Monday Morning Leadership ROCKS at our School!!!

Monday Morning Leadership...

Our school has been a part of Monday Morning Leadership for Kids since it's inception. The concepts in MML for Kids are life lessons that apply to all age levels. A school can use the book in so many ways...it is endless. Many of our classrooms have incorportated the story into daily activities. For example, on Mondays, the teacher and students read/review the story. Each student is taught how to be a GOOD DRIVER OF HIS/HER CHARACTER. The students actually have a driver's license and keys for reemphasis of the lessons in the story. Our students really relate to Baxter as he talks to Paw Paw. The teachers have used ideas from the website in his/her classroom. Check it out on CornerstoneLeadership.com. This book is such a neat idea for any school. The illustators are kid-friendly and so beautiful. We are just so excited about teaching kids to be LEADERS today and in our future! This book is aligned with David Cottrell's adult book, Monday Morning Leadership. Check them both out...They are fabulous!

Great book for teaching vocabulary & language concepts

This unique book provides an excellent platform for teaching positive character traits. Paw Paw and Baxter exemplify a loving relationship where the grandfather is willing to teach and the grandson is willing to learn. It is a heartwarming story that is full of vocabulary that a speech pathologist can use for building language skills. The story is appropriate for use in a group setting or individually. The detailed illustrations are exceptional, offering a tool for teaching descriptive concepts and verbs. I will definitely include this book in my therapy toolbox.

Wonderful book for character education and behavior system

This amazing book was written about Paw Paw teaching Baxter life lessons. The lessons can be utilized in a classroom, counselor character guidance lessons, or parents can benefit from reading and discussing the book with their children. The conversations between Paw Paw and Baxter help young Baxter to see that our choices matter. The beautiful illustrations are vivid and detailed. I particularly love Paw Paw's old truck and the old 1892 Bearville Bank building. This book is a treasure and valuable to any person who has young people in their lives.

Well-balanced and vividly theatrical "Boheme"

Looking for a good, moderately priced recording of "Boheme"? This is it. Schipper's conducts a delightfully theatrical performance. The young Freni is ideal: fresh and touching as Mimi should be. Gedda has a lighter, more youthful sound than Pavarotti or Bjoerling, and makes an excellent match for Freni. Good stereo sound. Excellent supporting cast: Sereni a charming, youthful Marcello. Other sets have great casts and great conductors (and you may want to augment your collection with Beecham's classic recording and Kleiber's live La Scala performance, but this one is a perfect introductory "Boheme", with its user-friendly book and libretto. Beautiful.

Beautiful Book with Fine Recording

I bought this book and CD set a few years ago to learn the opera LA BOHEME. The beautifully illustrated book includes a history of the opera and of Puccini's career, a clearly printed libretto in Italian and English, and information on the conductor and the principal singers. The recording is a fine one, dominated by the partnership of Nicolai Gedda and Mirella Freni as Rodolfo and Mimi. Gedda has a firm, pure tenor and a delightful sense of humor too often missing from portrayals of Rodolfo. I also like his sad sigh in the last act just before Mimi dies: it's a refreshing change from the outright weeping usually heard at this point in the opera. Freni lights up the performance with her luminous, youthful lyric soprano. The supporting cast are all-Italian and make a good team, and Maestro Thomas Schippers paces the opera nicely. This book and CD set is a wonderful bargain for anyone wanting to learn LA BOHEME. Check out the other Black Dog Opera Library sets, too.

A book for lookin, not for cookin

Leading chefs of australia lend their recipes to this book, and it shows. Many are complex and none of this would be on your average aussie menu, not even at good restaurants would you find the sort of haute cuisine shown in this book.

The recipes in this book are hard to replicate for the normal home cook, things like duck egg pasta, a multitude of dishes with lobster and yabbies (I have never seen these available anywhere but in the outback), buffalo, urchins and pheasant? are requied for many of the recipes. Even the techniques are ridiculous, there are 4 recipes for filled pasta, terrines, a recipe requiring 6 individual shepards pies (as a side!) and the four dances which will take you hours.

The redeeming features are the deserts, some beautifully simple and tasty treats like pavlova, cheesecake, pumpkin scones and pan boiled quinces. All of these turn out wonderfully but are not enough to save this book.

