About the Author
David Glover is a Senior Research Specialist in the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He is the author or co-author of 67 published articles, book chapters and abstracts. Dr Glover's research uses satellite data, model results and shipboard data to elucidate the mechanisms and processes by which the oceans play a major role in the maintenance of the global climate.

William J. Jenkins is a Senior Scientist in the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He has published 84 peer-reviewed journal and book articles. Dr Jenkins is the Director of the National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Facility (NOSAMS). In 1983 he received the Rosenstiel Award in Oceanographic Science from the University of Miami and in 1997 he received the Henry Bryant Bigelow Award in Oceanography from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Dr Jenkins' interests include studying tracers as applied to oceanic physical, chemical, biological and geological processes; air-sea and ice-water exchange of gases; ocean biological productivity and its controls; radiogenic and primordial noble gas isotopes in the sea, atmosphere, lakes, ground waters, sediments and rocks; climatic changes in the ocean and its effects on biogeochemical systems; and radiocarbon and the global carbon cycle in the last 60,000 years.

Scott C. Doney is a Senior Scientist in the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He has authored or co-authored more than 160 peer-reviewed journal and book articles. He was awarded the James B. Macelwane Medal from the American Geophysical Union in 2000 and an Aldo Leopold Leadership Program Fellowship in 2004. He has travelled extensively, lending his expertise to a number of national and international science programs, most recently as inaugural chair of the Ocean Carbon and Biogeochemistry (OCB) program. He has also testified before both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. His research interests include marine biogeochemistry and ecosystem dynamics, ocean acidification, the global carbon cycle, climate change, and the intersection of science and policy.

Excellent, comprehensive

This book covers everything from how to compute a mean, to spatial statistics, to finite difference and numerical integration. It thus provides a thorough introduction to many of the key analytical skills needed by a quantitative marine scientist---or really any Earth System scientist. Significantly, the approach in the book is very much example driven, and accompanied by sample MATLAB scripts; this contributes to the development of students' individual analytical libraries, leaving them with both understanding and capacity. Highly recommended.

I have a PhD in geophysics from Scripps / UCSD. I loved my classes in Inverse Theory there. When I'm processing real data, this is the book I reach for.

Not great, OK-ish for real beginners but hardly worth the time to skim it.

This is NOT A NOVEL. It is not a how-to manual. It is a reasonably thorough, not very deep, pedantic account of some of the bullet points of the history of what magic meant and how it was perceived over the millennia. If I'd been able to get it at my library I would have done so - they didn't have it so I paid for it but now I will donate it to the library so others don't have to pay. The writer is not dreadful but not at all engaging, the material is not original and not even a very thoughtful account, just an assemblage of information. Possibly somewhat useful to real beginners looking for a map of the terrain but it's the magical equivalent of the recipes on the side of the cookie mix box.

Moving, real, funny - wonderful

I loved this book, because it made me laugh and made me cry. It caught me in the throat more than once, as it fully and articulately revealed the challenges of disability and of becoming oneself. Galloway writes with such wit and intelligence and honesty. The prose carries you along and then surprises again and again. It is wonderful. Galloway says stories were the currency of her family. The richness of her own storytelling is evidence that she has indeed prospered from that legacy. Although many chapters stand out in my mind, the final one has lodged itself inside my heart.

Powerful, funny memoir takes a unique personal story and makes it universal

Mean Little deaf Queer is remarkable -- this memoir transmutes Terry Galloway's unique, quirky, anguished, sometimes goofy but nevertheless powerful individual narrative into a larger exploration of the way we tell stories to ourselves and to others in order to construct our places in the world.

Terry as a child experienced moments when she was transported out of her body -- later, she engaged in an elaborate exploration of how to transport herself back into her body, to live in the world as the person she was. At the same time, in theater, she was transported again by the powers of drama and comedy. (There is a passage about performance of Shakespeare in a barn in Texas that magnificently captures such a moment.) The reader will be transported as well.

