Day and Section Hikes Pacific Crest Trail: Southern California, by David Money Harris

The Pacific Crest Trail was designated as one of the first National Scenic Trails way back in 1968. As it traverses the “high road” from Mexico to Canada, incredible views are not only commonplace but also uniquely diverse, because the trail connects six of North America’s seven eco-zones. The PCT’s familiar, well-worn path is a special place for hikers from all walks of life on walks of all lengths and for all reasons.

Instead of guiding you through the arduous task of hiking the entire PCT, the goal of this book is to help you plan trips that incorporate hiking on the PCT in Southern California, whether you have just an afternoon to spare or you want to escape for the entire weekend.

Carefully edited maps and elevation graphs generated with GPS data collected by the author on the trail will help make your trip a success.

This cargo-pocket guide offers author-tested advice to help you make the most of your time away from civilization, however long (or short) that stretch may be.

Enjoy America's Premier Long Distance Trail this Weekend
By Fritz R. Ward
During the annual two weeks of torment known as "testing," I took an hour out of my classroom routine to show my students, all 5th graders, a compilation of photos and short videos from last year's (2011) crop of Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) hikers. My students were quite intrigued. Coming from a poor urban environment, few have been exposed to wilderness activities, and for most the thought of hiking over 2,000 miles was a completely new concept. "Did you note," I asked them, "that almost all the hikers in this video were right out of college or just retired? Why do you think that is?" I got varied answers but finally had to point out to them that essentially, only people who are healthy and have lots of free time can devote 5 to 6 months just to hiking a single trail. For the rest of us, with jobs, children, and other contingencies in life, hiking a long distance trail is mostly fantasy. But you don't have to do the whole thing either. You can still experience some of the majesty and beauty of America's premier hiking trail on a nice day trip or over a weekend, and David Money Harris's new book can show you how.

Let's face it; not every mile of the 2,650 that make up the PCT is equally scenic. Some stretches of trail are much nicer than others, and in some places one can make great loop hikes by taking the trail and then veering off on other established trails in a region. This collection of hikes will show you were these loops are possible and also direct you to other stretches of the trail that deserve a quick out and back excursion. Those with the resources to do a longer backpack trip (and who can arrange cars at each end of a stretch of trail) will also find in these pages some longer weekend point to point hikes. In all, this book presents a very balanced selection of hikes, some of which are easy enough to take small children on, and others of which will challenge any weekend warrior. In all, it represents a very nice effort.

Harris's book is divided into five chapters, each covering roughly one major mountain range in southern California. From the San Diego backcountry to the southern Sierra (south of Mt. Whitney), you should be able to find several hikes among the 31 described here to suit your abilities. You will also find a wide variety of destinations. I have a personal preference for mountain summits and while I have hiked most of the routes found in this book, some sections of trail deserve repeated visits. I strongly recommend the hikes to Garnet Peak, Cougar Crest, Eagle Rock, Mt. Baden Powell, and Skinner Peak. Every hike in the book includes round trip mileage (one way for shuttle trips) and a "star rating" system (one to five) on everything from scenery to difficulty and chance for solitude. A well written route description, sketch map, elevation profiles, and GPS coordinates for trail heads and points of interest rounds out every suggested hike found in these chapters. In all, this is a well written and well organized book.

So, besides the features outlined above, are there any other compelling reasons to buy this book? Well, yes. The author is donating all profits from this publication to the Pacifc Crest Trail Association (PCTA), and this is an organization worthy of support. PCTA maintains the PCT, and many other miles of trail. Just this summer I met PCT volunteers busy clearing literally hundreds of downed trees from the trails around Devil's Postpile National Monument. These volunteers managed, over the course of several long days, to clear more miles of trail than a professional trail crew could expect to maintain in the course of a long summer. And their work was not just confined to the PCT. Day hikers and backpackers of all backgrounds benefited from their efforts and the author is to be commended for his generous donation to this incredible organization.

After showing my kids the video of the 2011 hike, I noted to them that they are all 11 years away from graduating from college. And I am 11 years away from retirement. I asked how many would like to join me then for a long distance hike on the PCT and was pleasantly surprised by 15 immediate volunteers. Who knows if that will ever pan out. As one of my friends pointed out, this would make for a great reality TV show. But in the meantime, I plan to continue hiking short sections of this wonderful trail, and using the resources of Harris's latest book to help me do so.