Overall though, this book is just not practical and is nothing like the other books of 'the food of' books, it stands alone as more of a showcase to Australian fusion and leading chefs of the country. I recommend both versions of Australia the beautiful cookbook, one shows more simple fusion and the other is very traditional with things like lamingtons, damper, lamb stews and roasts.

Michael Trimble, Emeritus Professor of Behavioural Neurology, Institute of Neurology, London

Michael Trimble is emeritus professor of Behavioural Neurology at the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London. His research for many years has been on the behavioural consequences of neurological disorders, especially epilepsy and movement disorders. He has a lifelong research interest in neuroanatomy, hence his ability to explore the neuroanatomical basis of crying. However, he is also a psychiatrist with much clinical experience of mood disorders, and had investigated the latter in patients using neurological techniques, such as brain imaging. He is the author of The Soul in the Brain (Johns Hopkins, 2007).

Rather muddled

I am a layperson with a great interest in the emotions, and some small knowledge of the subject. Michael Trimble's book gives a great deal of information about the structure of the brain -- how the amygdala connects to the hippocampus and the like -- but it was over my head. That's not a criticism, exactly. Perhaps the book was aimed at a more knowledgeable audience or perhaps I didn't try hard enough. Still, I was disappointed.

More to the point, I found his discussions of Nietzsche and aesthetics to be muddled and not well connected to his material on the brain. And since his subject was the evolutionary development of some emotions, like sorrow, he should certainly have discussed the work of John Tooby and Leda Cosmides. To speak of the functions and mechanics of emotion without discussing Jaak Panksepp and Paul Ekman and quite a few others is not a good thing. Also, Professor Trimble makes many statements that are mere assertions. He says, for instance, that art was "initially of a religious nature." (p. 130.) Oh?

After reading the book, I felt I did not know any more about why humans like to cry than I did before.

a disappointment

Large print and a very broad sweep make for a quite slim volume. As a layman, I can't speak to Trimble's handling of neuroanatomy, but his reading of Tragedy and the arts is an absolute trainwreck. Confused arguments with a lot of unsupported claims, and weird disconnect between the discussion of evolution/neuroscience and Tragedy. This latter relies on a rudimentary understanding of Nietzsche as a guiding light throughout. For anyone who is at all familiar with the material on hand, this illuminates very little.

I'm sure Trimble's work in neuroanatomy justifies publication with OUP, but this is a bit of an embarrassment.

About the Author
Kerry Emanuel is Professor of Atmospheric Science in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Science at MIT. He is the author of Divine Wind: The History and Science of Hurricanes and Atmospheric Convection. In May 2006 he was named one of Time magazine's "Time 100: The People Who Shape Our World." A Republican, he has made it clear that he disagrees with his party on climate change.

Short, Clear and Thoughtful

I read many books on climate change when I was researching my own. This is the best I've found on the essential science of climate change. Dr. Kerry Emanuel is a first-rate (MIT) climate scientist who is properly skeptical of his own field. He writes clearly and concisely, and this is an extremely short book. Here are some hints of what is in the chapters and what's new in this edition.

Chp. 1. The myth of natural stability: The earth's climate has been extremely variable - "snowball earth" and "giant trees near the North Pole." The greenhouse effect explains a lot about this.

Chp. 2. Greenhouse physics: Without the greenhouse effect, the earth would be about 0 degrees, not 60. Without air currents, it would be about 85 degrees.

Chp. 3. Why the climate problem is difficult: Clouds. Also, natural variation is so large that it takes about 30 years to detect the human contribution. "The lack of appreciable global warming over the first decade of the current millennium is, ... entirely consistent with ... warming" [this is new].

Chp. 4. Determining humanity's influence: There are two ways, the actual temperature record and computer models. A good explanation of the problems of models, and why they're likely good enough. (Too bad the graph still only goes up to 2000.)

Chp. 5. The consequences: Yes, there are benefits. The negatives: (1) Three to 7 degrees warming and more over land, (2) sea level rise, (3) more frequent strong hurricanes, (4) more flooding and drought, (5) ocean already 30% more acidic [new and important].

Chp. 6. Communicating science: Some IPCC findings and a critique of how, "In their quest to publish the drama of competing dogmas, the media largely ignore mainstream scientists."

Chp. 7. Our options: (1) Mitigation - conservation, alternative energy, capturing carbon, (2) adaptation, (3) geoengineering - a last resort. This chapter is new and adds little.

