About the Author
Telford Taylor (1908-1998) graduated from Williams College and Harvard Law School. During World War II he served in Europe as a U.S. Army intelligence officer, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. After the Nuremberg trials, Taylor practiced law in New York City, taught at Columbia Law School and the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law, and published a number of books, including Munich: The Price of Peace, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for best nonfiction work of 1979.

The best book about the Nuremberg trial

I am a former war crimes prosecutor who has taught a course on war crimes, genocide and justice at the university and law school level for 20 years. Taylor's book is, hands down, the best book ever written about the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. I am very glad to see it back in print after nearly 20 years. It is an authoritative, readable and comprehensive account of the IMT by Taylor, the deputy chief prosecutor and one of the most thoughtful commentators of the 20th century on matters of war, crime and justice.

Note, however, that this book deals only with the IMT, not the 12 subsequent cases (doctors, financiers,etc.) that the Americans tried at Nuremberg after the IMT concluded. Too bad, because Taylor was chief of counsel for those trials. He intended to write a second volume about them (at age 85, no less) but never did so.

If you know a lot about the IMT, this will give you new insights. If you will only read one book about the IMT, this is the one.

You don't know the Nuremberg Trials until you read this book.

Mr. Taylor, one of several very bright individuals (attorney) who assisted at the first trial for the highest ranking Nazis who could be found and later as lead prosecutor during trials that followed, produced a flowing, broad account of the scramble to bring this event to the world and to terminate a dreadful and despised organization. Herein is a wealth of facts, observations and asides about the trial and the participants including the effort leading up to the trail to organize and produce the historical event. The awaited overview of the interrogation and rebuttal of each defendant comes later in the book. With so many players and five primary countries the narrative becomes a bit entangled and confusing in spots but nothing that slows the pace. To that point creating a list of the individuals as they appear would help to keep the record straight as the story advances. An unprecedented event such as this was not without regular pitfalls for the Allies, the Americans to a greater degree, which Mr.Taylor openly recalls. This is very much the story and not a technical rendition of the trial so proceedings, the exchanges between attorneys and judges, are easily understood. For those of casual interest the more than 700 pages will likely be excessive but if you are are looking for one entertaining, end to end treatment of this event, from the humanistic to the legal and political, you may not do better than this book. The one regret is that Mr. Taylor did not produce a similar account for later trials.

Detailed, well balanced, well written.

This is quite a long book that gives a detailed exposition of the events of the initial 21 or so cases at Nuremberg. Taylor participated at a high level. He is a distinguished author and scholar.
This covers not only description of the cases, but gives insights into all the main personalities present, including Goering and Jackson. It is written nearly 50 years after the event, so interesting information on what happened in the years afterward is given as well.
Taylor writes well, gives his own opinions in a balanced way and does not back off from sensative issues. And they don't come much more sensative than this.
Strongly recommended.

Every chapter took me back there!

I had the opportunity to spend a week in Canada, north of the Quetico area and every chapter in "Listing Point" took me back there.
Each chapter is about sights, sounds, and memories tied in with his Listening Point, the rocky point on the northern Minnesota lake on which Olson built his cabin. I enjoyed this book very much.
The book is a mixture of northwoods history, philosophy, and nature writing. His descriptions of nature around him are done in such a way that you get a real feeling for the grand scale of the northwoods, and how time, in nature, means something different than it does to most of us most of the time. Be aware, it is not some action packed adventure. Rather it is a quiet, calm book which causes you to sit back and reflect, even if you are not an outdoorsman.
As each chapter stands on its own, it makes great reading at lunch or before bed. The chapter called Canada Jack is a favorite and Far Horizons, the last chapter, is an artistic statement of the whole theme of the book.

