Review
OF INTEREST Practitioners of Oriental medicine believe that when there is balance in the human body between Yin and Yang the person will exhibit good health however, when Yin and Yang are imbalanced, ill-health occurs. Health is an expression of balance, in Oriental Medicine disease is viewed as a physical expression of an imbalance within the body. Oriental Medicine practitioners look at the symptoms. along with other diagnostic methods, to identify patterns of disharmony. Each of the body organ systems must be in balance within itself and with the other organ systems. Whilst this may appear to be complex it is actually incredibly simple - balance in the human body. This is why a combination of diet, acupressure, massage, tapping and exercise are effective. Oriental Medicine determines your level of health through the examination of the normal and abnormal organ system functions in your body and, by treating the cause of the problem rather than the symptoms, brings the body back to the point of balance and wellbeing.

For fathers who long to make a positive, lasting difference in their sons’ lives, passing down a legacy of values and ideals that will help them mature into men—into true men, leaders, voices of strength and wisdom for the next generation and beyond—the challenge has become more daunting than ever. I Call Shotgun is a practical playbook designed to equip dads for this vital task, increasing our influence and deepening our father-son relationships.

Written as letters from the authors to their own sons, the book’s sixty-four bite-size chapters cover a wide range of territory, from courage and compassion to finance and faith, from peer pressure and purity to hard work and humility. The life lessons within these pages teach sons how to cultivate integrity, follow True North, avoid victimitis, hang with the wise, laugh at political correctness, train for adversity, seek God first, make no excuses, build productive habits, and much more.

Shooting from the heart, Tommy Newberry and Curt Beavers—men of faith, influencers, entrepreneurs, and battle-tested dads themselves—offer an engaging, highly personal collection of potent insights, a just-in-time antidote to the empty counterfeits that today’s culture tries to pass off as wisdom. At the end of each chapter, simple yet carefully crafted questions invite deeper conversations between dads and sons.

Relevant to any man, but especially tailored for fathers and their teen or pre-teen sons, I Call Shotgun will help you to instill character in the boys who are growing into men right before your eyes—and it might just sharpen your own character in the process.

Recommended for fathers everywhere!
By Tabatha Chovanetz
I cannot say enough about the book "I Call Shotgun" by Tommy Newberry & Curt Beavers. The book is intended for fathers to read with their sons. It has 64 "lessons" from dad to son. The authors even included conversation starters at the back of the book. The "lessons" are written in letter form from the author to their own sons, but I can tell you as a mom reading the book I was extremely pleased that there are fathers out there that care enough to write this book. I think much of what they have to say is exactly what any parent would say to their child. I could not wait to pass this book along to my husband to read with our teenage son. The book is full of moral lessons, values and ideas to create not just a legacy with your son but to provide some guidance that will help them become better men and fathers themselves. The book tells us what we have all long known to be a fact, and that is that dads everywhere need to spend time with their sons to establish a relationship with them or someone else will! And who wouldn't rather see dads be the major influence in their son's lives? The point `if you build a relationship with you son then it will likely last a lifetime' is driven home in this book. I would highly recommend "I Call Shotgun" to fathers everywhere! This would be a great parenting book for instilling character in your son at most any age!
I received this book free of charge in exchange for my honest opinion. These opinions are mine and mine alone.

A great conversation starter for Dads
By W. Kevin Gilbert
Being a father of two boys, and being the son of a father that's passed on, this book comes at a great point in time for me as I try to be the best dad I can be without having the luxury to seek my own father's advice. The short chapters presented as letters to the author's sons serve as great material for starting conversations with my own sons. There is great wisdom and insight in this book, even if you find yourself not agreeing with some of the authors' more political viewpoints, as a couple of reviewers noted. This seems to be more and more common in our society. When we disagree with a viewpoint presented by someone, we want to vilify them and nullify everything they say. I choose to look for the positives and leave the negatives behind. Follow that approach, and you'll find lots of positives in this book.

Timeless Principles
By Kenneth Ashley
Its really hard to be a father today - our culture is pervaded with negativity and attacks on success. I want my kids to be independent in their thinking and in their finances! I want them to be confident and successful in all areas of life and most importantly to take personal responsibility for their actions.

