Great Start to a New Series!!!
By CathyP
If you enjoyed Lynnette Bernard's Beckett's Wolf Pack Series ("Laurie' Love" and "Babies for Nikki"), then I can guarantee you will love Lynnette's new Cowboys Mates, Psychic Connection Series!!!

John Blackstone had a vision when he was just fourteen years old; and in that vision, he saw his future mate -- Jamie Montgomery. However, it took 22 long years before Jamie came into his life.

Jamie came to live at her cousin's Deuce McKade's ranch. Jamie has not had an easy life. She was born to older parents and spent most of her life as a caregiver and isolated (since her parents didn't approve of Jamie having friends).

When Jamie comes to live with the McKade's, John knows that something traumatic has happened to Jamie; but John tells Jamie that she is his mate and that they are destined to have a family and spend their lives together.

The story is pure romance; it is how John and Jamie struggle to get past what has happened to Jamie. Of course, Lynnette keeps you in suspense for a good part of the book which I loved!!!

You do know that a person from Jamie's past (Brad) is released from prison; and that Brad is sending Jamie threatening text messages telling her that he is coming for her so that he can exact his revenge.

I love how you are introduced to the McKade Cousins and also a number of female characters. It is made apparent rather early in the story that each McKade Cousin will be getting his own story, and I can't wait to read them all; and I believe that the next story coming out will be Deuce and Gracie's story called "Touching Deuce".

A new series from the author of The Beckett Pack serirs
By DelAnne
Title: John's Vision
Author: Lynnette Bernard
Psychic Connections Cowboy Mates series Book 1

John Blackstone, of Cheyenne and Italian descent, has known from the time he was 14 years old that Jamie was destined to be his mate. His vision quest had shown him that they would be together and would have a family. Jamie Montgomery, is running scared. She feels she cannot escape an evil from her past that is re-emerging to threaten her and all she holds dear, emotionally scarred as well as physically. She feels their is no hope left for her. He has found her again and this time she has nowhere left to run where she feels safe, but neither can she remain at her cousin's ranch and endanger everyone else.

Jamie is so tired of running. With no one to confide in she feels isolated, vuneralble, and helpless to continue. Although attracted to John she knows she has nothing to offer him emotionally or physically. She must keep him and everyone else at a distance. John on the other hand is determined to claim his mate. He knows their joining will be blessed by the Spirits that blessed those on the McCade land in repayment for a kindness decades before. He knows his vision was true. Now he only needs to convince Jamie and keep her safe from the one who wants vengence and the life of Jamie Montgomery.

Lynnette Bernard has done it again. She has envisioned a story line that captivates and draws you in. Centered around the McCade Ranch, those that live there and their destined mates. A story the began long ago but continues today. You will laugh, cry and worry over the people in these stories as if they were your own family. Eventually you will wish you could find a way to crawl into the book and become part of their family. Ms. Bernard's characters are bold and mullti-dementional. They become dear friends whom you will want to visit with often. Aren't you Lucky that Touching Deuce, book 2 in the series is out and book 3 is not that far behind. I know I am. I can not wait for the next installment of Psychic Cowboys to carry me back to the McCade Ranch and my new friends.

Lynnette Bernard has begun a new series with a different twist. The men and women of this series are connected through their connection to the past. The men are top of the line Alpha males with deep roots in family loyalty and an ingrained need to protect their mates and all the people in their family. A trait shared just as strongly by the women..

John has known since the age of 14 of his destined mate. Jaime has been running from a lunatic who has been terrorizing her since college. Just when she thinks she is safe at her cousin's ranch and can start over he finds her again and lets her know he is on his way to finish what he started in college. He also lets her know no on is safe from his wrath.

The McKade brothers and their extended family must band together to save Jaime and keep her safe. John has his work cut out for himself convincing Jaime to stop running and that in his arms and in his bed is the safest place there is. Can Jamie trust John's vision? Are the legend and The Great Spirit enough to take a chance on John and their blessed mating?