Not Just a Biology Teacher from Minnesota

Sigurd Olson wrote better than most people about the great northwoods covering the area of Canada and the North U.S. between Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the U.P. His focus was the Lake Superior/Quetico country, and he carefully catalogues everything from the geological substrate, to the soil, to the plants and trees, the animals, the waters, and the canoes he paddles over them. Open this book and he's the Swedish guy pulling his canoe up on a favorite ledge of rock, taking a carefully measured sip of some brandy, and cooking a few fish to have with some coffee, all the while describing the sky, the traces of various minerals on the rocks, and then turning in for the night.
There are many such gentlemen of the North, but it seems like they are hard to get to know. Olson (typically pictured on his books in a clean crew-cut and pressed Khaki or woolen shirt) does us the courtesy of introducing himself with his measured observations of the country he explored for so many years between time spent teaching biolgy at a community college in Ely, Minnesota.
Listening Point was his place to return to from his various travels, and from his usual home in Ely. He describes both the physical dimensions and actions needed to build it (how big a cabin, which direction to face and why, how the bulldozer made teh road, how certain boulders and trees were moved or destroyed), always with references to the wider dimensions of the North, and the great Cambrian shelf all along the North of Lake Superior. His style is partly in the mode of the serial "digressions" which fit around a theme, seen in many classical writers (pre-medieval, Roman & Greek). Paired with the physical descriptions are the theoretical meditations on which modern appliances to have, and which to exclude, for the spiritual benefit of he and his wife (telephone, no; phonograph, yes).
The natural impression from all of this is to want to find your own Listening Point somewhere, or at least to get up to this area to see the things he writes about. The broader message here is that you don't have to own the places you explore, and the places you adopt as your own, to appreciate the tremendous beauty and stunning scale of our great northwoods. This is something easy to take for granted for those who live in this part of the U.S. Actually, there is nothing else in the entire world like our Great Lakes, and the only forest area on the globe comparable to the U.S./Canada Northwoods is an area of Siberia. That's it. And this man is an excellent guide to it. Although limited in his writing to a kind of transcendentalist Thoreau-style of abstruse maybe-theism, Olson's writing nevertheless addresses the spirit with great force. He achieves a connection with the old Indian belief systems, and reaches congruence with an explicit Christian worldview at least insofar as he expresses great reverence for a creation which dwarfes the hubris of mere man.
Interestingly, this book, as well as his others, I find to be more readable when back in the Chicago area, or on trips elsewhere. When up in those very woods, he's more of a guide to something new to find for yourself, rather than limiting yourself to retracing exactly what he thought while in those woods before his death several decades ago. And he's needed, as these woods fill up with people very unlike the Swedish old-timers with their carefully contained, respectful way of quietly going about their business.

Sigurd Olson made an incredible impact on the preservation of our natural resources. His love of wild places, river ways and lakes, the land, flora and fauna inspired him to write about his passion and strive to protect and preserve those very places he loved. "Listening Point" introduced me to Sigurd Olson and my life as a naturalist/preservationist and conservationist. Olson stated it best in this inspiring book:
“Though the point was only a small point of the vastness reaching far to the arctic from it I could survey the whole. While it would be mine for only a short time this glaciated shore with its twisted trees and caribou moss would grow into my life and into the lives of all who shared it with me...
I named this place Listening Point because only when one comes to listen, only when one is aware and still, can things be seen and heard.

Lisa Evans was trained as an actor at the Guildhall School of Speech and Drama. Now an award winning playwright, she was Resident Writer at Theatre Centre in 1983/4 and at Temba Theatre Company in 1986/7 and is currently Associate Writer at Theatre by the Lake, Keswick. Lisa has won numerous awards including the British Theatre Association Award 1986 & 1998, and was a finalist for the John Whiting Award in 2006. Lisa also writes for radio and television.

Disparate, often chaotic programs for home care, which allowed needy, elderly, and disabled people to avoid institutionalization, historically paid poverty wages to the African American and immigrant women who constituted the majority of the labor force. Yet policymakers and welfare administrators linked discourses of dependence and independence-claiming that such jobs would end clients' and workers' "dependence" on the state and provide a ticket to economic independence. The history of home care illuminates the fractured evolution of the modern American welfare state since the New Deal and its race, gender, and class fissures. It reveals why there is no adequate long-term care in America.

Caring for America is much more than a history of social policy, however; it is also about a powerful contemporary social movement. At the front and center of the narrative are the workers-poor women of color-who have challenged the racial, social, and economic stigmas embedded in the system. Caring for America traces the intertwined, sometimes conflicting search of care providers and receivers for dignity, self-determination, and security. It highlights the senior citizen and independent living movements; the civil rights organizing of women on welfare and domestic workers; the battles of public sector unions; and the unionization of health and service workers. It rethinks the strategies of the U.S. labor movement in terms of a growing care work economy. Finally, it makes a powerful argument that care is a basic right for all and that care work merits a living wage.

Me gusto mucho esta novela vemos como el amor nunca se olvida y que la vida nos da segunda oportunidades. Declan tuvo que renunciar al amor de su vida que era Savannah. Savannah había establecido un negocio de niñera de vacaciones muy exitosas. Declan solicita sus servicios y ella se da con tremenda sorpresa cuando va a la entrevista inicial. Acepta con la condición de no recordar nada de su amor pasado pero las circunstancias y los sentimientos a floran a flor de piel. Cuestionandole a Savannah se la historia se puede volver a repetir pero lo que ella no sabe que la vida da sorpresa y que su sacrificio será recompensado. 100 % recomendable

Great technical manual for matchmoving

The product description was a little vague about which matchmove programs are discussed and used as illustrations. If you are new to matchmoving or thinking about it, you have probably done some checking around on the software products that are out there. Rest assured that SynthEyes (a more popular program) is discussed and used in many illustrations. Other programs are discussed as well. This book is not easy reading. It is a serious technical book that explains how these programs work and why they fail and how to fix or avoid matchmove failures.