The Best Source of information for what the title says
By Monty Tam
I have hiked 13,000 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail. I live on the trail and live on it litterally 6 months out of the year. I know the trail and know, for fact, this is the best source and best written source ever for exactly what the title says. The contents include more than just walking along the PCT and how to get to various trailheads. It includes numerous side hikes and tidbits of history about the various areas............plus much more. I rate this book 6 star and add one more for David Money Harris's dedication to helping hikers in more than just his great research and writing.

Not what we thought it would be
By Tashpoint0
My husband bought this thinking it would have actual PCT hikes, just sectionalized. He was disappointed to find out that most hikes just crossed the trail or else a small section was along the trail before veering off. He was looking for a book that would focus on the PCT only.

The Politics of Authoritarian Rule (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics), by Milan W. Svolik

What drives politics in dictatorships? Milan W. Svolik argues authoritarian regimes must resolve two fundamental conflicts. Dictators face threats from the masses over which they rule - the problem of authoritarian control. Secondly from the elites with whom dictators rule - the problem of authoritarian power-sharing. Using the tools of game theory, Svolik explains why some dictators establish personal autocracy and stay in power for decades; why elsewhere leadership changes are regular and institutionalized, as in contemporary China; why some dictatorships are ruled by soldiers, as Uganda was under Idi Amin; why many authoritarian regimes, such as PRI-era Mexico, maintain regime-sanctioned political parties; and why a country's authoritarian past casts a long shadow over its prospects for democracy, as the unfolding events of the Arab Spring reveal. Svolik complements these and other historical case studies with the statistical analysis on institutions, leaders and ruling coalitions across dictatorships from 1946 to 2008.

Review
"The Politics of Authoritarian Rule is a very important contribution to political science. The book provides much-needed theoretical microfoundations to a growing, but still scattered, literature on authoritarianism. It is based on superb empirical work. Above all, it is the product of Svolik's first-rate analytical mind working at its best."
Carles Boix, Princeton University

"In the nascent literature on the political economy of dictatorship, The Politics of Authoritarian Rule stands out. Few scholars know as much about authoritarianism as does Milan Svolik, and that rich knowledge informs every model and empirical test here. Anybody who wants to know (and who doesn't?) why dictators behave as they do should read this book."
Scott Gehlbach, University of Wisconsin

"In this superb book, Milan Svolik convincingly argues that authoritarian politics are the result of two critical conflicts: one between the ruler and the ruled, and the other among the ruling elites, both characterized by the fundamental problems of credible commitment and the ready availability of repression. This is a sophisticated, rigorous, and nuanced analysis that transforms our thinking about both the varieties of authoritarian rule and the underpinnings of authoritarian durability."
Anna Grzymala-Busse, University of Michigan

"Milan Svolik's book is a valuable and wide-ranging contribution to the emerging body of research on authoritarian regimes. Combining formal game-theoretic models, analysis of original cross-national datasets and an impressive array of short illustrative case-studies, he gives new insights into many of the key questions which occupy scholars of comparative authoritarianism. He does so from a parsimonious and powerful theoretical standpoint."
CEU Political Science Journal

The most comprehensive study on authoritarian regimes in print
By Clinton_Hill
Svolik cogently lays out a unified theoretical framework that allows political scientists to first identify key actors and sources of political conflict in dictatorships and then to understand the intricate bases for significant variation in policies, institutions, and regime stability/leadership change across such regimes.

What is truly groundbreaking about this work is that it utilizes large-N studies, single case studies, game theory, and qualitative analyses to propose a *unified* theory of dictatorship. Logically coherent and relatively easy to read, this book deserves to become the authoritative source on the study of authoritarian regimes.

I'm not happy about all details of authors' methodology, but the book content - is among the best pieces of political studies outcomes, based on more or less universal criterions.

