hurry. In fact, I came this close to hauling the book and my Norpro 3980 12-Count Nonstick Mini Donut Pan along with me, thinking making these tiny treats might be a fun thing to do with my granddaughter. Weight won out and Mini Donuts: 100 Bite-Sized Donut Recipes to Sweeten Your "Hole" Day stayed behind, patiently waiting.

So, I crawled in the door just about 48 hours ago after 22 hours in a car, a bus, a plane and then a car again (NOT as young as I used to be!) and I've finally gotten up enough gumption to want something to eat other than whatever the pizza delivery guy can bring to my door, so out came the book and the pan.

I could have easily made about 90 of the 100 recipes in the book without so much as a trip to the store (that is saying something since the only "fresh" things in my fridge are milk and the buttermilk/sour cream/yogurt that was still in date when I left) but chocolate struck my fancy, so the remains of 2 1/2 dozen tiny Chocolate-Buttermilk Mini Donuts (page 44) sit proudly on the counter in my kitchen. They look just exactly like the pictures in the book and were an absolute breeze to make. (I would take a picture but I haven't unpacked enough to find the cable for the camera.) I didn't even bother to drag out the hand mixer!

All of these recipes are small, most requiring only a single cup of flour and one egg, so they are also pretty economical. Mixing is extremely straight forward, using only a 2 quart bowl and a whisk. I found that a scant 3 teaspoons of batter was the perfect amount for each little depression in the Norpro 3980 12-Count Nonstick Mini Donut Pan. (Three teaspoons is the same as a tablespoon, but distributing the batter in the smaller amounts made for a more even product. You could also use a piping bag with a medium tip, but that makes for more washing up.) As each dozen takes only about 7 or 8 minutes to bake, the recipe took well under an hour start to finish, including glazing the baked donuts. If I had had two of the mini-donut pans it would have taken under a half-hour. Surprisingly, I got exactly 30 donuts from the recipe, precisely the number that Jessica says I should get. (Since when does that happen?)

You'll find more flavors of donuts than you can shake sticks at here. Just 11 of them are the deep-fried sort. (You'll need a mini-donut cutter for those. This Ateco 2-1/2-Inch Stainless Steel Doughnut Cutter is the one I've had in my kitchen for many years.) For each of the remaining 89 donut recipes Jessica gives directions for both baking in a mini-donut pan like I did or using one of these electric donut makers - Babycakes DN-6 Mini Doughnut Maker, Yellow, 6 Donut, Sunbeam FPSBDMM921 Mini Donut Maker, Blue. Either way, lower calories and far more economical since neither method requires any great amount of expensive oil.

Grandma's $0.02: The donuts are scrumptious and dead easy with almost no learning curve. (Shake the pan and bang it a bit on the counter to distribute the batter evenly and you'll get perfect donuts every time.) Inexpensive and quick as a wink to make, turning out a variety is a simple but fun project that older children and teens will also enjoy. Perfect for tea parties too!

This is a book I'm going to use many, many times. Hmmm - maybe I'll make those Cranberry Orange Mini Donuts tomorrow . . .

Yes, you can actually make these!

The book starts out by explaining that she wanted to focus on ingredients that the average busy cook would actually have in their cupboard. Sure enough, these are actually cookable by mere mortals like me.

Each recipe even includes directions for both mini-donut pans and electric donut makers. Donut pans produce light, airy, cupcake-like donuts, and the machines create thicker, denser cakelike donuts - both are good, so you can start out on the cheap with the pan, and then move up to the electric maker if you're addicted.

The photos are lush and appetizing. The recipes you expect are there - blueberry cake, sour cream cake, etc - but there's ideas I never would have imagined. Fast canned-biscuit fried mini donuts that are ready in minutes?!? Salted caramel mini donuts? Sweet potato marshmellow mini donuts? Brown butter bourbon mini donuts? Wow - I'm impressed.

Mmmm .... donuts

Jessica Segarra offers 100 donuts recipes designed for frying, baking, and donut machines. Some recipes are specific (Glazed Fried Mini Donuts) while others can be baked in an oven or donut machine, or even fried. I had intended to try my new fryer, but instead went out and bought a Sunbeam FPSBDML920 Donut Maker, Yellow because I wanted to try recipes that didn't include frying.

So far I've made one recipe because I've only had the machine for about a week and a half. I chose the Chocolate Cake Mini Donut recipe and it came out very well. My only problem was that the batter was thicker than I expected (or maybe I let it sit too long) and I had to spoon it into the donut machine instead of pouring it. My result was donuts without holes, but they were delicious anyway!

My other mistake was letting the donuts cool and then thinking that I should make the icing. It still works, but my donuts won't be on the cover of a magazine too soon. I guess I'll just have to eat my mistakes and try again.

I gave the book four stars because I would really like to have some calorie information, but considering that donut machines vary in size this would probably have been impossible for the publisher. So, 4.5 stars if possible!

There are six chapters: classics, chocolate, fruity, donuts of the stars, bakery specials, candy-aisle donuts, drinks to donuts, and for the kid in you. Some of the recipes I want to make next are the Key Lime Pie, Dulce de Leche, and Eggnog. The recipes use ingredients that you are likely to find in any supermarket so you won't need to special order ingredients to make them.

The book isn't spiral-bound, but the pages are wide enough it wasn't too much of a problem getting the book to stay open. Recipes are organized with ingredients in a left column and step-by-step instructions on the right. The author includes variations in shaded boxes at the lower left. The book includes a recipe index for finding those donuts in a hurry.

This book is useless

I bought both this and Point It by Dieter Graf. Point it is a MUCH better book, Wordless .. borders on the childish and is really not a serious attempt to overcome language barriers. I found Point It much more helpful. It is well designed and covers a wide variety of items and occasions and is a much better buy.

