Dr Wei Shyy is the Provost of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and formerly Clarence L. 'Kelly' Johnson Collegiate Professor and Department Chair of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan. Shyy is the author or a co-author of four books and numerous journal and conference articles dealing with a broad range of topics related to aerial and space flight vehicles. He is General Editor of the Cambridge Aerospace Book Series (Cambridge University Press) and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the nine-volume Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engineering (2010). He has received the 2003 AIAA Pendray Aerospace Literature Award and the ASME 2005 Heat Transfer Memorial Award. He has led multi-university centers under the sponsorship of NASA, the US Air Force Research Laboratory and industry. His professional views have been quoted in various news media, including the New York Times and USA Today.

Not enough stars

At the beginning i thought this book was difficult to follow, and even a bit boring. My first impression is that the author was abusing the 'stream of consciousness' technique, just lost in his thoughts. But i continued reading and soon realized that there was a reason to the apparent 'madness'. This book is a concert of thoughts, all centered in a common point. The tangents or stories in the periphery were designed so skillfully that they complement the story without seeming superfluous: Ruibérriz, Celia/Victoria, el Único, all well defined and colorful characters, and the literary quotes mixed in with the text, the movie scenes, all contributing to enhance a plot already captivating. The main character struggles between decisions already taken or assumed, and the dialogs he has with himself are among the best i have read in Spanish literature in a long time.
The ending is unforeseen. When i thought i knew how things were developing, at the last moment i was surprised. Life can be so ironic, and laugh so much at our expense (or at Deán's expense, in this case).
The additional notes (another surprise i did not discover till the end) are very interesting, and if i had any doubts about the exceptional writer that Javier Marías is, i lost them completely after reading them. This novel cannot be missed.

Marías the master

Javier Marías should - and probably will - win the Nobel someday, and rightfully so. If you are unfamiliar with Spanish literature, as one reviewer here seems to be, or at least unfamiliar with Marías's style, then the prose will take some getting used to, in the same way as a reader must adjust to Jose Saramago or the long sentences of Proust. While "A heart so white" is slightly better, this was still a wonderful read.

Masterful first sentences and more...

It is common knowledge among Marías' readers that the beginnings of his novels are among the best in today's Spanish language literature. Indeed, I can only recall a few cases in which a first sentence -nothing more than that- instantly compelled me to read the rest of a novel. I guess what I am trying to suggest is that Marías is one of the few novelists in the Spanish language today whose style you would be able to recognize by just reading a first sentence. But the stylistic component is not the only compelling thing-it is also the incredible opening scenes. Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me undoubtedly has (perhaps with the beginning of A Heart So White) the best beginning of Marías oeuvre and (I would dare say) in all contemporary Spanish literature. It is not only the first sentence, "No one ever expects that they might some day find themselves with a dead woman in their arms..." but also the first opening chapter, in which Victor, the narrator, "finds himself" with an almost unknown, dead woman in his arms. The woman, Marta, has invited him over dinner while her husband is away on a business trip. What begins as an innocent, fun evening becomes a descent to a sort of hell (maybe Dante's), and Marías grabs you from the arm and leads you from that magnificent first sentence and chapter to the very last pages with mastery and unprecedented talent. Read it, you will not regret it.

A very exciting series by Brooks - his best in a while

This book picks up right after the first book "Wards of Faerie" and it just gets worse for the group of heroes. The Ard Rhys and party are still in the Forbidding and that is bad, very bad, and Aphenglow Elessedil has taken her sister to the Bloodfire to renew the Ellcrys, but the idiot humans are pursuing them thinking there is magic to be found. And the elves are starting to get ready for the failing of the Forbidding. And another quest to bring back a former druid is underway (which I won't spoil). There are a lot of storylines going on, and some get skipped for a while, but its all good, because its like chaos is going on in The Four Lands, and that's how the story flows.

Brooks is not being nice here, it's one of his darkest series (and this book specifically) that he has ever written, and I like it. It remind me of his earlier work like The Elfstones of Shannara" which is his best work, in my opinion, and so far these first two books are as good as anything he has written. You know somehow this is going to end up fine in the end, but right now after reading this second book in the series I don't know how, as he's just decimated everyone that was introduced in the first book in this series. It's very exciting, and it's been making me turn the pages as fast as I can read wanting more. Great stuff; the best Brooks in a long while, and highly recommended!