Four Great Histories: Henry IV Part I, Henry IV Part II, Henry V, and Richard III (Dover Thrift Editions), by William Shakespeare

Among the most studied, read, and admired works in world literature, Shakespeare's histories are unmatched for their dramatic brilliance, beauty of language, and profundity of thought. This convenient and affordable volume — ideal for students and lovers of literature — features four of the playwright's greatest historical works:
Henry IV, Part 1 masterfully combines comedy and historic events in fifteenth-century England while chronicling the rebellion within Henry's kingdom and portraying events in the life of the profligate young Prince Hal
Henry IV, Part II, highlighted by spectacular battles and tender love scenes, witnesses Hal's maturation and the development of his leadership abilities
Henry V explores the means by which the "ideal monarch" invades France, wins at Agincourt, and claims the French throne
Richard III follows the scheming Duke of Gloucester as he systematically exterminates all those who thwart his plans to succeed to the English throne

About the Author

"He was not of an age, but for all time," declared Ben Jonson of his contemporary William Shakespeare (1564–1616). Jonson's praise is especially prescient, since at the turn of the 17th century Shakespeare was but one of many popular London playwrights and none of his dramas were printed in his lifetime. The reason so many of his works survive is because two of his actor friends, with the assistance of Jonson, assembled and published the First Folio edition of 1623.

A Great "Can't Miss" Presentation of Shakespeare
By Big D
With the original text on the left page, the easy to understand modern text on the right-hand page, this is a can't miss edition. The best of both worlds, his and ours, and Henry IV never fails to deliver.

We all need our Hals and Hotspurs. And, yes, we need our Falstaffs as well.

An exceptional presentation of an exceptional work.

There are line numbers!
By barb in vista
This review is to make clear, that unlike what one previous reviewer said, the book does in fact have line numbers. Not every line is numbered, but every fifth. This makes it easy to find things. This version is also very nice with the modern English translation next to the old English. I would recommend it. We used it for a high school Shakespeare class with success.

This Is The Way To Study Shakespeare - At Least For Me!
By Francis C. Donnelly
I have been studying Shakespeare for some time now. My knowledge, as an adult, was abysmal. I started with "Will of The World", as an overview. Then I started reading plays in what is believed to be chronological order of which they were written. The problem was, when Inead some lays on my own, I simply got lost in the Elizabethan style. Half the time, I could not tell what was going on.

In desperation I tried "No Fear Shakespeare". Wow, did that help. I finally started to get the story lines.

If you are interested in the chronology of the writing of the plays, Henry IV one and two are believed to be written AFTER Henry VI, parts one, two, and three. If t matters to you, you can really see Shalespeare develope as a playwright if you ear his plays in the order they were written.

In case it matters, as far as I am concerned, Shakespeare needs to be experienced as performed by really good actors. But I need to read it first, study the play, and then watch the performance. I have learned to really enjoy most, but not all of his plays. (I pretty much despise "The Taming of The Shrew". Just can't help it.). Thank You...

Birthright: People and Nature in the Modern World, by Stephen R. Kellert

Human health and well-being are inextricably linked to nature; our connection to the natural world is part of our biological inheritance. In this engaging book, a pioneer in the field of biophilia—the study of human beings' inherent affinity for nature—sets forth the first full account of nature's powerful influence on the quality of our lives. Stephen Kellert asserts that our capacities to think, feel, communicate, create, and find meaning in life all depend upon our relationship to nature. And yet our increasing disconnection and alienation from the natural world reflect how seriously we have undervalued its important role in our lives.

Weaving scientific findings together with personal experiences and perspectives, Kellert explores specific human tendencies—including affection, aversion, intellect, control, aesthetics, exploitation, spirituality, and communication—to discover how they are influenced by our relationship with nature. He observes that a beneficial relationship with the natural world is an instinctual inclination, but must be earned. He discusses how we can restore the balance in our relationship by means of changes in childhood development, education, conservation, building design, ethics, and everyday life. Kellert's moving book provides exactly what is needed now: a fresh understanding of how much our essential humanity relies on being a part of the natural world.