A word about the prose: Many people who are familiar with Galloway's work in theater, even work that she herself has authored or co-authored, think of her primarily as a performer. Here you get to experience her as a pure writer, finding another channel through which to link her life and wisdom to ours. Her writing is itself a performance -- a high-wire act in which the challenge is not to fall into self-absorbed sentiment on the one side or the glib, easy laugh on the other. Galloway meets that challenge and exceeds it in a way that, again and again, will take your breath away. Her writing is lyrical, precise, and relentlessly expressive.

I've known Terry for about 30 years, so this isn't an objective review. But it is a fair one, because I wouldn't praise a book -- even a friend's book -- unless I thought it deserved praise. Mean Little deaf Queer deserves very high praise indeed.

Half good, half okay...but very real, regardless

I really liked the first half of Terry Galloway's Mean Little deaf Queer, but I found the 2nd half of the book fairly rambling and tedious to get through. I think Ms. Galloway has a ton of great stories to tell, and those that she does tell in full description are funny (not so much laugh out loud funny, perhaps more bemusing) and interesting and really catch the reader's attention. When she goes on her tangents after starting a story and bounces around, it can be somewhat hard to figure out if she's remembering the past or switching her main story or what the heck is going on. I almost felt like the bulk of this memoir was an outline for her to go back and expand upon. I would love to read more stories about her youth and her family as well as her theatre days and all her relationships (tortured and not).

I never felt this was a "pity me" memoir but more, this is how it was, this is my life, this happened, so deal with it. Her honesty with the lowest points in her life and very refreshing insomuch that she didn't wallow in the low points as much as state that they happened.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading about someone's life that is definitely "alternative" (a term she uses a lot). It's not for the faint of heart or the prissy, so if those who get their sensibilities all bent out sort because of the smallest thing probably should pass this book by.

I hope Ms. Galloway writes more and centers her writing on specifics of her life instead of trying to encompass so much in so little space.

He was always elusive, on and off the stand; like his music, he was constantly moving, incessantly changing. Just as Charlie Parker stood astride the jazz world of the late 40s and 50s, so did John Coltrane in the late 50s and 60s.

Trane was a giant of the saxophone and a major composer.  His music also influenced rock and classical musicians, such as Roger McGuinn and David Amram. Many even had their lives changed as a result.

J. C. Thomas traces John Coltrane’s life and career from his North Carolina childhood through his apprenticeship under Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis, culminating in the saxophonist’s classic quartet that played to steadily increasing audiences throughout America, England, and Japan.

The author has drawn on the recollections of those who knew Coltrane best—boyhood friends, band members like Elvin Jones, spiritual mentors like Ravi Shankar, and the women who loved him. Chasin’ The Trane is the story of a man who struggled against drug addiction, studied African and Eastern music and philosophy, admired Einstein’s expanding universe and the shimmering sounds a harp makes, and left behind the enduring legacy of a master musician who was also a beautiful man.

A basic primer

Think of this as the cliff notes edition of the life of John Coltrane. An alternate title could be "I Remember Trane." The book moves quickly over the first part of his life and concentrates mostly on his recording years. The early struggling years that were characterized by drugs is glossed over and pretty much picks up in ernest with his quiting in 1957. The best parts of this easy to read book are the lines attributed to his friends or those that knew him. The insights are clearly evident throughout the book as it is filled with little known tid bits as shared by people who crossed paths with the man. It seems everyone had an opinion or crossed paths with Trane. There are studio recollections, club dates, both on and off stage memories, diary excerpts but most of all reflections on the part of fellow musicians. Some of the encounters are remarkeable, like the time Gato Barbieri, the Argentine saxophonist, met him backstage in Europe and saw the sax case he had sent Coltrane. Coltrane exclaimed "you're from Argentina" and was unaware that Gato was the man who had sent the monographed leather case. The personal recollections make this a memorable book and a quick reference point for further and more detailed reading. The pictures are minimal but historically worthy. I would recommend this book to people who are interested in Coltrane and would like to get some quick and easy insights into the legendary sax great. This is Coltrane 1A, there is ample room for further knowledge, beginning with his music.

Easy reading

This book is easy to read and contains a lot of information but seems a little dated. It clearly illustrates that it was published in the '70s as it includes details of Mr. Coltrane's astrological chart and way over the top comparisions (like John Coltrane and Albert Einstein). This book is also not for cynics - I found myself rolling my eyes more than once at the overly flowery content. I did like that the book spoke of his personal problems in relation to the albums released and how the changes in his life affected his study of music. The best parts of the book are the short quotes from his family and friends.