Tommy Newberry has written the book I wish I had the talent to write. We have had some very rich conversations in my family around these topics because of I Call Shotgun. What our children so urgently need more than excuses for failure, certainly money, more video games or iWhatevers is our take on bedrock, timeless principles. Mr. Newberry nails it in this book and you will find it a great way to have conversations with your children that you *should* be having. You are the only one that can make this happen; not school, and not some mythical fad that will correct whatever ails them. Buy this book and use it as a tool to have multi-generaltiona impact on your kids and their kids. Start a new tradition or two and you may just change little lives in ways you couldn't even contemplate. Turn parenting into a verb again.

Media in the Digital Age, by John V. Pavlik

Digital technologies have fundamentally altered the nature and function of media in our society, reinventing age-old practices of public communication and at times circumventing traditional media and challenging its privileged role as gatekeepers of news and entertainment. Some critics believe these technologies keep the public involved in an informed discourse on matters of public importance, but it isn't clear this is happening on a large scale. Propaganda disguised as news is flourishing, and though interaction with the digital domain teaches children valuable skills, it can also expose them to grave risks.

John V. Pavlik critically examines our current digital innovations& mdash;blogs, podcasting, peer-to-peer file sharing, on-demand entertainment, and the digitization of television, radio, and satellites& mdash;and their positive and negative implications. He focuses on present developments, but he also peers into the future, foreseeing a media landscape dominated by a highly fragmented, though active audience, intense media competition, and scarce advertising dollars. By embracing new technologies, however, Pavlik shows how professional journalism and media can hold on to their role as a vital information lifeline and continue to operate as the tool of a successful democracy.

The Last Day of a Condemned Man, by Victor Hugo

"Before hearing my death sentence I was aware that my lungs breathed, that my heart beat, and that my body lived in the community of other men; now, I plainly saw that a barrier had sprung up between them and me. Nothing was the same as before." The imprisoned narrator of this profoundly moving novel awaits execution—and waits, and waits. Although his guilt is undeniable, his essential humanity emerges as he struggles with the certainty of impending death.
Victor Hugo's impassioned early work carries the same power and universality as Les Misérables. A vocal opponent to the barbarity of the guillotine, Hugo attempted to arouse compassion in the service of justice. This tale distills his beliefs and offers a highly significant contribution to the ongoing debate over the death penalty. A new Foreword by activist David Dow examines the message and relevance of Hugo's story to modern society.

Relevant to Today!
By Nicole Matson
I originally read the French version of this book, with a preface (which is probably in the English translation, no doubt) that is an essay of the reasons to abolish the death penalty. Abolishing "la peine de mort" was the point of this book, published in 1830, a year before Hugo published Notre-Dame de Paris (a.k.a. The Hunchback of Notre-Dame); Hugo was 27. The essay logically spells out why the death penalty should be abolished; the actual narrative of the story - a journal that the main character keeps of his every thought and feeling in the six weeks from his sentencing to the moment before he is taken to the Place de Greve to be guillotined - moves the reader emotionally. What was relevant in France in the 18th cent. is relevant in the U.S. today.

The Last Day of a Condemned Man: A Classic
By Daniell Marafon
After reading Les Miserables I bought The Last Day of a Condemned Man, I was not expecting an masterpiece like Les Miserables and, because of that, I had such a great surprise, it's a short book but with an energetic message, it shows the horrors of the condemned, the psycological efects in his person when hes own daughter do not recognize him, everiday expecting only death, and with feeling, truth and talent, Victor Hugo show us why the penalty of death is horrendous to anyone.

Tough, emotional read but a Necessity for Anyone Interested in Death Penalty
By Cory McLitus
Victor Hugo's "The Last Day of a Condemned Man" may be a short read, but it is by no means an easy one. Not necessarily enjoyable in the usual sense, "The Last Day..." is an important and powerful work in opposition to the death penalty. The book reads like the thoughts and journal of a condemned man in France, who is given six weeks to live. The reader is forced to delve into the thoughts and fears of a man that we never really get to know in a sense; we are told very little about his life, and told practically nothing about the crime he has committed that has led him to prison and to be sentenced to death. But that is Hugo's point -- that capital punishment is so inhumane that it should not matter the crime, or the details, or who a person is, only that the sentence is so cruel and unusual that it should not be an option.