Lynnette Bernard is from a large and loving family and is also a talented author without a doubt, but she is also a survivor of life. Lynnette began writing her first book at the tender age of 14. She has known rejection of her work like most authors, but never gave up. She eventually was signed on with Siren Publishing, a smart move on their part. She has two series going at present but if you go to her website,[...] you will see she has many different novels swirling around in that busy mind of hers. I wish there was a quicker process to getting the raw ideas from her thoughts down onto paper (or computer). She is a writer through and through, like most authors she would probably bleed words if you were to cut her.

When she gets a moment to relax she likes to read almost anything she can get her hands on or go to the movies or the beach. Her greatest joy is her family, her children, brothers, sisters and mother. The strongest and greatest infuence in the making up the characteristics of her male heroes is her father. Many of the characteristics of her heroines come from Lynnette herself. In each and every book family is the main driving force. Children are nutured and loved just as Lynnette and her family cherish their children, as should we all. Her stories remind us that love shines bright in the darkness of adversity. It is how we face life's trials that makes us the people we are, fault and fallicies included. Bending is allowed but not letting it break us completely is how we grow in strength and character. Using that premiss I can honestly say Lynnette Bernard is one of the strongest women I know.

Lynnette Bernard believes in happily ever after just as most of us do. We know love is not perfect, but it can be the best thing in our lives. Sometimes we do not get it right the first time, but if we are lucky we do find it, until then we have authors like Lynnette to keep the hope of finding it alive in all of us. The creed Ms Bernard lives by would be the quote: "The heart knows what it needs." She truly believes and lives by this quote. Lynnette said it best herself when she stated, "Every one of us has a basic need for acceptance, kindness, and love. That's why every one of my books will always have a Happily Ever After, and the men and women will be kind and loving toward one another. Life is too hard. In my books, kindness and love will reign." Lynnette Bernard could be your neighbor or co-worker, a woman worth knowing.

Welcome to the McKade family. I loved it
By T London
I was introduced to Lynnette Bernard through a mutual friend. After talking with her about her books I was interested in this series because I am a fool for a family of sexy men who find their loves one at a time in a series. She didn’t disappoint me with this collection; it was hot, passionate and very steamy. John was a protective, alpha and had me won over immediately with his belief in the visions he saw and his love for Jamie. I also appreciate that Jamie, while being a victim and on the run, she was strong and independent. She wasn’t looking for a savior; she was running for her life and staying silent to protect her family, the McKade brothers.

So what do you do when a handsome man that makes your heart melt and your body heat up at the mere sight of him tells you that he had a vision of you when he was a teenager and you are his mate? Well after what Jamie has been through she wasn’t falling for that at all. Putting up her defenses she tries to keep her distance from this crazy man, but little by little John gets her to tell him what she is running from and how scared she is. Day by day, little things happen and comments were made that confirmed what John had been telling her and she was beginning to have a hard time resisting his charm and sex appeal, but he wants kids and wife, she didn’t think she would be around long enough to give him the wife part and kids were not even an option. Their love was beginning to be a reality when her past attacks and changes their path and the drama and intensity begins, keeping you on the edge of your seat with suspense and sighing at how wonderful those two are together.

John does live by his Native American heritage, but he also has a vision/psychic ability which took me a while to get into and find my comfort zone with. It was written very well and didn’t overshadow the love story or plot, but I had to find the learning curve since that is not my normal genre. Because she could win me over to this, explain it to me through the story and not with extra notes on the side, she impressed me greatly, giving me a wonderful new experience that I look forward to reading more about in this series.

I really LOVE the McKade family; I want to be adopted by them. Each brother has a quality about them that makes me go weak in the knees. I really enjoyed Lynnette’s writing style and her scene and character description. She doesn’t just give you as story to read; she opens the door to the McKade family home and welcomes you in to experience the events. I can hardly wait to get started on the next one in this series. I think I have become not only a fan of this author but an obsessed fan girl of the McKades. Go grab your copy now and be watching in the next couple of weeks for my review for Touching Deuce.