Great Shannara Stories Continue

Gotta say this three book series, so far, has reminded me so much of the original three books (Sword, Elfstones and Wishsong) and the Heritage series. Complex, suspenseful, and extremely entertaining. I am on the edge of my seat reading these like I was when I was a teenager reading the orginal series, and again in my twenties reading the Hertiage series.

I've always been impressed with Mr Brook's ability to captivate me as he weaves his stories, from the word and void series, to the Landover series (which I read while deployed in Iraq). I might add that I have never laughed outloud while reading a book till the Magic Kingdom for sale...Sold book.

Shannara continues, in my opinion, to the best best fantasy series that exists. Nothing comes close to it now, and I believe that everything that comes afterwards will be compared to it.

Good job Mr Brooks, keep up the great work!

Slow start but a strong finish by classic fantasy author

The mission to recover the long-lost elf-stones has ended with destruction of the druid order, the loss of most of the quest's members, and the capture of the Ard Rhys and Redden Ohmsford. Worse, the barrier that has separated the four lands from the forbidding is weakening and the monsters are at the verge of spilling over, destroying the lands of elves and humans.

The breakdown in the barrier is caused by the slow death of the great tree, Ellcrys, who has selected Arling, an elf-princess, to be her unwilling heir. Now, Arling's sister, Aphenglow, must abandon her quest for the stones and help Arling discover how to renew the tree... and somehow prevent the sacrifice that is necessary if the barriers are to be renewed.

Author Terry Brooks can tell a compelling story (which is why he now has dozens of Shannara stories as well as his other series and books). And BLOODFIRE has its good moments, especially the battle between Aphenglow and the elf-hunter Cymrian (on one side) and the assassin Stoon with his trio of mutant-killers. I felt that the story ended on a high point, with a real cliff-hanger (sorry guys, it's a series, you don't get a resolution), with the strongest elements of the novel bringing up the end, and with clear objectives for the protagonists as they wrestle with the sequel. Too much of BLOODFIRE, though, was all about getting there. Arling resolves not to come to terms with her selection by the Ellcrys, Redden sits in prison and worries, Redden's brother, Railing, tries to decide what to do not that his brother is captured (and possibly dead). Shapeshifter (and daughter of a druid) Oriantha wanders around looking to rescue Redden (although her motivation for doing so isn't especially clear), while not actually doing much.

There seems to be a tendency in fantasy series to flip from story aspect to story aspect, to juggle a collection of independent story lines, to make sure new story lines emerge as older ones wrap up, and to never actually get anywhere. Combined with middle book-itus, this can make for some painful reading. Fortunately, BLOODFIRE QUEST avoids the worst of these dangers. We have a primary story line (the quest for the Ellcrys), a primary character (Aphenglow), and a ticking clock (the breakdown in the barrier). Still, it seemed to me that we spent way too much time waiting, discussing options (or refusing to accept the reality that there were no options). Brooks's strong story-telling at the end helped sell the next book, but it also made me wonder why it hadn't been on display the whole way through.

If you're a fan of Shannara, and especially if you've been reading THE DARK LEGACY mini-series, you'll want to grab BLOODFIRE. It definitely isn't one of those books where nothing happens to the point where you can skip the whole thing. I wouldn't recommend starting here, though.

About the Author
Elisabetta de Lutio graduated in medicine and specialized in diagnostic imaging at the University of Naples. In her over twenty years of experience, first at A. Cardarelli Hospital (Naples) and now at the G. Pascale Tumor Foundation (Naples), she has been involved in various sectors of diagnostic imaging, including conventional radiology, interventional US, color Doppler, CEUS and MDCT, and become expert in double contrast techniques applied to the musculoskeletal system and the gastrointestinal tract. Her strong interdisciplinary approach has seen her involved in numerous interdepartmental working groups and study protocols, collaborating with colleagues from hematology, surgery, medicine and intensive care in the study of a broad range of oncologic disease, including colorectal cancer, HCC, GIST and breast cancer, as well as studying novel techniques of contrast enhancement. She has also taught in specialization courses in oncology and diagnostic imaging techniques of the gastrointestinal tract.