This was an especially interesting read for me as I work in a law office that represents people on death row in their appeals, and some of the ideas in this short novel are interestingly at odds with the work we do. One thing David Dow mentions in the foreword is how death penalty litigation is heavily focused on individual stories and individual cases, trying to show how and why a certain client should not be put to death, but that Victor Hugo's novel approach to death penalty discussion, the idea that it does not matter who the criminal is or what the circumstances are of the specific case, is an important one. It was fascinating to feel how compelled I was and how sympathetic the main character could be even when I knew nothing of his circumstances or what he had done.

This short novel can definitely be tough to get through (it's quite short page-wise but took me a few sittings because I could only take in so much at a time) but I think it's an incredibly important intellectual work to read if one is interested in the death penalty. This should honestly be required reading for anybody involved in the criminal justice system, if not everybody period.

Syria, 1970. Michael Howell has kept his family’s Middle Eastern business enterprises going through a decade of takeovers, war, and revolution, thanks in part to his office manager, Teresa, who is also his mistress. One late night at the office, they discover men working overtime—producing unauthorized bombs for the Palestine Action Force. Worse, this guerrilla terrorist group is not deterred by their discovery—rather, they will enlist Howell and Teresa’s unwilling help in carrying out their plan.

‘Ambler towers over most of his newer imitators'

—Los Angeles Times

About the Author
Eric Ambler was born into a family of entertainers and in his early years helped out as a puppeteer. However, he initially chose engineering as a full time career, although this quickly gave way to writing. In World War II he entered the army and looked likely to fight in the line, but was soon after commissioned and ended the war as assistant director of the army film unit and a Lieutenant-Colonel. This experience translated into civilian life and Ambler had a very successful career as a screen writer, receiving an Academy Award for his work on The Cruel Sea by Nicolas Monsarrat in 1953. Many of his own works have been filmed, the most famous probably being Light of Day, filmed as Topkapi under which title it is now published. He established a reputation as a thriller writer of extraordinary depth and originality and received many other accolades during his lifetime, including two Edgar Awards from The Mystery Writers of America (best novel for Topkapi and best biographical work for Here Lies Eric Ambler), and two Gold Dagger Awards from the Crime Writer's Association (Passage of Arms and The Levanter). Often credited as being the inventor of the modern political thriller, John Le Carre once described Ambler as 'the source on which we all draw.' A recurring theme in his works is the success of the well meaning yet somewhat bungling amateur who triumphs in the face of both adversity and hardened professionals. Ambler wrote under his own name and also during the 1950's a series of novels as Eliot Reed, with Charles Rhodda. These are now published under the 'Ambler' umbrella.

Good Suspense, Intriguing Characters, Good History
By Michael Wischmeyer
A Levanter is an inhabitant of the Levant, the countries of the eastern Mediterranean.

I am new to Eric Ambler. In recent months I have read and reviewed two stories from his early career, A Coffin for Dimitrios (1939) and Journey into Fear (1940), one from his mid-career (The Light of Day, 1962), and now his 1972 novel, The Levanter.

His early writing career was interrupted by WWII. Entering as a private in the Royal Artillery and serving in Italy, Ambler was later assigned to a combat photographic unit. Ambler ultimately earned the rank of lieutenant colonel and although British, he was even awarded an American Bronze Star.

His postwar career focused more on writing screenplays for Hollywood and television, but he did continue to write an occasional new espionage story. The Levanter (1972) was among his last books.

His early stories have exciting plots, but his early characters lack the fascinating complexity of his misguided and all-to-clever protagonist, Michael Howell, found in the Levanter. I quite enjoyed The Levanter and I believe that it compares favorably with the early John LeCarre novels.

In The Levanter Ambler tells a story through the eyes of three characters: Lewis Prescott (an experienced journalist interested in Michael Howell's situation) in chapters 1, 3, and 8, Michael Howell himself in chapters 2, 4, 6, and 7; and Teresa Malandra (Michael's secretary and lover) in chapter 5.

