Gene Edward Veith Jr. (PhD, University of Kansas) is provost and professor of literature at Patrick Henry College and the director of the Cranach Institute at Concordia Theological Seminary. He has been a columnist for World magazine and TableTalk, and is the author of a number of noted books on Christianity and culture, including God at Work.

Inspiring theology of ordinary life

You may believe you are called to a job or to a non-profit ministry, but do you think of yourself as called to every other part of your life? Skilled Author Gene Edward Veith points out that an idea presented in the Protestant Reformation, that of the priesthood of all believers, teaches Christians to see all of life as God's call to glorify and enjoy Him. As a citizen, a parent, a spouse, a worker, and a church member, you are called to certain holy responsibilities and benefits. Veith writes, "Every kind of work [including fathering and mothering] . . . is an occasion for priesthood, for exercising a holy service to God and to one's neighbor." Therefore, our lives aren't on hold when the boring parts seem to hold up the enjoyable parts or when business seems to hold up ministry. It's all part of our multiple calling. We have God-given vocations meant to honor and enjoy God in everything we do whether it's in the back office, in the discipling process, or on the ball field.
More than this, the author draws from Martin Luther's writing on vocation to describe God's hidden role in our work. The Lord works through our activity, even the most mundane, to further His kingdom and glorify Himself. Understanding this results in a comprehensive "theology of ordinary life." "Most people seek God in mystical experiences. . . To find Him in vocation brings Him, literally, down to earth, [and] makes us see how close He really is to us."
God At Work is inspiring. It's a well-written handling of an important subject, increasingly important as the world urges us to segregate faith from all public life. Veith argues that God didn't establish secular work apart of the sacred. He designed everything as sacred.

Your job counts for God's kingdom

Having read other books by Dr. Gene E. Veith, Jr., I knew that this would also be an excellent read. Dr. Veith is culture editor for World magazine and one of the country's foremost Christian thinkers and writers. What unfolded in the pages was a book that I will refer to again and again. In it he tackles the doctrine of vocation. The book answers so many thoughtful questions: What am I supposed to be doing with my life? Why is my job so mundane and seems so insignificant if I am really doing what God wants me to do? How can I find out what I am supposed to be doing for my life's work? and many other pertinent questions that we've all struggled with. The book is based on the theology of Luther who wrote about vocation. It is certainly a missing element in much of today's Christian literature.

Being an artist and art teacher, I felt even more convinced that this is exactly what I was born to do. With this contentment also comes a renewed energy in wanting to do my job as best as I can and to be patient in my job and know that God is using me to accomplish His goals.

The book points out too that often when we are discouraged it is the enemy of our souls wanting us to give up and often when the stress and pressure are the greatest, that is when God is using us the most and that is exactly where we should be. Encountering troubles and struggles is exaclty what Christians are supposed to doing. No flowery beds of ease. It is a fight for those who want to truly live for Jesus Christ.

Dr. Veith writes with a graceful fluidity that is easy on the mind. He deals with a great human issue in a very warm and Biblical way. He knows what he is writing about and he takes the reader down new paths that are thrilling and fortifying.

This book is worth its weight in gold and it is one that you will refer back to many times over. It is a treasure and I only wish it were in hard cover. Then it would be totally perfect!

Good book

This book is a well-written, easy to read introduction to Luther's doctrine of vocation. Veith explores the doctrine of vocation and shows that it not only gives value to work, it is also the key to Christian ethics. In the introductory paragraphs, Veith explains how the doctrine of vocation is how God is at work in the normal day-to-day activities of people's lives. In providing daily bread for his people, for example, God is at work in the human callings of farmers, bakers, truck drivers, factory workers, wholesalers, retailers, etc. Different vocations, then, are rightly understood as secondary means which God has ordained to accomplish his purposes. Veith then devotes a chapter to each of the major vocations: our calling as a worker, our calling in the family, our calling as a citizen, and our calling in the church. In these chapters, he explores relevant biblical texts dealing with each of the vocations and demonstrates their application through real-life examples. To wrap up the book, Veith spends a couple chapters on the ethical implications of the doctrine of vocation and how it works to shed light on controversial ethical questions (euthanasia, abortion, etc.). I enjoyed this book thoroughly, and after reading it, I finally understood clearly how the Reformation eliminated the medieval sacred/secular distinction. It's all sacred. It's God at work.

