Feminist ConstitutionalismFrom Cambridge University Press

Constitutionalism affirms the idea that democracy should not lead to the violation of human rights or the oppression of minorities. This book aims to explore the relationship between constitutional law and feminism. The contributors offer a spectrum of approaches and the analysis is set across a wide range of topics, including both familiar ones like reproductive rights and marital status, and emerging issues such as a new societal approach to household labor and participation of women in constitutional discussions online. The book is divided into five parts: I) feminism as a challenge to constitutional theory; II) feminism and judging; III) feminism, democracy, and political participation; IV) the constitutionalism of reproductive rights; and V) women's rights, multiculturalism, and diversity. As a collection, the book seeks to examine, challenge and indeed redefine the very idea of constitutionalism from a feminist perspective.

Review
"Should a feminist constitutionalism exist, or a dialogue on constitutionalism that took feminist insights seriously, this book would be part of it. As things are, it calmly challenges limits and unsettles complacency by exceeding its own envelope, putting more solid ground under women's feet as it expands law's horizons."
- Catharine A. MacKinnon
From the foreword of Feminist Constitutionalism

"Feminist Constitutionalism offers a radically new perspective on the very foundations of our legal systems, going beyond 'feminism and the law' to assess the texts and traditions of the world's constitutions through the lens of gender justice. This latest contribution to a burgeoning new field draws together leading legal scholars from around the world, lifting us out of our legal parochialism, and confronting the masculine practices and assumptions of constitutional law. It is sweeping in scope, and eclectic in the best sense of the word. How, the authors ask, can constitutionalism be reconfigured to serve the interests of gender equality? In answering this question, this volume opens a window on a landscape that has long been overlooked. Every reader - whether feminist or not - will learn much from this book's engagement with the radical idea that constitutions are not gender-neutral."
Helen Irving
Professor of Law, The University of Sydney

"If dignity, liberty and equality shall make sense in our complicated worlds, and if democracy shall work in multilevel constellations of constitutional law, then this book is an important contribution towards it. A feminist intervention that deserves the name, diverse, transnational, and with a grip on the hard cases, this work proves to be a very inspiring read."

- Susanne Baer
Richterin des Bundesverfassungsgerichts, Professorin für Öffentliches Recht und Geschlechterstudien an der, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin & James W Cook Professor, University of Michigan Law School

     THE AUTHOR SCOOP

When did you know you were a writer?I’ve been writing since I was a kid and have always liked it. My Dad was the first one to teach me how to write. When I was about 10 or 11, I’d write in long, puffed up sentences using the biggest words I knew. When I’d proudly show my writing to my dad, he laugh and tell me that “I was enamored with the sound of my own words.” It took me a while to understand what he was trying to tell me: that good writing is about communicating with your reader. It’s the same thing with cooking. Good cooks don’t cook for themselves but for their guests. What was your first job?Washing dishes in a Chinese food restaurantWhat's the first concert you ever attended?I’m the youngest of three raised in the Bay Area. In 1968, I was 13 and my sister was 15. This was soon after the Summer of Love in San Francisco and my sister had been bugging our mom to let her go to a rock concert. My Mom was not about to let her go on her own so she took us both to see the Jefferson Airplane and Buffalo Springfield and the University of San Francisco Gymnasium. What's the history of your name?My given first name is John. I was given the name Janos by a Native American Chef I worked with in Boulder, CO in the mid-70’s.  For the last 20-25 years I’ve been working with a lot of ingredients originally, and in many cases, still farmed by Native Americans. Many of our guests like the link between the name and the ingredients we use. In fact, it’s purely coincidental. Janos is not a Native American name. The truth is there were just too many Johns in the kitchen at the time and the Chef, Robert, just started calling me by a nickname, which stuck.Who would you cast as yourself in a movie of your life?Danny DiVito

    Que viva el chile relleno!
    By L. Hilaire
My favorite item on the menu of any Mexican/New Mexican restaurant is the chile relleno. It is THE item I gauge the quality of the restaurant by. Unfortunately most restaurants do not make the grade. I have also searched high and low for good recipes, some basic ones along with some a little more adventuresome....this book has them all! There are step-by-step instructions, side-bar hints, lots of great pictures, simple and not-so-simple recipes - all devoted to the chile relleno. I am very happy with this purchase.