The setting is 1970 Syria, three years after the Six Days War. The Baathist Party, in power since 1963, has been steadily nationalizing all industry and Michael Howell considers his family's (third generation) commercial holdings at great risk. His plans to cleverly shelter his Syrian operations come apart when he involuntarily becomes an integral component in a plot to launch a substantial terrorist attack on Israel.

I was disconcerted by one aspect of Ambler's story. Despite the passage of three decades, The Levanter still reads like a contemporary novel. Today, for political and security reasons Israel still holds territory acquired during the Six Days War while the Syrian Baathist party continues to covertly (and not so covertly) support terrorist activities against Israel.

Ambler Turns his Eye to the Mideast
By Marco Antonio Abarca
Eric Ambler had a talent for setting his stories in historically interesting places and times. In the 1930's he wrote about the rise of facism. After the War, he wrote suspense stories set behind the newly erected Iron Curtain. In the 1950's, he switched his focus to Southeast Asia and wrote about the newly emerging nations of the region in the aftermath of their wars of liberation. So it is not surprising that in 1972, Ambler moved his attention to the Middle East and the Arab Israeli conflict.

Michael Howell is a classic Eric Ambler character. Although he has an English last name, Michael Howell's family heritage is principally a mix of Lebanese Armenian and Greek Cypriot. He is a member of that class of creative Eastern Mediterrean businessmen who over the centuries have successfully engaged in commerce in the notoriously difficult business climate of the Middle East. To survive in that harsh world, a businessman needs to be cosmopolitan, quick witted and highly imaginative. Michael Howell's family shipping business is doing well until he becomes unintentionally involved in the Palestinian Israeli conflict.

When Ambler is at his best, "Passage of Arms", "Judgement for Delchev" or a "Coffin for Demetrios", he is one of the finest political suspense writers to have ever graced the genre. The "Levanter" is very good but it is not one of his classic books. Start with the classics and when you have exhausted them, move to his second tier works like "The Levanter." Even his second tier works are very good.

Questionable Edition
By zebweb
The 2009 House of Stratus paperback edition of this very good book is full of typos--I have never seen so many in a published book before. It is as if someone was working from a recording of the book and trying to type it. There are so many phonetically spelled words--it simply gets in the way of reading it. I would not recommend this edition. It is a shame because this is a tough book to find. The Levanter

Review

"In this excellent book, Pugh very clearly establishes the role and significance of social and political movements in the development of foreign and defence policy [...] I commend this book to all who want to understand why peace movements

and other social movements for progressive social change are important." - International Peacekeeping

'With impeccable scholarship, Michael Pugh offers novel insights into interwar liberal internationalism in Britain. Erudite and authoritative, this account will rightly become an indispensable point of reference for students and scholars alike.'

- Richard Caplan, Professor of International Relations, University of Oxford, UK

'This is an important and erudite book. The 1930s are often seen as a 'lost decade' in

which appeasement led inevitably to the Second World War. Michael Pugh's careful

reading of the period reveals a much more complex story in which peace movements

had considerable success in laying down the foundations of what would later become

the rationale for international peace-support interventions and collective security.

This work is a useful antidote to many of the a-historical books on international

relations that assume the world began in 1989.'

Roger Mac Ginty, Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Manchester, UK

'Michael Pugh has produced a compelling, thought-provoking and highly readable assessment of the importance and lasting impact of interwar 'liberal internationalism' as a 'complex movement at once humane and superior, tolerant and dogmatic, universalistic and imperial'. While many of its leading intellectual proponents were later denigrated as hopelessly 'naïve' and 'idealistic', Pugh reveals a movement not only with a strong ethical dimension but one capable of 'pragmatic adaption to changes in international and domestic circumstances'. Above all, this is a study of liberal internationalism as an influential, if diverse and complex, social movement for peace. As such, and as Pugh persuasively shows, any assessment of its true impact and influence requires a longer-term historical perspective, one that extends well beyond the interwar period itself.'