Shockingly charming

An absolutely charming little read, it lacks a lot of in depth discussion about her creative process, but it makes up for it in the delightful characterization of one of the most fascinating women designers of the 20th century. Schiap, as she refers to herself in the 3rd person (before switching fluidly back to 1st person), comes across the pages as a singular force powered by innate stubbornness and an insatiable curiosity about life. She breaks rules with a wink and a nod, bends conventions with effortless ease, and conveys the triumphs and disappointments of her remarkable life with self-effacing humor and tenderness.

It's not a deep, soul-searching autobiography, but neither is it complete fluff. She managed to strike the balance between exposing herself and keeping some things a tantalizing mystery... Something many of today's celebrity autobiographers could learn from.

For a fashion designer that in her time invented the newspaper print, the bottle perfume made as a little body -now copied by Gaultier-, the first zipper in a haute couture dress and a variety of items from hats to shoes and dresses inspired by surrealism and dada, this autobiography lacks of real interest in design and fashion.

Have you ever met such a lady so fascinated with herself that she always thinks everything she does from open a beer can to walk her dog is a world event? This is precisely the case here. Even when is not boring to read, Elsa seem to forget her real contribution to fashion design, and then what we get is a collection of traveling and social acquaintances. Once and then she just drop, 'and that was the time when I made the Roi Soleil -a perfume with a bottle designed by Dali, commemorative of the end of french occupation-' or I made a hat....
Her quite serendipitious arrive to fashion design when she order a knitted sweater to be made on her with a big ribbon drawn in the front by some armenian woman, was spotted in the street and get an order for dozens of them, was then continued by a career of many extravagancies -skeletons, lobster dress, a shoe-hat, that made her in that times more famous than Coco Chanel.

She stopped her career after the world war, when she was not able to be in tone with the zeitgeist and went into oblivion, when you read this book and just have the vague mention of Marcel Duchamp -his lover Maria Martins-, Dali, Paul Poiret, Greta Garbo, Lucien Lelong, even Chanel and Dior, but never get any interesting detail about them, you start to realize that maybe Elsa was to much intoxicated by herself to even be aware of the extraordinary presences she has in front of her eyes. And left guessing if she was just extraordinary lucky to be at the right time and place with a knitted sweater and drawn ribbon. By a very strange self censorship we do not get even the slightly glimpse into her love life or any spicy anecdote about anyone in the surroundings either!
it has some little pages with a few black and white photographs of her, her dogs and daughter -never the dresses- and at the end of each chapter a cute fashion drawing made by herself.

Nevertheless can be read easily and stands as a portrait of the time between the wars in Europe and America... if only she would stop and tell us a little about her process, how she get inspired, what she thought about the garment construction, how she organized the atelier, etc. then it would be something of real interest for the designer and the aficionado, and not just a curiosity of interest only for the fashion historian -like me-.

a mother-daughter book

Elsa is a fascinating figure, especially as seen through the eyes of a girl growing up and wanting to spread her wings, but the book is really a fabulous mother-daughter story. It is brilliant and funny and original--the way the text and the illustrations play off each other--but at the heart is the portrait of a mother whose beauty was essential to her sense of self, and who was by turns loving, cruel, indifferent and demanding. Shocking pays affectionate tribute to a New York childhood while chronicling the ways in which a free-spirited daughter escaped the conventional standards of looks and behavior imposed by her mother.

Not up to Head First standards

I can only assume that the two glowing reviews were written by people that skimmed the contents and didn't actually work through it. Why? Because you can't!

There's quite a few important errors and no errata online. The web links to get the work files (I miss CDs) are wrong and when you're redirected to the correct page the files may or may not be there. Example, page 71, "Download 'Acmestyle.css' from..." I downloaded the chapter two file, unZipped it and the two Zip files that were in the resulting folder. There is no "Acmestyle.css" or mention of it in the files nor on the book's web page. This book was published a few months ago, surely they've noticed the problems and fixed them. Nope.