    By Bargain Bob
Recipes have too many difficult to obtain and expensive ingredients. Not for the home cook. Too many recipes refer to other recipes to complete dish. Too many side-dish recipes included. Book should have been formatted differently. More pictures would have been helpful for the home cook.

    Great Chile Relleno Recipes
    By trilingual1946
A wonderful little book full of great ideas for stuffing chiles (and a few other vegetables) with fillings both traditional and creative. Nicely produced and illustrated. This shows there's so much more to the food of Mexico than what's usually on offer in U.S. Mexican restaurants.

Yet not enough attention has actually been paid to young conservatives to test these claims—until now. In Becoming Right, Amy Binder and Kate Wood carefully explore who conservative students are, and how their beliefs and political activism relate to their university experiences.

    Review
    "[G]roundbreaking."--Publishers Weekly

"A deep dive into the under-examined world of campus conservatives, Amy J. Binder and Kate Wood's book can feel like an anthropological account of a disappearing tribe. . . . Binder and Wood's findings add an important dimension to our understanding of the right. The last two decades have seen historians and political scientists extensively study the rise of conservatism. A trenchant addition to that literature, Becoming Right offers a thick description of the state of college conservatism and explains the factors that shape the student--and, it follows, the citizen. The authors' interrogations leave the promise of a better politics hanging in the air: if Binder and Wood are accurate in their depictions, campus cultures that seek to build a stronger sense of community and ideological tolerance could be one key to a more civil national discourse. The book also enriches our understanding of the right's mentality. . . . Becoming Right yields many valuable insights about the possible future of conservatism. But the vision this illuminating book most vividly conjures is the depressing present of conservatism: ugly, unyielding, and provocative to the point of nihilism."--Elbert Ventura, New Republic

"In Becoming Right, Amy Binder and Kate Wood provide an in-depth and informative examination of who the conservatives are, the impact of campus culture on the formation of their identities and activist styles, and the implications for the direction of U.S. politics."--Glenn Altschuler, Boston Globe

"[I]f the intellectual interest of this book is the demonstration of how much influence the kind of university has on its students' political culture, a pleasure for the reader is the revelation of the sheer good nature of so many of the study's interviewees; they come across as pretty muddled on many issues but astonishingly rarely as nasty."--Alan Ryan, Times Higher Education

"[A] nice discussion of the larger field of conservative politics and how that affects campus protest. Overall, a solid book and one that's essential to studies of campus politics."--Fabio Rojas, Orgtheory.net

"Their book [is an] excellent, engaging, well written, and carefully researched study of the ways culture works in and through schools."--Lisa M. Stulberg, Contexts

"In their important contribution to the scholarship on modern American conservative movement politics, Binder and Wood analyze the varying experiences of conservative student activists on university campuses. The book succeeds on multiple levels."--Choice

"[T]he book is masterfully constructed and extensive in its articulation of the styles of young conservatives and how these diverge into political classes that may share many political beliefs but nevertheless seem worlds apart."--Jeremy Freese, American Journal of Sociology

"[T]his study offers as . . . insight . . . and permits . . . questions to reemerge [that] make this book an important and exciting contribution."--Gregory Smulewicz-Zucker, Critical Sociology

    From the Back Cover

"Becoming Right vividly illustrates how conservative students experience the university--and how these experiences differ by campus. This beautifully written book is a must read for anyone who seeks to understand the political socialization of conservative leaders and the sources of cleavages within contemporary conservative politics. Appealing to a wide audience, this is a powerful and original approach to the analysis of undergraduate life."--Elizabeth Armstrong, University of Michigan

"Social scientists have paid surprisingly little attention to conservative college students. Becoming Right remedies this with a penetrating analysis of the diverse political styles that can be found among students on the right, and of the campus settings that foster them. This important contribution to political sociology and the sociology of higher education has lessons to teach all readers about the complexity of the conservative movement and the passions of conservative collegians."--Neil Gross, University of British Columbia

"Offering a fascinating and nuanced portrait of young conservatives and their political commitments, Binder and Wood provide invaluable insight into this important but overlooked segment of American politics. Their analysis also illuminates the ways in which universities shape political identity and behavior, and is certain to stimulate new inquiries into the formation of political culture."--Julie A. Reuben, Harvard University

"The rise of conservatism on campus has been a central priority of well-funded think tanks and advocacy groups in their efforts to keep the pipeline full of potential leaders for each new generation. This splendid study of the contemporary campus right fills a huge gap in the public's understanding of the most recent wave of conservative cadre building."--Paul J. DiMaggio, Princeton University