Try to take this with patience

Match moving is the keystone to create the best illusions in moving picture, and it is almost not recognized outside the VFX community. This book is not for the enthusiast, is for the PRO. And no matter how many books you read, the only way to master match moving is doing actual matching with real world footage.

If I have sounded like an equivocal admirer of Messud's until now, let me hereby announce my full conversion to fandom with her latest novel,The Woman Upstairs. For one thing, it is something none of her other fiction has been, which is an absolute page-turner, from its grab-you-by-the-collar opening--"How angry am I? You don't want to know. Nobody wants to know about that"--to its final rumination on the creative uses of anger: "a great boil of rage like the sun's fire in me." For another, it may well be the first truly feminist (in the best, least didactic sense) novel I have read in ages--the novel candid about sex and the intricacies of female desire that Virginia Woolf hoped someone would write, given a room and income of her own. The Woman Upstairs takes on, at full throttle, the ways in which women are socialized into being accomodating "nice girls" and the ruthlessness--the "myopia"--that is necessary to pursue artistic ambition. It shows Claire Messud at the height of her considerable powers, articulating the quandary of being alive and sentient, covetous and confused in the twenty-first century. Whistling to Our Graves

Most of the reviews of the book are overly harsh or overly praising. It's a pretty good book, and as some have complained, with sections that are a little drawn out and repetitive.

The criticism I think that is without merit is that the character isn't likable. The character is an accurate human portrait and if any of us were laid to bare the way this character honestly expresses her feelings and thoughts, I think we too would be less than likable.

Years ago I heard this woman explain an entire attitude of certain women as the ``smugly married." It's easy to look down your nose at her if you have all the adornments of female success, the most important of which is that someone has found you sexually desirable enough to marry you. And once you have children, the deal is sealed. You are woman, hear you roar!

But if you got overly fussy, maybe thought something better was coming, or there was a split or almost no suitors and the shadows grow long on the dock, you do sense that you will probably never marry and most certainly now, never have children. This is of course the reality for Nora, the now spinster school teacher, whose mother who loved her is dead and whose aging father needs her. Nora is the utility person. Life's bat boy. The filler of water bottles and cleaner of equipment but never gets to play the game. The center of no one's life but the agent of many lives. A person of talent unexpressed and un-honed which time will turn to mediocrity because it was simply never developed. A person so inconsequential that those she thinks are closest to her will humiliate her if it serves their own ends. And she's angry because now she knows all this with certainty.

Naturally, she has lied to herself about this truth. It's called coping. And this is where the writer I think advances beyond a lot of readers. We all lie to ourselves about some critical truth in our lives. Unless you have caught yourself in some lie on which your identity stands, and then have had some unexpected circumstance bring you right up against that lie so powerfully that it can literally knock you to your knees, you may simply lack the experience to fully appreciate this book. A lot of people don't like the book I think because most of us just keep whistling right to the grave.

Stunning, smart, savvy. Left me gasping!

"The Woman Upstairs," by Claire Messud, is a first rate psychological thriller that will keep readers spellbound, in the style of a classic Hitchcock film, right up until the final pages, where a stunning twist illuminates and clarifies the whole. This is a very smart, savvy novel--one that provides sustained story telling, literary, and intellectually pleasure. In fact, it is one of the best books I've reviewed all year.

The plot and characters are brilliantly constructed, the whole fully believable to the smallest psychological detail. Massud is a master storyteller and a fastidious psychological stylist. She's also an exquisite writer. Reading this book is like taking a temporary journey inside the mind of the main character, Nora Eldridge. Readers will emerge gasping at the end, fully comprehending the character they've inhabited and the trajectory of her life.

Nora Eldridge is like a lot of middle-aged people. She believes she is living a lie. She thought she'd grow up to be a famous artist, to have a loving husband, and children. But she finds herself at forty trapped in the ordinary life of a spinster third-grade teacher. She sees herself as the invisible "woman upstairs" living a life of "quiet desperation," a woman with occasional unremarkable boyfriends and a few close girlfriends--a woman stuck in the role of being a moral citizen and a dutiful daughter.