While it is titled "An introduction to", I would posit that it is more suitable to a reader with slightly more experience with control theory, as they can truly appreciate all the asides that the author includes in his text.

Word of warning: make sure you are up to speed with your stochastic processes - the book does not spend a lot of time on going through details, and it is hard, if not impossible, to truly understand the topics in the later chapters without a full grasp of a measure-theoretic knowledge of stochastic processes.

I've had the book the first time in London in 1976. I've lent it and never came back. Today, I was looking for a book on stochastic processes and Kalman Filtering, when I came across with a suggestion to buy from amazon and I was happy to acquire once again after many years a book which I consider a good and orderly book on stochasctic control after so many years and so many advances in stochasctic control theory and applications.

Choosing to write Plath's life without the consent and probable constraints of the estate, Alexander eschews quoting from Plath's work; his is not a literary study. It seems no longer possible to read Plath's poems and fictions without her life and suicide as guide. Ignore her death, and the fiction and most of the poems increasingly seem self-indulgent and less than first-rate, unable to support a major reputation half as well as her self-destructive behavior does. Because her estate--which is ruled over by Ted Hughes and his sister Olwyn, the villains in these biographies--denies authors permission to quote from Plath's work unless manuscripts are submitted for approval and changes, if requested, are made, readers are left with inadequate paraphrase, innuendo, gossip, and speculation, which then lead to controversy and mystery--which in their turn lead to sales and literary immortality. Alexander, editor of Ariel Ascending: Writings About Sylvia Plath, deserves some attention. Still, each biography finally fails, either because of padding with irrrelevant minutiae (Alexander's); or a melodramatic and Kitty Kelleyish tone (Hayman's); or the substitution of simplistic paraphrase for analyses, sensationalism for objectivity, mystery for understanding (both). Second biography of Sylvia Plath this season, this one by the editor of Ariel Ascending (1984), a collection of essays on Plath's life and work. Alexander's is a full-bodied biography, long on facts, short on criticism, but the best so far as a conventional life of the poet. Despite his detail, however, Alexander is much less involved with interpretation than Ronald Hayman is in The Death and Life of Sylvia Plath (p. 909), a psychocritical investigation focusing on the nature of suicide as shown in the poet's work. Hayman is more exciting, though both writers strain at supposition. Alexander carries Hayman's revisionist view of Plath's husband, poet Ted Hughes, to an even more extreme darkness, with Hughes now showing up as a craggy, violent man obsessed with horoscopes and the occult and in Plath's last year even urging her to suicide, perhaps with posthypnotic suggestion. Implied is that Plath fulfilled an agenda reinforced in her by Hughes, though of course she had an earlier history of suicide attempts. Whatever the truth of this (Hughes has never granted an interview about Plath), it's now more than a quarter century later and Hughes still finds himself pursued by his dead but restless wife in a variety of legal battles about her estate. Alexander (as Hayman did) resorts to paraphrase of Plath's work (Hughes refuses all rights to quote unless he can vet any biography), which tends to de-energize his page, but he has cracked the reserve of many Plath intimates who've not spoken before, especially about Hughes in a strange delirium attempting to strangle Plath and later deserting her outright on a vacation in Ireland when he thought he saw a face move in a painting. Alexander also uncovers a likely abortion that helped save her Fulbright. Lives of Plath are now so familiar that one reads them to see which writer can play Hamlet best. At this point, Hayman--with reservations--cuts the brightest figure, with Plath chewing more scenery than even Alexander can muster. Brilliant and compassionate is "Rough Magic"

Paul Alexander's "Rough Magic"is an outstandingly sensitive account of Sylvia Plath's life. The enormous amount of research by Alexander is highly impressive and clearly comes through in his amazing book. Since the author spent over five years interviewing over two hundred people who knew Plath and or Hughes as well as reading most if not all of the available archival documents concrned with his subject, it's small wonder that "Rough Magic" is such a great biography.