Promises and Contract Law: Comparative Perspectives, by Martin Hogg

Promises and Contract Law is the first modern work to explore the significance of promise to contract law from a comparative legal perspective. Part I explores the component elements of promise, its role in Greek thought and Roman law, the importance of the moral duty to keep promises and the development of promissory ideas in medieval legal scholarship. Part II considers the modern contract law of a number of legal systems from a promissory perspective. The focus is on the law of England, Germany and three mixed legal systems (Scotland, South Africa and Louisiana), though other legal systems are also mentioned. Major topics subjected to a promissory analysis include formation of contract, third party rights, contractual remedies and the renunciation of contractual rights. Part III analyses the future role which promise might play in contract law, especially within a harmonised European contract law.

Tommy Dorsey: Livin' in a Great Big Way, A Biography, by Peter J. Levinson

Swing has never gone out of style. It was the music the Greatest Generation danced to--and went to war to. And no musician evokes the Big Band era more strikingly than Tommy Dorsey, whose soaring trombone play and hit tunes influenced popular music for a generation. Tommy Dorsey (1905-1956) led a rich and complex life. Beginning with his childhood in the coal mining towns of Pennsylvania, we follow the young trombonist's journey to fame and fortune during the Jazz Age. Tommy, with his brother Jimmy, created one of the most popular bands of the era and played with such giants as Bing Crosby and Glenn Miller. They also launched the career of a skinny young singer named Frank Sinatra. But Tommy's volcanic personality eventually split the band and Tommy went off on his own. Drawing on exhaustive new research and scores of interviews with the musicians who knew him best, Levinson delves into Dorsey's famously eccentric lifestyle and his oversize appetite for drink, women, and perfection. The first biography on Dorsey in more than thirty years, Tommy Dorsey is a dazzling portrait of the Big Band's brightest star--his tumultuous life, his turbulent times, and the unforgettable music that made him a legend.

From Publishers Weekly
Levinson, a former entertainment publicist, booking agent and personal manager, delivers a definitive biography of trombonist-bandleader Dorsey (1905–1956). As children in Pennsylvania coal mining country, brothers Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey practiced daily, and music became their ticket out. By 1930, their versatility was evident; they did 15 radio shows a week in New York, while also performing for movie soundtracks, dance dates and theater pit jobs. Hit records followed after the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra signed with Decca in 1934, but blow-ups between the brothers led Tommy to quit the following year. The split led to two bands, both successful, and in 1939, Tommy wisely hired Frank Sinatra away from Harry James. Reunited as the Fabulous Dorseys, the brothers introduced Elvis Presley to the national TV audience on Stage Show, their 1954–1956 CBS series. Levinson's authoritative approach, layered with details, makes this book a bonanza for big band fans. He shares an arsenal of anecdotes, having interviewed over 160 people, including family, friends and ex-Dorsey musicians. The result is a striking portrait of Tommy Dorsey—"volatile, demanding, yet charming and engaging"—and a successful recreation of the swing era's glory days. 32 photos.

From Booklist
Marking the great bandleader's centenary, the first biography of Tommy Dorsey (1905-56) in more than 30 years offers a multifaceted portrait of a complex man. Levinson begins where Dorsey did, in the hardscrabble anthracite--mining towns of eastern Pennsylvania and in a family of self-taught musicians. Dorsey eventually became as famous (notorious) for the disciplined work ethic and toughness his perfectionist father instilled in him as for his trombone skills. Levinson traces Dorsey and his reed-player brother Jimmy from early gigs in Pennsylvania dance halls to Paul Whiteman's orchestra to forming their own ensemble, from which Tommy seceded to create one of the most popular big bands ever and launch two supernova stars, Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra. Hot-tempered, impetuous, prone to violence, stubborn to a fault, a problem drinker, Dorsey wasn't easy to be around, and after Sinatra left, Dorsey's popularity plummeted. But when reunited with Jimmy for a short-run TV show, it was Frankie all over again: Dorsey, not Ed Sullivan, introduced the nation to Elvis Presley. June Sawyers

The Amazing Dorsey Saga
By A. Jones
I thoroughly enjoyed this well researched and well written book, as I did the two previous efforts by this writer on Harry James and Nelson Riddle. It is a fascinating account of the life and times of the big touring bands in the swing era. I found it very hard to put down but sorry when I finished it. A very fine piece of work in my opinion.