Review
“I cried as I read Birthright....So expressively and delicately does Kellert expose the emotional bonds among nature, humanity, and the individual that it’s difficult not to be moved."—Daniel J. Witter, D. J. Case & Associates (Daniel J. Witter 2012-03-20)

"This is a great distillation of decades of scholarship on what might be thought of as “biophilia and beyond.” This book will be of great interest to the growing public who sense that we have become too separate from nature."—Thomas E. Lovejoy, University Professor, George Mason University and Biodiversity Chair, The Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment (Thomas E. Lovejoy 2012-03-20)

“Birthright eloquently, clearly, and persuasively makes the case for the fundamental importance of humanity’s experiences with nature throughout life. This is the first time I’ve seen such an effective effort to provide a personal explanation that artfully uses everyday examples.  Kellert's book will resonate with a wide variety of readers.”—Cheryl Charles, President and CEO, Children & Nature Network (Cheryl Charles 2012-03-20)

"Birthright is truly magnificent in so many ways. The empirical and intuitive are seamlessly woven together throughout. The book made me want to do something beautiful in the world! "—Gretel Van Wieren, Michigan State University (Gretel Van Wieren 2012-03-22)

“Stephen Kellert’s heartfelt Birthright is a moving memoir, a finely tuned analysis, and a gift to future generations and to the individuals and organizations determined to usher in a twenty-first-century human-nature reunion. Here is a topological map of that future.”—Richard Louv, author of The Nature Principle and chairman emeritus of the Children & Nature Network (Richard Louv 2012-03-23)

“Stephen R. Kellert invites readers on a companionable journey into neighborhood and urban center to reveal how biophilic design can help restore our ancient, beneficial relationship with the natural world.”—Terril Shorb, Ph.D., Prescott College (Terril Shorb 2012-03-23)

"Weaving a trove of learning together with engaging story and reflection, Kellert artfully explores how the deeply engrained human aptitude for kinship with all life is an adaptive strategy we need to get us through these uncertain times. The future depends on catalyzing 'long-tern human self-interest,' and this book shows how even the darker sides of our biophilia can serve this end. Here is a welcome tonic for toxic times, moving past polarized argument to the mindful persuasion of one who has found a sustaining connection with the natural world. This is a must-read for anyone who cares about the world and how to enrich our connection with the forces that sustain us."—Alison Hawthorne Deming, University of Arizona (Alison Hawthorne Deming 2012-08-03)

“Kellert successfully portrays his spiritual unity with the plants, animals, and elements that embrace and refresh him.” —Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly)

“An exploration of the specific ways in which a connection with the natural world affects the well-being of humankind. . . . Kellert isn’t advocating for a Luddite existence, but he argues convincingly for an increased understanding of our place as part of nature rather than just conquerors of it.” —Kirkus Reviews (Kirkus Reviews)

“[T]his is a very thought-provoking book. . . . Kellert draws both on his personal opinions/observations as well as published peer-review literature. And it’s his personal interjections that infuse this book with a sense of wonderment and respect for the natural world. . . . By revealing his humanity in relation to nature, he helped me to better understand a bit of mine.”—T. DeLene Beeland, Wild Muse (T. DeLene Beeland Wild Muse)

A Modern Druid
By Kevin McEneaney
Students of E. O. Wilson are translating his discoveries in sociobiology to other disciplines, especially in the new field of biophilia that Wilson created. Wilson defined biophilia as "the urge to affiliate with other forms of life.” Stephen Kellert, a former student of Wilson, has been one of Wilson’s foremost and successful advocates. Kellert’s twelfth book, birthright, investigates the love of nature from a psychological and ethical perspective. Wilson’s seminal influence has been branching into disciplines like architecture, environmentalism, anthropology, and even corporate life.

The central argument of Kellert’s new book? Unless we develop a culture that values and loves nature, our lives are diminished in various ways. Our recent and excessive fascination with the artificial world runs counter to the very environment which we evolved from. If we sever our ties with nature, we severely damage our practical common sense, which has made us the evolutionary wonders we are. Our birthright (the lower case type employed in the title invokes humility) to be happy must embrace both love of ourselves and our environment. Environmentalists often say that unless this happens, we will perish and leave the earth to insects and bacteria, yet the irony remains that bacteria and insects have much to teach us about life.

Our central strengths has been our paranoid brilliance. In some cases, this produces blindness. For example, no one loves the mosquito or poisonous spider, yet our fear of them has depreciated our ability to value all insects. Kellert’s chapter on insect fear is one of the most illuminating chapters in the book. Sometimes we don’t always love ourselves, and we sometimes project, unnecessarily, our fears onto the landscape. A great ironic line in the pop sci-fi flick Starship Troopers (1997) runs: “I thought we were smarter than the bugs.”