- Mats Berdal, King's College London, UK

About the Author
MICHAEL PUGH is Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Bradford, UK, Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow (2011-12) and editor of the journal International Peacekeeping. He has written extensively on peace and conflict and is the co-editor, with Neil Cooper and Mandy Turner, of Whose Peace? Critical Perspectives on the Political Economy of Peacebuilding (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008).

An Ancient Evil Returns!

The "Dark Ships" invaded the skies over the Nown World proclaiming to all to be those of their old masters. "Submit or die!" was their only demand. No one chose to believe them.

The Nowns, according to ancient dogma, were once a noble race killed off by a terrible sickness known as "The Coughing." Great monuments were built in their honor, cities forever forsaken, and even the world named after them in memory. How could these invaders claim to be Nowns?

Horrible and uncaring the invaders brought terrors no one was prepared for. These Nowns were quite different from those of memory or legend. Entire villages began to disappear and those who survived told stories worse than told during "The Lurker War." The world had entered a new dark age.

Her only hope? Jatel, King of Illium and Karen, Queen of Idoshia. Together, ruling their united kingdom, faced their own challenges -- learning the true meaning of "change." From the mysterious land of the Xows an ancient magic awakens giving them all their only chance at freedom.

With war, vampires, fleets of dragons, and the reality of genocide, the Nown World soon faces its greatest darkness and a final glory with "THE RETURN OF KA-RON THE KNIGHT!"

Great Finale
By William D. Brown
See my review of the Misadventures of Ka-ron the Knight. Very touching ending. Good resolution although not all are resolved, but it left me hungering to follow the story even further.

I especially like Kirch's relaxed. "This is a story around the campfire" style of presentation.

Just as much fun as the first two, with a serious increase in the level of excitement
By Sally Bend
Making a triumphant return to the world of his Nown World Chronicles, Donald Allen Kirch brings us The Return of Ka-Ron the Knight.

In many ways, this third volume brings the entire tale full-circle, both in terms of narrative and world history. After a relatively straight (no pun intended) forward entry, in which genders remained fixed, even if they were sometimes disguised, Kirch makes Jatel victim of the same gender-bending curse as the man to whom he was once squire, and then husband, and now wife. It's interesting to see how he adapts to things, especially having been forewarned by Ka-Ron/Karen's experience, but I won't spoil the surprise.

At the same time, Count Voslow makes a rather surprising return, revealing the truth about his origins, his vampiric nature, and his role in world events. I really wasn't expecting to see him again after the middle volume, but I should have known a good vampire never rests for long. The way in which the world has evolved however, and the way the new settlements surrounding his castle have developed, both add some interesting depth to his role in the story.

Of course, once cannot talk about Count Voslow without mentioning the Nown. Mysterious figures from history, who have attained the status of legend, it turns out that Voslow is the only man left alive to remember who they are, where they came from, and where they left. Their return adds a significant science-fiction element to the saga, bringing the concept of alien invasion to a fantasy world. With no weapons of mass destruction, heavy duty armour, or any of the other scientific developments that usually see humanity triumphant in contemporary tales, Kirch's world is at a serious disadvantage.

Or, they would be, were it not for magic!

Just as much fun as the first two volumes, with a little more of the first book's erotic elements, but a serious increase in the level of excitement, The Return of Ka-Ron the Knight brings the story of Ka-Ron, Jatel, Keeth, and all the rest to a satisfying close.

The Noir Forties: The American People From Victory to Cold War, by Richard Lingeman

From one of our finest cultural historians, The Noir Forties is a vivid reexamination of America’s postwar period, that “age of anxiety” characterized by the dissipation of victory dreams, the onset of the Red Scare, and a nascent resistance to the growing Cold War consensus.

Richard Lingeman examines a brief but momentous and crowded time, the years between VJ Day and the beginning of the Korean War, describing how we got from there to here. It evokes the social and cultural milieu of the late forties, with the vicissitudes of the New Deal Left and Popular Front culture from the end of one hot war and the beginning of the cold one—and, longer term, of a cold war that preoccupied the United States for the next fifty years. It traces the attitudes, sentiments, hopes and fears, prejudices, behavior, and collective dreams and nightmares of the times, as reflected in the media, popular culture, political movements, opinion polls, and sociological and psychological studies of mass beliefs and behavior.