TOOTIN' DORSEY'S HORN, GOOD AND BAD
By Alan W. Petrucelli
Few musicians evoke the Big Band era more than Tommy Dorsey. With his soaring trombone playing and hit tunes, he left an indelible mark on American culture, yet few know that off stage, Dorsey's personal life was as fascinating as the music he created on stage. A man driven by his passion for women and drink as much as for music, Dorsey was a perfectionist who lived on overload. Peter Levinson's bio, drawn on exhaustive new research and scores of interviews with those who knew Dorsey best, takes us center stage and behind the scenes, toppling the swing era's icon sweet and mellow image and replacing it with a more truthful, multi-faceted portrait of a man of extreme excess. All the high and low notes Dorsey achieved are here. Play on!

A PAGE TURNER FOR AMATEURS OF THE SWING ERA!
By Reinhold Schwarzwald
Peter Levinson's book is a fun, entertaining and well researched portrait of one of the swing era's great artists and bandleaders. Levinson takes the reader on a journey into the life and work of the multi-faceted personality of Dorsey, who worked relentlessly to lead his orchestra to become one of the biggest successes of its era. Dorsey who had a significant influence on the music scene of his time was also the mentor of what would become one of the most successful entertainers of all time - Frank Sinatra.

Guided by Levinson, the reader gets insights from behind the scenes about Dorsey and Band, largely hidden from the public eye. Spiked with anecdotes of colleagues and other contemporaries, written with wit and an underlying satirical humor by a publicist who has worked with some jazz giants, this book is a page turner for anyone interested in this era, be it amateurs or professionals.

The Consequences of Ideas: Understanding the Concepts that Shaped Our World, by R. C. Sproul

Sproul's survey of the ongoing impact of history's most influential philosophies urges readers to take prevailing cultural mind-sets seriously… because ideas do have consequences.

The greatest thinkers of all time are impacting us still. From public-policy decisions and current laws to world events, theology, the arts, education, and even conversations between friends, history's most influential philosophies have wrought massive consequences on nearly everything we see, think, and do.

Thus it is critical for Christians to understand the ideas that are shaping them. The greater their familiarity with the streams of thought that have saturated Western culture through the ages, the greater their ability to influence this culture for Christ.

With The Consequences of Ideas, now in paperback, R. C. Sproul expertly leads the way for thoughtful readers. Tracing the contours of Western philosophy from the ancients to the molders of modern and postmodern thought-including Plato, Aquinas, Descartes, Kant, and Freud-Sproul proves that ideas are not just passing fads; they endure for generations to come and demand our serious attention.

Excellcent overview of Western philosophy!
By Bruce H
This book covers roughly 2,500 years of Western philosophy from Plato to Jean-Paul Sartre. Sproul's sections on Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche and the section on the influence of Charles Darwin and Sigmund Freud (even though they cannot properly be called philosophers) were the most insightful sections in the book. The conclusion was excellent as well.
Sproul opens the book with an introduction to what philosophy is and why he is interested in it. I think his definition that philosophy is foundational thinking is simple and very accurate. His attention to epistemology (The branch of philosophy that studies the nature of knowledge, its presuppositions and foundations, and its extent and validity) throughout the book was a good to choice. Sproul's explanation of the various philosophers was accessible; the use of diagrams (e.g. his illustration of Kierkegaard and Hegel's synthesis) will help those who are totally unfamiliar with philosophy.
Many readers will probably say that the book is far too short (at 203 pages), but I think Sproul's objective was to provide a concise introduction. I think the book could be twice the length and still be concise (then he could have included Pragmatism and perhaps even an Eastern philosopher or two). I think that the book failed to do accomplish its title. What do I mean? I think except for a few places (e.g. Marx), he failed to show the consequences of these ideas. Examples of how these ideas have impacted society would make philosophy more relevant. At the same time, I recognize that perhaps Sproul wanted to reader to reflect on these ideas and then realize when these ideas have influenced the arts, politics etc but I think he failed to show how these ideas have worked themselves out (again, there are a few exceptions) in our world. Also, he rarely mentioned the Christian response to these philosophers; I think perhaps an annotated bibliography of Christian books responding to each philosophical movement (i.e. rationalism, empiricism, Marxism or existentialism) would have been helpful. One book I can recommend that evaluates some of these philosophers (e.g. Kant, Hume, Plato and others) is Norman Geisler's, "Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics."
I would recommend this book for Christians who want to learn about philosophy but don't know where to begin.