Out of frustration, as I couldn't continue without the file, I did a web search for "Acmestyle.css" and that lead to a link to a O'Reilly forum message where others reported the problem almost two months ago(!) and one poster said that it appears to be the same as the "screen.css" file inside one of the folders downloaded. I looked and it is very close to what I saw on the screen, not exact but darn close and would get me unstuck. I looked at some other messages on this book and saw there's more unanswered problems with the book's contents I have to look forward to. Swell.

In places this book is pretty nice like some other Head First books (I have several) that I have learned from, but in others it's as clear as mud!

I don't mind some errors in books as they happen and that's what errata pages are for. Problem is that there aren't any. There's no help from the author or O'Reilly in the forum either. I saw that the author commented to a review here, I think he (and we, the buyers of the book) would be better served if he spent some time making an errata for the book and maybe helping out in the forum -- anonymously would be fine. Note: The version of the TwentyTen template this book is using in WP 3.0 is a little different from the current one in WP 3.0.1 so that can be a bit confusing (errata idea?) but not major.

I bought this book to learn from, not struggle with. Luckily, I have other options. It goes back!

Very disappointing

I have really enjoyed the Head First series, but this book does not live up to what I have come to expect. I have purchased and gone cover-to-cover through Head First HTML & CSS, Head First Javascript, Head Rush Ajax, Head First PHP & MySQL, and Head First Web Design. Loved them all. In comparison, Head First WordPress is a mess. The numerous typos are one thing. Making matters worse is the disjointed presentation of the material. The book jumps around between topics, and so far has never stopped to give you a check-point (something like, here is what your completed code/page should look like now.... snippets everywhere, but no completed picture) Also, the download files do not match up with the code snippets in the book. I quickly lost confidence that the text was correct. I got to the point that when something didn't work as described, I couldn't tell if I did something wrong, or if the text was just messed up again.

Some instructions as are missing and others are wrong. Particularly irritating was the section on permalinks ... it basically says, if this explanation doesn't work, here's a forum link, go figure it out for yourself.

The more I study, the less tolerance I have for books that waste my time. I set this book aside before finishing chapter 2.

I absolutely love the Head First Series of books and, while they are not the most in depth and complex books on a subject, I consider them the most user friendly way to quickly and easily learn a challenging and difficult topic. So when I learned they were coming out with a book on Wordpress I quickly preordered it and then waited, and waited, and waited until...now. At last the book arrived and I'm not disappointed. For the average user (and let's face it, even the above average user) this is everything you need to know about how to install and use Wordpress for all but the most advanced website tasks.

While most people will choose to install Wordpress using the "one click" installation service offered by their hosting provider, the Headfirst book starts with a detailed description of how to download and install it the old fashioned way...manually. Even if you were to choose not to use the "one click" method (which I would advise against), reviewing this section gives you a good idea of the nuts and bolts of your Wordpress installation.

Next they cover the basics of posting and using images in your posts, including basic problems, troubleshooting and even covering file permissions. When it comes to changing your blogs appearance they do a very good job of describing templates, including third party templates, and also provide a solid overviews of HTML, PHP and CSS and how you can use it to modify your sight. Widgets are covered in depth as well.

The aspect of Wordpress I was most interested in learning more about was how to use it as a Content Management System (CMS) and the book covers the subject well, including a very good discussion on how to structure your website, how to modify your permalinks, set up the navigation bar and to use the visual editor.

There is an entire chapter devoted to embedding and handling video on the site which I felt was very important. Again, they covered not just how to embed video, but how to keep the video on your site organized and well structured, as well as various plugins that can be used to add extra functionality to the site. One part I didn't expect was the information on how to podcast, which I thought was interesting. This was covered in conjunction with advice on setting up syndication and using Feedburner. I personally have never done any podcasting, but it's nice to know that the information is there if I need it. I did appreciate the discussion on syndication however and thought it made getting set up on Feedburner easier and less confusing I remember it being.

There is a chapter devoted to Wordpress security which, having suffered from malware and virus attacks on my Wordpress blogs in the past, I thought was a good idea. One can never be too secure when it comes to the Internet and the advice in this chapter is solid.

If your new to Wordpress this is a excellent book to get you started. I highly recommend it. I found this more user friendly and readable than any other Wordpress book I have read or reviewed. If you use Wordpress but want to understand it and get more out of it I highly recommend this book as well, especially if you want to learn how to go into the code to modify the appearance of your site. IF you want to use Wordpress to it's full functionality get this book.