From Booklist
Lingeman inquires into America’s shift from New Deal liberalism to conservatism through the lenses of America’s late-1940s cultural and political scenes. He strives to see the change in society’s mood, whether induced by military demobilization, labor strikes, or Roosevelt’s succession by Truman, as it was reflected in the period’s signature movie genre, film noir. Summarizing the plots and productions of numerous titles, from the famous (Double Indemnity) to the less widely known (Detour), he juxtaposes noir’s expressions of alienation and cynicism, for example, against societal indicators of anxiety and divorce. Mixing in polls of popular complaints about prices and housing and reviews of popular songs and pulp fiction, Lingeman eventually devises an end-point of sorts with the ascendance of anticommunism, the blacklisting of Hollywood figures, and the exhaustion of film noir’s creativity. A work that never resolves whether it’s film history, political history, or lamentation for liberalism, Lingeman’s survey becomes everything by turns. Film noir is its attraction, and noir aficionados will decide whether Lingeman’s allied subjects, including his army service, interest them––or flip by them in the hunt for the next noir critique. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
"Lingeman's discussion of films is never less than interesting, and he understands the paradox of a politically repressive period leading to some of the most inventive films ever made.... Along with movies, The Noir Forties contains fine summaries of other arts-Lingeman is especially good on the exuberant mishmash of populist forms of music that emerged after the war."
New York Times Book Review

"When I skimmed through the pages, I began to relax-and felt enchanted. It was another world. Lingeman evokes a mood, place, time, and a feeling that only someone who'd been there can. Incredible writing....Remarkable insight. Thank you for giving the world this gift."
Oliver Stone, Academy Award-winning film director, screenwriter, and producer

"Lingeman's writing is clear and readable.... Both lovers of film noir and fans of social and cultural history will find this an excellent read."
Portland Book Review

"The Noir Forties is a rather eclectic book which employs elements of autobiography, history, and cultural studies.... [A] provocative book."
History News Network

"[The Noir Forties] does help us understand that time-and our time."
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

"[S]eamlessly written and stuffed full of original scholarship.... Lingeman beautifully blends the arts and music into his sweeping analysis of the politics of the period. Thus the 'voices of the people'- including artists-are heard here."
U.S. News & World Report

"[E]nlightening.... [Lingeman] excels at portraying the uncertain postwar mood and the way that films noir were uniquely able to capture that mood."
Barnes & Noble Review

"There's a lot of material here and it all flows together seamlessly. This is a great book for buffs of both film and history persuasions."
Library Journal, starred review

"In The Noir Forties, Richard Lingeman offers a vivid reexamination of the cultural, psychological, and political tenor of the 'age of anxiety.' Lingeman powerfully evokes the milieu of the late forties....The Noir Forties captures an incisive slice of American life during a period of quiet but seismic change."
History Book Club

"Lingeman attributes [noir] films' popularity to a correlation between these themes and the contemporary national psyche, elegantly using them as an accessible window into the spirit of an era struggling to digest the horrors of war, the dislocations of conversion to a peacetime economy and anxieties about the Soviet Union."
Kirkus Reviews

"[A] candid reappraisal of America's postwar era.... [T]he book's greatest triumph is in its depiction of the gradual change in the American populace's collective journey from the pessimism of the Great Depression, through the hope of a burgeoning postwar middle class, to a climate of fear in the McCarthy era and on into the cold war.... [A]n insightful and illuminating blend of history and cultural criticism."
Publishers Weekly

"Lingeman takes us past the platitudes about 'the Greatest Generation' to chart the painful transition from the collective ethos of the New Deal and wartime unity to the anxieties of the Cold War and a renewed rightwing offensive against working Americans. Compelling and enlightening."
Stephanie Coontz, author of A Strange Stirring: The Feminine Mystique and American Women at the Dawn of the 1960s

"This is an astonishing creation, a poignant, beautifully written history and memoir of a forgotten era. Richard Lingeman aptly calls it the Noir Forties, and his stylish prose blends the personal with delightful vignettes of American culture and politics. It is an elite brand of people's history. Lingeman's is a voice from the foxhole, soft-spoken and gentlemanly, but no less biting and acerbic than H.L. Mencken's."
Kai Bird, Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer and journalist. Co-author with Martin J. Sherwin of American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer

