a mixed collection of devotions

This slim volume is a collection of devotions. A few are from the Bible and are excellent.
For example, there is a meditation entitled Obstacles Strengthen Faith. The lesson is about Moses. "Whatever our 'slavery' is, we walk with Moses the uncharted road away from the chains of the past." There are several points made as to the reason we experience false starts and dead ends.
To Enlarge Our Vision. Moses had a dream but it was too small. God had to bring him to the wilderness to learn that God's plan for Moses was much larger.
To Give Us Specific Training. God knew Moses would need the skills of a desert sheepherder. Those years in the desert were ones of preparation for what lay ahead.
To Reveal Himself. God revealed Himself and gave Moses his true work.
To Temper Our Faith. Moses led the people, but not in a straight line to their destination. A faith that encounters no obstacles crumbles with the first opposition.
To Give Us Another Chance. Even at the door of the Promised Land, the people panicked and ended up with forty more years of training. "The qualities nurtured and strengthened on desert marches will prove us fit for life in His kingdom."
The meditation ends with the following prayer:
"Lord, let me learn the lessons of the wilderness through which You are leading me this month...so that I will be prepared to meet the future!"

There are others from the Bible. Elisha suggests our own need for a spiritual companion who travels the road ahead of us. Jonah reminds us that God brings back those who stray.
Many of the devotions are not from the Bible. The gift of a prism causes awe. Lessons from interviews with noted people. Sherrill draws from many of her own experiences, such as how they came to write for Guideposts, and scenes and experiences from their travels. Many of the devotions are from stories of other people's lives.

I am not sure I understand the organization of the meditations. The first ones gave me the impression the readings would roughly go through the books of the Bible. But then began devotions from life. Some are quite moving while others are rather routine. Then, about half way through are Advent devotions. Then Easter week devotions from the gospels follow, and, after a few others, including another Christmas one, Pentecost meditations. Then there is a devotion for Lent. After several routine devotions, one for St. Patrick's Day. Then one about a January afternoon.

I think the strength of this book would be for one who is asked to give a devotion to a group and needs a resource. One of these meditations could be chosen to read. Too bad there is not some kind of index included.
Otherwise, I am not so enthusiastic about this book. A few of the devotions are inspiring but I found most to be "nice" stories.
For me, the book did not live up to its title of inspiring me to listen to God.

About The Author: Elizabeth Sherrill has published some more than thirty books-many cowritten with her husband John-including The Hiding Place, The Cross and the Switchblade, and God's Smuggler. For more than fifty years, Elizabeth has been a writer and editor for Guideposts magazine and a contributor to Daily Guideposts. The couple's writing often still keeps them on the road here and abroad, about half the time. The Sherrills have three children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and are occasionally at home in a small town in Massachusetts.

My Thoughts On The Book: Obstacles Strengthen Faith is one of my favorite spiritual pieces in the book. It begins with four books of the Bible that go along with the story of our traveling companion, Moses. A story of Moses follows and a prayer is at the end of the reading. Expect the Best was my favorite non-spiritual piece. The scripture for the reading is from Porverbs 23:18 and says, "Thine expectations shall not be cut off.ollows is about a cross-country plane trip and a seven-year-old. The prayer that follows this story is about looking for the good in others and how looking for it helps the good to show. I loved the whole book and was delighted with the intertwining between Bible stories and real-life stories. This is a must read and a must have! It would make a wonderful gift.

Learning to listen to God

101 Moments of Prayer by Elizabeth Sherrill contains what Elizabeth calls her little epiphanies from her everyday life that God used to spur on little stories of spiritual insight. Stories from her days of traveling, vacations, and ordinary daily life. Also included are `Your traveling companion is ...' devotions.

I found her stories to be encouraging and uplifting. Her insights are definitely a God thing because she was willing and open to listen to the still small voice regarding what she initially considered just everyday occurrences. Our everyday occurrences are always a moment for God to speak to us if we are listening.

Though I loved the whole book, my favorite section was the `Your traveling companion is...' devotions. It sounds like she was just wrapping up a year's worth from the books of the Bible. I would love to have read them all!

It's been a while since I've read Guideposts, but these two books make me want to check the magazine out again. My only regret is that they are eBooks. I would love to have print copies to read and mark when they touch my heart. My God moments.

About the Author
Michelle Bennett is a Melbourne-based writer and editor who's always been intrigued by the notion of 'taking the water'. This lead her to write a thesis on Australian health spas and retreats back in the mid-'90s, a time when things were starting to take off in this industry. Since then she's been waiting for the perfect moment to write these books, for the 'wellness revolution' to be in full swing. She was thrilled that she got to take a lot of water - and massages, and facials, and yoga poses etc - in the process.

An excellent concise guide for men with prostate cancer.

Dr. Moyad has an enviable ability to condense information about prostate cancer, diagnostic techniques, treatment options and desirable lifestyle changes in a manner easily understood by the lay person. Since most men with prostate cancer will die of something else, the author stresses heart healthy habits, giving excellent suggestions on dietary guidelines and exercise techniques. He discusses criteria for active surveillance - not exactly the same as watchful waiting - an option that more men with low grade prostate cancer are choosing. Moyad is professor of preventive and alternative medicine at the U. of Michigan, but he is rather restrained in his recommendations of herbal remedies. He in not a fan of megadose medication. Indeed, he cautions against certain agents known to have deleterious side effects. I highly recommend this book. You should also read his No BS Health Advice. The BS also stands for Bad Science. It exposes many current worthless and harmful fads and remedies.