Like Wilson, Kellert appropriates personal anecdotes that run in tandem with astute psychological, aesthetic, ethical (and in Kellert’s arguments), religious observations. Kellert possesses a stronger sense of aesthetics (which, according to recent research, is genetically encoded in us) than Wilson, and is able to import biophilic perspectives (that interconnected gestalt of all living beings) into learning and working conditions, arguing through sociological statistics that healthy and beautiful environments mean more productive workers and learners. On the subject of poetry, he limits himself to quoting a poem about dreaming by seven-year-old Peter Weinberg. That poem should elicit envy from our most mature poets.

The French philosophes who dominated thinking from the 1960s through 1990s constructed wooden tree huts with tribal fiefdoms instead of forests. The attraction of Wilson’s theories in the hands of Kellert consists of its practical, Baconian presentation. Such a posture retains power through its universality, a universality not manifested since the syncretism of the Hellenic ideal that drew from all known religious traditions the new universal religion called Christianity. Later, St. Francis of Assisi revived Christianity by re-setting it within the pagan world-view from which Christianity had sprung before it strayed into artificial ritual and absurdly superstitious dogmas.

Wilson and Kellert propose that biophilic perspectives be applied to all disciplines, which is why Kellert, the Tweedy Ordway Professor Emeritus at Yale’s School of Forestry, is creating a master’s degree in Nature Studies for the Yale School of Divinity, which has been the top divinity school in America for the past two hundred years. Yale is ready to adapt, teach, and influence not only popular culture in our country, but the world.

Kellert’s book will stimulate you: not only how to rethink your life and its values, but how you might increase wonder in your life right now. Kellert’s eye is on the forest, not the individual tree that helped to produce this particular illumination. As a specialist in forestry, Kellert has interesting things to say about our cultural attitudes toward trees.
The word druid literally means tree priest.

An important lens for decision-making about the future of the planet
By Paul Reader
Kellert distills a large body of historical, ecological and green theological literature, together personal accounts (Interludes) to construct a practical ecological discourse and instrument for measuring our relationship to life and death in the world. At one end we can measure the intensity of the Modern era of abstraction, anthropocentrism, urbanity and death; at the other biophilia, our love of life, living things and the potential act with celebration as a contributor to the living world.
I'm sure I will cite it often for the short cut it provides to ecological thinking.
On a minor point, his treatment of Christianity as a cause of anthropocentrism, after Lynn White, does not really do justice to much of Christian thinking in relation to Creation and life, and misses the point that Christianity is ultimately theocentric not anthropocentric. Of course this is an easy mistake to make given the practice of many Christians in the Modern world. There is also a tendency to privilege environmentally thinking intellectuals of the 20th and 19th Century, and indigenous knowledge, without acknowledgement of European folk knowledges and ecological relationships. European folk traditions still alive in pre-World War II and the closeness of these communities to the earth, their suffering under the advance of Modernism are voiceless in this discourse. The rise of urban intelectualism, is really far more recent than perhaps we often imagine.

Cutting Edge Analysis
By rholland24
Western civilization, the last 10,000 years, encompasses .3% of human life on this globe. Human need and capacity is largely determined by the preceding 99.7% of human existence. Stephen Kellert identifies what western civilization has obscured to our individual and collective detriment. This book is among my top ten overall for understanding the dysfunctions of our times.

I think this would be handy for travels. I did hope to see a broader range of ailments. Much time was spent on diet considerations, but if you're traveling for vacation, I doubt you want to eat fruit and yogurt. Overall, it's a good book and I definitely learned some new things.