Well written, but lacks influences of last 50 years.
By M. Rittman
_Consequences_ covers great philosophers from Thales of Miletus, to the philosophers of modernism. The penultimate chapter before the conclusion covers Darwin and Freud. Sproul discussed how these 19th century thinkers have had great influence on the current secular worldview. As others have noted, the book ends rather abruptly after 200 pages.
Throughout this book R. C. Sproul does not hide his biases. He clearly states he is a Christian and a dedicated supporter of the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas. He agrees with Roman Catholic philosopher Etienne Gilson, and concludes, "our choice is not between Immanuel Kant and René Descartes or between G. W. F. Hegel and Søren Kierkegaard. We must choose instead between Kant and Thomas Aquinas. Gilson insists that all other positions are mere halfway houses on the road to either absolute religious agnosticism or the natural theology of Christian metaphysics."
R. C. Sproul is a very good writer. He is both easy to read, and communicates many ideas in a few words. I gave _Consequences_ four stars because it is a very good introduction to ancient, medieval, and modern philosophy. Some of the discussions of how philosophies interacted with each other were very nice. Sproul also has an excellent skill in explaining such concepts as epistemology (knowledge), ontology (being), and teleology (purpose).
This book includes the best short introduction to the medieval scholastics I have ever read. The inclusion of proofs for the existence of God was very nicely done. Kierkegaard is also very good, although Sproul does not seem to go as far as he might to meet him on his own terms. As a fideist Kierkegaard has a different philosophical emphasis than Sproul. To judge Kierkegaard in purely rational way seems unfair; he was more concerned about matters of faith and heart and saw philosophy as a means to expression, rather than a way to find absolute truth. I respectfully disagree with Sproul who feels that fideism is one of the "mere byproducts born of the decomposition of the Christian living God." R. C. Sproul certainly is not as friendly to his philosophy as Calvin College's C. Stephen Evans is in _Faith Beyond Reason_.
The book claims to help the reader understand "the concepts that shaped our world." I felt that the book fell short of its purpose because it seems to ignore the influences to our culture in the last fifty years. There was little, if any, mention of postmodernism and eastern philosophy. I found myself checking the copyright date to make sure it wasn't written in the nineteen-fifties. In recent years, the influence of postmodernism has had a profound affect on our culture, and I see the omission as a flaw. In the introduction, Sproul states, "Philosophy forces us to think foundationally." The current voices of postmodern philosophers reject the foundationalism, and much of the rationalism of the modern era. Some people today go as far as saying "What is true for you, is true for you. What is true for me is true for me." That being said, this book and another such as Stanley J. Grentz's _A Primer on Postmodernism_ make a great pair.

The fact that R. C. Sproul is a Reformed Christian, and seems to be quite partial to Thomas Aquinas, does not detract from the fact that he is also a very competent historian of philosophy. I appreciate his ministry to promote thinking among evangelical Christians. After reading _Consequences_, I would highly recommend the highly acclaimed nine-volume series _A History of Philosophy_ by Thomist philosopher Frederick C. Copleston.