Buy the Lewis Porter Coltrane Book Instead.

I've owned this book since 1978 when my wife gave it to me as a Christmas present. I think at the time this was the only biography available. Much better biographies have come along since then. If you want to learn about Trane's life AND his music, you want the excellent Lewis Porter biography.

There's interesting stuff in Chasin' the Trane but there are also lots of goofy, silly passages that are sheer flights of fancy on the part of JC Thomas.

The passage where Thomas describes a compassionate Trane handing a couple of winos a ten dollar bill is just plain silly "Hey, that was Trane, handing me a ten when I have a million questions to ask him about music." Gimme a break. The only thing the wino wants to know is where the nearest liquor store is and whether his friend wants Thunderbird or Ripple.

There are also imagined scenes about his practicing and lots of stories about common people who are inspired by Trane who are no more special than you or me, so why do I want to read about them. I suspect some of them are simply friends and acquaintances of Thomas.

The book has several passages that are purely flights of fancy on the part of Thomas - highly speculative at best.

There is scant information about the man's actual music and absolutely NO analysis of Trane's methodology (such as the Giant Steps thirds). If you are a musician, like me, you what you REALLY want Porter's book, it is incredibly detailed with its analysis of Trane's music. You WILL probably learn something reading the Porter book. You can sit and read and follow along with the pieces to get the gist of what Porter is writing about.

Chasin' the Trane - while possibly the 1st Coltrane biography, is really quite trite compared to the Lewis book.

Stories from Shillong told in lyrical Prose

A review of this book in one of the Indian newspapers said that this book is a collection of short stories, all set in the North east of India by a native author. That was enough for me to want to read the book. We hardly ever come across writers from the NE region published in English in publications in the heartland of India. I have heard of writers like Siddhartha Deb and Anjum Hassan when it comes to writings on Shillong but have never managed to read either of them. For me, Janice Pariat is the first author I have read on Shillong and its native people, the Khasis. And it was a rewarding and satisfying read. The stories are mostly told in a reflective mood over the past and the flow is quite smooth. Taken individually, none of the stories seem to stand out and grab you powerfully but still, they are such that you want to read the next one soon after.

All the stories in this collection are set in Shillong, save one. They cover a period of nearly 150 years, starting from the time when Assam was mainly a tea plantation of the British, then the second world war, the turbulent times of the 1970s and 80s when the Khasi people wanted to separate from Assam and have their own state within the Indian Union and then finally to the modern times of social media and cell phones. Ms. Pariat writes English prose with great facility and it is of lyrical quality in many places. The landscape of Shillong about which she writes, the culture and customs of the Khasi people, the distant past in which the stories are set - they are all so revelatory and fresh in perspective. I felt that Ms.Pariat brings Shillong to life as it existed in the 1970s through her stories which are told in the background of the Khasi insurgency for a separate state. I particularly liked the stories '19/87', 'Boats on Land', 'An Aerial View' and 'Laitlum'.

There are passages in some of the stories which captured my attention for their insight, lyrical quality and beauty of expression.

For example, in the story 'Echo Words', a couple suddenly disappear completely and the people of the town get curious and suspicious that they were killed and their bodies buried somewhere in the vicinity of the town. They start digging the marshy ground. The author reflects beautifully: "...I thought, yet perhaps it was precisely because nothing ever happened in this town that we were willing to believe anything. Rumours had given shape to something tangible. The winds here were trapped by the mountains, our words weren't blown away. Instead, they returned to us in strange, distorted echoes, ferocious reflections of ourselves...".

In the story 'Laitlum', a young schoolgirl describes her first ever motorbike ride with a boy as follows: "...So far, I have experienced the world from the security of being on the inside - a car, a book, the judicious guidance of my parents. Cocooned in plastic and metal, in parched pages, within the arms of suffocating love. Everything goes by, scenery and life, unfurling at a safe distance, a flat democratic haze. Being outside is a step away from safety. On a motorbike, the world rushes up at you from all sides, so do the wind and colors of the trees and the sky. You are exposed. The sunshine hits your back, your face, the air flies down your throat, and you are nothing but a single, glorious movement....".