Recoding Gender: Women's Changing Participation in Computing (History of Computing), by Janet Abbate

Today, women earn a relatively low percentage of computer science degrees and hold proportionately few technical computing jobs. Meanwhile, the stereotype of the male "computer geek" seems to be everywhere in popular culture. Few people know that women were a significant presence in the early decades of computing in both the United States and Britain. Indeed, programming in postwar years was considered woman's work (perhaps in contrast to the more manly task of building the computers themselves). In Recoding Gender, Janet Abbate explores the untold history of women in computer science and programming from the Second World War to the late twentieth century. Demonstrating how gender has shaped the culture of computing, she offers a valuable historical perspective on today's concerns over women's underrepresentation in the field. Abbate describes the experiences of women who worked with the earliest electronic digital computers: Colossus, the wartime codebreaking computer at Bletchley Park outside London, and the American ENIAC, developed to calculate ballistics. She examines postwar methods for recruiting programmers, and the 1960s redefinition of programming as the more masculine "software engineering." She describes the social and business innovations of two early software entrepreneurs, Elsie Shutt and Stephanie Shirley; and she examines the career paths of women in academic computer science. Abbate's account of the bold and creative strategies of women who loved computing work, excelled at it, and forged successful careers will provide inspiration for those working to change gendered computing culture.

Review

We've heard stories about women pioneers in computing, and some of us have our own to tell, but Janet Abbate captivates us as she recounts the roles of early women in defining the field. These inventive women did more than battle limiting rules and expectations of their times but created their own rules and succeeded at the new game. Abbate offers this history in the context of a thoughtful and balanced exploration of how a newly formed field was, and continues to be, impacted by evolving forces of gender bias. There are amazing stories and important lessons here for all of us.

(Irene Greif, IBM Fellow and Director, IBM Center for Social Business)

In stories that can only be described as both heroic and cautionary, Janet Abbate shows how women worked to establish a place for themselves in the field of computation, how they succeeded, and how they were frustrated in their efforts. She provides a well-written account of how a technology that had promised a universal, logical machine became deeply intertwined with issues of gender and identity. Abbate's women help us to understand how we arrived at our modern perceptions of computing careers.

(David Alan Grier, George Washington University; 2013 President of the IEEE Computer Society)

This timely book takes a deep dive into the important question of why women are such a minority in computing technology. I hope the issues raised in this valuable book will inspire more women to join this growing field.

(Lixia Zhang, Computer Science Department, University of California, Los Angeles)

How did programming go from being 'women's work' to a 'boys-only clubhouse'? Janet Abbate has woven extensive interviews with women on both sides of the Atlantic who were instrumental in the beginning of the digital computer industry into a fascinating story of how the culture of a profession develops. This book should be read by every woman in computing and by men who want to understand how the current culture of programming evolved from very different roots.

(Robin Jeffries, Systers' Keeper, Systers Forum, Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology)

Abbate's chapters are, as readers of her earlier work expect, trenchant, precise, and compelling, for she carefully connects technical considerations with social dimensions to provide thick description of behaviors in action.

(Carol Colatrella nternational Journal of Gender, Science, and Technology)

This book is good reading for anyone who would like to explore the challenges of setting policies and gain a better understanding of the gender dynamics of a scientific and technical workforce.

(Maxine Cohen Computing Reviews)

Through the stories of early women programmers such as the World War II "Wrens" who worked on top-secret code decryption, entrepreneurs such as Stephanie Shirley who created and ran her own computing firm, and current-day computer scientists such as Anita Borg, Abbate does a marvelous job of describing the excitement, fun, and satisfaction that women past and present have found, and will continue to find, in computing work.

(Caroline Clarke Hayes Technology and Culture)

Insightful and Valuable Across Disciplines
By A. Smith
Janet Abbate's latest book, Recoding Gender (2012), provides an insightful and accessible account of women's role and (continual) challenges in computing fields (e.g., Computer Science and Software Engineering). She explores the barriers, both subtle and explicit, that have contributed to the underrepresentation of women in computing history, research, academics, and business, since its formation. Moreover, this work covers other significant aspects in the history of computing, such as the origins of professional identities and characteristics of the field that persist to this day. For example, the difficulty businesses face managing and motivating programmers whose work is "both art and science," which, during its rapid growth in the 60's and 70's, bucked conventional managerial practices and power relations (p.93). I highly enjoyed this work and would encourage individuals across disciplines (e.g., STS, Computer Science, Business) to peruse the pages.