"Becoming Right marshals novel, nuanced material to depict styles of conservative political organization at two U.S. universities. The big finding is that organizational context matters--a lot--for how undergraduates come to think of themselves as political subjects, how they act and react toward their campuses, and how they imagine their own futures. This book clearly demonstrates that political actors are made, not born."--Mitchell L. Stevens, Stanford University

    Partially Right
    By Ronald E. Robinson
Amy Binder and Kate Wood capture many truths about how and why young Americans become conservative, but this book has a number of factual errors and misses too much to be a principal source for understanding conservative groups. I will focus just on its mistakes relating to Young America's Foundation, the largest young conservative organization. On p. 81, the authors assert that a 501 c 3, like Young America's Foundation, is "officially prohibited from lobbying for legislation." Such entities have caps on how much they may spend, but if they opt in to lobbying permission under IRS regulations, as YAFoundation has, it is not prohibited. A few paragraphs later I learn we (yes, we!) are supported by David and Charles Koch, the Olin Foundation, and others. That would surprise the Kochs and the former Olin Foundation! Where did the authors get such a notion? From a report going back to 1985 by Media Matters. Young America's Foundation would love to be supported by the Olin Foundation and the Kochs, but it is just not the case. The authors suggest Young America's Foundation professors, like Robert George and Harvey Mansfield, are outliers to our programs. In fact, Robbie George is a frequent lecturer. "Outliers" could accurately be said of guest lectures by Nobel Laureates Lech Walesa, James Buchanan, and Vernon Smith, but regular lectures include Professors Walter Williams, Burt Folsom, Larry Schweikart, and others. These type of errors riddle the book and here is why: the authors rely on too many secondary sources, and in the YAF case on one former staffer, when they could have and should have interviewed the organizational leaders. At least they should have run some of their assumptions by its principals before publishing. They conclude YAF attracts "Joe Average" college student, using a stray and inaccurate comment of the former YAF conference director. In fact, a student who absorbs his or her normal academic load, but then attends special conferences, seminars, and lectures, are far from an average college "Joe" and the authors must know that! Finally, like other books by Leftists, the authors can't abide calling the groups what they identify as, except in the subtitle; we are "conservatives" not self-identified "Rightists!"

A very interesting book on undergrad conservatism. She explained the development and differences of conservative students very well and brought up many unique factors in the shaping of one's political beliefs.

The New Atlantis and The City of the Sun: Two Classic Utopias, by Francis Bacon, Tomasso Campanella

Two authors from The Age of Reason and Enlightenment, in keeping with the spirit of their times, envisioned their own philosophical and intellectual utopias. Tomasso Campanella, a Calabrian monk, published The City of the Sun in 1623, and Francis Bacon's The New Atlantis appeared in 1627. Campanella was a student of logic and physics who formulated the first scientifically based socialistic system — one that furnished a model for subsequent ideal communities. Bacon focused on politics and philosophy, emphasizing the duty of the state toward science. Despite the authors' differences in setting and treatment, each of these 17th-century classics mirrors the period's prevailing thought, reflecting the idealism of an age and its revolutionary trends in philosophy.

    From the Inside Flap
The New Atlantis by Lord Bacon is one of the most important of the Utopian writings because it envisions the advancements in all branches of learning in the Western Hemisphere. Strangely enough, Plato's description of the ancient Atlantean empire and Bacon's New Atlantis both end suddenly in the middle of a sentence. In 1660 a mysterious person known only as R.H. Esquire attempted to complete Bacon's unfinished book. There was never but one edition of New Atlantis Continued by R.H. Esquire.

This extremely rare literary curiosity belongs in all collections of Elizabethan literature and is invaluable to students of Bacon's writings and the Bacon-Shakespeare controversy.

The new edition is reset for the convenience of the modern reader, but there are no changes except the modernization of spelling and punctuation. The discussion of heraldry is of great interest to those collecting emblem books and cryptographic material in general. Certain errors in pagination may be intentional and pages in which these occur are reproduced in facsimile.

Tenison, Archbishop of Canterbury, notes that this book is "a great and hardy venture to finish after Lord Verulam's pencil." Sir Edwin During-Lawrence considers this book the most significant of Utopian publications. The volume also contains a poem by George Herbert honoring Lord Bacon. For this publication, Manly P. Hall has provided an introduction suggesting the scope of the work. This edition of New Atlantis Continued is limited to one thousand copies and is likely to be the only printing available to scholars for many years to come.

