Good study of JCS planning for the Pacific War

This book examines the role of the JCS in planning for the defeat of Japan. The author argues that the JCS was not merely focused on "winning the war" but also took political considerations into account. This required an effort to understand FDR's vision for the postwar world and to translate this into guidance for military operations. The author falls a little bit short on this front, because he does not consider how the war in Europe and US relations with the USSR influenced the Pacific Theater. There is perhaps a bit too much emphasis on the threat of "war weariness" as a "political" problem that affected planning. The book is well researched and written in a clear and straightforward style. At 152 pages without notes, it is a quick read.

Another reviewer complains that the book is outrageously expensive. This is true. I did not buy it, I borrowed it from the library. It is certainly not worth paying $80 for (the Amazon price new) or even $68 (the current Amazon price used). However, this was beyond the control of the author and I don't think this is a valid reason to give it a one-star review. My rating disregards the price issue.

Raymond Cattell, the father of personality trait measurement, was one of the most influential psychologists in the twentieth century, with a professional career that spanned almost seventy years. In August 1997, the American Psychological Association announced that Cattell had been selected the recipient of the American Psychological Foundation Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in Psychological Science. Then, only two days before the scheduled ceremony, the APF abruptly postponed the presentation of the award due to concerns involving Cattell's views on racial segregation and eugenics. In addition to his mainstream research, in his publications Cattell had also posited evolutionary progress as the ultimate goal of human existence and argued that scientific criteria should be used to distinguish "successful" from "failing" racial groups so that the latter might be gradually "phased out" by non-violent methods such as regulation of birth control.

The Cattell Controversy discusses the controversy that arose within the field in response to the award's postponement, after which Cattell withdrew his name from consideration for the award but insisted that his position had been distorted by taking statements out of context. Reflecting on these events, William H. Tucker concludes with a discussion of the complex question of whether and how a scientist's ideological views should ever be a relevant factor in determining the value of his or her contributions to the field.

Biba-licious

With the current wave of retro chic and groove nostalgia, fans of Austin Powers and Charlie's Angels would be hard pressed to find much information regarding style. Well kids, Barbara Hulanicki and Biba *were* style personified; not your fluorescent mod psychedelia, but true glam, as typified by Biba's trademark plum and chocolate Art deco vamp. Anyone who was anyone was seen at Biba, the fashion emporium of the decade (and beyond), and if you have a certain fondness for ostrich feathers, gold swirls and mahogany, this comprehensive history of Biba is a must. From Polish refugee to style queen, Barbara relates every detail of that heady decade, from her humble beginnings doing mail order, to the rise (and fall) of Big Biba in the Seventies in the old Derry and Tom's building on Kensington High Street. I was lucky enough to visit as a child in 1973, and fell in love with it, lock, stock and decadent barrel. My only beef with the book is that there should be many more pictures!! (and, there should be more books about Biba!) "Divine decadence"? Biba was *it*, darling!

A must read for any Fashion Retail lover or Entrepreneur

Many people don't realize, but Barbara Hulanicki was practically the founder of the fast fashion movement. Her story is about how she and her husband created a vertical company, Biba, during the 1960s and 70s in London. She's a true entrepreneur, tastemaker and visionary. Biba paved the way for Topshop, Zara, Forever21, Nasty Gal, etc. It would be interesting if the story covered the building of the business in more detail, but I'm sure there are more books out there. Her personal story is very vivid and interesting.

Poor quality binding - paperback. Work deserves better.

Published by the Victoria and Albert Museum of Art and Design. I was lucky to find this autobiography at deep discount available to USA reader. This book along with other books in the series of women designers ( Elsa Schiaparelli and Mary Quant. ) The writing style is very informative journalism. There is a focus on building family business. Running a fashion boutique in London in 70s. The talent for work place professionalism is apparent. I enjoy the smaller details of what inspired this taste-making designer. At the right place at the right timing. I recommend this book for people interested in marketing and brand-building. I also recommend it as supplemental text to women's studies.
I would have enjoyed this more if the book were a trade paperback binding. It's mass-market binding is unfortunate. My favorite in the series is Elsa Schiaparelli. This book is very detailed with what it takes to bring forth a seed idea and make it into a trendy lifestyle. I would have enjoyed more insight into the mind and soul of the designer. This is what the Schiaparelli book has, philosophical questions about female identity and success... as such I enjoyed that book more than this one. 3 stars. 4 If book had better binding.