Chp. 8. The politics: Largely a plea for Republicans to be reasonable; Emmanual has been a Republican most of his life. Also, "Climate research has been a victim of a disturbing phenomenon: the use of advanced marketing techniques to discredit scientific findings." This chapter is much stronger than in the first edition.

The interest of the book is in its scientific explanations and its perspective on how science works and how politics gets in the way of our making use of it.

I have only one small complaint. Chapter 3 tells us that doubling atmospheric CO2 (all else held constant) would raise the average surface temperature by about 1.9°F (up from 1.4°F in the first edition). But no estimate is given for the full effect when all else is not held constant. That crucial "climate sensitivity" is usually put at 5.4°F (3°C) and Emanuel explains clearly such a value is mainly due to positive feedbacks from water vapor and clouds.

He implies that water vapor is well understood, so what is the impact of doubling CO2 if only the water vapor feedback is taken into account? That would tell us how much is riding on the models of clouds that Emanuel tells us are so uncertain. I'm looking forward to the third edition.

PS. James Hansen is better on paleoclimate science.

Brief and Superb Explanation

Dr. Emanuel does a superb job of separating the wheat from the chaff in this little gem. It's virtually impossible for the average layman to separate conspiracy theory nonsense from fear-mongering reading most books and popular press articles on global warming. But Emanuel presents a sound authoritative analysis of what we really do and don't know.
Unlike many other books on global warming, which bury the reader with a plethora of out-of-context quotes, tables of data, and cherry-picked charts, Emanuel presents just enough solid data for the reader to understand the whole issue.
He covers the philosophic underpinnings of different views, the history of global warming, the science, and finally the politics. When put together in this fashion, readers will educate themselves properly.
Before reading this book, I spent months and months reading peer reviewed scientific journal articles, web-site after web-site, and many popular press articles. Had I read Dr. Emanuel's book sooner I could have obtained the same final position with much less work and time invested.

Be forewarned this is a very small book: 82 pages of text, one B&W figure and no references. On a typical page I counted 120 words. I spotted no typos. I found only one sentence where I thought the physical explanation was muddled. The text could provide an excellent narration to a video documentary. A typical citizen needing to get wise about the physics of global warming might be better served by something more than a book without graphics.

Nevertheless, the book is a very quick read and professionals in this field may still enjoy scouring the pages of this book to find out where Professor Emanuel stands on certain issues. I got my money's worth on page 67 where we can read: "Scientists are most effective when they provide sound, impartial advice, but their reputation for impartiality is severely compromised by the shocking lack of political diversity among American academics, who suffer from the kind of group-think that develops in cloistered cultures. Until this profound and well-documented intellectual homogeneity changes, scientists will be suspected of constituting a leftist think tank."

15 of the 82 pages are not Prof. Emanuel's words, but is an "Afterword" provided by other authors. These words carry less authority. For example, the Afterword attributes the melting of the snows of Kilimanjaro to global warming, but some recent scientific research implicates land use changes around Kilimanjaro.

The Afterword also lays out a plan to save us from global warming, with a claim that "addressing global warming could be relatively painless". Here is the plan: "the United States and other industrial economies reduce their emissions by three percent per year between now and mid-century" which will ultimately "reduce global emissions by 75 percent or more". Some of the means to do this provide a chuckle: "driving less aggressively". No account is made for global population growth and global ambitions for prosperity.

About the Author
Miloš Macholán is a senior scientist and head of the Laboratory of Mammalian Evolutionary Genetics at the Institute of Animal Physiology and Genetics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, and Professor of Zoology at Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. He is a recipient of the Otto Wichterle Award for outstanding young scientists.

Stuart J. E. Baird is Associate Professor at the Research Centre for Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO), University of Porto, Portugal, and Chargé de Recherche (première classe), INRA, France. He has studied hybridisation on four continents and his current research interests include spatial genetics, speciation and inference from genomic data.

Pavel Munclinger is head of the Department of Zoology at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. He teaches molecular ecology and evolutionary genetics and is particularly interested in mouse transposons and hybrid zones.

Jaroslav Piálek is a senior scientist at the Institute of Vertebrate Biology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Brno. He has developed dozens of wild-derived house mouse strains to study the evolution of genetic incompatibilities at incipient stages of speciation in two European mouse subspecies.