In this edition of his widely acclaimed study, Marion B. Lucas tackles one of the most debated questions about the Civil War: Who burned South Carolina's capital city on February 17, 1865? Before the fires had finished smoldering, Confederates and Federals accused each other of starting the blaze, igniting a controversy that has raged for more than a century. To determine the actual origin of the fire, Lucas sifts through myriad official records, newspapers, and eyewitness accounts. The evidence he amasses allows him to debunk many of the myths surrounding the tragedy. Unlike generations of South Carolinians and students of the Civil War, he does not assign particular blame to William Tecumseh Sherman but implicates both Confederate and Federal troops. Lucas traces the damage not to a single blaze but to a series of fires—preceded by an equally unfortunate series of military and civilian blunders—that included the burning of cotton bales by fleeing Confederate soldiers.

PLENTY OF BLAME FOR ALL INVOLVED

Professor Lucas has written a well researched analysis of the burning of Columbia, South
Carolina by the Federal army. There were strategic military reasons for Sherman's march
through central South Carolina. Columbia "was an important war manufacturing
center--one of the few still in Confederate hands--providing munitions, equipment, and
uniforms....central South Carolina contained the last Confederate sources of food
untouched by war." Governor Magrath pointed out to Jefferson Davis that the borders of
South Carolina were Richmond's second line of defense which was confirmed when
Richmond fell less than two months after Columbia surrendered.
The author outlines the wartime conditions in Columbia noting that both the civilian and
military authorities were tardy in realizing the obvious danger to the city and even slower
to act. Finally the author writes "The missing ingredient with the Confederate camp....was
a belief in the possibility of success. The defeatism of Beauregard's leadership was
abundantly clear...."
Chapter 2 gives a succinct account of the evacuation of Columbia noting that inspite of
the desperate condition of the Confederate armies, the large arsenals and war supplies in
Columbia were not evacuated. The cotton in storage was moved into the streets with
orders for it to be burned which contributed to the later fires. Columbia Mayor Goodwyn
surrendered the city while scores of bewildered Columbians, in an ill-conceived attempt to
placate a dreaded conqueror, began distributing alcoholic beverages to the soldiers. This
precipitated an insurmountable problem.
A balanced account of the burning of Columbia is given. The most damaging fire began
about eight p.m.on February 17th, was of inexplicable origin and was not extinguished for
six or seven hours when the wind abated. With drunken men roaming the streets, rioting
and acts of personal violence were bound to occur. Confusion reigned and most control
over the city was lost . The extent of the damage following the fire is reviewed. About
one-third of Columbia was destroyed with the business community virtually wiped out and
265 residences burned.
Regarding who burned Columbia, the conclusions were (and still are) along partisan lines.
South Carolinians charged Sherman as "morally responsible for the burning of Columbia".
Union officers and troops felt that while the events in Columbia were regrettable they
were the results of acts of war. Sherman entered South Carolina to disrupt the state's
transportation system and bring an end to the war by destroying Southern morale.
However, Professor Lucas notes "The failure of Sherman's psychological warfare, a new
kind of war which Southern civilians did not understand, was that the hatred generated
during the invasion did not terminate with the war's end."
The post war criticisms of and charges against Sherman and the Union army are reviewed.
The author notes that the Confederates as they evacuated the city began the looting and
plundering then the entering Federal troops seized what was left. The unanswered
question of incendiarism, the most disputed issue, is complicated by a lack of reliable
eyewitness accounts.
In summary, Sherman failed to take timely and sufficient action to control both the fires
and the riots. However, the author notes that the failure of Confederate leadership in the
defense of South Carolina and the evacuation of the city played a major role in creating a
situation which resulted in the destruction of the city. In addition no preparations were
made by Beauregard, Hampton or the city fathers for the official surrender of the city
when a formal declaration of Columbia as an open city may have produced positive
results.
In conclusion, Professor Lucas writes that the burning of Columbia was a great tragedy
for South Carolina and the Union stating "....when the Union Army left Columbia on
February 20, 1865, it left behind bitter hatred. Many citizens had lost everything they
possessed, while others had gone through the catastrophe relatively unscathed. All,
however, suffered psychologically. They had promised to give their "all" in defense of
South Carolina and the Confederacy; it was painfully apparent that few had done so. Long
before Columbia was captured, Columbians had given up."