The description of her horrible ordeal in the chapter "Edge" should evoke sympathy and admiration for this highly talented woman who tried to cope against overwhelming odds of personal mental and physical sickness, harsh environment and separation from the man she loved.

The strength of this is the great number of personal stories from Aurelia's numerous talks with Alexander, and so many other close friends of the author which range over much of Syliva's lifetime.

I would strongly urge anyone who has even a modicum of interest in Sylvia Plath to beg, borrow, steal or even buy this book. It is one of the best biographies I have had the enormous pleasure and at times sadness in reading.

Finally!

At long last, a biography of Sylvia Plath written by someone who refused to bow to the editorial demands of Ted & Olwyn Hughes, who unfortunately controlled the late poet's estate at the time. Choosing freedom of speech over permission to quote Plath's work, Paul Alexander has produced an extraordinary biography that reveals the true Sylvia Plath as a girl, woman, wife, mother, and most important, author. With interviews from friends and family who had never before spoken about Plath for publication, this is a book that any scholar of Plath's life and work should not miss.

Wonderful, compassionate account of the life of a beloved, tortured artist

"Rough Magic" by Paul Alexander is a pure and objective account of the life of Sylvia Plath. It begins with her family history; a brief overview of her grandparents and parents, and follows with her childhood, including the tragic, influential death of her father when she was a young girl. Her years as a growing adolescent and emerging writer are retold with clarity and insight into the events which went on. Topics of focus include her intense, dramatic need for academic success and her longing to always remain a socially accepted person, two things which were embedded into Sylvia as a young child. The biography goes into great detail about the romantic relationships she experienced, with everything from a stolen kiss from a not-so-secret admirer during her teen-years, to the sad and turbulent end to her marriage to Ted Hughes.

Grade 7-9–When a griffin threatens his home, Phaeton hopes to battle the monster, but a rival beats him to the kill. Epaphus then challenges Phaeton's claim to be Phoebus Apollo's son. Phaeton questions his mother, who bids him to seek his divine father. Charmed by this bold, handsome lad, Apollo rashly promises him anything he wants. The boy asks to drive the god's fiery chariot, a journey that ends in tragedy. This retelling is structured in three acts: the home setting, where Phaeton acknowledges his stepfather's wisdom but finds the man too tame; the journey, where the boy has a chance to take his own measure and learn about his weaknesses; and the encounter with Apollo. Cadnum's psychological penetration is most sure in the final section, revealing exactly how both characters get locked into their positions against their better judgment. The writing is pitched to accomplished readers, though the paragraphs contain lots of dialogue. The slightly formal style recalls archaic sources: "Phaeton lifted a clear-voiced greeting." Greek terms add to the ambience, but definitions are clumsily inserted rather than indirectly indicated ("dryad–a wood nymph"). Still, a lot of information on the ancient world is conveyed. Cadnum, whose legendary subjects have ranged from Robin Hood to Norse gods, turns his focus to Greek myths in this fictional telling of the story of Phaeton, the teenage son of a mortal mother and sun god Apollo. After his divine parentage is challenged, Phaeton seeks out his father for reassurance. He's overwhelmed by his father's show of paternal love, which includes an offer to fulfill any wish. Phaeton responds by asking to drive Apollo's chariot on its daily trip across the sky. Apollo agrees, but Phaeton is unable to control the blinding power of the vehicle and nearly scorches the earth before Zeus intervenes. Although the narrative is somewhat disjointed, and readers without mythological background may have trouble following along, the story's themes--parental identity, the meaning of glory, how best to show affection--will resonate with contemporary readers. Pretty great

I keep looking for more books like Rosemary Sutcliff's "Black Ships Before Troy" or "The Wanderings of Odysseus" -- in other words, really good fiction based on old myths and legends and epics.

This book does a good job with Phaeton's story, creating a memorable story with good characters. Unsurprisingly, my favorite characters are Mercury and Apollo -- Michael Cadnum does a great job with their godlike qualities.

I'm a mom of boys, and the story lingers a bit too long on the sexual relationship between Clymene and Apollo for me to be comfortable having a 1st or 2nd grader reading it -- fine for older kids, though.