    About the Author

Two classic early utopias from the Age of Reason
    By Lawrance Bernabo
It had been nearly a century since Thomas More's "Utopia" had been published, and these two classic Age of Reason utopias spurred a revitalized interest in the genre that remains unabaited to this day. However, in proposing science as the ultimate source of human salvation, Francis Bacon and Tomasso Campnaella were taking an approach quite different from More in positing his utopia.
"The New Atlantis" is the philosophical and intellectual utopia envisioned by Francis Bacon. Published in 1627, the year after the author's death by his literary executor, speculation is that Bacon wrote his story in 1623 or 1624, which would be after his fall from political power. Unlike many of his other major works, Bacon wrote "The New Atlantis" in English and then had it translated into Latin, an indication that he intended it for a wider, English-speaking audience. Bacon focuses on the duty of the state toward science, and his projections for state-sponsored research anticipate many advances in medicine and surgery, meteorology, and machinery. Although "The New Atlantis" is only a part of his plan for an ideal commonwealth, this work does represent Bacon's ideological beliefs. The inhabitants of Bensalem represent the ideal qualities of Bacon the statesman: generosity and enlightenment, dignity and splendor, piety and public spirit.
Bacon breaks from Plato, Aristotle and other ancient writers by insisting that humans do not need to aspire to fewer desires because the extraordinary advances of science would make it possible to appease bodily desires by providing material things that would satisfy human greed. For Bacon there is no reason to waste time and energy trying to get human beings to rise to a higher moral state. In his conception of Solomon's House we see the what Bacon the scientist envisioned for the future of human knowledge in an unfettered intellectual setting. It is easy to see the modern research university is the utility of Bacon's great college. Ultimately, Bacon clearly sees the advances of science as the best way of increasing humanity's control over nature and providing for the comfort and convenience of all people, and England's Royal Society and similar organizations dedicated to scientific progress are generally regarded as embodying Bacon's utopian vision.
Tomasso Campanella was a Calabrian monk who published "The City of the Sun" in 1623, a utopian vision that certain reflects the idealism and revolutionary trends of thought in the Age of Reason. Campanella was a student of logic and physics who formulated the first scientifically based socialistic system, which makes "The City of the Sun" important because it serves as the model for all subsequent ideal communities. The earliest version was written in Italian in 1602, and was later revised in an abbreviated Latin version two decades later. It is this Latin version, which is better known, that is provided here, although the Italian work was published posthumously in 1637.
The tale here is told by a sea captain who has visited an island called Taprobane (quite possibly Sumatra). He tells of finding a land where there is community property, labor is divided equitably among the people, and there is no need for money. In "The City of the Sun" all of the inhabitants work towards the common good, entrusting their government to the wisest and ablest among them, and prizing equality and self-sacrifice for the sake of the community above all. The system is so efficient that all work is completed in a four-hour work day. The influences of not only Sir Thomas More but Plato is clearly seen in this utopian vision, especially in the notion of scientifically controlling breeding.
However, like More, Campanella discourses on the topics of religion, justice, and war. The religion of the City of the Sun is clearly Christianity, but with sun figures representing God in the temples and the clergy being pure in their conduct (remember, Campanella lived the monastic life). The head of the government is called Hoh, and his chief ministers are Pon (Power), Sin (Wisdom), and Mor (Love). Clearly the Hoh (which means metaphysics) is fashioned after Plato's philosopher-king, since he has to know all of the sciences, as well as metaphysics, theology, and the history of all kingdoms and their governments. Science is what drives this utopia (which comes from Telesius rather than Plato), which develops power-propelled ships and flying machines, and which will create the ideal world Campanella envisions.
The obvious comparison is between the utopias of Campanella and Bacon, but the former goes much farther is developing his seven-sided city than the latter, where Bacon is concerned primarily with emphasizing the duty of the state to foster scientific research. However, both utopias underscore the idea that science will solve the evils of this world. These early utopias do not usually receive as much consideration as the dystopian novels of the 20th century, but the works of Campanella and these others certainly represent the utopian ideal in its purest form.

    R. H. Esquire edition - Read with Caution
    By Verbs
I haven't read the Esquire edition, but I nevertheless would strongly suggest the regular edition. It might be interesting what someone else added to Bacon's work after the fact, but you should really read the original Bacon first.
As for the real New Atlantis, it is a great read, but it will only really make sense in combination with the New Organon. In NO, Bacon discusses his new scientific method and how it is to be carried out; in NA, he provides an idealistic society who is carrying out that method.