Sherman and the Burning of Columbia

This is a thorough and judicious study of a limited but perennially controversial topic in Civil War history. The author reviews and analyzes all the eyewitness evidence for the occupation of Columbia, South Carolina, by William Tecumseh Sherman's army in 1865, and the disastrous fires and riot that ensued. He also critiques the post-bellum investigations and accounts that endeavored to fix blame. He combines his scholarship with an engrossing narrative style and expresses it in crystalline prose. He concludes and demonstrates that there were multiple causes for the events, and assigns blame to both Confederate officials and Union military, as well as to natural forces. But he counters accusations that General Sherman deliberately ordered the incendiarism, and shows that far less of Columbia was destroyed than often claimed. I recommend this book to those interested in the specific subject, but think the level of detail might be tiresome for the general reader.

My 11 yr old granddaughter (Columbia, SC) has been taught that Sherman and his army burned Columbia after firing cannon balls at the Capital. Lucas debunks the long held myth that Sherman burned Columbia. The "honor" of the burning goes to Wade Hampton (CSA) who ordered firing debris in the streets to make it appear to Sherman's approaching Army that the city was on fire. However, the fires get out of hand due to strong winds and many buildings caught fire. In addition, Lucas points out that it was not unusual for Confederates in towns threatened by Sherman to order that buildings containing valuable war supplies be burned. The book is well written and like no other focuses upon this city's part in Sherman's march to the sea and afterward.

About the Author
Charles D. Hodges Jr. M.D. is a family physician who practices medicine in Indianapolis. He is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine, Liberty University and Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary with degrees in medicine, counseling and religion. He is board certified in Family medicine and Geriatrics and is a licensed marital family therapist. Dr Hodges teaches and counsels at the Faith Biblical Counseling Ministry and teaches on medical subjects in Biblical counseling around the country and abroad. He and his wife Helen have been married 41 years and have 4 children and 12 grandchildren. Golf and running are both things he enjoys!

Help and Hope for Sorrow and Depression.

I found Good Mood, Bad Mood, to be a revolutionary, thought provoking and much needed book.
When you love someone who is depressed, or are depressed yourself, your focus is on getting through grind of the day ahead of you, not healing. You settle into head above water mode, trying to keep from sinking- not moving toward shore.
One doctor says medication is your answer for every person, another says you need to "get at the root" of the problem.
One says what you feel is imaginary, another says it is your identity.

I was thrilled to see Dr. Hodges' belief that hope and help could be found in the person of Jesus for those who are depressed.
I was startled to see that many people who are grieving or mourning are diagnosed with depression, and then possibly given the wrong medication, when what they need is compassionate help with heavy sorrow.

What is depression?
Is it a disease, with a cause within the body?
Sometimes, certainly, there is a physical cause.
Is medication the way to treat it, or is there a deeper root that medication can't always touch?
Are some people being labeled "depressed" being hurt by this diagnosis, and is part of the hurt the baggage that comes with the label?
Why are there so many definitions for what depressed is?
What about bipolar?
Far too many patients today feel like the woman in the Gospel of Luke, with the issue of blood that went on for twelve long years. Luke, being a doctor, was troubled that no one had been able to help her case. Medicine had no answers for her problem, though many doctors had tried, Luke tells us.
Mark says frankly that she had spent all she had on physicians and had been harmed rather than helped. Jesus, her Creator, was the only One who could help her, and a single touch of her hand to His robe healed her.
"Thankfully," writes Dr. Hodges, "Medicine has made incredible advances since that woman was healed by Jesus. But we still face the same problems that doctors did in Luke's day. We encounter diseases that we struggle to accurately diagnose and effectively treat. And patients endure much. The purpose of this book is to look at another area of medicine in which patients face the kind of problems this woman faced. The diagnosis and treatment of the disease do not result in a rapid and complete cure. The cost of treatment and the lost wages are a significant burden to those affected. Yet in a significant number of cases, the real solution may be found in a meaningful encounter with the Great Physician."