Polynesian Seafaring and Navigation: Ocean Travel in Anutan Culture and Society, by Richard Feinberg

Without seafaring canoes, deep-sea sailing skills, and the ability to navigate by naked-eye observations of the stars and sea and bird life, there would have been no Polynesian people as we know them today. These islanders are as much a creation of their voyaging technology as they were creators of it. Had they and their ancestors not developed this technology and associated sailing and navigational skills, the ancestral Polynesians could never have ventured out into the middle of the pacific to find and settle so many islands and thereby develop into a sizable and culturally distinct people. There are a few out-of-the-way Polynesian islands where some facets of the old maritime tradition apparently survive today. One such island is Anuta, a tiny volcanic island which, though located within the Solomon Islands of Melanesia, is populated by Polynesians. Because of the small size of the island, its remoteness, and its lack of commercially viable resources, Anutans there still live close to the traditional pattern of their ancestors. They make and sail their canoes in more or less the same way that their ancestors did, and the sea so pervades their lives that much can be learned of the way Polynesians have adapted to their oceanic environment by looking at how Anutans interact with the sea. from the Foreword by Ben Finney, Professor of Anthropology, University of Hawaii. After fourteen months of field research in 1972-73 and an additional four months of field work with Anutans in the Solomon Islands capital of Honiara in 1983, Richard Feinberg here provides a thorough study of Anutan seafaring and navigation. In doing so, he gives rare insights into the larger picture of how Polynesians have adapted to the sea. This richly illustrated book explores the theory and technique used by Anutans in construction, use, and handling of their craft; the navigational skills still employed in interisland voyaging; and their culturally patterned attitudes toward the ocean and travel on the high seas. Further, the discussion is set within the context of social relations, values, and the Anutans' own symbolic definitions of the world in which they live.

Straight dope about Polynesian navigation
By Harry Eagar
One of the founders of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Ben Finney, says in the foreward to this book that Pacific islanders "are as much a creation of their voyaging technology as they were creators of it." If so, the virtual extinction of that technology a hundred years ago was a cultural catastrophe for the Polynesians. (Micronesian skills were better preserved.)

Any survivals of the great tradition are exceptionally valuable. Thus Anuta, a Polynesian "outlier" island in the mostly Melanesian eastern Solomons archipelago, comes to the fore. Anuta is not part of the great voyaging tradition -- not for 10 or more generations anyway -- but its insignificance helped preserve its traditions.

Richard Feinberg, an anthropologist at Kent State University, did his dissertation research on Anuta in 1972. In those days, before Hokulea and the PVS, the unimpressive Anutan fleet did not seem to merit special attention. But Feinberg liked boats and kept good notes.

In the late '80s he returned to Guadalcanal (the easiest place to find Anutans) and improved his knowledge, so that in "Polynesian Seafaring and Navigation" we have a rare comprehensive report of prehistoric techniques based on both foreign observation and explanations from living experts.

Even Anuta, which is roughly 500 miles from anywhere, was changing rapidly by the late '80s. "The exceptional skill and knowledge (of the best living Anutan navigators) may never be recaptured in the coming generations," wrote Feinberg then.

Depending upon whether you consider a glass to be half full or half empty, this book will seem depressing or heartening.

Anutan canoes are not large, they make only short voyages and few of those. On the other hand, their techniques are a smaller, if not quite exact, replica of those used by the great interisland voyagers; their craftsmanship is very fine, and their memories are long.

Anuta is a tiny island, only half a mile across, and one reason Anutans don't make great voyages is that they don't produce many first-rate navigators. It may be true that on the steppes every boy becomes an expert horseman, but a canoe made from a hollowed-out tree is a much more demanding steed.

Every Anutan man is a good boatman, but it appears that a really self-confident Anutan navigator comes along less than once in a generation.

The ocean has many swells. While the chief and perhaps one other Anutan can steer just by the feel of the waves slapping the hull, other men admitted to Feinberg that they could not even distinguish the different swells. (The navigator of Hokulea, Nainoa Thompson, had the same experience. His teacher, Mau Piailug, worked with five swells; Thompson never learned to use more than three. See also my review of Will Kyselka, "An Ocean in Mind.")

Oil may be under the sea around Anuta, and if it is, Feinberg believes, Anutan society in its authentic form is doomed. Already the islanders have switched from sennit to monofilament fishing line to lash their canoes.

Still, their attitude remains steadfastly Polynesian, Anutan and premodern. : When a canoe is destroyed, it gets a human funeral.