The book starts at the end, when Nora is 42 and fully enraged at life. She is so full of anger that she is bound and determined to break out of the confines of her middling existence and finally start living an authentic life. Most of the balance of the book takes us back five years, to 2004, the year Nora meets and falls in love with each member, individually, of the Shahid family. Nora first falls in love with Reza, one of her new third-grade students. He's everything she wished her own child might have been. Next, she falls in love with Reza's mother, Sirena. She is Italian and an installation artist who has already attracted significant international fame. Sirena is everything Nora wished she could be. Finally, Nora falls in love with Skandar, Reza's father and Sirena's husband. He is Lebanese and participating in a one-year fellowship at Harvard to complete a book on history and ethics. He is someone who is sincerely interesting in just being with Nora and talking with her. He is the type of man Nora would have wanted to marry.

For that whole academic year, Nora's daily life is tied intimately to each member of the Shahid family. It is a year in which she is awash in love, a year in which she feels wholly "alive in the moment, a Sleeping Beauty awakened." It is a year in which she finally feels she is living an authentic life. "Oh great adventure! Life there, before me, the infinite banquet lying in wait."

But as we close this book, we ask ourselves: what was real and what was a lie? In fact, we find ourselves contemplating the very nature of reality itself.

The book is a thriller because there is something not quite right about the obsessive nature of Nora's love for Sirena, Reza, and Skandar. It's an all-consuming, compelling, and compulsive love, something very close to the murky mental illness territory of obsessive love, yet still balanced precariously, on the edge of normal. Readers are kept in a high state of tension fearing that somehow, Nora is going to step over the line, that something will go horribly wrong. And it does! But it is nothing that any reader would ever expect.

The twist at the end of this novel is a very real unraveling and unveiling of the complexity of life. There is nothing gimmicky about it. No, this is as authentic as it gets. Finally, you will understand Nora's rage...and perhaps, absolve her.

But understanding the deep psychological intricacies of this story is only half the pleasure. This book provides considerable intellectual depth and thematic richness. Not only will readers be left pondering the nature of reality and asking: What is reality? What is an authentic life? Is reality purely subjective? Readers will also be left contemplating a number of substantial ethical and philosophical questions. What is love? What is friendship? Is Nora right when she states: "The hubris of it, thinking I could be a decent human being and a valuable member of family and society, and still create! Absurd."

I hope you will choose to discover and experience this magnificent cerebral thriller for yourself. If this review has piqued your interest, I assure you that you will not be disappointed. "The Upstairs Woman" deserves every one of its five stars.

An "Un" Review of "The Woman Upstairs"...

After reading through the reviews that have been posted before mine for "The Woman Upstairs" I find myself more compelled to tell potential readers of this book who should NOT read it, instead of who should.

The extraordinary Claire Messud's book will absolutely not benefit from a plot summary. It is a book that allows it's protagonist to introduce herself to you in a completely tantalizing way. Nora Eldridge will tell you everything that you need to know in short order. She is a fascinating character drawn with the fine brush and exquisite materials of a very elegant artist. Nora fancies herself an artist, and indeed, reading "The Woman Upstairs" is very much like standing in front of a beautiful, intricate, and extremely interesting painting, in an art museum. You may even want to sit down as you spend a preternatural amount of time staring at this magnificent piece...studying how the fine paint thickens in some areas and the colors resonate. You are imagining peeling back layers and layers until you have unfurled more and more of the work to find all of the hidden meaning that the artist has intended.

If you are someone that must "like" or identify with the characters in the books that you choose...don't choose this one. Nora is one of the most finely textured and unique figures in literature that you will ever meet. You will not understand her, love her, or warmly identify with her. I can't imagine why you would need to. She is a work of fine art, with a very sharp edge.

If you are adverse to learning about different and interesting art mediums...avoid this one. If you don't like paying very close attention to painstakingly well created, multi cultural, and nuanced characters, that have histories that are centered on real international events, and historical art figures who rocked the pop culture of their days...avoid this one. If you like tidy endings that don't leave you with the sense that something even more profound probably occurred...avoid this one. Messud creates an almost interactive exercise for the reader with her ending. If you don't appreciate carefully plotted but subtle psychological drama...leave this one alone.

This is wordy, erudite, and probably the best book of the year so far. But it is not an easy read. So tread very carefully...I just can't tell you any more, because I could not live with myself if I ruined this amazingly well crafted piece for any of you that are serious readers. This is literary fiction at it's very finest. But it requires a reader who is up to the task. If you are willing, you are about to embark on one of the most mercurial and profound reading experiences of your reading life.