"Reading Richard R. Lingeman's masterful account of how America moved from its hottest to its coldest war, is more fun than going to the movies. Part memoir, part cultural, political and social history, his penetrating look at the post-war years through the lens of the noir films of the forties, is wholly original, a literary coup."
Victor S. Navasky, Publisher Emeritus of The Nation and author of Naming Names and The Art of Controversy

"By combining a thoughtful exploration of Hollywood's dark vision of a violent and immoral society with a penetrating overview of the nation's shift to the right during the late 1940s, Richard Lingeman helps us understand how the US could abandon its early post-war dream of peace and social justice for the conflict-ridden reality of the Cold War. It's a chilling narrative that speaks all too forcefully to our present grim situation."
Ellen Schrecker, author of Many are the Crimes: McCarthyism in America

"Richard Lingeman's lively and wide-ranging political and cultural survey captures the curious mix of self-confidence, ambition, anxiety, and moral exhaustion that defined the national psyche in the years between VJ-Day and the onset of the Korean War. Lingeman is a sympathetic chronicler of the generation that fought the Second World War. As we say farewell to the last surviving World War II vets in the decade to come, The Noir Forties will keep alive the world they encountered and made in the five years that followed the war, years when they were young and brave and seeking and healing."
Maurice Isserman, professor of history at Hamilton College, author of If I Had a Hammer: The Death of the Old Left and the Birth of the New Left

"Richard Lingeman ingeniously uses the noir films of the 'forties to plumb the unconscious of the national psyche and give us a deeper understanding of this pivotal period. Salted by his wry reminiscence of serving as a counter-intelligence agent in Japan, the author weaves his own experience of the era into a fascinating narrative."
Dan Wakefield, author of New York in the Fifties

Out of the Past
By The Ginger Man
In Noir Forties, Richard Lingeman documents the difficult American transition from post-war euphoria to stateside adjustment, illustrating the anxieties of the time through the filmmaker's lens. The author argues that no one knew what to expect after the victory over the Axis powers. During World War I, President Wilson sold a messianic vision in his Fourteen Points. FDR, on the contrary, referred to the second war as one of survival. Mindful of Wilson's failure to create his own new world, FDR refused to blueprint the future for fear of confusing the war effort. Lacking a postwar vision, "most Americans reverted to the personal and parochial," according to Lingeman. This absence of national purpose was compounded by FDR's death in 1945.

A Gallup poll showed that 62% of Americans feared a serious Depression within 10 years. GIs returned home to experience "reconversion jitters," finding shortages of jobs, food and housing. More importantly, they experienced an ambivalent reception from those who had stayed at home. Gratitude at veterans' service was combined with resentment towards their special claims and fear that they would commit violence in the US. In this unstable environment, the goal was to recover the past rather than to build an uncertain future.

As conservatives and the business community sought to roll back the New Deal at home and Communism abroad, a desire for conformity, tranquility and material wealth developed, leading ultimately to cold war consensus.

"All these moods merged into a vague sense of gloom and pessimism," says Lingeman. He argues that a special genre of American film captured this feeling. Film Noir expressed subconscious reactions to troubling social changes while reflecting the personal anxieties of the late forties. Rather than presenting an intellectual puzzle as in more traditional crime movies, noir films showed protagonists in downward struggles driven by personal flaws. Director John Houseman noted the prevalence in postwar crime films of an "outsider figure lacking confidence and alienated from the values and aspirations of mainstream society." Such scenarios resonated with returning vets or striking workers.

Lingeman does a good job of identifying how noir films fulfilled this need. Out of the Past and Asphalt Jungle told the story of a man trying to reintegrate into his old life, waylaid by his violent past. In The Blue Dahlia, a returning vet finds that his wife has been unfaithful and becomes a suspect in her death. Scarlet Street and Criss Cross also appeal to veterans who carried home suspicion about their wife's actions while away. Crossfire is a movie about discharged soldiers that is "seething with repressed violence." Double Indemnity shows that a normal citizen can be capable of an act of violence under the right condition. Femme fatales were featured in Laura and Gilda reflecting male anxiety about the stronger role of women at home during the war. DOA tells the feverish story of a man trying to find his own murderer after being given slow-acting poison. This mirrors the soldier's feeling that he is a dead man walking.