A brief introduction to an introduction
By Stephen E. Gruber
As I have suggested in the title, this book appears to me to be a "brief introduction to an introduction." The book is not to be confused with Richard Weaver's classic, "Ideas Have Consequences", in which he (Weaver) provides the reader with a pellucid introduction and overview of Western philosophy and how the Age of Reason gave birth to the decline of true philosophy (the study of wisdom, i.e., sophia/logos), and the birth of rationalism (the exaltation of man's reason over revelation) and the granddaughter, postmodernism, which teaches subjective irrationalism ("What I believe is true, IS True"). Unfortunately, for my money, R.C. Sproul, who is a fine theologian and writer, indeed (I have most of his works) misses the mark in what he propounds to be a basic introduction for the non-philosopher. My reasons are twofold: First, the book barely introduces key concepts and then quickly moves on to the next topic or philosopher; and second, what is explained is not clear enough because of my first point. For example, Sproul points out that Plato was an idealist and that Aristotle was a realist, doing this in one single paragraph, and then moves on. His definition of idealism and realism is incomplete. As I have taught my philosophy students, the two schools are indeed simple enough to understand, but more detail is required. Plato's reality was absorbed in the mind; the reality of truth, justice and aesthetics is found in the reality of the mind, for behind all corporeal things, behind the physical appearances we see each day, exists in a metaphysical sphere the reality of such appearances. The black stallion we see running in the field is an inferior black stallion, a "shadow" of its true reality, for somewhere in the heavens exists the perfect black stallion, and sadly, we must content ourselves with its imperfect image. Plato said that reality is a dream, that what is before us is an illusion (similar to Eastern mysticism), that all physical objects, including humans, are sinful. Thus, when John says in his Gospel that the "Word (divine logos to the Greeks) became flesh," this notion would have been utterly contemptible to many Greeks in the first century. Plato, therefore, was an idealist is that he formulated truth in the mind, and from his most famous work, "The Republic", we see his idealism played out in what he envisioned as a perfect society, a society that "should be," not the realistic society of "what is" taught by his student Aristotle, in his book, "The Politics." Aristotle was a realist in that he believed that inductive and scientific investigation of the real world, as opposed to Plato's unreal cosmology, would lead one to both understand the Prime Mover (God) and how the world worked and could be harnessed. Thanks to Aristotle, who became the prevailing philosopher, the West would launch into detailed investigations that would lead to inventions and the notion of human rights, freedom and autonomy. In my view, Sproul gives scant notice to the fundamental differences between idealism and realism, and does not make applications or logical connections, or in his words, he does not demonstrate the consequences of those ideas. I find it remarkable that he gives no space to Cicero, one who constantly quotes or alludes to Plato in his works. Cicero was a loan voice who hearkened decadent Rome back to the wisdom of the Greeks, and laid a foundation for future understanding of ethics, morals, political responsibility and freedom. Sproul should have shown the clear influences between the philosophers. For example, how Plato deeply influenced St. Augustine who credited Plato with being his teacher; how Augustine influenced Luther and Calvin; how Plato influenced Locke and then Freud; how Aristotle influenced, well, everyone, especially St. Thomas, Calvin, then down to philosophers in our own time. In short, all philosophers since Plato and Aristotle have merely stood on the shoulders of those two giants, and one philosopher even penned that all philosophers since Plato are merely a footnote to Plato himself. Both Plato and Aristotle are quite literally the Fathers of Western Civilization, but that idea has little consequence in the book.

To be brief is fine, but to be vastly incomplete could mean that the reader is not getting a necessary foundation in order to understand other philosophers. For example, Sproul takes barely two pages to explain Hegel's theory of thesis/antithesis. He explains that for Hegel, one begins with a thesis from which one derives an antithesis, from which one formulates a synthesis; then the synthesis becomes a new thesis. For the layperson in philosophy, I would (I can only) imagine that this construct would be confusing. Sproul never posits a thesis and antithesis for clarification, but merely provides a graduating graph. The reader is left clueless. On this point, Francis Schaeffer in his book, "Escape from Reason", is a little more helpful.

Why Sproul left John Dewey as a footnote in the last chapter is a mystery to me, as it was John Dewey who nearly single handedly presided over the death of American public education, slowly from the 1920's and 30's to this death in 1965. The Pragmatism philosophy invented by John Dewey is clearly connected to the Existentialism of Hegel, Kierkegaard, Camus and Sartre, and has profoundly influenced American society, particularly the free fall of ethics and morals beginning in the 1960s to the present day. It was Dewey in his 1941 book, "Theory of the Moral Life", maintained that there are two enemies of his beloved "Progressive" Education movement in America, i.e., first, religion in general, and the church in particular with its outmoded creeds, and secondly, parents. He envisioned a society where, in order for students to progress intellectually, that social engineering (public education) will free young people from both religious negative influences and the negative influences of parents. For a brilliant discussion of John Dewey, George Counts and others Doctors of Intellectual Death, read Diane Ravitch's book, "Left Back: A Century of Failed Education Reform." Every parent should own Ravitch's book.