I'm glad I read it, more or less
    By A Customer
Hmm, this is interesting. Despite the convoluted prose I was able to plow through this in a couple days (it's less than 50 pages long). The cover and all looks cheap on this edition but it's the content that counts, and the content is interesting. NEW ATLANTIS posits an alternate history for America and is intended to supply an example of a Utopian, scientifically overachieving society. It's an interesting look at the philosophy, symbolically expressed, of a man considered a great "rational" philosopher. Not bad.

Hebrews (Vol. 1): An Anchor for the Soul: 001 (Preaching the Word), by R. Kent Hughes

The book of Hebrews conveys a double dose of spiritual power. It not only presents the greatness of Christ in ways no other New Testament writing does, but it repeatedly demands a heart response from the reader. No one can study Hebrews and not grow spiritually and come face to face in a new way with Christ.

It is also true that no New Testament book has had more background research than Hebrews, and none has spawned a greater diversity of opinion. However, virtually all agree that the grand theme of this epistle is the supremacy and finality of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Life-changing themes come from God to us in this marvelous epistle. The unequalled glories of Jesus Christ—the solemn danger of drifting away from dependence on divine grace—a heavenly high priest who understands and is ever ready to help—the rest only God can give, even in the middle of trials and of demanding ministry—the hope that is ours through a blood covenant with an awesome God—these and other topics from Hebrews must be understood and put to work practically if we are to live and serve as God's people today.

Those who preach, teach, and study the Word of God will find this book a gold mine of helpful discussion a Bible book easily misunderstood and often overlooked. With divisions and outlines that are never forced but flow naturally from the text, Hebrews will be a great resource for all who desire to communicate God's truth and seek to grow in their own faith through personal Bible study. Part of the Preaching the Word series.

Very Helpful For Pastors & Bible Students
    By David A. Bielby
I pastor a Vineyard Church in Central Illinois, and am working through Hebrews right now with our congregation. I have a number of commentaries that I have grown to love on Hebrews, but this one by Kent Hughes has risen to the top of my list of late.

The principal reasons for this are:

    1) Ease of reading. This commentary is pleasant to read, and intelligently put together.

    2) Clear and insightful exegetically based comments on not only the text, but the O.T. quotations that Hebrews commonly cites are commented on with thoughtful depth. Very helpful.

    3) Application ideas are sprinkled throughout the text regularly, which is a great source of illustrations for a preaching pastor/teacher of the bible.

    4) It is clear that Dr. Hughes has dealt thoughtfully with the original text without communicating over the heads of a typical Christian leader/reader in our culture.

    5) He also integrates in densely written and clearly written paragraphs sweeping summaries of the historical backdrop that is relevant to the key points of a passage. For example in Hebrews 4:14-16 he points out that the Stoics, Epicureans and Jews all would have been stunned by Jesus' claim to compassionately represent God the Father in a suffering way. He explains with simple, nutshell style terminology why this is so. Very helpful stuff....and demonstrates a command not only of the Greek text, but also of the historical and cross cultural contexts of the N.T. era.

I don't always agree with his conclusions, but it would be unwise in my opinion to ignore Hughes on Hebrews. I was able to get very nice copies used through Amazon and am very pleased with vol. 1 and 2 of the Hebrews series.

Great Reference tool for a sometimes difficult NT book
    By William D. Curnutt
    R. Kent Hughes does it again with a great commentary on a New Testament book. Hebrews is sometimes not the easiest of books for people to understand, but Hughes does a great job of bringing the text into the light and giving us a good handle on the material.

I especially suggest this resource for the teachers in our Adult Bible Fellowship classes. They are usually non-seminary trained individuals who find Hughes writing a great tool in assisting their preparations for teaching.

Any of the commentaries in the Preaching the Word Series are highly useful.

    Great
    By flo
I ordered this 3 book package for my husband. And I know ge wont do a review so I wil do one based on his reactions. He is preparing for the FRC ortho examine and uses a combination of study tools. He saw this package on the net and immediately ordered it to supplement his studies. It was a great decision. He uses them all the time. He loves the conciseness of it too.

    Pre-exam early reading probably best
    By McLovin
Found it too late and ran out of time pre-exam. After the exam I used it to prop up an old table that was a bit rickety.