Noir Forties is solid social and cultural history. Lingeman combines an exhaustive understanding of American film with a strong feel for what transpires in politics and business. He has a marked liberal bias which is obvious in his distress at the end of New Deal liberalism as well as skepticism about the Red Scare. But this ideological stance is never hidden and can be taken into account by the reader. Lingeman also does a wonderful job conveying images as in an "R" rated take on VJ Day and a description of the repatriation of caskets to New York harbor.

The book provides new insight into an already well-documented period. It entertains while it it informs and tries to warn the reader when it subtly preaches.

The Noir Forties, a review
By William H. Young
A mainly political review of this tumultuous decade, written by an unreconstructed liberal who also happens to be a movie buff. Lingeman makes no apologies for his ideological leaning, a refreshing change from the many histories of the 1940s that strive for cold objectivity and bring little color to the period. Conservative readers will doubtless be annoyed by his support for Roosevelt, the New Deal, and Truman, while lambasting a "do nothing" Congress (Truman's phrase) that worked strenuously to block most progressive measures, especially in the postwar years. Lingeman buttresses his arguments by analyzing a bevy of Hollywood movies--including many that fall into the film noir category, bleak black-and-white exercises in pessimism that had considerable commercial success and reflected public anxieties about the Forties.
The author takes his text to the 1950 invasion of South Korea by its northern neighbor. He voices strong doubts about the wisdom of this war and how it brought to the front a fearful national awareness of a potential Communist threat. Added to this uneasiness, he discusses the paranoia that ran rampant Congress and led to witch hunts and loyalty oaths, culminating in the rise of McCarthyism and general distrust of anything remotely "red."
Written in an engaging style, history lives in The Noir Forties, a new look at how the decade shaped the remainder of the twentieth century.

A highwayscribery Book Report
By Stephen Siciliano
"The Noir Forties" promises less than it delivers.

By his own admission, author Richard Lingeman was counseled to shorten his manuscript, but you may find he did not achieve good enough a pruning.

Or, sometimes less is more. The author has an engaging idea about the collective American mind in the years immediately after World War II. Lingeman's proposal is to draw lines linking the particulars of that mind-state and what it projected onto movie screens in late 1940s America.

In films like "D.O.A.", "Double-Indemnity" "Blue Dahlia," and others, the writer says, "The war's psychological shocks reverberated through the popular culture, most prominently in the films noir that proliferated in the late '40s...."

Lingeman notes that strikes, a desperate rush for security, continued wartime rationing, the readjustment pains of 14 million veterans, were all moods that, "merged into a vague sense of gloom and pessimism, the reverse image of traditional American optimism and faith in the future. It tempered the victory dreams of postwar abundance, which seemed ephemeral to a generation scarred by the Depression."

In the book's best moments, the author weaves policy and news both big and small with films noir that serve as literary and cinematic parallels. The fun thing to do is watch the movies as he brings them up for discussion.

Having developed the idea a bit further, perhaps examined a few more films and drawn a more developed argument to completion, Lingeman might have had a sweet, pocket-sized seller that was attractive to a cross section of film fans/students and American politico/cultural buffs.

But it's his book and his call, and the author decided upon a path that winds into the "rouge" fifties of anti-communist propaganda films, the Korean War, and McCarthyism.

Mr. Lingeman served in the Korean War and a lot of what he presents in "Noir" is clearly of personal import to him.

A writer with "The Nation," his progressive analysis of President Franklin Roosevelt's absent vision for a post-war world, Harry Truman's capitulation to the country's most rancid and conservative forces, and the Red Scare, are all fine and good, especially if you have never delved into such topics in the kind of detail a knowledgeable journalist and political writer would.

Just know that's what your buying, that the focus on film fades (though is not completely abandoned), as the book goes on, replaced in its stead by something closer to a harrowing account of the shabby treatment endured by liberals, veterans, unions, and responsible scientists during what was, for many including the author, a kind of dark age.