Chapters on sculpting and mosaic-making are also thorough and give readers tips that Lego Master Builders use. A great feature of the guide is the Brickopedia, which categorizes more than 275 basic Lego pieces, providing specifications and notes on each one; though not all-inclusive, it does contain the most common items found in most individuals' collections. Templates and Web links for blank design grids include detailed instructions on how to properly use them when making one's own projects. The graphics are of the highest quality and accurately capture what the author is trying to convey without interrupting the flow of text. Bedford's style is engaging while taking some complicated topics and explaining them in clear, relatable language. Fabulous book to become an expert in Lego creations

When I was approached to review the Unofficial Lego Builder's Guide, I knew the kids would like to have a book showing them how to build things. As soon as I got the pdf version of this book (while waiting for the book to arrive via mail), I knew that my two oldest kids would be excited about it. So one day, I came in the living room holding my iPad in which the pdf was opened. Let me tell you that the iPad has not stayed long in my hands. Within seconds, my oldest son, who is 11, grabbed it and proceeded to go through it.

The book contains ten chapters guiding the reader in different constructions.
Chapter 1: The Lego System: Endless Possibilities - This chapter will introduce you to the brick vocabulary and the basics on how to build.
Chapter 2: Back to Basics: Tips and Techniques - This chapter gives you information on how to stack, overlap, stagger the bricks as well as on to build walls or bracing the bricks.
Chapter 3: Minifig Scale: Oh, what a wonderful minifig world it is! - This chapter will guide you in building a train station and help you to identify what you can substitute for when building with Lego.
Chapter 4: Miniland scale: The whole world in miniature - This chapter will present you how to build miniland figures and buildings.
Chapter 5: Jumbo Elements: Building Bigger Bricks - You have a dream to build in a giant scale? No problem, this chapter will show you how to create jumbo bricks.
Chapter 6: Microscale Building: More than meets the eye - This chapter will introduce you on how to build various building in a microscale size.
Chapter 7:Sculptures: The shape of things to build - Building spheres and the Sphinx.

A worthwhile purchase and a worthy addition to the Lego-building table...

My first impressions of this book were that it was immensely packed with information! The 200+ pages all contain tip-after-tip for learning to build with Lego, improving Lego building skills, or just getting ideas for building. When I first received this book, I flipped through it quickly and was struck by the thought that this could easily be a textbook for a Lego building class, if such a thing exists. (If it does not, it ought to exist, and I would love to be the first to sign up...especially if this book were to be used!) Quite frankly, this book is awesome.

The Unofficial Lego Builder's Guide begins by covering the very basics of Lego building before continuing to a discussion of scales in Lego (minifigure scale, miniland, microscale, etc). Chapters are then devoted to such topics as sculptures, mosaics, conceptualizing a Lego design (deciding on things like shape, color, proportion, and repetition), and other things to do with Lego (such as creating custom building instructions or making games). Interspersed among the chapters are step-by-step instructions for small projects related to the chapter. These projects are well-explained and help solidify the point being made in the text. The author has chosen the examples well, and the inclusion of a myriad of pictures lends descriptive power.

The final two sections of the book differ slightly from the others. The first is called the Brickopedia. This visual encyclopedia of Lego brick shapes/styles gives a lot of information (such as name, part number, and notes for usage) for each listing. The selection of bricks is massive, and yet, by the author's own admission, it contains only a fraction of the total Lego piece catalog. All of the bricks are separated by category, and there is also a section of special Lego elements, which could be very useful in creating new models. The second slightly different chapter details the use of design grids in conceptualizing and designing Lego models by using what are essentially Lego blueprints. A link is provided, so that readers can download and print their own design grids for personal use.

In conclusion, I found that The Unofficial Lego Builder's Guide contains a lot of technical Lego knowledge. While this book may not be the right choice for someone looking to get inspiration for a new model, it should certainly provide them with the techniques for building well-constructed and excellent-looking models. For new Lego builders and experienced designers alike, this book is a worthwhile purchase and a worthy addition to the Lego-building table or bookshelf.

Beautiful and functional how-to book

I loved Legos when I was a kid, and my two boys are no different. One picked up the name "Charlie Legos" from a wrestling coach. So, of course, they ate up The Unofficial Lego Builder's Guide. Charlie loves to create his own Lego structures, so the guide's breakdown of how basic forms are created helped him expand his creative repertoire.

And like all the No Starch Press books I've read, The Guide does a wonderful job of combining words and photographs. It's a beautifully-designed book, and for that reason will appeal to adults as well as children. If you can pry it out of Charlie's hands.