For men with advanced prostate cancer, Dr. Moyad has written Promoting Wellness beyond Hormone Therapy.

American publishers never read anything, they edit by spellcheck. The editorial reverence retained for British writers leaves loads of misspellings, misplaced homonyms and more female dithering about clothes and food than I can tolerate, especially in "Cornwall". I've always thought it a weakness of character to start a book and throw it down, this one hit the wall at page 24.

About the Author

Burton Watson is one of the world's best-known translators from the Chinese and Japanese. He received the PEN translation prize in 1981. His translations include The Lotus Sutra, The Vimalakirti Sutra, Ryokan: Zen Monk-Poet of Japan, Saigyo: Poems of a Mountain Home, and The Columbia Book of Chinese Poetry: From Early Times to the Thirteenth Century, all published by Columbia. This book presents Watson's renowned translation of a Chinese philosophy classic in pinyin romanization for the first time.

Confucian thought continued

Xunzi followed Mencius, Confucius, and the other better-known names of Chinese philosphical history. He represents an interesting departure from them, though.

He holds the same high regard for order, hierarchy, and ritual as the earlier Confucians. He combines it with some of the thinking from other schools, though. He flirts with Han Fei Tzu's Legalist pessimism about human nature. Xunzi, however, asserts that proper behavior can be learned and taught. Deep understanding would be best, but even rote performance of one's proper roles and rituals are enough to save people from their innate flaws. He also takes on some of Chuang Tzu's mysticism. Xunzi's "sage" seems almost to spread his upright influence just by standing among the lesser people, with a magical lack of causal relationship.

It's clear that Xunzi wrote as one among many different schools of thought. He spends a good bit of time explaining the errors of the competing philosophers, making it clear that his own thinking needed justification in that environment. He does, however, add a few notes of his own. For example, section 9 describes a king's duties. The king, through his deputies, is expected to regulate fishing, forestry, and other use of renewable resources. This is not meant to deprive anyone or to enrich the king artificially, but to keep the resources productive for the long term. How I wish that today's leaders would learn from the knowledge of 300BC.

Xunzi was not among the first rank of influential thinkers, but well up in the second rank. If you are building a library of Eastern classics, this certainly has a place on your shelf.

PS: This appears to be the same material as Watson's "Hsun Tzu" (ISBN 0231086075). The only difference seems to be the romanization, the convention for English spellings, used in the two books.

Xunzi, 321 BC, is one of he very few philosophers that declares Man's nature is evil to which he adds, "Goodness is the result of conscious activity." That is not as far removed from for example Buddhism as one might think. Buddhism teaches that man has good and bad tendencies and must train their mind with meditation to overcome the negative ones. Xunzi like Buddha insists even more on the necessity of training the mind to become a good person.
Xunzi describes man as " The nature of man is such that he is born with a fondness for profit. If he indulges this fondness, it will lead him to wrangling and strife, and all sense of courtesy and humility will disappear. He is born with feelings of envy and hate. Man is born with the desires of the eyes and ears. The eye's fondness for beautiful forms, the mouth fondness for delicious flavors, or the body's fondness for pleasure and ease-these are all the products of the emotional nature of man. They are instinctive and spontaneous". "If he indulges in these, they will lead him into violence and crime."
"Therefore man must be transformed. That part of man, which cannot be learned or acquired by nature, is called human nature; that part of him which can be acquired by learning and brought to completion by effort is called conscious activity. This is the difference between nature and conscious activity." This description is also very similar to Buddhism.
Xunzi also makes interesting comments about rulers and ruling a country. " The legitimacy and survival of the ruler rests ultimately upon the support of the people: he is a boat, they the water which may bear him up or capsize him as they choose. No claims of hereditary right or iron discipline can hold out forever in the face of popular indifference or anger. A King enriches his people, a dictator enriches his soldiers, a state that is barely managing to survive enriches its high officers, and a doomed state enriches only its coffer and stuffs its storehouses. "
"The ruler is one who is good at organizing men in society. There has never been an enlightened ruler who succeeded by keeping secrets from his ministers. If the ruler is open with his ministers, then honest advice will reach his ears and slanderous reports will cease. Gentlemen will draw close to him and petty men will disappear."
Xunzi was one the first that recognized the importance of people understanding a word the same way which he referred to as "rectifying names". "If there are no fixed names but men begin to discriminate on the basis of their own particular observations, each applying his own names, and interpreting the different phenomena in his own fashion, then the relationships between names and realities will become obscured and entangled, the distinction between "eminent" and "humble" will become unclear." A good example to day is the word "liberal" in politics.
If you like these comments, you should buy the book and find many, many more. The book shows that even though a lot changed since 321 BC, human nature is still the same.
Xansa's ideas had considerable influence on the rulers of the Han Dynasty. He was a follower of Confucius but differed on several important points. He criticized some of the teachings of Mencius, Mo Tzu and Han Feizi, some of it, in my view justified, in others not.