Unfortunately, because Sproul opted for brevity in his introduction to an introduction, the reader is given a fragmented portrait of the history of ideas, their consequences, and their logical outcomes.

I give the book three stars because R.C. Sproul is the author, and a fine one indeed, but I must subtract two stars because the several ideas within are incomplete, and not applied. Stephen Gruber, Ph.D. Prof. Philosophy and History.

Introducing the Four Components That Make Innovation Repeatable

Even the best-performing companies eventually stall. Sustaining momentum—and remaining a great growth company—takes a system.

Scott Anthony and David Duncan call this system a “Growth Factory.” They’ve seen it work in a small set of elite companies that have created environments where innovation is both repeatable and reliable, not relegated to an off-site or isolated division that has no real connection to the organization’s future.

In this HBR Single, Anthony and Duncan draw on their extensive experience working with these growth factory organizations—most notably Procter & Gamble and Citigroup. They highlight the four main components that make innovation repeatable and reliable, citing real examples of what P&G, Citi, and even their own firm, Innosight, have gone through to stay firmly on a path toward growth despite huge challenges. They offer practical advice on how you can put their system into action in your own company—whether it’s a large multinational or a small start-up.

HBR Singles provide brief yet potent business ideas for today’s thinking professional. They are available digitally at HBR.org and through the Kindle Store, the iBookstore, and other ebooksellers.

Good but superficial
By jesper engberg
Provides a good overview of the tools and approaches necessary to make innovation repeatable and reliable.
Note, however, that it is very concise. If you're new to Innovation and/or innovation management, the content will most likely seem superficial. If that is the case you are better off reading other books by Scott and company.

A concise strategy for making your business a continual innovator
By John Gibbs
To achieve growth goals by making innovation repeatable and reliable, companies need to go beyond isolated programs to develop a system of enablers working together in an integrated way, according to Scott Anthony and David Duncan in this book. Serious commitment from the company's top leadership and dedicated resources are required to build the growth factory's foundations.

Most companies do not have extensive resources devoted to the management of innovation. For most business leaders, innovation is something that happens by serendipity; inspiration is not something that can be controlled and predicted. However, as the authors argue quite persuasively, innovation can be planned, fostered, managed and controlled. Vastly greater benefits can be gained if there are systems in place to encourage, measure and regulate the innovation process.

The authors advocate a "growth factory" which includes as key components: a growth blueprint detailing growth types, goals and guidelines; production systems for transforming ideas into businesses; governance and controls; and leadership, talent and culture. Each of these are specified in the book to a level of detail that the average business leader might find intimidating; but at the end of the book there are some handy hints on how to get things started from a low base.

Many businesses are being hit by digital disruption and changes brought on by new technology and other forces. There are plenty of books proclaiming that innovation is the only way forward, but most of them simply leave the typical business owner feeling worried and guilty. This book stands out from the crowd by presenting in a very concise manner a detailed and achievable strategy for creating a business that continually reinvents itself.

Innovation for business recovery and growth
By Minette B. Navarrete
In "Building a Growth Factory," authors Scott Anthony and David Duncan dissect the underlying drivers for the successful innovation-based turnaround of corporate giants Procter & Gamble and Citibank. The book presents the context of both companies' burning platforms, and builds up the various components of their well-documented evolution to corporate poster children for innovation. Specific critical incidents are cited, along with rich resource for further reading.

Aside from the material being thoroughly researched, the format -- with critical questions and warning flags -- makes the book a practical resource, demanding self-reflection on the part of attentive readers. Innovation evangelists and new business leaders are most likely to pick up this book, but I would also recommend it to CEO's everywhere: more than anything, this book reminds us that innovation-driven growth is a team sport, and one that will not prosper without selective, disciplined risk-taking, and top-level strategic endorsement.