This book works through both science and Scripture.
The science of how depression and bipolar have been diagnosed through the years shines light on how to help depressed people today, and Scripture is rich with the stories of sorrowed men and women. These stories of their heavy sorrow and their cries of sadness help us as well with our sadness. God tells us our sadness is not imaginary, and it is not our identity either.
And over all their stories is something that helps us even more, that never changes for them or for us- the love of the God of all Comfort who promised to carry His children.

What is depression?
Is it a disease, or a period of intense sadness from many causes?
First we must understand what a disease is, and how physicians treat it.
Does all depression have a physical cause?
Will all cases of depression respond to medication, or is there another way we can support and encourage a person in a fog of sadness?

Scripture reminds us that since Eden, brokenness, sadness, mourning, pain disease and death have been marring our world. Depression has come upon the greatest saints in the Old Testament and the New. What is sadness for? Why does God allow us mourn when we were not created for a fallen world?
Is sorrow ever good, Biologically or spiritually?

In Scripture we read the life of Hannah, who knew the loss of her dream for a long time and her painful longing for children. Hannah would not eat, would not rest, and prayed weeping before the LORD.

We read of Martha and Mary, who lost Lazarus to death of a sudden illness. Jesus responded to them in their sorrow by weeping with them. There is a time to mourn, and mourning is hardly ever a clean, mess-less, tidy process. How can we mourn with those who mourn and assure them that joy will come in the morning, though weeping may endure for the long night?

And Paul, the man who wrestled with a thorn in the flesh that tormented him, emotionally and physically. His thorn was never taken away.
Is it possible that some people will wrestle with sadness as their thron, and that no medicine will help them, but God's Grace will be more than sufficient?
How can we support and uphold them, the way we do all our brethren, without labeling them as "diseased?"

Good Mood Bad Mood contains stories made up from Dr. Hodges' years of helping patients. As I read the chapters devoted to telling Eve's story, I praised God for raising up doctors like Dr. Hodges, who compassionately counsel their patients from the open book of Scripture and the common sense understanding of the body God made. Dr. Hodges is a doctor who is familiar with the Scriptures and his patient will be able to help them see what area they need restoration in. I was very glad to read the account of Eve and how she was guided back into Life out of the spiritual wasteland of alcohol abuse amidst deep sadness. I know so many people who need a doctor like this, who can point them to Our LORD.
I am so glad that healing can be part of our vocabulary when it comes to depression, not just getting through the day.

What an eye-opening book!

This is one book that the reader will either love or hate. I do not believe a person can be ambivalent about this book. It addresses the hot button issue of depression and bipolar disorders. In doing so it goes against the grain and contradicts much of today's ideas about these issues.

Written by a medical doctor, this book gives both a medical and biblical perspective on the issue of depression.

Many today deal with depression as a disease. Dr. Hodges tells us that there is no set-in-stone manner in which depression can be diagnosed. It's not as if there is a blood test which will show the presence of depression. In fact, Dr. Hodges tells us that the diagnosis of depression is subject to the opinion of the one making the diagnosis.

Interestingly enough (And astounding, too!), it seems that many bipolar symptoms are caused by antidepressant medications.

Hodges presents to us the need to think through the diagnosis and treatment of depression. In fact, he plainly shows that much depression can be dealt with as sadness was once dealt with; because the two are the same. I was gratified to see that he has successfully helped some depressed people by counseling them from Scripture, leading them to repentance and faith in the sovereignty of God in their lives. When we repent and embrace God's love to us we will often find ourselves leaving behind damaging behaviors and finding joy in Christ.

There is no way to recommend this book too highly if someone is concerned about the problems that often lead to diagnoses of bipolar disorder or depression. Pastors, counselors, and others who desire to minister to people dealing with these things certainly would be helped by reading this book.

Exceeded my expectations

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but I was hoping it would help me understand what depression is, what bipolar disorder is, and whether or not there is hope of recovering from these prevalent health issues. Dr. Hodges explains these illnesses and the science behind them in a very easy to understand (and remember) way. I also appreciated his explanations of how a diagnosis is made and the theories behind them. There is a lot of confusion and misunderstanding/misinformation circulating. He clears up a lot of that by laying a solid foundation at the beginning of the book for why so many people are being misdiagnosed, and why medication isn't helping everyone, and in fact, could be causing more damage for some people.