Very Cartoon-y; expected more

I returned this book even though it was so cheap to start with that I lost money doing so, but I was just very disappointed. Drawings were cartoon-like and poor quality. I don't speak any language other than English, and I think I could communicate better without this book (actually looks more like a cheap pocket calendar)in a foreign country.

THE BEST WORLD TRAVEL HELPER!

This little book has been a joy to carry with us on world trips. I am an English speaker with only a slight working knowledge of the romance languages-- but was lost in Asia. My husband and I prefer to take local transportation to small out of the way places-- travel light and eat & sleep "locally". This tool was especially helpful in restaurants, street venders, hostels, hotels and bus stations throughout SE Asia. In our experience, the big cities and tourist spots often had pictures representing food one could purchase. This was not always the case in central China, for example. We had an abbreviated version while traveling the Amazon and in the Andes. It was equally helpful there and made for great, spontaneous entertainment with the children aboard our Amazon local boats. The book is only slightly larger than a passport so easily kept in your pocket. If you plan to be in the "boonies"--don't go without THE WORDLESS TRAVEL BOOK!

Worth its weight GOLD !

This book can DRASTICALLY reduce the amount of time you will spend revising pharmacology. Most review books are written in a paragraph form that does not at all aid the visual memorization of the page ; Something that makes one lose focus as one reads more and, after sometime, the acquired information starts to melt together into a perfectly unrecognizable cocktail that can by no means help one in an exam setting , much less in a clinical one. This book, however ,with its question-answer format, presents the information in a very memorable and thought-provoking manner that makes later revision a MUCH easier task than the revision of other review books. With all due respect to the great and famous Lippincot Pharmacology , this book is a lot better . It has almost all the information in Lippincot but written in a more user-friendly manner. It is GREAT for USMLE Step 1. Be good to yourself and buy this book.

"The book is a very fast and easy way to review Pharmacology.One can use it to learn key points about several drugs.It also helps in quick recollection of learnt facts and has the subject matter presented in an interesting question and answer format.It also has figures and tables that can be understood and remembered at a glance.Comprehensive coverage of in depth subject matter including toxicity and mechanism of various drugs .It has some useful mnemonics too.Great for the Step1 USMLE.Can be used as a companion with any Pharmacology review book."

I recently came across Pharmacology Recall in the book store and it was a great find! The book is concise so i was able to review a large amount of high yield information quickly. This book works well with lippincott's pharmacology as well. I have highly recommended it to other second years.

A rare look at reality of war.

Far too few accounts of war bring in the human element, and this piece of literature does in spades.
There is a truth to it, a living entity in the writing, that speaks to those that yearned for war and found it took from them more then just innocents. It was refreshing to see a well written flowing war memoir filled with the youthful and naive wanderlust that matures as the reader continues. Anyone would benefit from reading this book and I will do my best to pass its name to others.

A little self indulgent

A very good depiction of the realities of war and post traumatic stress syndrome. Very well written in parts. I agree that it was a page turner. The parts that I found irritating were those describing the relationships with the women. It was like a game and I did not get any sense of genuine love or closeness. Even the writing here was not as good. I was really pleased when Jake was compensated properly. Hopefully there will be more books.

Solid trauma resource for emergency physicians

This is a remarkable book and a welcome addition to the literature of emergency medicine. Many years in preparation, it is the combined effort of over a hundred authors. The result is a surprisingly tight, relevant, and expert text that will lend itself well as an on-the-job reference or as a guide for the study of state-of-the-art concepts in how to best manage trauma in the emergency room.

The text does a good job of providing a broad perspective on the many varied aspects of trauma without trying to be exhaustive. For example, the section on trauma procedures is exceptional, concise, and goes over those types of procedures that are unique to the emergency department, not the operating room. These include femoral nerve blocks (with illustrations of the needed anatomy by bedside ultrasound), flexor sheath digital blocks, DPLs, crics, and intraosseus access, all accompanied by beautiful step-by-step photographs.

I would have purchased the text for the procedural section alone. It's that good.

Overall, the text is obsessively edited, expertly referenced, and evidence based. Previously controversial subjects such as emergency room thoracotomy (written by a surgeon and emergency physician) are discussed dispassionately and objectively, a refreshing change from prior texts that questioned whether emergency physicians should be allowed to perform surgical procedures at all.

Publication by Cambridge University Press ensured the text was laid out for frequent use. The design is beautiful, something I appreciate from years of working in print prior to becoming an emergency physician. Tables and illustrations are liberally sprinkled throughout the body and are set off with color and a san serif typeface, making them easy to find and read.

The entire text is grouped into six broad sections. The meat of the work is embodied in section 2 (the injured patient), which provides specific management guidance on trauma to various organ systems. In addition to section 5 (procedures), my favorite is section 4 (imaging), which includes chapters on emergency ultrasound and interpretation of both plain and CT images by emergency physicians.

The book is well worth the price. As of this review, it's nearly sold out on Amazon, so the word has already gotten out. Whether you're a resident, pit doc, or academic faculty, it's a worthy investment. (I know because I've been all three.) I prize mine and will keep it in the e.r. for ready reference after I'm done reading up on all the stuff that's missing from ATLS.

Finally, we get a great trauma text that's written for emergency physicians.

An excellent reference for practicing physicians and residents alike

This is very well written, extremely useful text. The chapters provide enough background information to be useful and engaging for seasoned attending staff, but are not overwhelming. The diagrams and images are exceptionally clear. Several of my residents have spent time with the book and found it accessible and enjoyable. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to refresh or deepen their understanding of Emergency Department trauma care.