Elsewhere, Ms.Pariat describes the setting sun in Shillong as '..the sun shredded the sky and fell behind the mountains. We watched the clouds bleed..'

This is a promising first book by the author. She is certainly an Indian author in English whose future books I would look out for.

Much more than a ride into India's Northeast

In her debut book, Janice Pariat manages--true to her opening quote--to "find the marvelous real with every step". For the world she conveys is one imbued of thick, liquid meaning, which encompasses mysteries that--we like to think--are no more today. In her stories, the eternal tussle between the known and the unknown reclaims a space where things have ways of reaching towards people, and leave deep affective imprint.
So it is that the unrequested, vexing intrusion of the colonial foreigner can be repelled by "the word". A word that--however--is as powerful as it can be threatening, and drag down with it the very existence of those that utter it. Because the triumph of light over darkness always comes at the risk of complete loss of any point of reference, flushed down the steep waterfall of primeval chaos.
In the confusion engendered by clashes between police and militant groups brandishing arms against an evil other, budding rockstars ride to where the hills are set free, and ponder over the significance of folk tales, which "taught people something about life, and how to live it". This loss of folk tales, and of a magic dimension that lies at the heart of our most authentic experience of the world, finds its expression in periodical outbursts against this or that other; the Nepalis, the Bengalis, the Marwaris, the Muslim or the Assamsese, the ever-changing yet ever-present "dhkar".
Janice Pariat's book rekindles our world with its lost magic, conjuring up--through the gift of an essential, densely gripping prose--tense atmospheres where the other is encountered and hated, rejected, loved and made part of oneself. A book that offers much more than a ride into India's Northeast, but speaks instead to the most ancient part of ourselves. Thoroughly recommended.

Janice Pariat has indeed brought together a collection of short stories that are so different yet so beautiful when read together.

I have read this book quite some time back yet I intentionally held on to myself from writing a review of this book because the amount of emotions that I went through while reading this book was simply unexpected and I wanted to capture each of them. But even after re-reading a couple of stories, I feel oddly unequipped to review this book.

There are fifteen stories in all, starting with ‘A Waterfall of Horses’ and ending with ‘An Aerial View’. While one story tells us about the various struggles between the British and the locals, there’s another that talks about the local superstition. A third story tells as about the various divisions in people, another story tells us about the school life affected by the local political scene. Every time I think about this book I am still surprised by the varied subjects touch by this author - from various myths and legends, to the local beliefs and superstitions of the people at that time, Janice has painted a superb and complete picture of the North East India during the early days of British Raj by including the political, social and cultural scenario of the time.

Telling short stories is a form of art that very few people can master and I for one have only enjoyed O’Henry, Jefferey Archer and Anita Desai so far. Even Jhumpa Lahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies had me in its grip. And now it is Janice Pariat. Though each of these authors are VERY different from each other in almost every aspect, and I am not comparing Janice with these greats… But Janice has clearly made her own space in Short Story world and over the time we may even see her name with the other greats.

About the Author

Graeme Guthrie is a professor in the School of Economics and Finance at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. His research has appeared in the top journals on finance and economics, and as a consultant he has provided advice on a wide variety of issues in relation to agriculture, electricity, gas, real estate, and telecommunications, much of it using real options analysis.

Excellent

This is an excellent book on real option analysis. My major frustration with most real options books is that they read like infomercials, successfully selling the idea that ROA is superior to NPV analysis but then they either never actually get around to telling you how to implement it, or if they do, provide 'cookie cutter' tools that are too inflexible to be useful in analyzing real world projects. What makes this book so good is that it not only covers the theory behind ROA in detail, but it actually shows you how to apply the theory to a wide variety of projects. After reading it I find myself in the pleasant situation of being more than happy to open up my spreadsheet and start modeling real world projects.

All the math in the book is done in discrete time making it a lot more accessible than continuous time books, like the interesting but academic Dixit and Pindyck. Now don't get me wrong, this book is definitely not a read in one sitting airport bookshop finance book. It is quite challenging in parts. But your efforts will be rewarded with an excellent understanding of ROA.