The second half of the book is, in my opinion, a very accurate analysis of why our culture currently reacts the way it does to the "normal" disappointments and sorrows in life. Our culture no longer believes in God, and therefore no longer is able to find purpose or meaning in all of life, including the setbacks and sadness that are part of life. There is no God to help navigate the waters of grief, giving them redeeming value and making them a pathway to maturity, depth, and greater compassion for others as well as a greater capacity to know and experience God more intimately.

Depression is largely a modern ailment suffered by a humanity that wants what it wants, when it wants it...and no God involved. Yet God is the One missing component that can bring a suffering person back to emotional health and life. The author writes very compassionately. The reader feels very cared about and understood in this book. But more than that, the reader is left with hope that medication alone cannot provide. Rather than a band aide providing some short term relief, the message presented in this book is more of a surgery that cuts to the root of the problem, digs it out, and then applies a healing balm that will ultimately bring long term healing. The kind of healing that can put a new song in a sad heart...a song of praise to God...and joy that comes in the morning after a very, very long night.

About the Author
Douglas Lorain s family moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1969, and he has been obsessively hitting the trails of his home region ever since. Over the years he calculates that he has logged well over 30,000 trail miles in this corner of the continent, and despite a history that includes being bitten by a rattlesnake, shot at by a hunter, charged by a grizzly bear, and donating countless gallons of blood to “invertebrate vampires, he happily sees no end in sight.

Lorain is a photographer and recipient of the National Outdoor Book Award. His books cover only the best trips from the thousands of hikes and backpacking trips he has taken throughout Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. His photographs have been featured in numerous magazines, calendars, and books. He is described by the Seattle Times as the next great Northwest trail guide author.

Some good info, some outdated info

I bought this guide because of the author's experience on the Trail, but it turns out this strength is also a weakness. The author seems to have fallen into the trap of "my way is the best way" and though that works for suggesting side trips and best starting points, it is not so good for things like gear and map suggestions. For example, the author says that under no circumstances should someone use a down bag because of what happens when down gets wet, but after hiking two long distance trails (the AT and the PCT) I can't name one hiker who didn't carry a down bag, even in extremely wet conditions. (Stick it in a trash bag people!) As far as maps go, he gives three suggestions for maps, then tells us which is the best one, but not why it's the best or any of the qualities of any of them. Finally, the bulk of the book is devoted to extensive trail description, which is nice, but I would have really enjoyed a Data Table that contained mileage, major features, water sources and other pertinent info. This would make trip planning a lot easier than having to read through pages and pages of description.

Overall this book is a fair starting point and has information you'll definitely need, but if you are new to backpacking there are better sources.

Excellent trail detail

I have purchased several other Wonderland Trail books and this book by far had trail details that will help a hiker navigate not just the Wonderland but many other sites and trails. While some readers found Doug Lorain as being less poetic and flowery in his descriptions, I appreciated his writing style and maps. I plan to write my own poetry about my hike and need no other authors inspiration in that. I recommend that several travel logs be purchased and information gleaned...but this is the book I plan on bringing with me.

Info on obtaining permits was correct and easier to understand than the park service site. I took along the hike descriptions and read ahead each evening to see what was coming up.

Nine out of every ten human beings are naturally right-handed. Those who were not right-handed were feared, shunned, or forcibly retrained in many periods and cultures. Indeed, some members of fundamentalist sects still regard left-handers as in league with the devil, and prejudices against left-handers are reflected in the multiple associations of right with good and left with bad that have become enshrined in everyday language and folklore. A “left-handed compliment” is actually an insult, and the dictionary definition of left-handed includes the terms “awkward,” “clumsy,” “ill-omened,” and “Illegitimate.”

In his summary of scientific research into sidedness, Stanley Coren rapidly dismisses the notion of the southpaw as somehow tainted. Increasingly we are coming to understand, however, that left-handedness does have social, educational, medical, and psychological implications.

Coren uses entertaining examples to illuminate the paths of research he has followed, and answers vitally important questions such as: What are the neuropsychological and behavioral implications of differences for left-handers themselves, as well as for their parents, teachers, spouses, children, counselors, and physicians? How can we determine our own patterns of sidedness? Are they encoded in our genes? And, very importantly, how can we make the world more comfortable and safer for left-handers? Coren persuasively argues that left-handers are an invisible minority who must define themselves and organize for self-protections in the same way that more visible minorities have done. Much (though not all) of the risk to which left-handers are exposed derives from the fact that the tools they use and the machines they operate are designed for right-handers, a flaw that given heightened public awareness would be easy to correct. Coren advocates a change in the way the right-handed majority treats its left-handed minority to eliminate the risks left-handers face.

Coren received a good deal of media attention several years ago when he and a colleague published a paper claiming that left-handed people die at a considerably younger age, on average, than their right-handed counterparts. The current book explores the social consequences and biological causes of sinistrality in the process of explaining these findings, disproving some widely held myths along the way (e.g., most southpaws are not "right-brained"; handedness is probably not inherited). The book is readable without oversimplifying the topic, and is highly recommended for public and academic libraries on the basis of its own merits, the interest it will generate, and the fact that it is the only serious and up-to-date treatment of the topic for the general reader.

All hands are equal,but one hand is more equal than the other

Well well, there is some very interesting stuff here. Why are only around 10% of the population left handed? Is this genetic or learned? And what does this mean for tool making, writing, driving, accident proneness, societal prejudice, sporting pursuits, and general living as a left hander? You might also be interested to know that around 20% of people are left footed, and around 40% of people are left eyed. Also more woman are right handed than men. And then there are the mixed types, the ambidextorous, and also those who mix different activities and their handedness- say writing and throwing. A surpising number of people are actually mixed types, and this increases for footedness and eyedness.
This book is a good overview of various statistics, and what it means to live as a left hander in a right handed world. The author has conducted many years research into various studies, from identical twin studies, to family studies, to genes and learning, to the way tools are designed, and how left handers cope with these sorts of things in general. Bias, prejudice, and general policies are discussed, both historically and in recent times. (Everyone knows the old rap over the knuckle for left handed school students several generations ago, but where have we come from there?).
The author mentions his university in the 1990s where all the chairs in his lecture theatre have right-sided writing areas. (Being left handed in writing, I also remember having to cope with this at university. I also remember smudging most of my first ink pen writing in primary school-left handed writers will know what I am talking about!).
One of the best things about this book is the detail. Not only is there analyses of handedness, but as mentioned, footedness, eyeness, and even earness. Which ear do you listen to your watch with? Also, mixed handed types are discussed, along with various sports, and degree of lefthandness (and right handedness!) in each, and where it may be useful to be more of a mixed type for some sports (eg soccer with mixed footedness, and basketball with mixed handedness). Readers are given personal questionaires to determine their general level of left or right handedness, footedness, earness, and eyeness. Links with brain states and brain areas, personality types, tendancy to certain careers and so on is also discussed. Famous lefties are also listed.
The book is a must for the curious leftie, and for those who are interested in where this curious, and rather little studied aspect of humanity is taking us.

Very concrete and helpful as well as scientifically sound

I learned a great deal about myself reading this book and I think even came away with higher self esteem. The author is a leading scientist studying left-handedness and explains why media and "common knowledge" information and facts on the subject are often incorrect. The writing style is factual and informative but also entertaining. You learn about the problems of left-handed presidents as well as your own or a friend's problems and why there are fewer left-handed older people than younger ones. I'm very grateful to the author for explaining to me why I had so much trouble in dancing class as a teenager; I found his answer to that puzzle much more help than all the dermatologists my mother took me to for my acne. I wish I could have read this book earlier in my life.

Interesting issues that are worthy of further investigation

This book doesn't tell left-handers how best to live in a right-handers' world, but it doesn't purport to. It does, however, live up to its title. Coren presents a range of very interesting theories and conclusions about left-handedness. Crucially, he also describes the actual studies and presents their results, and is fairly clear about when something's just a theory and why one might believe it, so you get to see some raw facts and judge for yourself. I'm strongly left-handed and am not in the least bit offended by the idea that it could have possibly been caused by something going slightly wrong somewhere. Some of the theories did actually explain a few things about my family and myself quite well, which was an added bonus.
